Kedo after receiving excellent care from PAWS.

PAWS is the BEST. I was out of town, and I have a scheduled dog walker for my 1-year-old male rottweiler. When the dog Walker got to my house, she realized my dog had vomited in his crate. Once he was let out of the crate, he began to stumble as if he loss control of his limbs and passed out. She was unable to arouse him, so she called me. My nearest family member was at least 2 hours away. Long story short, the dog Walker was willing to take my dog to the vet because his condition was getting worse. She looked up the closest vet, and it was Indian Head. Now I know that they are not a fully equipped emergency facility, but something is better than nothing. When I called to give them a heads up that my sick dog was being brought in, they immediately told me to go somewhere else that they couldn't help him. I explained the situation that I was out of town and the dog Walker was doing us a favor, they still turned him away and told us to take him to their sister office PAWS, which also is NOT an emergency facility either, and had less staff than Indian Head. I called PAWS and explained the situation to them, and they told us to bring him in, and they would do what they could. PAWS saved my dog's life. He had ingested some type of toxin. If it weren't for my dog Walker and PAWS, my dog would no longer be with us. My dog was stabilized until my family got there, and then we took him to an emergency facility, and he was kept overnight. Indian Head has piss poor customer service, and they don't care about the lives of their animals or their families. I will NEVER go back there and would not recommend them to anyone. Dr. Ketchum, Malik, and the front desk staff are amazing. They care about the animals as if they were theirs. Thank you guys so much. Kedo is feeling so much better and we owe all to you. I have taken my dog here since he was a pup and I have moved far away now but I will still take this 45 to an hour drive just for them to see my dog. I love Shylah who has literally watched my dog grow up and the care that all the PAW staff has provided for me and my dog. Denim does not like anybody touching him and probing him unless it's me but they have really made an impression on him that he willingly goes with them! Dr. Parkin did an amazing job on his eye surgery back in '17 and I'm so grateful for this team of people and hope they can continue visiting my dog Denim.

Where do I begin!? I have a 14 year old small dog who feels like a part of my identity in a lot of ways. I have had him since he was 11 weeks old and we have had many the adventure! He's now getting to the age where we worry about every little change. I started taking him to PAWS when we first moved to the area (4+ years ago) and a fellow military spouse was working there. We loved Dr. Parkin instantly. His manner is very matter of fact and always in the best interest of our dog. We ended up moving to Alexandria so I took the old boy to another vet because of convenience. It was a mistake. The new vet said he had a heart murmur and would go downhill fast. We were shocked because he's such a spirited boy but we took it easy with him for a year or so and then he had some really bad breath and a swollen eye. I decided to go with my instincts and take him back to PAWS. He did have an abscessed tooth but not a heart murmur- he's just old! I'm continually feeling grateful to this practice. I know a bad day will eventually come but until then, they inspire me to enjoy this animal and not worry about what's inevitable. I will say I do have receptionists that I like over others but it would never ever stop me from going to Dr. Parkin or Dr. Quigley. I am proof they care about animals or I would not drive 40 minutes each way to have my dog seen by them!

VEG-ER is the best…read more Eariler this week one evening, we had to take our Siamese boy, Pablo, to VEG-ER not long before midnight. You know you've heard that if your indoor-outdoor cat who always comes home one day doesn't come home one day, something has happened. Well, it's true. Usually, Pablo (a.k.a. Bunky) comes back within minutes after being let out, but this day was different. We looked for him and looked for him, but came up empty-handed. Pablo has an AirTag and, curiously, it showed he was on our property. Finally, he appeared around 10:00pm at the back door. We were relieved, but noticed he had wounds on his hind legs. Because of our excellent experience we had last year with VEG-ER, we brought Pablo here. Pablo received top-shelf compassionate treatment from the VEG-ER staff, each of whom has a heart of gold. I really admire, respect and appreciate people that devote their lives to the care of pets. They're a blessing. We were told Pablo did not experience an animal attack, but maybe got stuck on a fence, and slipped. Pablo is home recovering now, getting stronger by the day. We basically live in the woods, and realize fully now that it is just too dangerous here to let him outside unsupervised anymore..

