Finally got a chance to dine at Poulet Bleu after a month of anticipation. The atmosphere inside is very welcoming and makes you feel like you flew across the pond and walked into a nice and cozy French restaurant. The highlight for me was being able to see into the kitchen and watching the chefs masterfully plate all the dishes. I ordered the French Onion Soup as my main dish, it's definitely filling enough to be a standalone entree despite falling under the "small plates" section. The soup was some of the best I've ever had, incredibly rich and sweet from the carmelized onions and cheese, and filling enough with the braised oxtail and baguette pieces smothered in cheese. Would definitely come back over and over for this alone. For dessert, we ordered the the chocolate souffle and the bignets. The souffle was incredibly light and airy, and the assortment of sauces that come with it are a very nice touch. The banana ice cream that comes with it provides a great temperature contrast to the piping hot souflee as well. The bignets were as light as pillows and the vanilla bean cream that comes with them is delicious as well. Lastly, the service was absolutely impeccable, our waitress was more than happy to offer us her drink recommendations and was very attentive throughout our dinner - I don't think my water glass was ever more than half empty before being topped up. Poulet bleu never ever disappoints. The atmosphere is absolutely incredible and unlike anything else in Pittsburgh. There are so many incredible food options so definitely come hungry! I ordered the bistro burger which came with pomme frites (a MUST), aligot potatoes, a small French press of decaf coffee and a soufflé. The burger cooked medium was perfection and the frites were so flavorful I didn't even need the ketchup! The aligot potatoes are perfect for sharing between the table because there is a plentiful amount and they are so decadent. I ended my meal with the soufflé and a French press of decaf coffee. The soufflé is truly incredible especially when you add in the vanilla bean ice cream and delicious little toppings. You will be paying a little more than a typical dining experience in Pittsburgh but OH MY is it worth it. The front patio, high top seating at the chef station, upstairs seating, and deck seating is all perfect. You could go here over and over and find something new that you love every single time whether it is food, drinks, or ambiance. A must visit restaurant. read more

When Richard DeShantz opens a new restaurant I'm not going to sleep on it. I love how all of his restaurants are so different, but yet they all bring their A game. I would say this was my first official French experience and I went all in. There was a group of 4 of us that had reservations for a Tuesday night. We made these reservations probably 2.5 weeks in advance. *Warning* it is not a place for large parties. Let's address the atmosphere! The outdoor patio screams European bistro. The interior is clean and fresh with the dusty blue and white accents. I started with the escargot. That was my first time trying it so it felt like a no brainer to order it from a restaurant that specializes in French cuisine. The snails were pretty big and you get 6 on the plate with 2 slices of toasted baguette. Make sure to make use of the butter, garlic and herb mixture it's perfect for dipping the snails and bread. I haven't experienced escargot elsewhere but I felt like this was prepared to perfection. It wasn't too chewy which was what I was afraid of. A friend ordered the foie gras torchon and I was a little nervous to try it. The first time I ever tried seared foie gras at a downtown restaurant was a terrible experience. But Poulet Bleu changed my mind all together about foie gras. I highly recommend this dish! For my entree I ordered the French onion soup and let me just say this was the BEST French onion soup I have ever had. The oxtail bone broth and beef pieces in the soup made it very hearty and kicked it up 10 notches. The gruyere cheese was melted perfectly. I will warn you that it is a very large bowl. I did take some of mine home because I couldn't finish it and well I knew I couldn't leave without trying the desserts. Yes, you heard me right desserts. We shared 3 different desserts, the clafoutis, beignets and the chocolate soufflé. The chocolate soufflé was pretty rich in taste, but was light and fluffy. I'm not a big chocolate cake person, but if you love chocolate then I would say you should probably try this. The beignets were very soft and dusted with lots of powdered sugar and a cream glaze! The star of the show was definitely the clafoutis. Anytime I have ever tried clafoutis it was cold or room temperature. They serve this warm topped with blackberries and it melts in your mouth. If you want to taste delicious food and have a great dining experience make sure to make a reservation at Poulet Bleu or any of the DeShantz restaurants ASAP! read more

