With thread, interlining, and invisible folds, Mr. Chu altered the ending of my shirt and other beautiful clothes I kept finding, but he said "No it cannot be altered" when I bought him an oversized childhood sweatshirt with its faded print, tattered neck. Jess, the current owner, is the 3rd generation of her family to run this business, having learned her craft from her grandfather, the original founder and a master tailor from Hong Kong. I gave Jess two projects. First, I brought a top that I got from Siwa Oasis, Egypt, 18 years ago. I washed it, but I made a mistake by putting it in the dryer, and I couldn't fit my head through the neck opening. Jess found the least intrusive way possible to expand the neckline and hand-put-back part of the embroidery. She wanted to preserve the design and suggested I take before pictures for memories. Despite being swamped during wedding season, Jess took on the project and worked on it at home little by little for three months, bringing me in for a second fitting. She did not rush the job because she understood the sentimental value behind it. She even created new facing and piping to ensure that any of her work, as well as the previous work done by the Siwan, would not come undone. Second, I brought Jess a dress I bought with straps and no sleeves and wanted Jess to convert the straps to sleeves. We recently visited LNC to get a sherwani (formal Indian wear jacket) altered for my fiancé for our wedding, and I was incredibly impressed with the teams knowledge, service, skill and great prices. We brought the jacket in because it was far too tight in the shoulders - my fiance couldn't lift his arms up. We didn't know if it would be possible to loosen the fit but it was no match for Jess and Alice's expertise. They opened up the lining of the jacket to see how much fabric was left in the seams and walked us through each seam that would need to be adjusted and clearly explained why, which helped us understand the process perfectly. This was a particularly complex jacket because the fabric has a highly embroidered pattern, making alterations very challenging. However, the team did a truly fantastic and they were able to keep the symmetry of the embroidery perfectly intact. Thanks LNC's expertise, my fiancé's jacket now fits perfectly. They can handle everything from a simple hemming, darting a shirt, to more complex things like shortening the sleeves on a suit, or taking in a waist. Actual tailoring was pretty good. I did 1 pair of pants that turned out well. The cost, though, was $120 to take in an unlined pair of dress pants in 5 days. Unfortunately, I won't be returning due to the pricing. This is not a complaint, businesses can charge what they would like. I spent an hour getting 4 items pinned and only left 1 item due to the sticker shock of the prices so wanted to post just for transparency. 1. To bring in the waist of a pant or skirt (up to 3 inches): $50 2. To taper the rest of the item (so once you bring in the waist, you likely also need to taper the rest of the item to match the new waist line but that is charged separately): additional $50 3. If there is a zipper on the item: additional $25 or $35 (I can't remember because I decided not to do this). 4. Hemming: $25 or $35 (again, I only ended up leaving 1 item so I can't remember exactly what they quoted me). 5. "Rush" $20 (I asked for the item to be ready in 5 days) All in all to take in 4 items (3 skirts, 1 pair of pants; 2 skirts needed hemming as well; 1 skirt had a zipper in the back-so not where the tailoring would happen; 2 skirts had a lining; all items made of polyester), the cost quoted was about $450. Again, the tailoring itself was good. It wasn't a large project (literally just bring in the waist of a pair of unlined dress pants and then taper it down so it all matched-no reshaping, nothing fancy) so perhaps this is a place to reserve for complex or delicate projects but for an everyday item, it wasn't worth the cost for me. I only ended up leaving my pants (rather than, frankly, just buying a new pair for less than the same cost), because I needed the pants for an event. read more

Run Don't walk to LNC! The charming nature of the OG location on Mott is strong here at their new canal street location. Jess is so funny and makes you feel at ease. She spent a lot of time going through options with my suits and Alice was kind enough to do a quick fix on my zipper that otherwise fit ok so I could take back home. They are incredibly honest and works with you on pricing, what works and what doesn't work with the alterations and what looks good. Other tailors I've been to tries to make you do alterations to drive up the cost - complete opposite here. The quality of the work is hands down the best in the City! Actually I give them ZERO STARS I had a very disappointing experience at LNC Tailor Shop on Canal Street. I brought in five pairs of dress pants to have the waistlines let out and one sports jacket to shorten the sleeves. When I first arrived, I was genuinely excited to get my clothes tailored properly. The owner, Jess, mentioned she had two interns in training and asked if I'd let them handle the measurements under her supervision. As a first-time customer, I didn't want to seem difficult, so I agreed. The measurement process dragged on far too long because the interns kept asking Jess to recheck their work. She had to correct and remeasure multiple times, explaining things to them as they went. It became clear that this was part training session, part tailoring appointment -- not what I signed up for. After all that, Jess drew up the estimate and explained the extra charges. She required half the total in cash upfront, which I wasn't aware of beforehand. So I gave the $85.00 I had on me and was told everything would be ready in seven days. A few days had gone by and I got a message saying one of their tailors had a family emergency and asked me to come a week later. I completely understood and I agreed to wait. Two weeks later, I show up at 5 p.m. as instructed -- only to be told the work wasn't finished and to come back in two hours. When I returned at 7 p.m., Jess said only two pairs of pants were done and if I could wait another 1/2 hour the jacket would be done. I agreed to wait for the jacket. Jess told me that the other three pairs of pants couldn't be altered without adding extensions to the waistline. So after two full weeks, nobody had even assessed all my garments properly until the day I was supposed to pick them up? That's beyond frustrating and totally unprofessional. I paid for the three finished items and I left with the other 3 pairs of pants untouched. That's not how you run a business. There are hundreds of tailors in New York City -- do yourself a favor and go to literally any of them instead of LNC Tailor Shop. I will not be returning! read more

