Chippens has always been good to my family and more importantly, my pets. We have been clients of over 10 years and have seen multiple doctors in their practice in our time there, happily stayed with them through Covid which was a challenging time for all. Our experience is always pleasant, the practice is clean and well kept, our appointments are booked easily and within reasonable time AND they do a great job of handling our fur babies. We find their prices and cost to be very reasonable as they meet the level and quality care this practice has provided to us. Last year we lost two of our babies and that was an incredibly hard time in our lives. Dr.Elliot met us with such compassion when it was needed most. We are forever grateful. As we have welcomed new furfamily members to our family this year, Dr. Guhn Knight and Dr. Fratamico have been providing such wonderful care to us on our new endeavor. Absolutely dissatisfied with my experience with Dr Elliot at chippens hill vet. Not only was I completely blind sided by the cost but not a single one of my concerns were addressed. I was not given a quote or told the cost of the exam & chiropractic adjustment until after both were completed which cost $278 alone. I did email my concerns about this with the manager to which she agreed that her staff failed at providing an estimate which was against their protocol. I requested a thyroid panel when scheduling my appointment but was never told to fast my dog, so after leaving the office (& paying $300+ for said test) I was informed that the sample wasn't adequate since he wasn't fasted therefore I would have to come back later that week to get another sample. My other main concern was my dog's recent onset raspy breathing, which the doctor barely spoke to me about & said it was laryngeal paralysis (even tho I knew it wasn't due to his symptoms & history but she wasn't receptive to hearing it). As he laid on his side in the exam room I informed her that it gets worse when laying down to which she said "that is really difficult to listen to." So I asked if it were LP what could be done for my almost 13yr old dog who has cancer to which she solely suggested surgery... offering no other supportive care. I ended up asking for a refund for the thyroid panel as I didn't plan on coming back & went to an urgent care vet who treated his breathing after thoroughly going over his symptoms & history (it was not LP). I then scheduled with another integrative vet in the area to establish a relationship and continue his chiropractic care but asked the manager for a possible partial refund for the exam (which was $150) since I was not satisfied & did not feel comfortable continuing care with Dr Elliot. She refused to offer any sort of refund stating that the doctor had offered her expertise & not everyone is a good fit for one another so she respected me seeking care elsewhere. However, I don't feel that I received any expertise unfortunately as none of my concerns were addressed. This was an extremely expensive trial & error process that has set me back with my dog's care since I now have to pay for another new patient exam at a different office. I understand that we are in COVID times, but 5-8 weeks for an initial appointment is absurd! If you have recently adopted a pet and have the expectation that you will get that pet looked at by this vet within 2 weeks of adoption is not feasible. No attempt by the receptionist to check for a cancellation or anything like that, just disengaged from the conversation and told me she could give me the number to a local animal emergency room. Seems like this will be the case moving forward with this establishment, I'd rather spend my $$$ somewhere that they value the people behind the pets. I was willing to pay extra (as per the reviews on Yelp) for a more quality service but it seems as though this vet is flush with cash and can't be bothered with your average joe. read more

Very disappointed. After carefully researching places for our cats after a move, we chose this hospital. Very nice techs, and Doctors, but the front office is not very good, that is why the two stars. I tried to get an appointment for a cat with a leg injury, and although it wasn't a crises, She was in pain, and I had to take her to an emergency care, because the soonest appointment was 1.5 weeks out. The reason I chose this place was because they have 4 veterinarians.Hard to believe I couldn't get an appointment sooner. The worst part was I had to ask 3 times for the bloodwork that was done there, and then they wanted to do"followup" bloodwork in three months, even thought there was nothing at all wrong with the cat or the blood work, so no reason to do this except to take money. But, again could not help me with the leg, which was important. very unpleasant person that answers the phone. YES, everyone is aware there is a pandemic, no need to be told this! On the other side of the coin, folks will remember who was helpful. not the place for me. read more

Dr Elliott did call me recently to apologize for what happened with my "baby". I had gotten that little guy 16 yrs ago after the loss of my youngest child. While you are reading this, dog owners, my dog was in renal failure. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that Purina Beneful dog food played a LARGE part in the renal failure of my dog. Do yourself a favor & stay away from Purina in general, they use cheap by-products and many of their ingredients from China. (Be careful with jerky treats as well). You can purchase a decent food, for not a whole lot more money at one of the pet stores. Get online to a site like Pet Food Advisor for what food you might want based on your dog's breed, age & weight! Thank you for the call Dr Elliott, your phone call was appreciated. A great veterinary hospital. Dr. Sweet is a great vet and was very compassionate with my 15 year old cockatiel, Jake. The facility was very clean and organized and the staff were all great. I received a follow up call the next day to ask how my bird was doing and they referenced him by his name which I thought was a great touch! I've been to another vet in CT and when I checked in there they took my bird from me and I didn't see him for a good amount of time. Our 11 year old chinchilla was injured on a Sunday morning so we called his vet in Bolton which is also an after hours emergency care facility. They said they had no one available who knew how to care for a chinchilla and at no point asked how he was or even just offered to take a look since he's an established patient. We then called everywhere we could think of: West Hartford, Hadley, Farmington, Newington, etc., etc. During our exhaustive Google search, we came across Chippens Hill in Bristol. It was fifty minutes away but we didn't care, as long as he was taken care of. When I called, they were very polite and apologized for not having any appointments available that day (not an emergency facility, just happen to have flexible hours). She next asked how he was doing and seemed concerned by my report. She offered another place to try that is an emergency facility but also asked us to call back if we couldn't get through. We got a recording referring us to a place we already called that said they couldn't/ wouldn't help us. I called Chippens Hill back and the doctor (wish I could remember her name) said she would squeeze us in. Upon arrival, the office was clean and kept. The staff was kind and compassionate. She got us right in. The injury was more severe than we thought (hoped) and the doctor outlined two options. We had to decide to say our goodbyes to the sweet boy. He was suffering and it wouldn't be fair to him. We were distraught. They were patient and sincere and treated him with such kindness and care. It was a horrible day we've not recovered from yet but wanted to share our experience, especially considering he wasn't even an established patient of theirs. Of all the calls we made, no one else asked how he was doing or even tried to direct us to help. How can you care for animals without compassion??? We are so grateful to Chippens Hill for their compassion, flexibility, honesty, and kindness. read more

