Food was good. Staff was friendly and fast. No tap beers. The building is attached to the hotel, and they still were serving food past 6pm so can't really complain too much there. My fiancé had the chicken tenders and they were cooked amazingly well. My burger was pretty average. Parking, as you might imagine, is pretty easy being where it's located. This was likely the best pan-fried Walleye I have ever eaten. I don't like tartar sauce too much but even I felt this batch was pretty good. The chips were appreciated, as well. The second evening I attempted to partake in the baked Walleye. It wasn't bad. However, the resulting data compiled from two consecutive evenings investigations into The Walleye Experience revealed pan-fried to be proved conclusively as the superior cooking method. I will forever regret failing to order pan-fried Walleye on two consecutive evenings. Hindsight is 20/20, they say. My psychologist says I've got to learn to move on and no longer dwell on the mistakes I've make in my life. Reframe and label these "mistakes" and "teachable moments." So two days later, in another Wisconsin town, I ordered some pan fried Haddock. Maybe it was Perch? I can't remember. I'm fixated on the Walleye swimming in the cold waters of Lake Superior. Do they know that there is breading and oil awaiting to pan fry them? What other delicious fish are destined to appear on my plate next time I'm Up North? White Fish? Alligator? I've got to get back Up North. I dream of a brighter future where there is fish fry available every night. Not just Friday. All the days that end in Y. I'm happy this restaurant is helping to make my dreams a reality. Maybe next time I visit they'll even have more variety of fish to fry. Pretty bad. Way up North, not much around. Took our chance of eating here after a long day. Only one waitress, which hardly talked directly at you. She would walk up behind you and mumble so at first you are not sure if she's talking to you. (It's one of those things you have to see to understand how weird it was). Daughter ordered the fried chicken sandwich, which looked like someone you would have received in middle school. Hubbies chicken strips where done in an almond flour crusty thing, weird. I get they're not going to have fresh food out in this area, I expected that. What I didn't expect was the frozen food to come out frozen. Ordered Jalapeño poppers for some finger food and they were frozen on the inside. The chicken Parmesan tasted rubbery and the burger was dry and the onion rings I ordered with it were fried sogginess at best. Overall, if you're expecting anything other than frozen food prepare to be disappointed. I was expecting frozen food and I was still disappointed. There are much better eats in the area. I guess I should've taken the hint when there was no hostess there to seat us and not another soul in the whole restaurant. The reviews seemed good so we were inclined to try it, I won't be making that mistake again. Don't do it. Our service took minimum 15 for our server/bartender to come over even though there were other servers there working. We did place our drink orders first then she came back to take our food order but without bringing any of the drinks. Then a waitress comes by and brings out our salads and appetizers without silverware or napkins and still no drinks have arrived to the table. I finally get up and get silverware for us and all the bartender had to say was she was starting our drinks. But considering all of our drinks were just beer bottles I don't know what she needed to do to get them ready when all you need to do is open the bottle. Good was absolutely terrible to boot on top of the poor service. Wife had the fish tacos and they were bad and I had the burrito and all it tasted like is a frozen burrito from the gas station covered and I mean covered under lettuce. Even the waitress didn't know it was a burrito she asked who had the nachos and until we removed inches of lettuce we found that it was a burrito not nachos. We have found better places to eat and we will never be coming back here again read more

I found myself up in Ontonagon on business this summer and took the opportunity to stay at the AmericInn in Silver City. It had been an intense day, starting off in Madison then heading northwest to Eau Claire and Menominee, back east to Rhinelander and finally to Ontonagon. I was looking forward to hitting the mattress and getting some rest, because I was heading over to L'Anse and Ishpeming the next day. I hadn't stopped for dinner in Ontonagon when I wrapped up although it was around 8:00 PM. I didn't feel that hungry and I figured I might be able to find something in Silver City. This gamble paid out in spades, because attached to the AmericInn is a restaurant and pub. I walked into the pub, named the Porkies Pub after the nearby Porcupine Mountains State Park, and grabbed a seat at the bar. The pub was full of people, which I gathered to be a mix of locals, tourists and a crew of guys working for the FWS, judging by the trucks in the parking lot. There was one bartender working behind the bar, and when I asked if I could eat at the bar he deadpanned "Absolutely No Way" in a Texas drawl as he handed a burger to the guy sitting next to me. "First things first, what'll you have?" I was dealing with a pro here. I saw they had bottles of South Shore Nut Brown up on the wall and I asked if I could get one. "No, I don't think so." he replied as he popped the cap and handed it to me. He turned around and went down the bar, serving up another beer and grabbing a menu for me. It took about a minute. I'd drained that Nut Brown. It had been a long day. It was going to be a fun night. I'm not usually the type to tie one on while traveling on business, but the Porkies Pub had my number all the way. Friendly bartender, decent tunes on the jukebox, delicious beer, and Cubs game on the tv - I had stumbled in to a real find. I quickly worked through South Shore #2 and decided on the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. Simple, with a side of mayo perfect for using on the fries. I was done with #3 by the time the sandwich came out, and #4 quickly chased it down. Cubs were ahead and there was a beautiful breeze coming in from the door. I hadn't felt this content in a long time. The bartender comes up, gives me #5 and tells me how he made it from San Antonio to Silver City. This has now become my favorite bar of 2008. I wait for the inning to end and wisely decide not to go for the full six-pack, settling up with the friendly Texan and walking outside just in time to catch the sun going down. I'd been inside the Porkies Pub for a little over an hour. It was over all too soon. read more

