The different trails intersect frequently, which means you can really make a hike however long you'd like. There was a QR code to scan to get the trail map where we started our hike. Everything was well marked and well maintained. There was also a small boardwalk area to keep you out of a swampy area. Parking was a bit confusing. We parked in the Carltons Trail cul de sac which had both "parking for trail" and "no parking" signs on the same pole. We took the risk and parked because the "no parking" sign looked a little less official. The leaves had just come down from the trees, which made the path difficult to navigate at some points; we kept tripping over rocks on the path that you couldn't see. I may reserve this hike more for spring and summer for this reason!

Connor's Farm Conservation Area is by far, one of my favorite places for hiking in Rhode Island…read more Described as a hidden gem within the state, the main trailhead for this area is nestled in a nice neighborhood in Smithfield. If you are looking for a little bit of elevation, this is your place. I traipsed around here for approximately 2 miles and enjoyed every moment of it. Ponds, birdhouses, brooks, glacial rock formations, caves, overlooks, beech groves, a wild cranberry bog, stone bridges and so much more. The trails are marked by color - red, green, blue, and yellow. It is very easy to stay on trail here as everything is very well marked and their are signs at most intersections identifying where you are on the map. It is the one hike I've taken lately where the maps at the trailhead were actually stocked! This land was once part of the Connors family farm (surprise!). The trail system was built by the Boy Scouts in the 90s. My favorite view was from the top of the boulder field. Do expect some strenuous sections but its worth it! Beautiful in the spring/summer!

Maintained by the town of Lincoln, the at times tumultuous walking trail, overlooking the Wenscott Reservoir, is a nice place to take the fam or just get away if fresh air is desired. A small parking lot infrequently has more than two cars and the other folks you pass while doing your rounds have proven to be consistently friendly. Be sure to keep your fluffy friends leashed and don't forget to pick up after them (or at least guide them far enough away from the foot path, in the leaves). I am unsure where the "fitness" comes in, because nowhere on their signage does this word appear, but for as long as I can remember this is what I've called it.

Beautiful Compact Off…read morethe beaten path I stumbled upon the existence of this spot on the visitrhodeisland Instagram page, having never heard of it previously. As a family, we gave it a shot for a what-the-heck hike, and all four of us fell immediately in love. Mowry really, REALLY dials up curb appeal right off the bat. Wandering down from the road into the conservation area, you're greeted by a large rock outcropping over a pristine rushing brook, covered by a nice pedestrian bridge - combined, it's a very halcyon scene, and gorgeous. Beyond lie two short hiking trails: red is ~0.5 miles and yellow is ~0.75 miles, and they connect so you can have a short jaunt or a longer one. There's some mild elevation change, but all very manageable in sneakers - all beginner-friendly or dog-walk appropriate. A little gem nestled in north central RI, this one deserves your attention for its natural beauty and serene wall ability. Highest recommendation.

I stumbled upon it when I was househunting and it was a house for sale right next-door. I would have loved to of bought it just for this location! There are a few trails through here and they are marked so well there's no possible way you can get lost. Leads you out to a big lake. It's really neat because they're used to be a rail road that went through here and you can still see some of the stuff left behind.

Lime Rock Nature Preserve was the perfect set of trails to stretch my legs and get back into the…read moreswing of things following a recent knee surgery. The trails here are extremely well maintained, cleared of most leaves and debris (and wonderful for my recovering lower extremity). There are two trails to visit in the Preserve, Yellow and Blue, that are visibly marked with their corresponding colored blaze. Additionally, there are a number of small green and white arrow-ed signs that point the way so it would be very difficult to get lost here. There were a number of picturesque sights along my hike through the area... most notably among them, the Manton Reservoir. The Yellow Trail opens right up to a ravine with a drop off to each side with views of both the reservoir and river that runs off from it. The entirety of the trail was lined with the pretty purple Hepatica flowers that thrive in the limestone-rich soil within the preserve. (For the medical professionals out there: Hepatica is named from its leaves, which like the liver [hepatic, get it?] have 3 lobes... cool huh?) A very easy, leisurely, short hike for those who might want to enjoy the outdoors but not commit to an extensive walk in the woods. Dogs are seemingly allowed in the area as long as they are leashed. Great for children! If you are into geocaching, there are a couple in the area not far from the marked trails. The trail head is well marked with space for 3-4 cars to comfortably pull off of the road. BRING YOUR BUG SPRAY

