Rocks water but no parking The Mowry Conservation Area is an almost 50 acre track of land that was donated by the Mowry family to the town of Smithfield. It was in the Mowry family and was worked as a farm since at least 1845. The land is lovely, especially when covered by snow. Lot of old pines and hemlocks, huge boulders, steep little hills and streams. Remains of very ancient stone walls cross the land and even rusty metal things and stone foundations from an old forge can be seen when the snow isn't covering everything. The hiking isn' difficult but can get tough when there is ice and snow on the ground because of the numerous steep little hills. Easy to slide down an icy patch into a very cold stream. Or even worse off a little cliff. The one negative is that there really isn't a parking lot and you have to park on the side of the very narrow street. Hard to imagine how the area can hold more than a few cars safely at one time and when snow is piled up on the side of the road it becomes quite dangerous. A lovely little hiking area with lots of beautiful scenery and glimpses into history. Just don't expect to find a good place to park

Lovely place to get into nature for awhile! Two marked trails (red and yellow) which make for a lovely hike on a weekend. Between the dense woods, and the bubbling water, it's a respite from the sounds of cars and city life in general. Limited parking, across the street from where the trails begin. It looks as though there are more trails being constructed across the street, but there are no maps or blazes up yet. If you stray from the marked paths, be sure to look out for poison ivy!

At .8 miles (from the lot where we parked), there are two benches which offer a view of the river. There is also a lot at the other end of the trail, so the benches would be at .3 miles respectively. On the plus side, the trail is quiet and we only saw a few people. On the negative side, it's very short, it's not a loop, there are limited views in the summer, and it's not especially interesting. I wouldn't go out of my way to walk here, but if it's convenient to your locale, or your limited on time, this might be your spot!

Flat and very easy to walk on it's a nice place for a stroll along the Woonasquatucket River and then by Stillwater Pond. Even though it isn't a long walking path it has all kinds of interesting things to look at. The trail goes right under a cool highway bridge and follows the river until it becomes Stillwater Pond. The remains of several old dams are still visible as well as evidence of lots of beaver activity. It does get a it spooky in dark or foggy weather because the trail is tucked in between the river on one side and a hill with some industrial looking places on the other. On most of the trail you feel very alone and isolated. Lots of old foundations and even some abandoned and creepy buildings are still visible. They are the remains of Stillwater Village. a place now long gone. Lots of stories about people seeing strange things and hearing odd noses while walking along this path. The last time I went it was a foggy and rainy day so it was a bit spooky but of course I didn't see or hear anything unexpected. A pleasant and different sort of walking path. You get to see some cool natural sights as well as the remains of man made structures. An interesting place best visited in the light of day

It is a calming trail, that is quite woodsy and you will hear many birds including woodpeckers ! You will definitely need to keep your eye on the trail, as there are a lot of rocks and tree roots on the trail that could easily twist an ankle or worse ! There are some inclines and downgrades on this trail, there Is one treacherous section before you get to the pond, that is a steep downgrade full of rocks ! The pond does offer some nice views and the trail is easy to follow. This trail is evaluated as a beginner's trail but there are some areas that in my opinion are intermediate in difficulty. A person should be in average physical condition, to do this trail. I am almost 75 years old, in average physical condition and was able to complete this trail. Overall this is a pretty good trail!

It does not matter that it is closed, people will come anyhow and do what ever they want, good or bad, b/c there is noone to police their activities. This is a nice place when the riff raff is not there. The riff raff caught wind of it and now it's being taken over by ignorant people. Everyone has a right to enjoy the place, but we should be considerate of others and respect the natural environment. Instead, these people leave their trash. They leave hookah tips, grills, dump.out grease, dump charcoal out, they leave socks, bras, clothing, toys, empty cups, styrofoam coolers full of empty beer bottles, condoms, and fishing garbage behind. Every Monday, it's as though a bunch of ferrel animals came and shit on the place and left their smelly, disgusting mess behind. So, the downfall is that people are so ignorant. They come, they are inconsiderate, they blast their music, they drink and smoke, and basically break every rule there is. They have no regard for the wildlife. I saw a guy on his jet ski run into a family of ducks as he was trying to show off in a no wake zone! Try fishing off the shore with that awhole around. Also, the bathrooms are not open and so they must go in the water or the woods. I find a lot of tissues on the ground at the edge of the woods. Some people take their trash and throw it in the woods down the embankments. Only uncivilized and inconsiderate people do things like that and unfortunately, they found out about Georgiaville Pond. It is a crying shame. The cops try to come often and there is a security detail that checks in there, but it doesn't matter. These low class people still manage to beat the system.

Then I saw some signs for a wildlife refuge on the side of the highway and decided to make a spontaneous trip! The trails are well-marked. There's a series of stacked loops so you can choose exactly how much distance you want to cover. I did all 3 loops (orange, blue, and yellow) and it was only about 2 miles, taking less than an hour to cover. This is Rhode Island, where the highest point is only 810 feet, so there's barely any elevation on this hike. I think it would be appropriate for almost any age or fitness level. The trails aren't particularly set off from the road so you can see and hear traffic and stores at some points. It's not the best place to come if you want to feel totally away from civilization. That being said, it's definitely not crowded. I came here on a cold, sunny winter weekend and there were only a couple other people on the trail. I'll come here again if I want a quick hike that's a bit quieter than some of the busy spots in RI!