Working in Ontonagon, staying in Silver City. First night ordered a burger w/ fries. Small burger for $10 but it was good and the fries came out piping hot so big plus there. Next night ordered hand breaded chicken fingers w/ sweet potato fries. Absolutely fantastic. Just wish they offered a buffalo option. 3rd night ordered French dip, again w/ sweet potato fries. Sandwich fell apart but still good. 4th night (yea I know) ordered chicken parmesan. Same breading as chicken strips whish was prepared from scratch so again...fantastic. Comes with heaping amount of spaghetti and two pieces of garlic bread. All of it good. Traveling for work alone so I ate in the bar. Good beer selection, but no draft. Both bartenders were easy to talk to and genuinely cared. Just eat here and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed. read more

I was camping at Porcupine Mtn State Park and really needed some food, as the pasty I had in Munising was 10 hours in my rearview. Porkies really stepped up, with a great local beer selection (all bottled, though) and a pretty strong mushroom and swiss burger on a nicely toasted, perfectly sized bun. Onion rings were a little sub-par, or they'd have received a five. Service was fine, typical small northern bar atmosphere. Most amusing part of the visit? Four inebriated patrons watching Wipeout and laughing hysterically every time somebody did a faceplant. Good times, Good food. Not spectacular, but given the remote location, pretty darn good. read more

Average food at the very best. I had spaghetti, not very flavorful. Made myself a salad at the salad bar, lettuce was pretty well perfect, tomatoes were really under ripe. All salad dressings were in pre-poured single containers. Staff seemed stretched, but was working hard to keep up. We ate here 2 nights in a row while staying at AmericInn. The first night we both had our favorite Keweenaw Brewing Company beers, Amber (Red Jacket) for me and Black (Widowmaker) for my husband. I tried the special Walleye sandwich with fries the first night. The walleye and fries were great, but they had burned the bun black! It was inedible, but that was OK, since I just ate the walleye and fries. That night my husband had the other special, popcorn chicken with fries. That was very good and he got so much chicken that we took home another whole serving. The second night they were out of the Amber, so I just had Miller High Life while my husband drank Black. I tried their Lumberjack burger (with fries) that time and it was great and huge. I took home half for another meal. My husband had the chicken tenders with onion rings. We both agreed that those onion rings were the best we have every had anywhere. There were plenty left, so we took those home and they reheated perfectly. It is really nice that the food is good here, since there is nowhere nearby. read more

Erratic service and poor food. Our server ignored us but was at the next table so much that they complained and told him to to stop rushing them. We ordered burgers. When I asked for medium rare, the server said that the cook will fry them until no blood runs out. Of course, it was well done. We were there over an hour - waiting for our water and then our food. 2 servers and there were only 7 tables with usually 2 each waiting for their food. Go into Ontanogon for a good home cooked meal and friendly servers. To be fair, the waitress was trying to help the waiter out. We left a tip due to her service. read more

Wow! What a difference! A new cook/chief with some very creative ideas. There is a new menu with special menu items on different days along with some really creative desserts. Try the rutabega sliders - they are fantastic! The menu now has some vegetarian options as well as many choices for the meat eaters and some Midwest favorites. These great changes make this a really good place to eat - with options for everyone. For this area this is now an "upscale" restaurant! And Mary (waitress) is very friendly, has a great sense of humor and does a great job! Prices are very reasonable. Try it! You'll be glad you did. read more

Paul's has a good selection of essential restaurant offerings, and they are well prepared. Service is always friendly and caring. Desserts are tasty. We've stayed at the Americinn several times and always enjoyed Paul's. Granted, Syl's in Ontonagon has a bigger menu and more creative dishes, but it's 20 minutes away. Paul's does very nicely. I'm no longer a bar person, so can't comment on the Pub, except to say that it looks well-tended and well-stocked. Our older son was able to get a Bell's beer served in the restaurant, and that's not a commonly found beer. read more

Best restaurant in the area, though that's not saying too much. The walleye was delicious, and comes with vegetables, sorely needed in a region that seems to lack roughage in the diet. They have a couple Bell's beers, which is nice. I only wish I had ordered the wild rice as a side, as the potato wasn't worth it. read more

I was quite pleasantly surprised. I come from a foodie town so my expectations for the only restaurant in entire area were not high. I had read an earlier review that said the chicken fingers (and any of the Pablo breaded fish) were good. My husband had fish & I had the chicken fingers. Really good. We were up in the Porcupines for a weekend waterfall tour and stopped at Porkies. It was a breathe of fresh air after a long day of hiking. Unbelievable food and a great atmosphere. Let's face it, there are few restaurants of any kind in this part of western Upper Michigan, and nearly all of them specialize in what might kindly be called Great American Road Food. I have been eating at Paul's for decades, and most of the time it has been an experience in Grease & Fries. But this year Paul's seems to have a new chef, and he has done wonders with the joint. Last week I had a fine broiled whitefish, and my wife -- a connoisseur of salmon -- said the salmon Florentine she had was absolutely the best ever. I'm going to try that tonight. There seems to be more variety in the menu these days, and that's important for a guy like me who's got to watch the fat and calories. The waitstaff is sometimes a bit rushed during peak hours, but it is always welcoming and friendly and takes a personal interest in its customers. The only real lack I can see is a rather sparse and bland salad bar, but that may be a management money-saving decision rather than the wishes of the chef. read more

When it says "pizza" on the menu, most "restaurants" would actually make the pizza in their kitchen. However we were served frozen pizza, on the cardboard from the box, with paper plates. I would never recommend this place to other travelers. read more
