bacalhau (cod) with turnip greens, tomato crust, and potatoes
    Nathan G.

I loved this place. A total gem in the touristy area of Porto. We ended up here after our first few choices fell through, and I'm glad we did. Polished but relaxed place with servers who had a great attitude. We were seated in a lively room immediately at 9 PM on a Saturday. Big plates of bacalhau (salted cod) and tripas a moda do Porto (tripe stew) were served up, both were delicious and the tripe was amazing, especially as I'd never had it before. Both are typical Porto dishes. You're absolutely not going to be hungry after this. Wine list is extensive and so much cheaper than back home in LA - even the expensive by the glass options were 5-7 Euros and fantastic. Dessert was an amazing orange pie, which was deconstructed in a very cool way and plenty for two. The 20 year old Tawny port and always great Portuguese coffee also hit the spot. All of the above for two - 65 Euros. For a nice night out, don't miss the experience here.

For starters, you can't beat the view of the port (so long as you can get a spot with shade). It's a snug fit with all the pedestrians walking through, but it adds to the fun of the environment. This place stays pretty busy. We couldn't get in at night, but scored a table at lunch. We started a little further from their doors, next to some construction, and once another table left, further from the noise, the waiter kindly offered to let us move, which was great. We had a vegetarian dish--a ratatouille swimming in tomato sauce, and a monkfish with shrimp in coriander sauce (see pix) that were both delish. We also loved the table breads--one had salami baked into it -yum. Really affordable lunch, we thought. Big bottled water, salad and two entrees for 42 euros. Nice staff.

Food was perfect service was impeccable. We were originally going to go to bachalau restaurant which is beside this restaurant but it was too packed and there was no seats for us for a party of five in one baby. So we checked out this restaurant and they had a seat for us almost immediately only a 5 minute wait even though it was fully packed as well. The servers were so nice and helpful and the food was just so honest and tasty. I would go back to this restaurant again if I ever visit Portugal. The views are amazing if he sit outside and enjoy your coffee

Starters: azeitâo cheese spread with bread and olives
    Yvonne L.

We were seated immediately as it wasn't full but looked like a very comfy place to eat at. The starters of azeitâo cheese with bread and olives was pretty good! Seconds were grilled sea bass with a side of boiled potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, and salted cod (not fresh Cod) grilled with dried tomato breadbrumbs over a bed of spinach and boiled potatoes. Sea bass was very fresh, cod was pretty alright considering it has never been my favourite fish, but when in Portugal..... Our waiter who spoke good English was rather cold and not very service-oriented rushing with our order. Nevertheless we were later served by another waiter who was first class in service! It was raining cats and dogs and he offered to call us a cab which picked us up at the entrance. Reasonable price for 3 about 85€.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

There were two other groups before us that were sat pretty quickly within 15 minutes or so. During the time we were waiting the hostess was extremely friendly and kept giving us updates on when the table was going to be ready and was making light conversation with us as we waited. When we finally got seated you could tell that the servers were definitely busy trying to get everyone's food and drinks out and so the same hostess came to us and said don't worry I'll take your order for you and told us the things that were the most popular which from my pictures we basically got everything she said LOL. And we were not disappointed with the food that we chose. Now we know why they are considered the house specialties. The flavors of the potato fish cheesy goodness dish I cannot remember the name of it was just so warm and comforting. I was worried about a fishiness coming through when you took different bites but no all the flavor is harmonized well with each other. The tuna salad that they made was extremely fresh and again was pleasantly surprised that though it was fish the spices and bread/butter combo that came with it really didn't give any fishiness. It was also well balanced. Now I will say though those other dishes were amazing our favorite hands down was definitely the grilled octopus. It was so tender and almost melt in your mouth. We were blown away by how well it was cooked. For sure I would say if you are in the area and have a good amount of time please check this spot out and give yourself at least 3 hours to enjoy the meal because again we sat there laughing eating and talking with the people around us because it was that fantastic of a Time for roughly 3 hours.

I was focused on the bifanas that Portugal was known for. I skimmed the chalkboard out the door as we passed by and my hunger instincts were right. The restaurant was small and intimate seating was at par with eateries in the area. A lot of musical instruments and trinkets adorn the walls which made up for an interesting gaze fest as we waited for our food. Lunch rush was ongoing so we had to settle being sat at the bar. That's always a plus as we got to witness the buzzing crew efficiently feed the customers. We got 4 kinds of appetizers that our server recommended. They were all good but we liked the casserole baked dish the best. My wife and I shared a rice plate of the bifanas (spicy pork steak) with fries. For drinks, I got a bottled Compal juice while my wife got her afternoon macchiato. Our bill was a grand total of €17. I even corrected them as our bottle of water wasn't included in the chit. Taste is ok but the fish is inedible. The pork was also pretty tough and the fries that came with it was soggy and limp. Price is average. Service is decent. It seems pretty popular as a local hangout also one that gets recommended a lot to foreign visitors but I find it rather disappointing.

And there were a series of small, minor issues that detracted from the experience. Bread course came warm, with a caramelized onion butter and some spicy bell pepper mayo that was ridiculously divine. This was my favorite course. Got the Cyber Punk tuna sashimi. Presentation was amazing. The tuna itself paired with the ponzu sauce was quite good. There were other elements like trout roe and crispy chicken skin, but the portions were sparse and I felt like the sauce drowned out their contribution a bit. Still a great dish though. Would order again. My main dish was the Vitela (braised veal). While the menu ostensibly presents these items for two to share, they can make half-portions of certain items, of which the Vitela was one. The meat was wonderfully tender. Flavor was had a slight tinge of bitterness and saltiness that didn't quite agree with me. Good dish overall. Service was kind and engaging. Possibly a bit too fussy over me for my American sensibilities, but they were very nice. The server knowledgeable about wine pairings and helped me pick out some for the courses I ordered. A couple of very minor issues here and there, like spilling some wine when pouring the glass, stuff like that. Also, the server shook my hand coming and going. Nice gesture but all I could think of was germs. Bathroom: Single-occupancy, upscale and nice. Toilet seat wouldn't stay up though. All in all, at decent restaurant but like I said, I had a bunch of small complaints that just added up, and it says a lot that my favorite course was the bread course. I would not repeat personally, but I think it might be worth a try for those that really love what's on the menu.