Poulet Bleu which is French for "blue chicken" is the latest addition to fine dining in the Lawrenceville area. Sharing the same house number as the soon to be reopened Morcilla, Poulet Bleu is an impeccable establishment that is part of the Richard DeShantz restaurant group. This same group runs Meat and Potatoes downtown along with the dining at the CLO Cabaret where I just was the other night and saw they had changed their menu. Reservations are strongly recommended because this place fills up fast but if you forget to do so then bar seating is available with the same menu. Dress is business casual. What's neat is they have an open kitchen and depending upon your vantage point you can actually "see" them prepare your meal. If you are fortunate to get the "chef's table" then the kitchen is right in front of you. I got there when it opened at 5. I was warmly greeted and they offered to take my coat. The menu is identical to what is online. I was a little disappointed they had removed skate from the menu because I haven't had skate since I was in NY a few years back. I was looking at the French Onion soup which runs $15.00. My waiter explained to me that the soup is a meal in itself since it contains actual oxtail meat in it. The croutons come from La Gourmandine down the street. I ordered that and was debating about getting the burger and fries to go with it. I got the soup and believe me it was very filling. He was right! This was one of the best French Onion soups I ever had! I was debating afterwards whether to go with the hamburger which I actually learned comes with two patties and fries or try out tonight's rabbit special. Since I wanted dessert I opted instead for the roasted carrots. That comes with fromage blanc, toasted hazelnuts, brown butter, and dill. As I was ordering that my waiter asked me if I wanted the chocolate souffle for dessert since it takes 30 minutes to prepare and he could get that started for me while I was waiting for my carrots. The souffle is made for two people and I was disappointed that I couldn't just eat half and take the rest home with me since it wouldn't keep. I suggested that they consider making that dessert into a single portion and he said he would pass along the word. Meantime, I got my carrots and they were melt in your mouth good! I wasn't overly impressed with the fromage blanc but by the time I was through with the carrots I really didn't think I could handle dessert! I decided to try something anyway. I passed on my usual cream brulee so that I could try something different. I ordered the clafloutis which is blackberry custard, whipped creme fraiche, and lime. This thing was so big I was amazed at the fact I could even finish it. Believe me it did not disappoint! It was one of my waiter's recommendations. They play French music in the background to help promote the feel of being in a French restaurant. I was chatting with folks at a nearby table as I ate and learned how much they enjoyed the beef tartare and tossed salad. Your check comes with a wrapped caramel and although I noticed I was slightly overcharged on my bill, my waiter was quick to remedy that. This place is fairly pricey and parking on Butler St is limited since they are converting one of the pay lots that used to be here. They have an extensive wine list along with pairing for various meals and desserts. They also serve cocktails as well as fine wines and champagnes straight from the bottle. I've been here only a couple of times but twice is enough to know that it's easily a favorite. The service is excellent, the design is swoon worthy and the food is incredibly good. It's not just the the food is prepared perfectly but the quality of the food is what does it for me. Since the pandemic hit I've wanted to support this restaurant group so we bought meat from their curbside pickup. We aren't eat steak at home Peter we are it two nights in a row because the quality of the meat was so on point. I've had the mussels and the lobster spaghetti as appetizers and both were delicious. The lobster spaghetti had such a unique flavor to it that it's almost like you should forget the word "spaghetti" because what you taste is so different than what your mind expects. It's really very cool. I love mussels so they were excellent. The broth was really good and kind of subtle in the way it didn't steal the spotlight from the mussels themselves as much as a nice complement to the grilled bread served with them. The Brussels sprouts were off the hook with some kind of bacon jam that was so tasty that we were taking turns putting more on our plates and nothing was left by the time we were done. We also had the frisée salad, which I declined splitting but then after a taste I finished the other half. This is not your typical boring salad that you eat just for the health factor. It was spectacular. I find salads to be boring as shit but I will absolutely get this one every