Service:5 Stars Pricing: 2 Stars This past weekend, I had a very positive experience at VEG that was overshadowed by what appears to have been sheer greed. We brought our goldendoodle to VEG because he cut his paw; the laceration split one of the digits on his paw, with superficial flesh exposure. It wasn't the worst wound in the world, but bleeding persisted and it was deep enough that we needed to determine whether stitches may be needed. Dr. Forte and the technicians (I'm so sorry I did not get their names) were just amazing. And Sarah, who did our intake, was uncommonly kind and attentive. I had absolutely zero complaints with the staff. My sole complaint was with the pricing of a pain medication. I understand that emergency treatment is not inexpensive; it's just the nature of the beast. Still, when the Dr. said the total came to $400 for the exam, cleansing/bandaging of the wound and medication, I was a bit surprised so asked for a rough breakdown. The culprit, in my view, was a common, canine, pain medication, with which I was familiar. The cost was $93 for 14 pills. I asked the doctor if we could purchase it elsewhere and she said we could. When I filled the prescription at a grocery store pharmacy, I was shocked and then angered by what I learned. The prescription, for which VEG was charging $93, was $9.99 at my local Giant pharmacy. I could not believe (and still do not) a reasonable justification would exist for such an excessive medication markup. Surely, I thought, this chain hospital has access to preferred/wholesale pricing. Parasitic was the word that came to mind. I saw a business exploiting people already experiencing stress and vulnerability as the result of a beloved pet's sickness or injury. Although I was very pleased with the service we received, I am just very disappointed and troubled by this issue, to say the least. Certainly, this is not unheard of in the society in which we live. But VEG ownership/management, I feel you do a great disservice to the excellent employees who, clearly, work so hard to represent you in the best and highest light. My name is Zero, and Dr McNabb helped me get better. She was very nice, compassionate, patient, lnowledgable, and comfortable. My Human kept thanking Dr NcNabb because of how awesome she was. Also, the male nurse who was helping her (my Human did not get his name) was also cool. He checked in on me often -- which I know comforted my Human and made them much less anxioous. (Although we were both wildly exhausted in this photo, the smile/grin my Human has was genuine, and I was as at peace as I ever could be at a vet -- because the staff was so patient with my fretful Human, and I was receiving amazing care .) There's something that sets this place apart from the pack, honored relationships. Fire the first time, we were encouraged to stay with our pet the entire time. It helped her greatly to know that we were there, especially while she was in pain. The wait was long, just as it can be in an emergency room for people. Seeing the treatments, like fluid infusion and blood draws was interesting. The human snacks also made that long night a little better. read more

Our beloved dog of 15 years needed emergency care twice from VEG. Both times, they were competent and caring, and the price was reasonable given that this is an emergency vet. Would definitely use them again. read more

I'd never heard of Veg until a friend told me about what great service he received from them during a recent visit. I ended up at VEG after leaving a well known pet ER on Falls road heading to another location they referred me to in Bowie. I called explaining the issues my pet was having, I was put on hold and soon the Vet herself was talking with me. I desided to stop by, met with a wonderful VET. There was no good news, in the ended up having to put my dog to sleep. All of the staff was amazing, no one was pushing me for more and more costly testing for something that was going the end my dog life sooner than later. I've never visited a VET where I felt like the truly cared about my dog, most just want to keep selling a product or test to you. read more

I've been here twice now with two of my cats. I am so deeply grateful for this practice. Them being open 24 hrs was the game changer. Both times I needed to get my cats seen were well after 5 pm. I would go in regularly to visit my cat the first time I went. They are just a very helpful and caring facility. I will 100% continue going here when I need to. read more

Awful...where to start. You are quickly seated in a large room where there are lots of dogs and cats (seats are comfy). They have some small rooms with doors but you have to ask for them (wish I had known). Eventually a vet gets to you, does a quick look and then writes up an estimate. The estimate part takes the most time. By the time you see the estimate you find out, this just cost you $205. What they don't tell you is this charge is for "the exam and treatment plan"...I'm calling bull@#*t. So no matter what you are already in for the $205 then comes the exorbitant charges from bloodwork (around $200) to prescriptions (about $220 compared to less than $20 at chewy.com). It is so overpriced because they know you will do anything to take care of your pet. My advice is unless it is a life threatening situation and there are no other options, go elsewhere. read more

