I love Portillo's and was tickled to find out they finally came to Michigan! I found myself over near Lakeside Mall and grabbed a jumbo Chicago dog and cheese fries through the drive-through. I like that they have somebody taking your order at the drive-through. Service was quick and I got to scratch my Chicago hot dog itch. I love their crispy yet soft fries and cheese sauce. The regular size order is quite a bit and even enough to share. I've tried many different Chicago style hot dogs in the Chicagoland area but Portillo's is still number one on my list. I was really sad with this visit knowing my love for portillos. I ordered at the register with a worker and she wasn't the nicest, didn't speak much so I placed my order and kept it pushing. Some tables and floor around the store were dirty and I noticed one or two people heading back to the window because their order was incorrect.. Once I finally got my food, the sandwich didn't have much cheese on it, my fries were cold and the gravy I received was more like old flavorless oil. Very disappointing. read more

Very disappointed. Portillo's is absolutely one of my favorite places to eat. This was my first time at this location and right from the beginning it was off . The decor was plain and less fun than other locations. Took 5 minutes for someone to take my order. While waiting, I got to see the pre sliced meat dumped from a sad uncovered tray into the gravy. I saw plastic bags of gravy being warmed up in hot water and cheese sauce being dumped from a huge can. I imagine the process is the same at other Portillo's, but I don't need to see it. Plus warming in plastics is not particularly good. My Italian beef was dry and the bread was somehow hard on the bottom. I'd like a do over in Chicago! read more

So this location while it says it's in Michigan takes you to the one in Springfield, IL. My son and I saw it on our way to our hotel and I used to love Portillo's in Chicago. We arrived to kiosks for order or you could walk up and order with someone. The kitchens have windows to watch if you would like. The building looks just like the ones in Chicago with stuff all over the walls making you feel like you're in a retro diner. The food was delicious as always. My son ordered a fish sandwich (couldn't eat the hot dog bun due to the seeds and new braces) and said that it was really good. I had a jumbo chili dog which had their signature chili and cheese. It was a great dog. We shared fries and finished with eclair cake and chocolate cake. Overall we enjoyed the experience and will of course return in the future to other locations. read more

I've been eating Portillo's since my sister lived in Chicago. So I was so excited when this location opened. Same great food and same great service. But I felt bad because she told me she was deadly allergic to bees and they continue making her work outside but she takes pride in her job so she perseveres through it. I've had 2 previous experiences at a Portillo's prior to this visit. The first was in Livonia, and the second was in its native Chicago. Now they have one in Sterling Heights, and I'm all for having more locations. It's just comfort food at the end of the day. I love Philly cheesesteaks, but a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich is no slouch. I especially love mine with the sweet and spicy peppers and dipped in the jus. The only problem with having it served like this is that it makes the sandwich more messy and difficult to hold, but you have to expect that. Onions rings were great as well, but what wasn't great was the amount of money I spent. My meal, plus the drink and hot giardiniera sauce came out to over $20. It still blows my mind how expensive eating out has become in recent years. At least I left feeling full, so I can't complain too much. Aesthetically the place is nice, both inside and out. This is one of my favorite places! I knew once I heard it was coming, I would want to order everything off the menu. On this day they were doing a fundraiser and there were legitimately around 200 people coming and going, but they have plenty of seating inside and outside and although we were not part of the group, the charm of this place is like being at a theme park. I have been ordering their burger lately. It is so underrated. It is char grilled to perfection, with some crispy edges, it is so big, I typically need two days to finish it. I also tried their jumbo Chicago dog, which also needed two days to finish. We got their fries and onion rings, which are not to be skipped. My child had their beef and sausage sandwich dipped, also so big, it needed to be eaten the next day. We always need dessert here. Everything is good. I had the chocolate cake shake, which I dream about, but my child had the strawberry lemon cake shake, which she loves. I have never tried their Livonia location, but I always come here because we always get good service, the people are nice, and their food is great. Whether you're looking for a Chicago dog, an Italian beef, an Italian sausage, a burger or fries, Portillo's is the place to go. There are a lot of local businesses and you can rarely go wrong with any of them. The difference that Portillo's brings to the table is they have multiple locations and you can expect the same service, same experience and same great food at any location. I've been to locations in many different parts of the country, and it never lets down. My recommendation for a newbie would be the Italian beef / sausage combo, extra sweet peppers, jardinera on the side and an order of cheese fries. Now, if you're strictly looking for some dogs, you can't go wrong with Portillo's Chicago Dogs. I'd also give the fries a whirl as well. Would I go back? I do. Had a BOGO on the Italian beef sandwich. So we decided to give it try. Really liked it the beef was tender the roll was soft and I had light gravy on it because I'm still nursing back from radiation treatment n my stomach. I had a small fry which were crinkle fries and not greasy and downed with a small Coke, the service was good. The dining area was clean. Well I feel a little silly posting because I realized I never took a picture of our sandwiches - I was too excited to eat! The hot Italian beef sandwiches are delicious and I don't know where else you can get something like them! It comes with regular peppers or hot peppers. I got the regular and it really added to the taste. I think it would be a little boring without (but my kids ate it without peppers and were happy campers). You can get it dry, with gravy, or dunked in the gravy. We chose the middle option and I would consider the graviest option next time, just to try it. I was a big fan of the fries too (we shared a large fry as a family of 4). Drinks were kinda pricey for no refills, imo. Most places have self-serve stations so you can refill while eating but this place does not. Nonetheless, it was a great dinner spot before an event nearby. I'm mad that Yelp deleted the initial page for Portillo's and all the reviews. But, hey, here we are. I've obviously eaten here often enough to tell you that I love their food. I've been to their original location in Chicago and it's absolutely fabulous, so when they opened this one, I was more than excited. Their menus pretty standard, with items like chicken sandwiches, hoagies, hot dogs and a few other items. I usually go for their Chicago style hot dogs as that's my preferred go-to meal here, but I do occasionally get a chicken sandwich (not spicy) which is excellent as well. The food here's been consistent since dining here, so I love that. Service as well, as I've never had a tremendous wait for either placing my order or receiving my food. They have a monitor showing where you're order's at and they call it out as well when it's ready, so that's good. They have a good amount of seating here along with it being very well decorated. Their condiment station is always clean and well stocked, along with clean tables and I like that they take care of their lobby area. No hot messes, overflowing garbage, dirty tables...none of that here. Overall always a consistent and steady experience both in food quality and staffing. read more

