We shared a few different dishes including some cod and scarlet shrimp and everything was cooked and prepared nicely. They even had some mini pastel de Nata for dessert that we couldn't pass up! Sadly, I'm STILL catching up on my Portugal reviews... So, Wifey and I decided that while in Porto, we were going to kind of wing it. No real plans, no reservations, no guilt, and no time constraints when it came to meals (well, except breakfast...which was included at our hotel). Our first night in Porto, after an amazing guided tour with some very cool sites and some delicious food stops for some sweet treats, both our guide and front desk person recommended VINHAS D'ALHO down by the river for dinner (a reservation would have gotten us outside seating , but that's ok...). Wifey had an amazing mushroom risotto and I had Black Linguini with Seafood (mussels, clams and shrimp). We started the meal with some bread and Qieijo de Azeitão cheese - the cheese was a smooth, creamy texture with a hearty flavor that was really delicious. The meals were what we came to expect in Portugal - not too fancy, the flavors of the food took precedence rather than the seasonings, and we walked away just full enough to share a couple desserts and an after dinner drink. I just wish we would have left some of the bread leftover so I could sop up every drop on the dish. I know I don't need to say it, since it's Portugal, but the service was amazing. It was a beautiful evening so we walked along the river after dinner so we didn't fall into a food coma. Man, I miss Portugal. read more

This was the worst restaurant experience we've had in Porto. We were really looking forward to dining here because several of our friends highly recommended it. From the moment we arrived, one of the servers seemed cold and dismissive toward us. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I let it go. We asked if we could be seated on the terrace, but we were told that those tables were reserved. I politely asked if they could place a table in an open area that was clearly part of the restaurant, but they refused. Instead, they offered us the table farthest away, which had a broken umbrella. They also told us that once another couple, seated several tables away, finished their meal, we could transfer there. However, that couple had arrived at the same time we did and had only just started ordering, so the explanation didn't make sense. When it came time to order, we chose just a few dishes because we wanted to share them. After that, the service became even less attentive, and it felt as though we were being ignored because we hadn't ordered much. Our food took a very long time to arrive, while several European customers who arrived after us were served first. The wait was frustrating. What upset us the most was seeing another group arrive later and request a table in the exact area we had asked for. This time, the staff immediately moved a table from inside to accommodate them--something they had refused to do for us. It made us feel that we were treated differently. When I tried to raise my concerns with the staff, I was told not to complain. That response was unacceptable. We were paying customers and deserved to be treated with the same respect as everyone else. Based on our experience, we felt unwelcome and discriminated against. Whether intentional or not, that is how the service came across. Sadly, we will not be returning. This was a very disappointing experience. read more

Such a high quality restaurant for a place right on the river. My family came here because on the way back from the dinner the previous night, we'd walked by the tables and turned our heads to trace the alluring smell coming from inside. The following afternoon, we came and had duck confit, a salad, and a mushroom risotto. I loved each dish because nothing was too salty. The duck was so tender and the risotto was not over cooked. A fantastic find for the area! Outdoor dining has a wonderful view of the water, but eating indoors also has a wonderful ambiance. The service was excellent! Everything we ordered was excellent! The sangria with red fruit was some of the best sangria that I have ever had (and I'm a huge sangria lover)! It had many different fruits: raspberries, blackberries, and gooseberries. Their salad was wonderful and lots of the same fruits as the sangria. It was a unique salad that had a really nice fruity vinaigrette. Also, all of the entrees were spot on: cod, filet of sole, and lamb chops. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant! read more

