No Powder Mill and no ledges Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge has a cool, if somewhat misleading name. There is no Powder Mill and virtually no ledges or rocks. Apparently the powder mill was quite a distance from here and any ledges that were in the area are now long gone. Just lots of trees, some gentle hills, little critters and lots of quiet. This is property owned and maintained by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island so the trails are well marked and in great shape. Lots of people use this refuge for a nice, easy walk with kids or as a place to hike in snowy or bad weather when other trails become too dangerous. It does have some nice broadwalks and lots of ancient stone walls that meander throughout the woods. None of the hiking in the refuge is difficult or challenging and the total distance of the trails isn't very long. No great geology or historic stuff to look at and besides some cool birds, not a lot of wildlife. This is more of a walk than a hike but the Audubon Society's headquarters us located right next to the trails so when you are finished with the hiking you can go into the building to check out the displays and books. An easy and gentle place that is great for people that aren't use to or can't handle the more vigorous hiking.

A pretty decent hiking spot. There are a couple different trails and some take longer than others. The blue trail has benches in a couple spots, so that's a good one to take if you need to stop and rest every once in awhile. We saw a couple of blue jays, and saw a giant female praying mantis. There were also a lot of dragonflies and a few of them landed on me and hung out for awhile. We were hoping to see more butterflies though. This seems like a good spot for families too. Most of the trails are pretty safe except for a fallen tree here and there. Today I did the orange trail and the blue trail and enjoyed them both. I didn't get to try the yellow trail, but we plan on going back next weekend to check it out.

Went here last Sunday, alone. Felt like eyes were on me the entire time. Stood on the tall clearing near the end of Orange trail & called out "Show yourself" & took some photos. What I got sent chills down my spine & I haven't slept since I found the thing in my picture! On the blue trail, there is a manmade log structure built up around the base of a tree. Upon further inspection, there is an empty toilet paper roll in there & some other old trash. Maybe there IS a man living in these woods, but it was NO MAN in my photo! The entire walk just felt very unsettling the entire way through & I won't ever go back alone!

At .8 miles (from the lot where we parked), there are two benches which offer a view of the river. There is also a lot at the other end of the trail, so the benches would be at .3 miles respectively. On the plus side, the trail is quiet and we only saw a few people. On the negative side, it's very short, it's not a loop, there are limited views in the summer, and it's not especially interesting. I wouldn't go out of my way to walk here, but if it's convenient to your locale, or your limited on time, this might be your spot!

Flat and very easy to walk on it's a nice place for a stroll along the Woonasquatucket River and then by Stillwater Pond. Even though it isn't a long walking path it has all kinds of interesting things to look at. The trail goes right under a cool highway bridge and follows the river until it becomes Stillwater Pond. The remains of several old dams are still visible as well as evidence of lots of beaver activity. It does get a it spooky in dark or foggy weather because the trail is tucked in between the river on one side and a hill with some industrial looking places on the other. On most of the trail you feel very alone and isolated. Lots of old foundations and even some abandoned and creepy buildings are still visible. They are the remains of Stillwater Village. a place now long gone. Lots of stories about people seeing strange things and hearing odd noses while walking along this path. The last time I went it was a foggy and rainy day so it was a bit spooky but of course I didn't see or hear anything unexpected. A pleasant and different sort of walking path. You get to see some cool natural sights as well as the remains of man made structures. An interesting place best visited in the light of day

It is a calming trail, that is quite woodsy and you will hear many birds including woodpeckers ! You will definitely need to keep your eye on the trail, as there are a lot of rocks and tree roots on the trail that could easily twist an ankle or worse ! There are some inclines and downgrades on this trail, there Is one treacherous section before you get to the pond, that is a steep downgrade full of rocks ! The pond does offer some nice views and the trail is easy to follow. This trail is evaluated as a beginner's trail but there are some areas that in my opinion are intermediate in difficulty. A person should be in average physical condition, to do this trail. I am almost 75 years old, in average physical condition and was able to complete this trail. Overall this is a pretty good trail!