We went the Portillos in Springfield Illinois on a Sunday afternoon. The store had a steady stream of business but not too busy. Our order came up fairly quickly and was hot. My wife had the Cheeseburger with everything on it, and she said it was delicious as usual. I ordered the Italian beef, dipped, mozzarella cheese and sweet peppers. The It Beef was delicious but they only give you two small slices of peppers. Fries are always good. The workers were friendly and considerate. The only thing keeping us from giving it 5 Stars were the dirty bathrooms. There was no soap to wash hands, no towels to dry our hands and the one of the 3 toilets was disgusting. Since I won't be able to make it to the upcoming Yelp Elite invite this coming 20th of February 2024, asked my hubby to drives us there for late night dinner. It already 8pm and we saw people coming in to eat or pick up their online orders. There was plenty of dining tables and chairs for dine in customers and drive thru service for those on the go! Ordered the famous Portillo's Chicago style hotdog with the pickles, green relish, tomatoes, hot pepper, mustard and diced white onions. The bun was soft and the hotdog is not salty. Paired with the fries and large vanilla shake. For two of us, it cost less than $20. They gave us a slice of chocolate cake for free since I registered with my birthday to their website. I was told by the cashier that Portillo's at this located has opened 3 years ago and just recently found out thru Yelp Elite invite. The dining area looks clean and the restrooms are kept the same. This is an ideal place to dine with a large group of family, friends or colleagues. We are most likely to come back to try the burgers and other items on the menu. The veggie dogs were incredibly flavorful and fresh, with a generous amount of toppings that really enhanced the overall taste. Portillo's has been on my bucket list for a while. I never made it to the Chicago location, so I was thrilled to see they have come to Michigan. The food is amazing. I visited for a Yelp event so I got to taste an assortment of everything. I would highly recommend the Italian beef or the Chicago dog, but everything was delicious. Used the drive thru to grab lunch; had a Chicago dog w no sport peppers, large cheese fries, and a slice of chocolate cake. Hot dog and fries were just above room temperature, not hot; cheese was very hot, so it took care of the fries. Chocolate cake was good, but very rich. Since Portillos became part of the Berkshire Hathaway group it's become like so many fast food restaurants--ok, but not phenomenal. What an experience! Tasty too. I don't even know where to start. I attended a sampling at Portillo's. So much to choose from, I started with the Chicago dog, interesting, I would turn my nose up on one, but, still love my Lafayette Coneys. Then there was the burger, yum! The spicy chicken was delicious, but, no way could I personally consume a whole sandwich, there were a few at our table that enjoyed a side of hot pickled veggies with the spicy chicken. My personal choice would be the Italian Beef, OMG!! Talk about homemade taste, it's tender and juicy and tastes like it came out of my Crock-Pot or oven. I'm salivating just writing about it. Got the Italian beef and sausage to go. Overall, it was as expected with a good portion of Italian beef and sausage in a white bun. Next time, I think I will get the Italian beef without the sausage. I got extra peppers, which you can see in the photo. I would say the peppers for an additional cost is worth it because it adds another dimension to the flavor. When we first heard that Portillo's was coming to town, we were really excited! We go there all the time when we go to Chicago, and now we were getting Italian beef sandwiches locally! We stop here at least once every few weeks, and the service and food are always on point. You might have to wait 5-10 minutes for your food to come out, but they are always pretty busy and it's never an excessive wait. Don't pass on the chocolate cake, it's delicious! If you sign up for the birthday club, you get a free slice on your special day. The Italian beef, sausage and hot dogs are my favorites. The only thing I've had that I don't care for are the hamburgers. The interior is cool, too. They've tailored it for the Detroit market, look for local music artists and of course there's Vernor's memorabilia. Some day I will get catering, they have a good selection, including things that aren't on the regular menu. They were down of flavor and casing snap. Onion rings were tasty and not greasy, but the portion was small for the price - insufficient value. Hot food, hot & slow. At 12:30 they just were not that busy, but half a dozen customers were waiting on their orders and lots of staff behind the counter was idle. They could benefit from a proper time & motion study to identify/fix this problem. No WiFi. Credit card reader is olde skool, swipe only. No chip. No Apple/Google/touchless pay. WTH?