This beach is closed b/c they can't find a lifeguard. Also, it gets closed for too much algae…read moreoccasionally. It does not matter that it is closed, people will come anyhow and do what ever they want, good or bad, b/c there is noone to police their activities. This is a nice place when the riff raff is not there. The riff raff caught wind of it and now it's being taken over by ignorant people. Everyone has a right to enjoy the place, but we should be considerate of others and respect the natural environment. Instead, these people leave their trash. They leave hookah tips, grills, dump.out grease, dump charcoal out, they leave socks, bras, clothing, toys, empty cups, styrofoam coolers full of empty beer bottles, condoms, and fishing garbage behind. Every Monday, it's as though a bunch of ferrel animals came and shit on the place and left their smelly, disgusting mess behind. So, the downfall is that people are so ignorant. They come, they are inconsiderate, they blast their music, they drink and smoke, and basically break every rule there is. They have no regard for the wildlife. I saw a guy on his jet ski run into a family of ducks as he was trying to show off in a no wake zone! Try fishing off the shore with that awhole around. Also, the bathrooms are not open and so they must go in the water or the woods. I find a lot of tissues on the ground at the edge of the woods. Some people take their trash and throw it in the woods down the embankments. Only uncivilized and inconsiderate people do things like that and unfortunately, they found out about Georgiaville Pond. It is a crying shame. The cops try to come often and there is a security detail that checks in there, but it doesn't matter. These low class people still manage to beat the system.

Lincoln Woods State Park is one of those places that makes you forget, at least for a little while,…read morethat you're only a few miles from Providence. I live in Kendall Estates, so Lincoln Woods is practically in my backyard, and that proximity is one of the things I appreciate most about it. You don't have to plan an elaborate day trip or spend an hour sitting in traffic to get somewhere that feels like you're actually getting away. Sometimes you just decide you want to go for a walk, head over to the park, and suddenly the noise of everything else seems a little farther away. I've walked here plenty of times, and there is something wonderfully uncomplicated about it. You can come here to exercise, wander around, spend time with the family, bring the pets, or simply find a little peace and enjoy being outside. It's the sort of place where you don't necessarily need an agenda. Sometimes a walk is enough. The lake is obviously a major part of what makes Lincoln Woods special. There are opportunities to swim during the appropriate season, and the park has plenty of space for a good old-fashioned cookout or a day outside with family and friends. Bring the kids, bring the dog, bring lunch, bring a book, or bring absolutely nothing other than yourself. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the park without feeling like you need to spend money once you arrive. What I particularly love is the contrast between Lincoln Woods and the communities surrounding it. Rhode Island is small enough that you can be in the middle of a developed area one minute and surrounded by woods, water, and open space the next. Lincoln Woods gives you that feeling without requiring you to drive halfway across the state. Providence is right there. Lincoln, North Providence, Cumberland, Smithfield, and the surrounding communities are all close by, yet when you're actually inside the park, it can feel surprisingly removed from everything. It's also one of those places that changes with the seasons. The experience of being here in the warmth of summer, when people are swimming and gathering for cookouts, is completely different from walking through when the weather is cooler and the landscape becomes quieter. That's part of the appeal. You can come back over and over and still notice something different depending on the time of year, the weather, or simply your mood. And I think that's ultimately why Lincoln Woods has earned five stars from me. It isn't trying to be anything complicated. It's a beautiful state park that gives people room to breathe. In a state as densely settled as Rhode Island, having a large natural space this close to Providence is something worth appreciating. For me, it's especially convenient because I live so close, but I don't think you need to be a neighbor to appreciate what is here. If you're looking for somewhere to walk, spend time with your family, take the dog, go swimming, have a cookout, or simply get outside and enjoy some nature, Lincoln Woods is an easy recommendation. I've been fortunate to have a place like this so close to home, and I suspect I'll continue taking advantage of it for a very long time. Five stars, without hesitation.

Powder Mill Ledges is a small, well-managed wildlife refuge in Smithfield, RI! I came here by…read moreaccident when I made a few wrong turns and accidentally ended up on US-44 instead of RI-146. Then I saw some signs for a wildlife refuge on the side of the highway and decided to make a spontaneous trip! The trails are well-marked. There's a series of stacked loops so you can choose exactly how much distance you want to cover. I did all 3 loops (orange, blue, and yellow) and it was only about 2 miles, taking less than an hour to cover. This is Rhode Island, where the highest point is only 810 feet, so there's barely any elevation on this hike. I think it would be appropriate for almost any age or fitness level. The trails aren't particularly set off from the road so you can see and hear traffic and stores at some points. It's not the best place to come if you want to feel totally away from civilization. That being said, it's definitely not crowded. I came here on a cold, sunny winter weekend and there were only a couple other people on the trail. I'll come here again if I want a quick hike that's a bit quieter than some of the busy spots in RI!