I used LNC twice this year for alterations to one old sports jacket and two suits which fit great when I was heavier, but not not now that I have lost a lot of weight. All garments required a lot of attention and substantial alterations. My wife also had one dress altered too. Jess was terrific in how she handled our garments -- both in quality and timeliness. She was meticulous in ensuring that the right alterations were made in the first place, and the final product was terrific. Jess is also very personable, and it was a pleasure to deal with her. After doing some research and reading their reviews, it seemed like they really knew their stuff--skilled across different fabrics and tailoring techniques. I ended up bringing in 17 pieces, ranging from small, simple fixes to more custom, complex alterations, and honestly, the whole experience was amazing. It is cash only btw A few things really stood out: * They kept the original hem on two double-layered crochet dresses without me even asking (which normally costs double--but they waived the fee). * They stayed open a full hour after closing so I could try on everything. * They took time to explain the more intricate work clearly and concisely both through text and in person. This was actually my 2nd try with a new tailor--my last experience (with someone who went viral on TikTok) wasn't great. LNC was a completely different experience. Thanks Yelp for helping me find a new Tailor in Chinatown! I used to go to a 2nd Floor place with the nicest aunties, next to the old Jing Fong Restaurant location, but sadly they closed a while back. This Tailor knows his stuff! The way he explained & suggested lengths & fit shows his years of knowledge. Switched back & forth between Cantonese & English, communication was good. He was also speaking to a guy in Mandarin. Cash Only. I finally took my pile of alterations & brought them in, for about $130 he did this: - $35 Shortened sleeves: lined spring jacket. The Tailor said that if I were to wear a sweater underneath, it would add more bulk and make the sleeve length go up a little higher- do I want the sleeve a little longer? - $25 each, Shortened sleeves: 2 sweatshirts (men's small to fit female XS sleeve). Couldn't taper them for a better overall fit, but shortened the length. - $10 Waistband: shortened a 27 waistband (waist gap!) on stretch jeans to 25/26. Used 2 sewn flat darts above both butt pockets. Seamless! - Lining of a pencil skirt: ripped from the back zipper down. The Tailor said this happened because it shrunk (not the skirt), what he needs to do is let out more room around the sides at the hips, so the lining doesn't rip only at the zipper. - $5 patch hole at armpit of a gauze shirt Took about 2 Weeks to finish, but he actually called me after about 8 days. When I went to pick up my clothes, it seem like a Chinese journalist, was interviewing him, recording the conversation. She was definitely from overseas, glad that he's getting recognized for his longevity! read more

Giving Jessica and the LNC team my highest review. I had a trusted tailor in Asia, and after many years in New York, finally committed to finding a tailor in the city. After reading several reviews online, I went to LNC to replace a few buttons on two skirts and to take in the waist of a dress. LNC repaired my requested buttons on the spot and even took the initiative to reinforce other buttons that had become loose. And repairs to the dress required the tailors to take out the entire zipper -- but it came out perfect, exactly what I hoped for. As for service: immediately, in first consultations with Jessica, she was candid with which repairs are realistic within my budget and when I could pick up. I appreciated the quality of the work and Jessica's insight-- she will have a loyal customer in me for as long as I remain in the city! And will always bring extra cash to tip the tailors. P.S. I went to a couple tailors shops to get my athletic (stretchy) shirts hemmed and they did not want to do it because the "fabric would move too much" when sewn or the job would not be worth their time. The new owner of LNC (the granddaughter of the owner), JessPepper, did them with the right machine & adjusted the garment by hand so the stretchy fabric aligns straight with every stitch against the machine. They even let me step back in the working station to show me how they do it, so I can tell a future tailor how it can be done more effectively. LNC explains the process plus gives you tips so you can go and tryout other tailors and not get ripped off. This is a different level of craftsmanship, confidence, and customer service (CCC). Do not overlook this tailor!!!!! I initially found LNC on Reddit after scrolling through and cross-checking recommendations all over the city. I needed to rush an outfit for The Met Gala, and within one week, LNC tailors were able to expedite my order and perfectly execute my job. I arrived with a pair of pants, a skirt, and a pleated dress I wanted converted into a skirt. I told them that I only needed the pants completed within the week, and they were able to prepare all three of my items for the same pickup. I am incredibly impressed with the workmanship and personal touches. I asked them to convert two dresses into skirts, and they kept all extra pieces (the top of the dress) plus made sure my new skirt had a size label, which they removed from the top of the dress and sewed back onto the new skirt. The night before the event, I was stuck at work and checked to see if I could send a courier to pick up the items. LNC very kindly offered to hand-deliver the items to me This was above and beyond. All of this, in addition to being well-priced! They were a key part in the success of my evening.