A bit hard to find but worth the effort. The receptionist at the hotel recommended it, and though we failed to find it on the first night, we found it on the second. Glad we did. Service was excellent. The cod and salad that we ate were both excellent. The cod came with a tomato based crust over a bed of potato and spinach. The Mediterranean salad was equally excellent. I loved this place. A total gem in the touristy area of Porto. We ended up here after our first few choices fell through, and I'm glad we did. Polished but relaxed place with servers who had a great attitude. We were seated in a lively room immediately at 9 PM on a Saturday. Big plates of bacalhau (salted cod) and tripas a moda do Porto (tripe stew) were served up, both were delicious and the tripe was amazing, especially as I'd never had it before. Both are typical Porto dishes. You're absolutely not going to be hungry after this. Wine list is extensive and so much cheaper than back home in LA - even the expensive by the glass options were 5-7 Euros and fantastic. Dessert was an amazing orange pie, which was deconstructed in a very cool way and plenty for two. The 20 year old Tawny port and always great Portuguese coffee also hit the spot. All of the above for two - 65 Euros. For a nice night out, don't miss the experience here. read more

The front desk staff person at our hotel recommended Vinhas D'Alho. Tried to find it given her directions the first night with no luck, but persevered the next night and are glad we did. The mushroom risotto was excellent, and my very generous cod dish was too much for me to finish. Had an excellent salad to accompany these choices. Good service and the largest gin and tonic I've ever been served in a restaurant. Would highly recommend. We ate inside where they had great music playing and the outdoor seating looked great too. read more

I read on other reviews that this was a "tourist trap", but I would have to disagree. There were several locals eating here as well. The staff was super attentive and super knowledgeable about the food they were serving. They were also really knowledgeable about wine. The Gomes de Sá cod was simply delicious! For starters, you can't beat the view of the port (so long as you can get a spot with shade). It's a snug fit with all the pedestrians walking through, but it adds to the fun of the environment. This place stays pretty busy. We couldn't get in at night, but scored a table at lunch. We started a little further from their doors, next to some construction, and once another table left, further from the noise, the waiter kindly offered to let us move, which was great. We had a vegetarian dish--a ratatouille swimming in tomato sauce, and a monkfish with shrimp in coriander sauce (see pix) that were both delish. We also loved the table breads--one had salami baked into it -yum. Really affordable lunch, we thought. Big bottled water, salad and two entrees for 42 euros. Nice staff. read more

Terrible restaurant. The waiter was very rude when we arrived. Very dismissive and seemed bothered to have to wait on us. We ordered the tomahawk ribeye and the sole. Thoughout our time in Portugal, we hadn't yet had the opportunity to have fresh sardines. The typical Portuguese dish of sardines with boiled potatoes is one we had been wanting to try, buy everywhere we'd booked a reservation, they didn't seem to have it on the menu. Well, the day before yesterday we happened to walk past a handwritten board outside of Vinhas d'Alho advertising a 9€ sardine special. Our lunch was planned. When we arrived we got lucky, as at the time there was an open table, but I think we took the last available one as from then on our, people were turned away. We ordered the sardines, the wife got a glass of wine, and I got a beer. When the sardines came out, we were initially worried we had ordered the wrong thing, as we were bless with a plate of 10 chonky sardines. We had to clarify with the waiter, just to make sure they weren't trying to pull one over on us unsuspecting tourists. They weren't. The salad and the potatoes, however, were very meh. The salad especially. The service was pretty bad. No one asked us if we liked it or how we were doing. When it came time to pay, the guy came over, I paid, and we left. No thank you, no nothing. BUT, and this is a big BUT, all we were interested in was the sardines. For they were cooked perfectly, they were salty and delicious..but everything else was pretty sub par. Had we come here for dinner or more than just our fill of sardines, we would have been quite disappointed. read more

We were seated immediately as it wasn't full but looked like a very comfy place to eat at. The starters of azeitâo cheese with bread and olives was pretty good! Seconds were grilled sea bass with a side of boiled potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, and salted cod (not fresh Cod) grilled with dried tomato breadbrumbs over a bed of spinach and boiled potatoes. Sea bass was very fresh, cod was pretty alright considering it has never been my favourite fish, but when in Portugal..... Our waiter who spoke good English was rather cold and not very service-oriented rushing with our order. Nevertheless we were later served by another waiter who was first class in service! It was raining cats and dogs and he offered to call us a cab which picked us up at the entrance. Reasonable price for 3 about 85€. read more