visit when I return. Steak with pinned frites, steak cooked perfectly and those skinny French fries are so good and so fun to eat. My husband got the trout and he loved every bit of it. Everyone should order the chocolate soufflé once for the fun of it. The "condiments" which accompany it are really fun to add to the soufflé, too. I'm not a big chocolate person so it was fun to have but I'll likely go for different desserts next time just because of personal preferences. I can't wait to go back after life's pause. I enjoyed my experience here. The service and staff are all really courteous and the ambiance and layout is a huge plus. We ordered fries, beef tartare, salmon roe dip and chips, roasted carrots, gnocchi, beef Bourguignon, and chocolate soufflé. They use beef tallow to deep fry their fries and chips so they taste really good. I highly recommend trying their deep fried items! Everything was pretty good, but I will say the combination of things we ordered was rather heavy so our stomachs were a little overwhelmed if you know what I mean--but it was highly worth it. We ordered some wine as well as the mulled wine. The mulled wine was really great. Heartwarming in fact! The chocolate soufflé was served with fresh made banana ice cream, and I'm not usually a dessert person but that was phenomenal. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Ice cream and soufflé weren't too sweet either. I'm not sure what they used in the aioli of their beef tartare, but it tasted a little too much like mayonnaise in my opinion. I dislike when things taste strongly of mayo because it can overpower the rest of the dish. French onion soup was the best I have had. When you come, you need to save room for the chocolate soufflé. It is a must. For only 16 dollars, you get a massive soufflé with a side of ice cream and 5 other sauces/toppings. It is meant for 2 people but could have easily fed a family especially after indulging in terrific cuisine. Also suggest the cognac pepper sauce if you get the filet. What an incredible culinary experience. From the Richard DeSchantz Restaurant group, another amazing intelligent concept, this time a French bistro that is definitely to crave any of your sensual indulgences. The ambience is beyond perfection and creativity from this well thought out and planned restaurant. The French porcelain tile floor to the marble bar tops with elegant Restoration Hardware brass lighting, The ambience sets the tone from the moment you walk in. Fresh cut flowers create the ambience and scent of atmosphere on top of the indulging butter, garlic and savory herbs through out the air. I highly recommend getting several appetizers to try. The beef tartare especially is one of tenderness to appreciate, the mussels, and if you're really daring, the froie gras is impeccable and delicate paired with pears and onion bulbs. As a main course we had the skate and wagyu steak. Again more delicacies that fulfill the aroma and palate of the delicate meat sensory. Accompanied by the carrots and potatoes with Guyare cheese was so amazing, that you didn't want to stop eating it. Be prepared to get reservations as this will most likely become a sought after restaurant destination not only for those in Pittsburgh but those traveling and tourism through our neighborhoods. Poulet Bleu is an awesome, French bistro dining experience. As soon as my wife and I walked in, we felt like we had entered an escape hatch and landed in Paris. The decor is very much what we encountered in France. The service was great! Damian (pronounced Damon), has been with the DeShantz group for a few years, and he knows the menu. The food was great! We started with a melted cheese appetizer, and while the cheese was succulent and a little sweet (from locally sourced honey), the bread was the show-stopper. They get their bread from La Gourmandine, a local, authentic French bakery with a couple of locations in the Pittsburgh area. The French Onion Soup was outstanding. The broth was thick and naturally sweet from the caramelized onions. The oxtail broth was soooo rich, and even had some pieces of slowly braised oxtail meat in the broth. Yummy! Of course, the cheese that topped this masterpiece was funky and sharp. Soooo good! My wife and I split the steak and frites, choosing the NY Strip. It was perfectly cooked. I would recommend that you get the house sauce, which was so flavorful (don't worry that it has puréed chicken livers in it, the sauce is not the slightest bit livery in texture or flavor--it is a deep, umami bomb!). Our steak was topped with fois gras, which was perfectly seared. If you have never had fois, do yourself a favor and order it (for a mere $13 extra) with your steak. Fois will change your life. Needless, to say, this place has quickly become our new favorite in Pittsburgh. Richard DeShantz triumphs again. His Beard nomination for the best restaurant group is well deserved. read more

