There was an option to hop into one of the golf carts if you couldn't walk all the way to baggage claim, but we made our way on our own two feet. Lots of walking escalators to get us to our bags, but at least there was an express option so we didn't have to wait in a long line at immigration. We just had to scan our passport and walk through an automated gate. Baggage claim was a bit confusing on our end since we weren't informed on which carousel had our luggage, so we had to look at the board and slowly wait to see our flight number appeared on the board. The tour company we were with had drivers for us, so that was a plus in not having to figure that part out to leave the airport to our hotel, which was an hour away.

We used this airport quite a bit when we were stationed in the UK. Not that it was closer. It was just more convenient back then since there was a bus that would transport us back to the base. Our most recent experience was just as nice. We were dropped off at the terminal via a NCL chartered transfer from the Southampton cruise terminal. Checking in through British Airways was a breeze. We had no issues going through security. In fact, the security officers were actually quite pleasant. There was a big duty free store that we had to walk through before getting to the south terminal. The BA lounges were all easy to find after that. We had a delay before boarding, but BA kept us informed the entire time. I'm writing this review now because it may be the last time we fly out of Gatwick again. British Airways will be flying a new route from Tampa to London Heathrow later this year. Hopefully it will be just as convenient after the change.

My experience with this airline is only as an arrival, as I travelled through other parts of Europe by train and by air. The arrival was quite smooth as far as international travel is concerned. We were able to get through customs quickly. However sadly no stamp on the passport for the international travel. Restrooms had abundant stalls but there were really busy. The handwashing stations were individually in each stall. I had a decent experience in the women's stalls where I was comfortable enough to brush my teeth and wash my face. However my boyfriend mentioned that the men's side was really gross, not clean enough to clean up and reset after the long flight. My favorite thing about this airport is that it is connected to a train system that will take you into central London or whichever surrounding area you need to get to. Navigating was pretty simple. A quick and convenient arrival. I would consider flying back into this airport in the future.

The long walk to the bus transfer between terminals is really what brings the rating down. It's always very crowded due to the fact that it's the primary terminal for British Airways. I corrected a mistake in my previous review of Terminal 3. The Fortnum & Mason shop is actually in Terminal 5. It's so easy to confuse the two after a long flight. Anyway, this particular location even has a bar in front of it where you can sip on champagne and nibble on canapés (if that's your thing). I just love to browse through the tea & biscuit section of the shop to see what's new. Sure, there are other great shops as well as food options on this side of the airport. I just love F&M tea! The British Airways Gallerie Club and First Lounges are above it. There's also an exclusive lounge called The Concorde Room that I'd love to try one day. So, I've read that British Airways will be starting a new direct route from Tampa to Heathrow (replacing Gatwick) towards the end of this year. I hope that this means it will arrive at BA's Terminal 5 hub. If so, then I'll be super grateful for the convenience of a smooth connection. If not, then I'll just be happy to have more connection possibilities to other countries. Either way, I'm thinking this is great for OneWorld travelers booking through American Airlines out of TPA. I think this airport is wonderful and the staff who work very hard are marvellous but we pass through and I don't know if they Rio folks off like Belfast's two airports. On arrival we were met by police despite travelling internally within the UK - Belfast being the departure place, so go figure. If I had to guess it's the risk of undesirables crossing the Irish border North going into UK by the back door is why. They were polite and fast, processing everyone promptly. The luggage was out fast and it's a two minute walk to get a taxi and £26 to go from the airport to the main seaport to pick up a cruise. We booked the same taxi service back and it surged a great. All done automatically as they link the journeys so when you call to return you just hit 1 and a taxi is dispatched. Similarly return dropping luggage is relatively easy security a courteous breeze and there's a Starbucks. I'm sure there's also a lounge but we couldn't be bothered as we hadn't long to wait for our flight.

It is mostly used for pilot training, and business flights by rich passengers who can afford to own or charter planes. Often you can see planespotters on the lay-by's, waiting for a glimpse of what they apparently consider to be a special jet. Although the facility is secure and the public cannot ordinarily get inside, at the edges you can get quite close to planes about to land and it can be fun to watch. No regularly scheduled commercial airline service here, though.

This is by far the most convenient option from London proper to Heathrow Airport, but you'll pay for that convenience. Where you could reach the airport via a local train for much less, shell out the 20 - 25 pounds per person and you can ride on a direct train with zero stops. The train runs nonstop from Paddington Station, which is easily accessible by Tube. It leaves roughly every 15 to 30 minutes, but there are frequently closures and delays so make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey. In the 4 times I've used this service, twice it's been cancelled and I had to take the regular local train, so be aware. The train stops at Heathrow but the walk from the station to the terminal is quite far (allow at least 20 minutes, and even longer if you are slow or have a ton of bags). Also make SURE that you keep your ticket out because you have to scan in AND out once you reach LHR station. The train itself is nothing fancy, but they have free wi-fi and luggage racks for the short journey. The seats are comfy enough. They often run specials, so make sure you check our their website. Sometimes there are deals if you buy group tickets and it's cheaper if you purchase your tickets far in advance. This is the easiest option to get from the city to LHR by a mile.
