The house is about 40 years old, we have been in it for 25 years, and had it had never received much attention. It was always too dark and closed off. There was a funky West County hallway that was also two bathrooms. We loved raising our children here, but now we were ready to open it up to the redwood trees and sunshine outside. We had a contractor who was really good with the structure, but we had no idea how to put the rooms together. Within moments of meeting Natasha we felt 100 percent comfortable. She never once sold herself to us, or tried to move us in a direction we were uncomfortable with. Instead, she urged us to shop where we were comfortable, find deals on Craigslist, and repurpose existing furniture. She delighted in our finds, encouraged us at every turn, and turned every one of our perplexed meanderings into an encouraging way forward. From the first painted color brushed onto the first new wall, everything Natasha picked was stunning. Since my daughters moved out of our family home, my big project was to have all of the walls inside the house painted an off-white color, which I then filled with my art collection. The rooms that became the most neglected over the years were the master bedroom and the master bathroom. They badly needed a facelift and redesign that reflected who I was today, not who I was when I moved into the house nearly twenty-five years ago. I chose to ask Rosalyn if she would look at my bedroom and bathroom after I saw her flyer and the beautiful designs she had created. Also, I had been inside her home, which she built and has designed so lovely and authentically to who she is, with many artistic accents. Rosalyn came over to my home and, in a very easy hour, she looked over the rooms and asked me questions which focused on how I would like to feel, and what I would like to see in these rooms. She then took measurements and went away to work on the design. In a short time she emailed over a detailed design board, with a suggested color palette, photos of furniture, rug, and window treatments and other styling suggestions, which were incredibly beautiful, along with 3D rendered visuals of how the rooms could look with her suggested layout. It encompassed all the things that I had mentioned I would like, such as the shabby chic style blended with elements of romanticism. I also really appreciated the way she incorporated Feng Shui in the designs for a more harmonious layout of the bedroom and bathroom. I am so excited to start working on buying the materials and new furnishings to complete the design work, which I am so satisfied and happy with. Rosalyn even found the most ideal Arts & Crafts wallpaper for my bedroom, inspired by the English designer William Morris, which connects me to my British roots. Another detail I was so pleased with. And, there were many others. This is my first-time working with an interior designer. Oh where to begin! When I give someone a budget I expect they will honor it. Well, not in this…read morecase. After we spent thousands of dollars on design fees, the quote for the furniture and rugs exceeded our budget by 33%. When questioned, Jim replied... "Oh, the budget for decorating never includes design fees, tax, or delivery". Wow, that would have been nice to know upfront. In all my business dealings a budget is a budget. Our issues started early and continued almost 18 months Jim came up with 5 designs for our great room. Of course, we paid for this in design time. We spent hours going thru magazines to show Jim what our taste in decorating was. We wanted "comfortable and classy", what he came back with looked nothing like what we had asked for. Clearly, he didn't listen but was happy to charge us for more time spent on design. The furniture he quoted was overpriced even with the "designer discount" as I found it less expensive online. When we informed Jim that we would order some furniture ourselves he told us he strongly advised against it stating the problems that can arise that often need attorneys to get involved. Well, the opposite happened, our online orders were handled very well with strong communication and delivery included in our pricing. In addition, when the first set of chairs, ordered thru Ireko, arrived they were damaged, then again 5 months later when the "repaired" chairs were received, once again they were damaged in different places. So much for careful inspection before we came to pick them up...oh, I forgot, the freight charged is to a storage facility, not to your home. That is an extra delivery charge. I have been in business for 48 years and have never felt such abuse and condescension.

We recently remodeled our kitchen and used Humanity Home & Cabinetry for the kitchen design and…read morecabinetry. In late 2019, the company expanded into a huge new showroom in Santa Rosa. When we started working with them in the spring of 2019, they were in a tiny office with very limited abilities to showcase products. As a result, I had to do a lot of searching on the Internet to vet the cabinetry they were pitching. Not sure whether you can get into the new showroom at the present time due to COVID, but if so, you can easily see the lines they offer right at the showroom. Our designer Jessica Ivie was our primary contact point throughout our kitchen design and remodel. She has an excellent sense of color and is skilled at paint matching and finding colors that complement your existing decor. If you are looking for someone to tell you what to do, she is the designer for you. Jessica is extremely organized and skilled at follow-up, and both are characteristics that are absolutely indispensable in any remodel project. In fact, she provided more oversight for our project than our contractor did. I was a little worried that since Jessica was not a cook that our kitchen design might be lacking, but in fact we have been very happy with the new layout she created for our kitchen. During the COVID shelter-in-place, we've had plenty of time to vet the new layout. We are enjoying the ease of access to previously inaccessible items, the beautiful backsplash, better lighting with under cabinet as well as overhead lights, warm colors, and clean design. The kitchen has gotten a workout and has delivered beyond our expectations. The only really negative aspect of working with HH&C occurred late in the project. Jessica helped us select a gorgeous glass backsplash that was from a brand new backsplash vendor. Much later in the project Jessica also suggested we get matching glass switch plates. Unfortunately, because she had never used a glass switch plate in a previous project, she did not realize that the flat backs of glass switch plates require a different approach to cutting out the openings for the plates in the backsplash or a different installation of the electrical boxes. As a result the glass plates could not be installed flush with the backsplash, which the electrician said would make them likely to break. The resolutions would have been costly that late in the project. Instead we opted to use different switch plates and asked for a refund. We did receive a refund for the plates, but Jessica's boss Kelly Silverstein made it clear she was not happy about giving us a refund. She suggested we wanted a refund because we didn't like the plates instead of acknowledging that HH&C had recommended a product that would not work given what the contractor's expectations for switch plates had been up to that point. We were shocked at her reaction about the refund since the refund amounted to less than 1% of our total purchases from HH&C for cabinets, backsplash, sink, etc. I have no doubt that our contractor invested considerably more in time and labor to rectify the whole switch plate issue than HH&C did in providing us with a small refund. By contrast, our contractor did not charge us any additional fees. It was a shame that we walked away from HH&C with such a bad taste in our mouth right at the end of the project. I would highly recommend Jessica as a designer, but because of our perception of Kelly's lack of customer service, I lowered the number of stars for HH&C from 5 to 4.