We were originally going to go to bachalau restaurant which is beside this restaurant but it was too packed and there was no seats for us for a party of five in one baby. So we checked out this restaurant and they had a seat for us almost immediately only a 5 minute wait even though it was fully packed as well. The servers were so nice and helpful and the food was just so honest and tasty. I would go back to this restaurant again if I ever visit Portugal. Not impressed with the service here, but the food was great. We sat unattended for awhile and not one person acknowledged us. After about 45 minutes into the meal, I was told that they ran out of the fish I ordered. Luckily, I picked a winner in the pork cheeks dish, but I was still infuriated about the entire ordeal. This isn't the cheapest restaurant in Porto, and in a fairly inexpensive town, that's not surprising. Nor should one expect a place that costs a little more to offer the best value in this town where a 7EUR francesinha can often really hit the spot. But you wouldn't go to a place like this for something like that. Tucked away on a side street, it's a little hard to find, but I would say it's worth the effort. The international European fare is well prepared and presented very nicely by pleasant and knowledgeable staff. The wine was quite good too, and the waiter offered a heated Spanish brandy for a digestif (I was here in December) which was delicious. And at the end of the restaurant, the tables by the window have a great view of the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia. As a matter of fact, I forgot my credit card here and when my girlfriend and I came by to pick it up the next day, the waiter (the same one who had served us the day before) offered us some espresso on the house. That was a very nice touch and much appreciated. This isn't a traditional Portuguese restaurant, so keep that in mind before you go here if you're looking for more local food, though they will have some Portuguese dishes. The portions aren't large and your bill will likely be a little heavier than at other Porto restaurants. But if you're looking for a clean, pretty place with something slightly more sophisticated than what you find at most other places in Porto, this may be an excellent choice for you. read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and were really glad we did. The space is quaint and cozy with a touch of elegance . We were lucky to be seated right by the window so were able to enjoy the beautiful view of the river. For starters I had their cream of vegetable soup which was very rich in flavor and just what I needed in this cold weather. For an entree I had the coconut wrapped shrimp appetizer which was amazing! The presentation of the fish was unique and so was the taste. Overall it was a great experience , some of the other dishes beige served looked quite pleasing . Great food & service. We were turned down by Bacalhau which is 2 restaurants away and am happy we ended up coming to this restaurant. We were luckily seated outside right away on a Saturday afternoon. The smoke salmon salad was delicious, the octopus and the veal (mains) were also perfect and wonderful. For our first night in Porto we have follow the advises of yelper and try this restaurant. The place is nicely situated on the side of the Douro. If you are only 2, you will have a nice table outside with river view. Food wise, we have tried the Porto wine tasting menu. 3 dishes provided with 3 different Porto wines. Great seafood, really nice setting and on certain nights, they have this amazing Fado performance with classical guitar mastery, and beautiful voices filling the air. This restaurant was recommended by our hotel's receptionist. But the salad was dry, with barely some dressing. The vegetable soup was nice. But their best selling Bacalhau (salted cod) with a tomato top was so dry that the tomato was burned. We had to add lots of olive oil and squeezed lemon to be able to swallow it. The ambiance was amazing,food was OK,but service was terrible.It was a beautiful sunny afternoon,but the waiter who kept on changing his name from Hose to Jesús had an attitude & said why we don't sit inside,since he feels cold outside on the banks of the river.I had to explain to him,that in the USA,the restaurants cater to customers & his answer was in Portugal the customers are at the mercy of Restaurants & their waiters.I couldn't believe what I heard,but that doesn't take away anything from the great experience we have in Portugal.People are exceptionally friendly & food & port wine is great.We'll come back to Portugal again. read more

Had a great time here. Who knew we'd be entertained with Fado and have a great meal? It rained the night we were there so sat inside in a newer part of the restaurant. There's also another part of the restaurant that is a bit more casual. It was exactly what we wanted to celebrate a birthday. They open with a complimentary drink of white port and tonic (refreshing!). I had the duck confit which was excellent. Husband had the bass. All good. Very enjoyable meal. Great staff. Would recommend. And just up the hill from the restaurant were five cabs waiting to take us home. read more
