Now that a new owner has taken over Pop's it has gone downhill. Sure, he spent a ton of money renovating the store and installing security cameras every three feet,which I understand but it is a far cry from the original Pop's.No longer do they send 30% off coupons, their selection of reasonably priced wines has dwindled and he has raised prices substantially on those remaining.You could always find bargain bottles at Pop's.... no more.And to add insult to injury he has about 8 registers and you're lucky if there is one person to take your freaking money !!! read more

I've never been to Pop's [yet...], but they had a great price on some excellent bottles of wine that I was looking for, so I bought a few bottles of it online. Shipping was free (I spent $190) and I received incredible customer service. Carol was in touch before shipping the bottles, saying that the weather was too cold to send them safely, and would it be okay to delay a few days to protect the wine in transit? [Would it!!] This store obviously employs a wine lover who cares about her customers. She even let me know about a current 30% off sale of most bottles in the store and encouraged me to come take advantage. I'll definitely visit the next time I'm nearby! read more

Pop's original owner has sold the business to people who reportedly own 5-6 other wine & liquor stores. The new people are putting a fortune into renovating the place. However, the renovations have come with new owners who do not care about the long time Pop's customers, highly jacked up prices, smaller selections of various wine varietals and and a bit of a pricing confusion at their semi annual 30% off sale. As a loyal, 10 year customer who spends a lot of money there, I tried to introduce myself to the new owners (twice) and they barely said hi. They simply don't care. They now have four types of shelf tags. Be careful as the new single price regular retail tag is a bit above a fair selling price. Those are the tags with one price that look different. Note that I'm not referring to the one price consignment tags or red-tags. I'm guessing they will phase out the old Pop's price tags. They are selling hard to find items at prices way over the suggested retail price. WAY OVER! Check their website for the price of Pappy! The original owners always sold this stuff at reasonable levels. These new people are simply price gouging! In addition, they have hiked shipping fee minimums. It used to be free shipping to my home in NYC with a $100 purchase. It is now a $300 purchase. Victor and Ted have departed. Thankfully, Willie is still there and they brought back Dorothy. I think it's time to move on from this legendary establishment and develop a relationship with a wine store and owners that actually cares about their customers. This is so very sad. read more

I've been a customer here for a very long time. The reason everyone went to pops was because they are loyal and never price gauge. I've been on a waiting list for 6 years for a particular bottle that costs under $200. I went in and saw that bottle as well as a few others that were marked up to 10 times the reatail price. After that, I couldn't even buy a $12 bottle of wine to see if I'm getting ripped off. I decided to buy a cheap bottle of wine and while on line, I heard many people talking about how they won't last and they've lost all trust in pops. I walked into pops close to 530. I looked around for a few minutes and proceeded to make my purchase. I went to the register and Sophia Rodriguez checked me out. I had four bottles and she put two in one brown bag and the other two in another. I walked near the door and just as I open the door, my shirt got caught on the handle and I struggled to hold my things. One of the bottle started to come out of the brown bag because I didn't realize the bag was broken. I tried to hold it with my other arm but it ended up falling out and broke right in front of the store. While the door was still opened, Sophia started to shout in a very nasty way that they are not liable for anything that happens out of the store. I told her I was barely out the door and I even scratched my arm in the process. Not one person even asked if I was OK nor did they come to even help me as they saw the struggle. I explained the bag was ripped and Sophia told me that she didn't force me to use the bag and I should have held it properly. She continued to tell me that they are not responsible. I asked to speak to the manager because there was glass all over and I didn't want anyone getting hurt. Gary came over and as I was talking to him, Sophia stepped away from her register and interrupted my conversation. I asked her to get away from me as I was speaking to someone else. She continued to interrupt me and started instigating an argument. I asked her then to get out of my face as I felt threatened. She continued to be nasty. At that point a young man named Jonathan stepped in front of her and told her to step away. Both Jonathan and Gary were nice enough to help me. They had called the owner and replaced the broken bottle. As for Sophia, I really hope they evaluate her behavior as an employee. She made the whole situation worse. Something that could have easily been resolved. You do not speak to customers like that. Horrible customer service and truly horrible attitude I will not return to this establishment ever again because of her! read more

