There is SO much that impresses me about the quality of work of Positive Pest Management, but what I want to focus on in this review is Leah Lee, the incredible general manager in the office. She is one of the most detailed and knowledgeable people I have ever met. Leah is a true expert in her field. I truly could not believe the level of detail and her efforts to help me. (I had moved into what I thought was my dream NYC apartment, which turned out to be a nightmare--as I had a crumbling wall in my kitchen behind the cabinets that had led to an ongoing infestation.) My landlord was not responsive to sending a contractor to fix the root problems, and I was at the point where I couldn't even live in the apartment. Imagine how stressed out I was! Leah helped me every step of the way with proper documentation, and went above and beyond coordinating in an ongoing way with several people in the company (including Benny, as well as Bennett the owner) to make sure I had what I needed in diagnosing problems. Her level of care and attention to detail and the time she put into the details was above anything I have ever experienced in a company! I waited quite a while to write this review, because I wanted to gauge the long term effects of their services. I moved to NYC from upstate about 6-7 months ago, into a first floor studio apartment in the UES. Then, in early January, it finally happened. I spotted my first apartment cockroach. It was the giant brown kind. I murdered it with a shoe (it did not go down without a fight), freaked out a little, bans then tried to tell myself that it was a fluke and must've snuck in under the door. Over the next couple of days, however, I had to murder several more unwelcome house guests. I was averaging 1 cockroach sighting every other day or so, so I reached out to my super about my building's free pest control services and began to read some Google reviews about bug sprays I could buy. Then came the straw that broke the camel's back. I was washing dishes in my kitchen when a cockroach the size of a small rat CHARGED AT ME. I screamed a few choice words before attempting to retaliate, but it scurried away behind my counters before I could grab a murder weapon. This completely destroyed any sense of sanity I had left. My nerves could not handle waiting the two weeks until my building's pet control guy's scheduled visit. And I doubted that the Home Depot sold a strong enough chemical that would make me calm enough to sleep at night. After abandoning my apartment and posting up at a bar, and then crying on the phone to my mother (like any normal bada**, independent, 28-year-old woman would do), I contacted Positive Pest Control for the simple reason that they had the best reviews on Google and Yelp. I didn't care about saving money. I would've paid to have the original Ghostbusters reincarnated if that's what it took. Well, Ben called me within 20 minutes of me filling out their online contact form. Frankly, most of our conversation was him talking me off the ledge. He deserves a gold star for that alone. He offered me a quote - which was WAY less than I was expecting to pay. I asked how many treatments would be required (assuming there was no way this was a "one and done" treatment) and he assured me that they've eradicated HORRIBLE infestations in a single visit. An exterminator was at my apartment the very next day, on January 11th. He was incredibly kind and could see that I was unreasonably anxious about the whole ordeal. (I had stopped going into my kitchen altogether.) He took the time to ask me details about what kind of cockroaches I was seeing and explained what kind they were (apparently I had "water bugs") and where they come from. He then sprayed a residual spray around my ENTIRE apartment and in every nook and cranny. He checked for and plugged any little holes, etc. that they might be able to enter, and then asked me to leave so he could spray a stay treatment. I had to leave for 6 hours so the treatment could do it's magic without killing me too, but I decided to stay away the entire night. I slept over at a friend's house and returned very cautiously in the morning. Upon my return the next day, my apartment definitely had a scent to it. However, it wasn't unpleasant at all! It smells a bit like hairspray and car wash. I actually enjoy it because I think of the smell as a magic barrier. I was instructed to mop my floors and wipe down my counters. I did this, still full of nerves and afraid I was going to be attacked by a cockroach. On January 13th (two days after the treatment), I tiptoed into my kitchen to find a single dead cockroach right by my radiator (the little monster's entry point, according to my exterminator). While this was still a disgusting experience, I was relieved to see that the hairspray smell was killing the demon spawns. It's now been over 5 weeks and I have not seen a single cockroach, or any traces (ahem, droppings) of them. HALLELUJAH. It has taken me weeks of exposure therapy, but I have been able to return to using my kitchen. (Although I'm so emotionally scarred that I still chug a glass of wine before cooking anything elaborate.) I'm also amazed by the fact that there is a 90-day guarantee, so if over the coming weeks the bugs come back with a vengeance, I can call the exterminators back and they'll come rescue me again, free of charge. Although, if I ever have another bug problem in the future, I'd be happy to pay full price AND give Positive Pest Control my first born. read more

They are very prompt and responsive in scheduling appointments. Nice staff and very personable. Unfortunately it just wasn't what I expected and ultimately I personally don't feel it's worth the rates charged. I admit that this partially my fault for not doing more homework to be more informed of what to expect. That being said the rates are very competitive with other services to be fair. My gripe is that even competitive pricing is still expensive in my mind for mainly consultation. This is a criticism of the industry at large and not specific to this company. The technician was a consummate professional but at the end of the day I don't think ANY exterminator services (outside of what a building management company can offer) are worth the cost because of the limitations of what external exterminators can do without contracting abilities. Again I will emphasize this is not a condemnation of Positive Pest specifically and certainly not Bennie who again is a class act all around - this is more just a PSA for others hopeful that outside exterminators will go above and beyond to eliminate all sources of the problems at hand - you should know unlike me that this is not what you will get. I learned through my experiences that there is only so much they can do and most of it you can do yourself for a fraction of what they the charge albeit not as efficiently but for me personally I would rather do the extra work myself next time and save the money. Otherwise they are very understanding and if you want someone to check for entry points and place traps, and use a foam gun on any exposed piping you should give them a shot just know that the service will cost a considerable amount more than just doing it yourself. If you have the extra cash and don't have the time to do it yourself these folks will take care of you. read more