We've been to many pet ERs/urgent cares in the 8 years we've lived in NoVa and this the only hospital where we spoke to a doctor within a few minutes of walking in the door. They were thorough, took time to explain our treatment/testing options and answer questions, and made us feel like Norman's care mattered even when more severe emergency cases came in. At VEG, you can see everything, stay with your pet, watch their treatment, and staff are readily available to talk to or answer questions. That alone eased so much anxiety. Kenzie, one of the nurses that was assigned to Norman, was so kind. It was clear that everyone in the room cared about making these animals feel comfortable. More than one nurse came over to introduce themselves when we were preparing to leave Norman overnight. They offered us a room where we could stay with him if we wanted, and even asked what he liked to watch on TV to create a comfortable environment for him after we let them know he suffers from separation anxiety. The discharge and follow-up notes were also incredibly detailed, which made following up with our primary vet so much easier. No one ever wants to bring their animal to an ER, but this is now the only place we will go when we need urgent medical care. A HUGE thank you to everyone at VEG Alexandria for taking such good care of our dog!

Yes, we love our dog. Now, let's get a few things straight. First, we have had great care at Waldorf Emergency Care over the last 7-8 years. This has included multiple visits with our dog and our cats during that time. Dr. Fox has a lifetime of experience caring for all types of animals and is still committed to his clinic and patients. I have had the same experience with the other vets on duty, and also with the vet techs. Second, yes, there is actually a cost to pet care. Imagine that. Notice that each of the poor ratings were people complaining about the cost. It is an EMERGENCY CLINIC! Ever seen the cost of an ER visit at your local hospital? Jesus. If you can't afford the cost of care, either get pet insurance or a CareCredit card, or do NOT get a pet at all. Third, having observed many, many people in that waiting room over these years, I am astounded at the incredible impatience and outright sense of entitlement of so many pet owners. The pets are evaluated based on their conditions and rank ordered for care...no difference than in a hospital ER. Bottomline is that the poor reviews are not at all my experience. Read through them and see if $$$ is actually the core reason. That's what I got out of them.

Our cat had a terminal illness with tumors in his over extended twice the size belly. Only a cat scan showed it. But they didn't say that to us and it wasn't performed there. We were sent home with a 10 day supply of antibiotics. Our cat suffered for 2 more weeks before we took him to a different vet. It took her less than 10 minutes to find the tumors and because the cat was having a difficult time breathing and couldn't be cured: together we made the humane decision to put him down. We spent THOUSANDS of dollars at this vet and they could not figure out what was wrong with him. I'll tell you something though: they knew enough to ask us to pay for every other test imaginable; just not the one that would have helped our cat from suffering. Horrible, absolutely horrible experience here. Don't take your pet here. You will be robbed to the tune of a FEW THOUSAND dollars and your pet will not get the humane care it needs. This place needs to be put out of business.

I called this practice and they immediately connected me with a vet to talk through her symptoms. They suggested I bring her in just to be safe. When I arrived, I was checked in right away and even offered a drink or snack. A doctor quickly came out to make sure nothing was urgent, and after about a 20-30 minute wait we did a full exam. The team was so patient and kind--consulting with each other, keeping me with my dog the whole time, and making sure she was comfortable throughout. Thankfully it ended up being full anal glands and some irritation. They took care of it and gave me guidance on meds (which I already had on hand). Checkout was the biggest surprise: only $205, which feels incredibly reasonable for Northern Virginia. The clinic was clean, organized, and calm, and it was obvious the pets there were genuinely cared for (even the ones in cones having a rough day). For a stressful night, this place made it a really good experience.