I can only give these guys a 2 because I didnt stay to run the whole recommendation and some of what was fear of runaway costs hit me. I was left a $2200 document on my phone while I sat there, and everyone left the room waiting for me to check the acceptance box. I needed more info but suddenly no one was around. Thats not a good thing in an ER. I opted to just take him out of there with flea treatment which I was grateful they did, but I wasnt confident of anything else. I did have to euthanize my guy two days later as he wasnt makign red blood cells for some undetermined reason. So thats all I'm going to say. The place looks promising, very promising. Our dog had a nose bleed later in the evening and our vet had recommended this emergency hospital a few weeks ago. It was close and off we went. When we entered we were greet and immediately taken back for assistance. We were placed in a room and seen by a vet tech quickly. She was efficient and compassionate concerning our dog. The vet came not too long after. The most impressive part was how everyone was so friendly and compassionate and willing to assist. We were given an ice pack for his nose to lessen the bleeding. Even though we made a mess with the blood from the nose and hair from our dog everyone remained friendly and attentive. We were particularly impressed by there options provided for care and estimates for the various options. We've had our pets in emergency facilities many times but not with this level of caring and efficiency. I had to take him back a few days later and it was better than our first experience. If this were a normal veterinary practice we'd switch in a heartbeat. It may appear to be chaotic but it is organized. read more

This location and this staff provided the most exceptional service at a time when our family needed it the most. Recently my husband and I brought our dog here who unexpectedly fell critically ill. I had not been here before so we gave a call on our way in just to let them know we were coming and by the time we arrived they already had a table ready for her and were waiting to take her the moment we walked in. We ultimately had to make the only humane option available for her case which was to provide her a comfortable walk over the rainbow bridge in our arms. Although we were crushed (and still are) to lose her, we were grateful to the entire team for the thoughtful care they provided. They were communicative, invited me to stand close to her while they worked and the Dr broke away a few times to explain to us what was happening. We even just received in the mail, a handwritten card with messages from each person on her care team that were personalized with things I had mentioned while there about my sweet dog. I dont know how many staff members were on that evening, maybe 6 individuals? Each of them were equally lovely, from the medical team to the front desk staff and I think that is a sign that the culture of this office is to truly care of the humans and the animals that own them ;) To the VEG team, Keep up the amazing work. On top of the provider being unprofessional, the staff was beyond disrespectful. How can this practice run on disrespect. How can you tell a person that it was their fault that their dog got sick! I Do NOT Recommend VEG ER for Pets in Elkridge, MD: please read to save yourself the heartache! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I'm writing this review through heartbreak and anger after what our cat went through at VEG ER. After our cat had her back left leg amputated at Spay Now in Columbia, we took her for a follow-up at Spay Now in Columbia, and we were told everything was healing well. She was doing great for a few weeks--active, healing, and back to being herself. Then we noticed some oozing around the amputation site, so we called VEG ER in Elkridge to have her checked out. When we explained the situation over the phone, the receptionist said, "Oh yeah, she's probably cooked." How is that an acceptable or professional thing to say about someone's pet? We brought her in, and they ran bloodwork and X-rays. At that point, they told us everything looked normal--her internal organs were fine and her bloodwork was good. Despite that, they didn't begin her actual procedure until around 9 PM. She was clearly put on the back burner, and when they finally did act, they chose to tap directly into the healed area instead of starting her on antibiotics. The site that was healing cleanly looked butchered after they were done with her. It was horrific. What had been a normal post-surgery wound now looked like someone had carelessly reopened it with no regard. It was inhumane. After the procedure, everything went downhill. They told us her white blood cell count had dropped significantly, and she began to decline rapidly. We followed up with our regular vet the next morning, who told us that the way VEG ER handled the wound likely introduced bacteria, leading to a serious infection and eventually sepsis. Just days later, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her down. She was only 8 years old. We are devastated and truly believe that if we had never taken her to VEG ER, she would still be alive today. We believe their careless, rushed actions and lack of proper judgment led to the suffering and death of our sweet cat. She deserved better. All pets do. Please stay away from this place. Don't risk your pet's life. read more