I felt he was very good at informing me about all the procedures he was going to undertake (I had mice in my apartment) and after filling holes under the sink with foam and metal fabric he also put traps everywhere and told me I had 90 days to contact them again should I see any other 'intruder' in the apartment. I hired Positive Pest last fall to help me exterminate bird mites. While they eventually did help me get rid of them (on the second extermination in the 90 day window), which I am grateful for, the service and communication throughout was strangely unprofessional and unclear for a place with so many positive reviews here on Yelp. Overall, working with Positive Pest on my bird mite problem increased my own anxiety during a period of my life that was already a nightmare. The worst part was that the main office provided confusing instructions and was often defensive when I asked for clarification and support. I know bird mites are one of the most difficult pests to treat--but I had hoped for more clarity and empathy from Positive Pest. So much of pest infestation is an ongoing mental burden that can last for months, so clear expectations and understanding communication should not be undervalued. I'm writing this now, 7 months later, because I'm starting to get bites again, so I'm unsure if my first engagement with Positive Pest was even effective. read more

Here's a copy of my last e-mail to them: "We still have mice!!!!!!!! You asked us to pull out the stove and dishwasher. We did. You asked us to seal all the walls. The walls were sealed and plastered. We've had Darnell here twice, and another guy....slender, close to my age, here at the beginning. I call Leah, and I get the same damn questions. Please send someone here to inspect, and do what has to be done. I'm really tired of having the same questions every time. You've given a guarantee. Please live up to it." As of now, they're refusing to honor their guarantee. Avoid at all costs. UPDATE: Company has contacted me, and will be scheduling someone to come, re-inspect and find a solution. I'm happy to report this, and as soon as someone shows and things get better, I will update and revise the review. 2nd Update: Have had good communication with owner and staff. Things appear to be moving to a good conclusion. 3rd Update: Positive Pest has sealed all holes, and fulfilled guarantee. Mice are expected to be exterminated within 48 hours. Although my buddy exercised all his feline skills and instincts (and, after nearly an hour of play, dispatched our intruder) I wasn't eager to call him into service again, so I called Positive Pest. When you are getting unidentified bites and finding strange bugs in your bed, you want your exterminator to care about the problem, listen to what you're saying, and be knowledgeable about bugs. Ben helped me identify the source of bites I was receiving (fleas!) and walked me through a treatment plan where TWO other exterminators gave up or failed (one charged me $190 for a visit, only to tell me he had no idea what was biting me). Ben, on the other hand, actually knows his stuff, is passionate about the work and cares about the customer -- I really wish I'd called Positive before anyone else. This is my second time using Positive Pest Management. The first time I used them I had seen one roach in my apartment, it was around 12AM and Benett was up responding to me and sent someone out the next morning. The technician reassured me that I definitely did not have an infestation, but he sprayed and treated to make sure it wouldn't happen. After he treated, I never saw another bug my entire time of living there (2 years). I recently moved into a larger apartment building and truly had a roach issue. I saw around 70 within my first week of living here. The management claimed they didn't know there was an issue because no one was living in the apartment before me (since March). The building exterminator told me he couldn't move any of my appliances, therefore he wasn't finding the true source of the issue. I called Benett to come treat my apartment and he sent someone out the next day. Yohan came and found many many holes under my sink, behind my fridge, behind my stove, in my closets where there is piping, and around my door. He closed up all of those holes, put down bait in every room, and sprayed the entire apartment. After he sprayed, I found about 7 or 8 roaches dead on the floor (good sign). Throughout the week, I was in constant conversation with Benett. I was texting him pictures of what I was seeing and explaining the ongoing issue and he sent someone out right away when it was time for a re-treatment. The technician (forgive me, I forgot his name) came and re-checked every single area in my apartment for holes and nests. He found another hole above my door, where the wiring for my WiFi comes in. Up there he also saw some roach droppings, which is a sign that this could be where they were coming in from. He quickly shoved brillo in the hole and sealed it with silicone. He then told us he was going to spray something (very strong) in every crack and crevice to make sure we are getting everything out. My boyfriend and I left the apartment for about 2 hours to make sure the smell was gone. When we came back, we saw 3 dead on the floor (hoping this is the last of them). While the tech was here, Benett was in constant conversation with me asking me how it was going. I feel confident that this did the trick, but even if it didn't, I know that they will return and keep returning until the issue is solved. I am an extreme clean and neat freak and these guys truly put my mind at ease. Will continue to use their services if needed in the future. read more

So I've been getting bit in my apartment for over a month. At first I thought it was mosquitoes, but then I realized there were no mosquitos in sight. So my second guess were bird mites since I've pigeons chillin on my AC, on the regular (hey, it's New York City). I got on yelp and searched for exterminators who have had experience with eradicating bird mites in the past and Positive Pest Management came up. After reading the rave reviews I decided to give them a call and I'm glad I did. They were super knowledgeable and quick. The next day, I had an exterminator come and check the apartment out. He couldn't find anything right away, so he left a few sticky traps on the floor. A few days later I found some sort of bug stuck on the trap, and it turned out to be a B.B not a BM! I moved into my new apartment on the upper west side, and saw more bugs than I would have liked (building was built in 1900, so an occasional sighting is to be expected, but this was more than occasional). I called positive pest and they send someone out the very next day. My exterminator was pleasant, punctual, and patient with me as we went over what I needed done. We went over what kind of bugs I had and he was very knowledgeable about what my problem was. I left for the day and when I came back, the place looked great. He'd put everything back where it belonged perfectly. After the chemicals had some time to do their thing (I found a couple of dead bugs in the 2 days following the extermination, which is to be expected), I haven't seen a single bug since in my apartment!!! I was so thrilled with this service! Hopefully I will not need to use them again, but if I find myself with any more issues, I will ABSOLUTELY call positive pest management.