This is an easy five stars. After reading a review of Poulet Bleu in a Pittsburgh food blog, I knew that we had to check it out! Making a reservation online was easy, though if you want to sit at the bar, call in and make the request. The service here equals any that I've had at any of Pittsburgh's nicest restaurants. Better than at Altius. Better than at Eleven. On par with the Twisted Frenchman. We were well cared for even though it was dinner rush on Friday night. We loved our food. We started with the baguette and the garlic white wine mussels. Honesty, ordering the baguette was a bit excessive, but I couldn't help myself--surely judging a French restaurant should include a judgement of the baguette, non? Both were excellent. Our entrees were great, but the real star of the night was the chocolate soufflé. Normally for dessert at home, I'd have a small scoop of ice cream. This colossal confection was served with not only two generous scoops of banana ice cream but dipping sauces and toppings galore! We were stuffed by the time we finished, but it was worth every glorious calorie. In summary: when my girlfriend got an award and asked me where she'd could treat me with the cash, Poulet Bleu was the only place that came to mind! read more

My boyfriend and I took my mother to dinner for her birthday and the food and service were amazing. Steak, duck, chicken all prepared exquisitely! My boyfriend thinks he's a food critic and could not stop ranting and raving about his canard orange dish! My mother turned 69 and it was a sweet and enjoyable evening l; they even presented her with beingets and a candle. The staff never allowed our glasses to go empty, they also promptly cleared and sanitized the table between every course. Poulet Bleu is such a gem. I was so excited to try this, but wanted to keep expectations low just in case. I know that in the time of covid restaurants are suffering, so I went in guarded. This place exceeded my expectations. It was soooo good. The decor and vibe was awesome (our seats were a little close to others, but I get that it needs to be done in spaces like theirs). Our server was super friendly, helpful, and so knowledgeable about the menu. Their drink menu was great, and the food was incredible. As most fine dining restaurants are, it is pricey so if you are one to turn away from a higher price tag, save it for a special occasion. I wouldn't skip it though, it is worth checking out, even for a drink and snack. read more

We waited months for a weekend reservation here and I'm so disappointed because I chose wrong. I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi ($24). It's described on the menu like this: Ricotta Gnocchi-- eggplant, zucchini, corn, basil, feta. I'm not sure what I thought I was getting but this is essentially gnocchi and veggies covered in basil pesto. Basil based sauce is great though, right? Not in this case. There was just SO MUCH sauce. It was almost like a soup. And the very strong basil flavor completely overpowered everything else in the dish. My husband tried it as well (because I thought I was being dramatic) and he described it as "intense in a bad way" which is a perfect description. I took 5 baby bites and I just couldn't do it anymore. There are things to like about this place: The bread was great and so were the salads. The interior is absolutely beautiful with a French country but also industrial vibe, somehow? Service was good and I hear dessert is good too. We'll try again. read more