On June 10th, I brought my miniature poodle, Dakota, in for a minor (non-life threatening) wound on his left side. The wound was about 5mm ( very small)  but was showing signs of infection. He had an upcoming appointment with his regular  vet June 13th. However, I didn't want my dog to have to wait three days for treatment. I made the unfortunate decision to try VEG to get the wound cleaned and have antibiotics prescribed to hold him over until the 13th. We were checked in around 6: 30 pm  I believe, and seen around 8:30.  The vet recommended just what we brought him in for, cleaning and antibiotics. However upon cleaning the Vet recommended Dakota receive a drain since he said there were signs of having a pocket under his skin, which would require surgery to have a drain inserted. This did seem extreme considering the size of the wound, since the wound was already clean and antibiotics were prescribed. But trusting the vet and having my Dakota's interest first, I thought at the time this was the best option for my boy. Looking back this feels more like a "upsell" in services.  We were  told around 10:30 this would take several hours due to the amount of true emergency cases coming in. That we could leave and we would be called when Daktoa was ready to be picked up. I am familiar with the risk of sedation. However had it been explained to me that his non-life threatening wound would be treated with a life threatening procedure, I never would have agreed with the recommended treatment.  At 10:30 I left to drop off my partner at home to get some sleep and came directly back. I am so thankful I was able to spend Dakotas last hours with him.  However, I will never forgive myself for taking him to VEG in the first place. It is our responsibility to make sure our pets are loved, and given the very best care. I failed my dog by trusting this facility.  Around midnight I had a strong urge to take Dakota home, but after talking to Vet, He made me feel that if I left, I did not have Dakota's best interest at heart, and would be right back at the emergency care treating the same wound. At 3:30 AM, June 11th we were the only patients left and the very last to be seen. Dakota was prepped for surgery. When an animal is under anesthesia their life is in the hands of the veterinary team. That team is trusted to control the animals breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. If something should go wrong that team should have medication on hand to reverse medications and stabilize the animal. This was not the case with Dakota. When Dakota stopped breathing, the surgery was still continued and I did not see a sense of urgency to stabilize him or reverse the meds. I watched in horror as the surgery was being performed on my dog who was not breathing!  It was not until after Dakota stopped breathing that he was then intubated! I watched the vet tech going around for medication and dosages with no sense of urgency when it was already too late. This medication should have already been prepared and on hand in case of emergency.  I watched them perform chest compressions on Dakota's dead body for 30 minutes knowing that he wasn't coming back.   This experience was beyond traumatic and something that I will never get over or forgive myself for. It has left me with continuous nightmares, and void in my heart. I brought in a healthy, happy, loving dog for a non life threatening injury and honestly feel like he was murdered due to lack of experience and preparedness.  Gross negligence. The surgery was not necessary. I was in complete shock watching my best friend die. I feel utterly deflated and have a giant hole in my heart. I can't stop blaming myself for bringing him to VEG. Please make sure you are aware of the procedures recommended to your pet. If your pet doesn't need an additional procedure, please only stabilize your pet and take him to your regular vet the next day. In this area we are not short of Emergency Veterinary facilities, please research before taking your pet here. read more

I would like to thank the Veterinarian and Staff of this facility for the compassionate care which we received last Saturday. Our beloved Yorkie, Toby, wasn't eating or drinking for two and a half days. We could see him failing and knew we were facing a terrible decision. Our Vet wasn't working but his staff was, and they gave us the name of this facility, so off we went. We were greeted by a very personable young woman who explained the steps to perform the euthanasia. Then we were given a private room where the Vet and staff came and started Toby on his way to the Rainbow Bridge. We are all so sad and miss our little guy. He turned 17 on August 30th. How wonderful to have him to love for that long. read more

worst place ...took dog in for respiratory distress. vets put my dog in oxygen for 5hours without doing a chest X-ray or anything for that matter to try and see what was wrong and seeing him not improving. than gave him a sedative which he ended up passing from.they where to busy helping everyone else there as my dog sat there suffering. he need more oxygen but instead of putting him in his own tank they prioritized ones paying more for there pets and didn't do shit for mine. We took our baby to VEG at midnight for what turned out to be a minor ear infection, but looked a lot more serious initially. We were so impressed from start to finish. There is a pre check in and we're taken straight back when we got there. They were professional, caring and made us feel validated in our concerns. They cared for our baby as if he were their own. read more

