My family did a private party for 7 people here in December. I really enjoyed the class! Most of us were first-timers. The instructor got a station set up for each of us, and then we were led through the different steps of making our own bowl. She walked around and gave us guidance when needed. When we messed up, she stepped in to help us fix the problem. Aprons are provided, but you'll want to wear old/crummy clothes anyway because there's nothing to protect your pants or your sleeves.. There were a lot of options in this basic beginner class. Bowls could be flat, taller, round, heart-shaped, scallop-edged, etc. Lastly, we picked the color(s) that we wanted our bowls to be. There was even the option to hand-paint the bowls. We didn't get to take our bowls home right away because they needed to go through the kiln twice, I think. The wait time before we get our bowls back should end up being around 3-5 weeks I believe. There is a very cute and friendly little dog freely roaming around the studio. I reached out to inquire about a beginner pottery class and had a few questions before booking. Despite multiple attempts, I wasn't able to reach anyone by phone, so I left a voicemail with my question and call-back number. I later received a text message from Michelle, but instead of answering my question, she repeatedly asked who I was. When I followed up, she assumed I was a bot and blocked me. Strange because her texts seemed more bot-like than my own...and she got my number from a voicemail that I left? Anyway since the number matched the one listed on their website, this was both surprising and unprofessional. I was interested in signing up, but the lack of phone availability and how my inquiry was handled left me with a poor impression. read more

I coordinated a work team building activity at Potter's Place and couldn't be more happy with the turn out. It's a challenge to find fresh and new ideas to do with colleagues. I love this place. I've been going here for over two years now. I have always loved pottery, and decided to try making my own instead of buying someone else's. Karen is a remarkable teacher of of both wheel throwing and hand building. I have turned out to enjoy the hand building techniques of pottery. Karen challenges all of us to improve our skills. Each week when I walk in she wants to know if I want a challenge. I usually fall for that and end up with something that shocks me!!! Not only does Karen teach the creating process of pottery, she also teaches us about the glazing process, which there's so much more to it than I ever realized. Potters place is great for taking lessons, studio time or one time wheel. Everyone there is friendly and we all help each other. Karen offers a wide range of glazes for us to use or we can purchase or own. She almost always had two kilns running which is like Christmas time when opened. Love Potters Place. I was new to Houston and tried out this place with a friend of mine. I absolutely loved the atmosphere. Jessica, our instructor, was incredible. She was attentive and informative. She helped us make some beautiful pieces the first time around (see attached photos). I loved the place so much, that i joined their weekly classes and have been going to class for almost a year. I have found a a great sense of community and support form other studio members and Jessica. They have helped me feel welcome to Houston and i have made great friends. I love potters place. I took ceramics in college and loved it. After graduating I moved to Houston with my now husband for jobs. I had felt lonely and bored and all I ever wanted to do was throw, especially since it had been a year and a half since I had last been able to, and let me tell you it is addicting! My husband googled to see if there was anything similar to what I described that I wanted, a studio where I could use a wheel and kiln and do what I wanted and not be required to do only class projects like I had to do in college. He found this place after just a minute or two and we went to go check it out. When we got there Jessica showed us around and explained how the classes there worked and recommended I go that route after I described to her what I wanted. I started the next week and could not be happier! I love the atmosphere of the studio and the sense of community. The people in my class are wonderful and always celebrate the things going on in each other's lives. I have been going for almost a year and am sad on weeks I have to miss, and I spend the whole work week just waiting for Saturday to come around so I can go to class. I have honestly never met such a warm and welcoming group of people, they are my family. I have even recommended the one time wheel classes that Jessica does to a coworker and her mother and they absolutely loved it! When my mom came in town to visit I set one up for her as well and she had such a good time! And her bowl turned out beautifully with the expertise of Jessica. My mother was amazed with her talent and would love to do it again next time she is in town. I have been attending classes at Potters' Place for 5 years. It started as a curious hobby but quickly became one of my favorite weekly activities. Karen and Jessica, the studio teachers, are patient, fun, and exceptional at what they do. Both are successful potters who put out work that consistently inspire me. 1 star is too high a rating for this place- Completely Unreliable! Rude, unprofessional, and, from what i've seen, the owner, Karen, is totally ok with her employees emotional and temperamental outbursts. I had paid a deposit for my husband and I to try this out and, before confirming the booking, asked about their rescheduling policy. I was told that rescheduling is ok as long as I do so a couple of hours before our appointment time. However, when I called to reschedule ( a day before), I spoke with Jessica (apparently the manager of the one time wheel), who was rude and reprimanded me for not giving her more notice. I told her that someone in The Potter's Place told me i can reschedule up to 2 hours before my scheduled time. She said that I was mislead and ended the call. My birthday was coming up and so I decided to give them one more try. Truth is, the idea of working with the clay sounded really fun and I was excited to bring my family along. I called and Jessica answered again. This time however, she was polite and said that, where she doesn't generally book on Sundays (they are closed that day) that she would schedule us in. Great, I thought, she's trying to make up for her unprofessionalism the last time we spoke. I asked Jessica what time we can come in and she said we can have a starting time anywhere from 12-2. I told Jessica that I would need to coordinate with my family (all 9 of us) and they, in turn, will need to find babysitters and take off work (two of my brothers in law are physicians and they would need to make sure they aren't on call). On the following Tuesday, one day BEFORE my deadline to confirm scheduling, I called Jessica who told me that she can't take us in. I explained how she had given me her word and all the trouble my family and I went through and, instead of trying to rectify the situation, she called me "snippy" and said that she's not going to do it! Next, I spoke with the owner, Karen, who said that she'll need to speak with Jessica. I told Karen that, since Jessica will be the only one in, I was afraid that she'll sabotage our experience. Karen agreed. wow! what a business where the owner has no control of the emotional outbursts of her staff. Ultimately, I cancelled it and was happy to have found out early on how crazy this place is run rather then later when my whole family was there. Sooo glad I didn't suggest for my director to hold our departmental team building session there- that would have been embarrassing. read more

I came here for the first time with a girlfriend today. We had so much fun. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. The instructor, Jessica walked us through everything. I was looking for something new to do and this was definitely it. It is messy so don't wear your nicest clothes. With the instructors help it was fairly simple and we both managed to make really nice bowls. I came home and told my husband all about it. He is ready to try his hand at the wheel. I am a BIG fan of Potters Place, working with clay had been on my bucket list for some time. A friend brought me for a one time class. Our instructor Jessica was amazing, gave time and attention to all four of us and I went home with a beautiful functional piece. I was hooked, that was last year and I have been a regular attendee to Thursday evening class. I have also brought a group of ladies for a one time Saturday class. It was great, Jessica again was our instructor, we all got great attention, the ladies loved the class and went home with a beautiful piece. I am working on a family get together here with my girls and hope to make that a reality soon. It is a great craft, in a great studio with attention by the instructors and suggestions for ideas to do, that is the hardest for me I think, coming up with my next piece. I would highly recommend Potters Place and Jessica. I have seen her work with 8 people at a time, with kids and with those with special needs.