This is not your run-of-the-mill liquor store! This is the place you need to visit for hard to find bottles of wine, cases of wines for events, and excellent customer service! Pop's has an amazing selection of wines from around the world - Australia, Spain, Germany, Italy, France and, of course, USA. There's even some Plum wines and Saki you might never find elsewhere! There's all your typical top-shelf liquors available, gift sets, and mini-bottles. The staff is friendly and willing to help you find what you're looking for. They even help you carry your purchase out to your car. That is, if you're buying a few bottles or a few cases! I highly recommend buying by the case - it's discounted and saves you a few trips over time. I never knew of Pop's until a coworker told me that he drives ~40 miles fortnightly to restock his wine collection. With that much conviction from a dedicated wine snob, I figured I had to check them out. The wine selection at Pop's definitely shines, but I'd have to give them the 5 stars for their customer service. I've been looking for a few bottles of a very small-batch bourbon since finishing my stocks, and absolutely nobody seems to carry it, with some liquor stores going so far as to tell me that the distillery wasn't even producing it anymore. A quick call to Pop's made them all out to be liars, and I was promised a special order would be put in for me. It wasn't a quick process, but the crew at Pop's kept me apprised of the situation via letters(!), and a phone call when one bottle finally came in. Even though they didn't get as much inventory as I was looking for, they already put my name on a follow-up order, and I expect another phone call when they get their next bottle in. This pains me. If I could give no stars for the "new" Pops I would. I ,as L.E, was a long time Pops customer (over 10 years). I literally learned about wine and explored the world of it through Pops and the wonderful staff. I was nirvana for wine lovers on the south shore of LI. What made the old Pops magical was the vibe. A wine snob could be ordering two cases of fine wine next to a person buying a handle bottle of rum and it was all good. The "new" Pops is simply awful. I visited yesterday and it will be my last. I asked the new owner if they still discounted cases @25% and they answered no 10% because we lowered all the prices on single bottles. This is simply a lie, remember o have been shopping here for 10 years and I know the prices of the wines I preferred. I almost walked out but I had to validate my assumption. Wines have gone up and the case discount has gone down. I paid about 20% more for my case than before so the "new" Pops math certainly doesn't work for the consumer. As for the slick cabinets and lighting; good luck with it. You can already see they are phasing our the great French and Italians reds and replacing them with main stream fruit bowl cabs. So so sad. My heart bleeds for the old Pops and the lost wine geeks like me. It was a local institution that had national chops. The place that now exists in its stead is a cheap knock off in slick skin trying to profit off the name of a great establishment. It won't work. People like me will figure it out soon enough and all the fancy lighting tricks in the world won't bring them back. read more

Boy does this place know their wine! The staff's knowledge only makes this place worth going to but it also doesn't hurt that the wine selection is extremely well-rounded and well priced. I ordered dozens of wines from them. Used to have great selection, with customer service to match! Seemed like a family business. This was a store where you could buy a first growth Bordeaux wine - but currently the website does not even include Bordeaux wine as a region to choose from. i have lived in Island Park for 21 years, I would go in here before superstorm Sandy and never really shopped around. but after Sandy, I they renovated and apparently their prices got even higher. They literally are one of THE MOST expensive liquor stores, especially when it comes to wines-with bottles as high as $2 to $6 more than other places. The only time you get somewhat of a bargain is when they have a 30% sale which when all is applied and deducted, it comes out to the average normal price of other places. And while we are on THAT subject- I bought a bottle of pinot noir which normally sells for around $14 from their $2.99 clearance bin in October this year. . I brought it it to a friend's house yesterday, opened it, and it was bad!. This is what prompted me to write this review. Additionally, the way they list their prices is confusing and frustrating- with three prices on one ticket display. I only go into this store if I am forced to. After years of buying by phone I finally visited Pop's last year and found to my delight that the staff were as friendly, the prices as low and the wine as good as online.
