Students attend weekly meetings that include Hot Words (usually SAT prep), a family style dinner, a take home lesson, and tutoring by college students or other volunteers. RC also sends eligible students to UCSD over the summer to take courses for college credit, to a week-long summer camp to bond with other students, and helps seniors complete their college & scholarship applications... did I mention this is all for free? The students who I've met here are some of the most intelligent, friendly, and resilient high schoolers I know, and everyone on staff is wonderful. If you live in San Diego and you have a couple of free hours every week, definitely DEFINITELY check out this organization! Reality Changers is a non-profit that helps 8th-12th grade students from all over San Diego be the…read morefirst in their families to go to college. Over the years, Reality Changers has proven that it is much more than a non-profit program. I have volunteered as a tutor and mentor since Spring of 2008 (back when I was still a student at UCSD) and it has been extremely rewarding seeing the students grow and mature into responsible citizens and adults. The weekly program consists of S.A.T. test preparation, an insightful lesson, a delicious homemade dinner (which is five stars for sure! not every volunteer gig you do feeds you!), and then 1.5 hours of study time. During this time, you are paired up with a small group of students which makes it easier to connect with the students. Reality Changers has even had inspiring guest speakers such as politicians, leaders in the San Diego community, and university officials. With the help of the supportive and encouraging staff and volunteers, these inner-city youth from San Diego become the first in their families to attend a four-year university.. and not only do they defy all statistics against them to get ACCEPTED, these students earn scholarships to go to schools such as Duke, Harvard, Dartmouth, USC, UCLA, and more. This truly shows how Reality Changers is more than just a program that helps high school students. It gives teens who never might have had the chance an opportunity of a lifetime and I am happy and blessed to be a part of it. It is amazing what a few hours a week can do to transform a student's life. This organization is unlike place I've ever volunteered at because they really make everyone who is a part of the program - whether you're a tutor, a parent, a volunteer, or a student feel like part of the RC Family. Also, tutors come from very diverse backgrounds - there are many college students (from UCSD, SDSU, PLNU, etc), professionals from the community, retired adults, and more who are all invested in helping inner city students from San Diego be the first in their families to go to college.

The group is diverse, which includes engineers, logisticians, retirees, contractors, active military, and civilians. However, at Wordmaster Toastmasters, everyone is created equal, and we respect each other despite differences. I didn't work there and didn't know what the heck they do outside of the club, but I still joined! There will always be helpful guidance. The building is beautiful, very spacious and a perfect place to hold community forums. The Foundation is conveniently located right in the middle of Liberty Station, at the corner of Roosevelt and Historic Decatur. There is a large parking lot directly across the street and the big Liberty Station Von's is right around the corner, if you need any last minute refreshments. Inside, the San Diego Foundation is clean, light and airy. The meeting room had excellent seating, good clear vantage points from all angles, and even the airplanes landing and taking off from nearby San Diego International Airport didn't seem to cause too much noise interference. I really like what the San Diego Foundation stands for and appreciate all the good work it does in the community. Now I can honestly say that the Foundation also has an awesome home and is a great place to host community-related forums.

They helped with sponsorship for our educational programs in poor schools and our hospital programs for kids with cancer. I have to admit that there help really made a difference and that we couldn't have done the projects without them and their help really came at an opportune time. I think what stands out to me about Activated Ministries is that they really have a vision, a vision for helping others and helping volunteers who want to help others. They live that vision, our professional, have good values and ethics, and it's really inspiring. I'm sure I'll be working closely with them in the future.

I actually found about this organization at San Diego Anime Con 2023. The people who ran the table…read moreseemed nice enough. And I've always wanted to do something with being a mentor. I applied and jumped through all the hoops in early 2023 and someone dropped the ball in late 2024 and I think my application fell through the cracks when the admin in charge of my case left this organization and wrote a mass email something along the lines "it's my last day, so-and-so is taking over. Reach out to them, bye". I did the whole live scan, application forms, background check, references, and interview and got approved and nothing. I was just waiting to be paired up with a little, the admin told me it should take 3-6 months, but more on the 6 month side. I think it was 9 months until they dropped the ball in late 2024. All my references gots reviewed and that takes the longest. I'm done and I won't waste my time with an chapter of a major organation that doesn't give a damn about people trying to pair mentors up. I feel really sorry for the littles that are waiting to be paired up when this chapter is dropping the ball so hard. I was told not to reach out until 6 months and yes, I got that email around that time or longer. No one reached out and made effort to say "hello". Or even check in. To be honest, why should I reach out after all the running around and taking a few hours to apply to be a Big? I've volunteered at quite a few different places and just like a job, if you aren't valued then why be there? Same goes with this place. Volunteers are a valuable resource because they are doing this for FREE and have passion! I'm not waste my free time with someone who doesn't respect my effort of running around for all their requirements. The live scan was the biggest pain, finding parking to get your fingers scanned and the scan takes 30 minutes if it's not screwed up in the process. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for it. Good luck to all the Parents, Littles, and Bigs [current & trying to be matched]. I can see why there's over 200 littles needed to be matched.

My opinion they totally discriminate against age and make "older" people wait, kids wait as long as a year while they hope some younger (mostly guys) will join. Asking for age preference is discrimination pure and simple. They should match according to interests and if a Little want's to reject the match because of age, that kid should wait a year. Conversely and totally hypocritically, get ready to pick your "pronouns" when applying for this program (he/she/they, etc.) It's on the application (not optional). So sad :(