We were very much looking forward to our Saturday evening reservation (that it seemed like we booked forever ago!). We decided to go the small plates route, so we could enjoy a variety of menu options. We started with the French onion soup. We try French onion soup nearly everywhere it's on the menu. Capital Grille is our favorite. For us, it's all about the cheese and broth. This soup definitely lived up to the hype. The oxtail is an excellent addition. It's basically a meal in itself! While it's not #1 on our list; it's definitely holding steady as a solid second. We also had the mussels and oysters Rockefeller. I'm not much into oysters, but this plate was absolutely delicious! Could have easily had a second. We also split the frites. How could fries be so wonderful? I don't know. But they were and we devoured the entire basket. For dessert, we tried the Grand Marnier soufflé. The chocolate soufflé is what the restaurant is known for, but the Grand Marnier was a special "off menu" offering. Hands down THE BEST soufflé if ever had. It was served with a side of cranberries and a Grand Marnier save. It wasn't dense. Every bite was a bit of heaven. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the open kitchen concept. The only complaint was that the tables were nearly on top of each other. I was interested to try this place after visiting most of the other Deshantz restaurants and so a group of 4 of us tried it last weekend. The night didn't really start off on the right foot as when our server arrived they informed the fryer was down and fries would not be available / substituted with some other potatoes from the menu. While I get it, it kinda dampened my enthusiasm for the main course as my intention was to get steak / fries and that was not going to happen. Ordered apps (pate, tartare, duck confit) - all were delicious and would order all of them again without question. The french onion soup was next and though it was very good, I think the price is a little crazy for what it is - oh well. As fries were out, I decided to order the Chicken Forestiere which was pretty good also. We finished the meal with the Salted Caramel Souffle which was a let down - really didn't think it had a great flavor or much flavor at all honestly. Drinks were all good and so were the wine options we had so overall we were happy with those. Overall the service was decent, but not what I would expect for someplace of this caliber - nothing to to call out but just meh. The atmosphere was nice and unique in Pittsburgh. After this experience and visiting most of the other Deshantz finer dining locations, I feel like the they are over hyped or the type of places you go to post on social media. For the cost, I want the food / service to be amazing to mind blowing and I feel it not as good as it should be. Maybe the experience is what some people want - not me. read more

First timer at Poulet Bleu ! We stepped into a modern yet cozy atmosphere. The kitchen is open and you can watch the chefs prepare the food. We had reservations and were seated immediately. Our server was friendly and even gave us champagne on the house since my Fiancé and I were celebrating our engagement! We started off with a cheese plate it was very tasty but our favorite part was the lavender honey. I also had the French onion soup, it was amazing! For our entrées we both ordered the same thing a filet mignon with fries in the peppercorn sauce, also a side of the cheese to dip for fries. Entrées were very good and prepared perfectly! Next time we go back, I will try the truffle risotto. For dessert we ordered a chocolate soufflé it does take 20 to 30 minutes to prepare. It was good but it was not our favorite, we only took a couple bites each. We would not order it again. Next time we will order the beignets. We will return and try some other options. read more