You want to spend thousands of dollars and have your dog die in the end? This is the place for you…read more You will bring your 19 month old puppy to the internal medicine department with chronic diarrhea and vomiting because her normal vet referred her to a specialist. The specialist will say "Change her diet" even though you will have told him that you've already done that multiple times. You'll follow his instructions and see no changes in your dog. She begins to lose weight even though she is eating. You will go back, your dog will still have diarrhea and vomiting, and he'll suggest doing an ultrasound. You get the ultrasound done, and he'll say he's found "abnormalities" and then suggest "changing her diet" instead of trying to treat the abnormalities, and if we really want to find out wrong, she'll need an endoscopy procedure. So, you'll change her diet again, see no changes other than increasingly concerning weight loss, and spend multiple thousands of dollars for the specialist to perform the procedure. Your dog will be under anesthesia for several hours while he obtains 20-30 biopsy samples. The results come back a week later and the specialist will point out further abnormalities and stomach ulcers, and suggest you "change her diet" instead of treating the problems. Three months will go by and your once vibrant, healthy 50 pound dog will now be a walking skeleton, losing roughly 20-25 lbs. You've done everything in your power to save her life. She will stop eating and drinking water altogether for 4 straight days and become unresponsive at times, spending her days laying helplessly on a bed, with no energy do move at all. Her body temperature will noticeably drop, even though the room is at 75* and she's under a blanket. She will struggle to climb stairs or hop down from the couch, when she does decide to move. You see her suffering and on CHRISTMAS MORNING you will make the painful decision to end that suffering. You will bring her to MedVet, where she has already been seen for 3 months, including an ER visit, where they suggested hospitalization and an estimate for services which she has already recently had done, instead of an IV or any real treatment, and the vet tech will come in with a cone, because she is scared a dog with no energy will bite her. That vet tech will then, with all the compassion and empathy in the world, pull your dog by her neck, trying to drag her to the back, so, apparently, the doctor can look at her. 10-15 minutes will go by and nothing will be discussed with you as to what's going on. Then, the American Hero, who was an Army vet will come into the room and tell you you have have beautiful Belgian Malinois and say that she used to treat them while she was in the Army, and even though yours is severely emaciated, and has IBD, she will not euthanize her. If we want, however, we can surrender her. No one will ask why you are there with your beloved family member on Christmas morning, trying to end her suffering. They will just assume you are a piece of garbage who does not want to take care of a sick dog. You will leave and endure watching your dog suffer another two days before her normal vet clinic reopens. So, after nearly $7000 of credit card debt from procedures performed by the specialist, and visits to the ER and clinic, and prescription medications with very little instructions, in order to try and save my dog's life, all I have to show from it is a lifetime of pain, many years of payments, and a little cedar box that contains the ashes of my beloved dog. This place does not care about you, or your dog. They care about your wallet, and trying to obtain every dollar that's in it, at all cost. I love you, Coraline, and I'm sorry I took you here.

Service:5 Stars Pricing: 2 Stars…read more This past weekend, I had a very positive experience at VEG that was overshadowed by what appears to have been sheer greed. We brought our goldendoodle to VEG because he cut his paw; the laceration split one of the digits on his paw, with superficial flesh exposure. It wasn't the worst wound in the world, but bleeding persisted and it was deep enough that we needed to determine whether stitches may be needed. Dr. Forte and the technicians (I'm so sorry I did not get their names) were just amazing. And Sarah, who did our intake, was uncommonly kind and attentive. I had absolutely zero complaints with the staff. My sole complaint was with the pricing of a pain medication. I understand that emergency treatment is not inexpensive; it's just the nature of the beast. Still, when the Dr. said the total came to $400 for the exam, cleansing/bandaging of the wound and medication, I was a bit surprised so asked for a rough breakdown. The culprit, in my view, was a common, canine, pain medication, with which I was familiar. The cost was $93 for 14 pills. I asked the doctor if we could purchase it elsewhere and she said we could. When I filled the prescription at a grocery store pharmacy, I was shocked and then angered by what I learned. The prescription, for which VEG was charging $93, was $9.99 at my local Giant pharmacy. I could not believe (and still do not) a reasonable justification would exist for such an excessive medication markup. Surely, I thought, this chain hospital has access to preferred/wholesale pricing. Parasitic was the word that came to mind. I saw a business exploiting people already experiencing stress and vulnerability as the result of a beloved pet's sickness or injury. Although I was very pleased with the service we received, I am just very disappointed and troubled by this issue, to say the least. Certainly, this is not unheard of in the society in which we live. But VEG ownership/management, I feel you do a great disservice to the excellent employees who, clearly, work so hard to represent you in the best and highest light. With respect, do better...

From the second I walked in all attention was on MY BABY'S Care!! The care and treatment that was shown reminded me of the old days when vets cared about the animals (sick patients) and people (usually distraught and scared) they saw, and not how it seems now a days when you and your animal are treated with no more concern/ care/ value/ compassion than you are treated at the grocery store in a check out line. VEG claims to be dedicated to making the animals care and the people's care the FOCUS, and my experience was just that!