The VEG Columbia staff saved my pups' life. Our vet recommended VEG when our pup needed emergency surgery to remove her ruptured spleen and the 2.5 lb mass that had grown onto it. The staff at VEG included us in all aspects of her care - we never had to leave her side: not while we waited for the operating room to be prepped, watched her surgery thru the OR window, keep her calm post-op as the vet tech prepared her to EKG monitoring or sat with her at/in her kennel thru the next two days she was there. VEG is the only emergency pet hospital that didn't leave me in the waiting room not knowing how my pet was. I was PART of her care. I was made to feel welcome and could ask anyone anything. I was even offered a cot with fresh sheets if I wanted to stay with her thru the night. VEG is the future of emergency pet care. read more

Do not go here. Brought my very ill dog to the clinic and they wanted to charge me $4500 to keep her overnight and wouldn't do bloodwork unless they kept her. We said no, paid $300 for the services they did perform and saw our own vet the next day. My regular vet was shocked that they didn't do blood work which was necessary for thorough treatment. Some of the vet techs seemed very inexperienced, too. read more

I had to bring two of my dogs here in separate occasions and was treated great, the vet and staff informed me of every step and the reason for doing it. The staff always asked if they could get me anything like coffee or a blanket. Both dogs had infections one in her lungs the other in the intestines. They were treated with IV antibiotics and I was sent home with some, they were good to go in just a day. My YorkiePoo needed emergency service and they came, picked her up and treated her for what could have been a life ending situation. Can't say enough good things about them. read more

My delicate senior sir havanese was very sick and they took excellent care of him. The team is wonderful and trustworthy, honest and caring. I definitely recommend them in an emergency. Yea it costs a lot but other emergency vets will cost you even more. The front desk team, nurses, tech, and doctor were all excellent. read more

Very helpful staff I have had need of advise about my dog twice in the last month. I called the first time because my dog had managed to eat a coffee bean off the floor before I could get to it and I know they are toxic for dogs. They were very helpful by phone to assure me he would need to be observed, only, due to his size and only one bean. I called them again yesterday to inquire if they could help with a gastro problem the dog has if he experienced distress with it, again. I was able to speak to a vet and she helped me even though VEG would not be able to assist with this specific problem. I am impressed by the professional and kindly manner with which I was treated. I was on a 6 hour waiting list from another vet ER. I was so worried about my pup and so grateful this facility took my concerns seriously and didn't brush them off. Their mistakes nearly killed my cat. My cat was there for what turned out to be a UTI. They made so many mistakes that they nearly killed my cat. They unblocked him, great. They said there was no bacteria in his urine, but they put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic anyway. They also gave way too much IV fluid, which caused fluid around his heart. I know of other people who have had cats die just for this reason alone. The second full day that he is there they said he still has blood in his urine, and they didn't know where it was coming from so, they were going to remove his catheter to see if it stops. (I never understood how that was going to help but assumed they knew what they were doing. Apparently, I was wrong.) Later that night, I get a call that we need to come see him. He is getting worse. His red blood cells have dropped extremely low, and now he also has a kidney infection. Removing the catheter didn't work, so they have to replace it. We were told late that night that he was getting worse, and we would probably need to make a decision about euthanizing him the following day. I got a call the following day saying that they found the problem. Apparently, he had a "rare" bacteria in his bladder, and they had to change his antibiotic. So the reason he got so bad is because he was on the wrong antibiotic for several days, and it was killing all of the good bacteria so that bad bacteria could run rampant and cause even more harm. Basically, they put the bacteria on fast forward, which caused his health to deteriorate even faster than if he had no antibiotic at all. Thank God they finally found the cause at the literal last minute. They would have killed him one way or another by accident or euthanasia. Then, they billed me more than $11,000 for a UTI. Also, I had given them my daughter's phone number to reach me in an emergency because my phone is have trouble receiving voicemail. They had overheard that she had applied for Care Credit to help me finance the treatment. Her name is not on the account in any other way except as a backup phone number if I can't be reached. This is my cat and my responsibility. They billed her Care Credit account even though they did not have authorization! This is FRAUD! They couldn't reach me, apparently, even though they have my email and phone number and address. They just decided to bill my daughter without authorization. I don't know how they got her information because no one gave it to them. They were only given her first name and phone number. Don't trust the people with your pet or your money! Update: I just discovered that the reason they suck so bad is because most of the staff are STUDENTS. They are using our pets as their practice without telling you that up front! This should be illegal! I would have never taken my cat there in the first place! read more