It does not matter that it is closed, people will come anyhow and do what ever they want, good or bad, b/c there is noone to police their activities. This is a nice place when the riff raff is not there. The riff raff caught wind of it and now it's being taken over by ignorant people. Everyone has a right to enjoy the place, but we should be considerate of others and respect the natural environment. Instead, these people leave their trash. They leave hookah tips, grills, dump.out grease, dump charcoal out, they leave socks, bras, clothing, toys, empty cups, styrofoam coolers full of empty beer bottles, condoms, and fishing garbage behind. Every Monday, it's as though a bunch of ferrel animals came and shit on the place and left their smelly, disgusting mess behind. So, the downfall is that people are so ignorant. They come, they are inconsiderate, they blast their music, they drink and smoke, and basically break every rule there is. They have no regard for the wildlife. I saw a guy on his jet ski run into a family of ducks as he was trying to show off in a no wake zone! Try fishing off the shore with that awhole around. Also, the bathrooms are not open and so they must go in the water or the woods. I find a lot of tissues on the ground at the edge of the woods. Some people take their trash and throw it in the woods down the embankments. Only uncivilized and inconsiderate people do things like that and unfortunately, they found out about Georgiaville Pond. It is a crying shame. The cops try to come often and there is a security detail that checks in there, but it doesn't matter. These low class people still manage to beat the system.

Lincoln Woods State Park is one of those places that makes you forget, at least for a little while,…read morethat you're only a few miles from Providence. I live in Kendall Estates, so Lincoln Woods is practically in my backyard, and that proximity is one of the things I appreciate most about it. You don't have to plan an elaborate day trip or spend an hour sitting in traffic to get somewhere that feels like you're actually getting away. Sometimes you just decide you want to go for a walk, head over to the park, and suddenly the noise of everything else seems a little farther away. I've walked here plenty of times, and there is something wonderfully uncomplicated about it. You can come here to exercise, wander around, spend time with the family, bring the pets, or simply find a little peace and enjoy being outside. It's the sort of place where you don't necessarily need an agenda. Sometimes a walk is enough. The lake is obviously a major part of what makes Lincoln Woods special. There are opportunities to swim during the appropriate season, and the park has plenty of space for a good old-fashioned cookout or a day outside with family and friends. Bring the kids, bring the dog, bring lunch, bring a book, or bring absolutely nothing other than yourself. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the park without feeling like you need to spend money once you arrive. What I particularly love is the contrast between Lincoln Woods and the communities surrounding it. Rhode Island is small enough that you can be in the middle of a developed area one minute and surrounded by woods, water, and open space the next. Lincoln Woods gives you that feeling without requiring you to drive halfway across the state. Providence is right there. Lincoln, North Providence, Cumberland, Smithfield, and the surrounding communities are all close by, yet when you're actually inside the park, it can feel surprisingly removed from everything. It's also one of those places that changes with the seasons. The experience of being here in the warmth of summer, when people are swimming and gathering for cookouts, is completely different from walking through when the weather is cooler and the landscape becomes quieter. That's part of the appeal. You can come back over and over and still notice something different depending on the time of year, the weather, or simply your mood. And I think that's ultimately why Lincoln Woods has earned five stars from me. It isn't trying to be anything complicated. It's a beautiful state park that gives people room to breathe. In a state as densely settled as Rhode Island, having a large natural space this close to Providence is something worth appreciating. For me, it's especially convenient because I live so close, but I don't think you need to be a neighbor to appreciate what is here. If you're looking for somewhere to walk, spend time with your family, take the dog, go swimming, have a cookout, or simply get outside and enjoy some nature, Lincoln Woods is an easy recommendation. I've been fortunate to have a place like this so close to home, and I suspect I'll continue taking advantage of it for a very long time. Five stars, without hesitation.