This is easily one of the most authentic French restaurants in Pittsburgh. When I came for dinner, we had the baguette and sea salt, pommes frittes (French fries), and Escargot as appetizers. All three were incredible. I especially recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and trying the Escargot if you've never had snails. They were served with warm bread in a garlic butter sauce. For dinner, I had the gnocchi and ordered extra sauce with it, which I thought was fantastic. My friends had a steak, the chicken, and the trout, and they all enjoyed their meals as well. For dessert, we had the soufflé and the creme brûlée. The soufflé came with multiple sauces and ice cream, and the creme brûlée had berries with it. Both were fantastic! Absolutely love the ambience and everyone who works there is friendly and welcoming. They've created domes for dining outside on the upstairs and downstairs patios which are just awesome so you can be with your covid crew (friends, family etc) while enjoying a delicious meal! They currently also have indoor dining as well with social distancing. I'm of the vegan variety and while I knew I would probably just get the fries, the chef was very nice and worked out using some of the sides for other dishes to create this delicious glazed carrot, mushroom lentil and Brussel sprout dish. (there will be cross contamination if you have dairy allergies etc so I wouldn't expect this to be often but it was truly nice of them to accommodate me). For all the non vegans of the world, everything here was described by my friends as super tasty. The pomme frites come with dipping sauces besides your run of the mill ketchup; The gnocchi have delicious oyster mushrooms mixed in. No one was disappointed at our table. And then the chocolate souffle which needs to be ordered a little ahead of time because it comes out piping hot with chocolate to drizzle on top as well as vanilla ice cream. I have never posted a review of anything but had to make an exception for this place. I've never been more impressed than by the service provided by Lance from the Deshanz restaurant group. He, and everyone we met, made it clear that customer service is Priority 1, 2, and 3 for these folks. We were served on the beautiful Poulet Bleu covered patio on a very busy evening and were treated like we were their only diners. The menu, staff, food and drinks were all outstanding. Well done. When I heard Richard DeShantz opened a new French restaurant, I have to say I wasn't as excited as I usually am. I never really had much french food so I didn't know what to expect and wasn't really in a rush to make a reservation months in advance. After a recent visit to Vegas I had the opportunity to try Mon Ami Gabi and became a little more aware of what French food consisted of. Naturally I had to get back and check out Poulet Bleu. The place itself is absolutely adorable! This restaurant group always ceases to amaze me with how they decorate each individual restaurant to go along with the theme. I have to say this is probably my favorite out of all of them. It's as if you walk off the streets of Pittsburgh and into France. The little patio out front is beautiful. Food wise I ended up going with the steak frites. I debated getting a few of the small plates but without sharing it felt like too much for just 1 person. Plus who doesn't love streak frites?! The dish was delicious but my only real complaint was how the meat was cooked. Don't get me wrong I hate my meat cooked fully. At that point it's so far gone it doesn't even taste the same. However, this was a little too rare for my liking. I would have preferred that I was asked how I wanted it prepared so I could have gotten medium rather than medium rare/rare. Of course my friend and I had to get the shuffle for dessert. Neither of us are huge desserts people but the soufflé looked so good that I had to have it. It came out piping hot with 4 sauces that could be drizzled over your soufflé. For not liking desserts much I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. Amazing! Visiting town for a third time and wanted to add a new spot of memorable dining experiences. This one exceeded my expectations on every front. Party of 2 with no reservation. Offered bar seating and as the food gods would have it a reservation cancelled. Service was superb! Never had to ask for anything. Started with the French onion soup with oxtails. Made my eyes roll to the back of my head. By far, the best ever! Dinner consisted of the NY strip medium with bernaise and frites. The sauce was light, and creamy if that makes sense. The steak was fired just right. My partner had the Spaghetti and Lobster as an entree. The soup is larger than expected so I would go easy or share because I just didn't have any room left for dessert. They were serving a chocolate soufflé for 2 which you need to order in advance, but we were stuffed. The ambience is great and you really feel like you had the treat of a lifetime. we were told poulet bleu was "the" place for french food. we were excited to go as we LOVE french food! (look at my bio!) after our month of waiting for our reservation, the day finally arrived! we had breakfast, & then waited for our meal to go crazy on! we were taken to our seats, which were upstairs & out on the deck. it was a beautiful night. unfortunately, the sun was blazing in our eyes, & we hadn't brought our "shades". out waiter was able to move us to a point where he could put an umbrella up for us. aaahhh, much better! we asked the waiter for his idea of wine we would like. it was excellant! charbonniere vacqueryas. thank you! tom got the escargot, me the duck confit for our 1st course. he loved his. i tried some. i've only had preparations made with tomato, this was lemon. eh. the duck was wonderful. tho i thought it could have been rendered a bit more. we ordered the chateau briand for dinner, & the souffle for dessert. i mean, we're in a french restaurant here! the meat was magnificent! the marrow was again cold! this is the 2nd restaurant to give us cold marrow! it's not so good! LOVED the frites! the souffle, impressive. hmm, really good, not great. for the money, i want great! read more

One of our favorite spots in Pittsburgh! Perfect for special occasions (they gave us free beignets for our anniversary) or happy hour cocktails & bites. In particular I recommend the carrots (creme fraiche is killer) and the gnocchi, though meat eaters may prefer the burger or the French onion soup. read more

Poulet Bleu has been our go-to for birthday celebrations the last three years! I have never not ordered the mussels, and each time it has been a different (and always delicious) sauce. We also always order the soufflé and the duck entree. I love that they switch up the menu seasonally. The atmosphere is unique in each dining space and the staff, even through the pandemic have been welcoming! Highly recommend for their food, drinks and atmosphere for celebrating!! read more

Took my mom here for her birthday and we both had a great time. I wanted to splurge a bit so we ended up ordering 5-6 dishes to share. I read that the carrots were a must order side but personally I thought they were underwhelming. My favorite dishes had to be the beef tartare and the lobster mac. Those dishes can't be missed. read more