There are two days a week regular vets are closed and pet owners rely on an emergency vet for emergency services. My dog and I spent 4+ hours waiting to be seen. They had ONE vet on duty. One. On a weekend when it is our only option. My poor dog has been vomiting and diarrhea and the wait was really hard. We had to keep leaving so he could poop. Finally we ended up having to leave due to having to feed the rest of my pets and being told it could still be several hours yet to go, As a few cats seemed to take priority. They were able to walk straight in and were seen immediately. The vet area was freezing cold and I just couldn't do it anymore. So now I have to take off work tomorrow, lost time, to try to see if my vet can get him in, even though they are currently booked. I'm very worried about the health of my dog as he is not eating in addition to the diarrhea. Horrible. I have been VEG with the same problem before on a weekday. Where they actually have multiple vets working and very few pets there since vet offices are actually open. The fact that they only had one vet is very unprofessional and dangerous to the health of everyone's beloved pets. I will never return and will be sure to share my story with people I know who use them and anyone else who will listen. You just waste your time and your pet will still be sick. I feel so bad for my dog and hate that they couldn't help him feel better. Ridiculous and unnecessary. Staff your business accordingly to meet the needs of pets and pet owners. read more

Cannot say enough positive things about them. From the techs, nurses and vet, everyone was extremely nice, and knowledgeable. I could tell that they loved animals and their jobs. They had the skills, supplies and equipment to take care of my beasts. They also had a challenging patient and I was truly impressed with their patience and compassion for the injured animal. read more

I've been here twice so far (don't ask, LOL) and both times the staff has been great. I've been to human & pet ERs many times over the years and I have to say the staff here is coordinated, friendly and do their jobs very well. They have kept me apprised of what is happening with my pet and what is about to happen. I am very grateful to be able to be in the treatment area with my dog, rather than in a waiting room wondering what (if anything) is happening. I hope I don't need to return to this ER but if the need arises I won't hesitate to allow them to treat one of my dogs. read more

This was our first time at this facility and while the facility was very nice and the staff was friendly I found they were a bit unorganized. I realize it's a new group and it takes some time to get your team on the same page but we were a little let down by the whole experience. Our dog was there because she had ingested some medication that was toxic for her size. Time is of the essence when dealing with a toxin. We had called poison control got a case number, called ahead and we were at the facility within 20 minutes. We and another lady were there and all the other patients were in cages so it wasn't a busy time and yet it took a couple of hours for them to administer the active charcoal she needed and the tech had to be told she needed fluids by me since there was some lack of communication between the vet and the tech. Once we left I was told we would be contacted between 9-10 the next day and we never received a call so I called. After being put on hold the first time for some time the call was transferred to a voicemail I had to call again and then I was on hold a second time with no one coming back to the phone so I had to call a third time. The tech was very nice and explained it was busy and assured us our dog was ok which was all we wanted to know. The doctor later called and told us we could pick her up between 1 or 2pm. We showed up after 2pm which gave them enough time to get her ready. She was still hooked up to an IV and after waiting another 1 1/2 hours to take her home we finally left. We had to ask what the hold up was since there were no medications going home with her and we had paid the night before. I feel they have dropped the ball when it comes to organization. I took my pet to this clinic based on high ratings and positive reviews. However, my experience was negative. My pet was treated by Dr Aaron. My overall impression is that VEG specializes on euthanasia and possibly traumas, i.e. when the issue is very obvious and simple they might be able to help. However, they do not have experience and capacity to do diagnostics. I paid $900+ for x-rays that did not show anything relevant to the issue my pet had and received improper diagnostics, false hopes for my per recovery (I was told that he'd be doing better by the evening) and unnecessary medication(confirmed by three other vets) that also cost money. I am willing to pay money for qualified but not for false diagnostics and the things that do not help the conditions. The vet kept saying that my pet was disturbed because of seeing dogs around. Well, I took him to three other clinics withing next few days. He saw several dogs in each of them and had no reaction to them. I feel like the vet was creating unnecessary waives in the air to distract my attention from what was significant. Well, 5 hours and $900+ all went down the drain because the vet most certainly had no experience to deal with the situation. I ultimately had to go to another ER and get my pet diagnosed using proper equipment. Another disturbing issue is that there was only one vet in the clinic. How can VEG operate efficiently given the volume of pets coming in? And what if the vet needs another opinion from a colleague? It would be unreasonable to assume that one vet knows it all. VEG is not the right place to take your pet for an internal disorder. In my opinion VEG vet does not quite know what they are doing. Yet they charge you for no help and lack of experience. read more