They either won't let you in due to the pandemic (understandable in 2020) or they are closed due to a light snow storm, the wind blowing the wrong way, it's too sunny, etc..... I wouldn't take my dog or any animal anywhere else, unless they were closed and no hope of seeing Dr Elliott. We have been going here for years, can't believe it took me this long to write a review for them. We started going here with our beloved Frankie. He was such an amazing dog and such zeal for life. The staff and vets all loved him; such a stinker they didn't have to announce him, he announced himself with his crazy crying. The best care I've ever could have imagined was provided for him and us, all the way through our life with Frankie and with our adoption of Maggie. Frankie was a unique case; from Dachshund teeth/mouth to hypertension to several bouts (4) with herniated discs, to his constant pancreatitis and having cushings, Dr. Elliott was nothing short of professional and caring. I can also say that she went above and beyond when our little guy passed at the end, she made little paw prints of his feet for us which I hadn't even thought of and such a thoughtful card and checking in on us. I know that our dear Maggie also receives the very best care from her and all the staff at Chippens Maggie is a true light weight when it comes to needing medical care in comparison, but the level of care never waiveres. The staff all keeps up to date on the latest medical technology, while having a strong grasp upon tried and true. They have worked with us on scheduling and making sure procedures and making sure our dogs utmost safety was at the fore front. As long as we live in CT we wouldn't dream of going elsewhere!! read more

Chippens Hill is the only place close to me other than New Haven that services bunnies. I'm so glad I brought my bunny here for a check up. Doctor was very kind and knew what she was talking about when I came to my bun bun. She gave many suggestions and recommendations as far as diet and what he can and can not eat. She also trimmed his nails for me which I have found is difficult to do on my own. Only complaint is I really wanted to schedule an appointment afterwards to neuter my guy but she couldn't find his parts. She said because he was only 4 months, he wasn't mature yet so it was hard to find which makes sense. I haven't been back since because doc also said there are no vaccinations for bunnies so it's not really necessary to bring them in maybe just once a year for check up. I'm planning on going back soon to check on neutering him. read more

This place is amazing. The staff is so nice, caring, and compassionate. It is pricey but I would rather pay the price than go somewhere else with inadequate care. If I could give 0 stars I would. My dogs are established at this vet and wellness visits (vaccines, etc.) are usually fine although the staff is somewhat rude and dismissive of my concerns and questions. However, on the occasions that one of my dogs has been sick or injured, this "animal hospital" refuses to even evaluate my pet during regular business hours. They are rude and insensitive and they don't actually care about my pets. I started bringing my dogs to chippens hill after moving here from out of state and have been shocked by the lack of care and compassion and the blatant disregard for the health of my pets demonstrated by both the vet and the staff. I have had animals all my life and never have I had a vet refuse to see a sick or injured animal. Please do not take your pets here. I am changing vets immediately after my most recent experience and will happily drive 30 minutes for quality care for my pets. read more

Dr. Travis is excellent. She has been calling me every other day for over a week to check on my cat's health and called in an additional prescription as needed. People are extremely honest and caring, while I was on a trip my poor guinea pig had gotten very sick and needed surgery, a relative had to take him in for me. While I was gone the vet called to give updates, fed him, and watched him overnight at their own home to make sure he was going to be okay after his surgery. These people take so much time, care and also have so much patience with everything they do. They were also honest with me about the surgery and everything to do with it. I recently took my 1.5 year old cat, Charlotte, in to see Dr. Clark, to try to determine the cause of her recent coughing. Dr. Clark thoroughly examined Charlotte, gave me a list of options, and recommended blood work. I am so glad that I agreed to the blood work, and am so glad that Dr. Clark has mentioned running an extra test, because if we hadn't we may not have detected Charlotte's heart issue until it was too late. In the days since, Dr. Clark has called me from home each day to check up on Charlotte. She is so kind and compassionate, as are the other staff employed there. They are always willing to answer any question, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. I know my baby is in safe hands at Chippens Hill! read more

I have been going to Fox Memorial Clinic (Newington CT) to have my pets examined and vaccinated. They usually take the pet away from me disappear and do the procedures without me there. I heard my cat screaming over and over and I wanted to go back there so bad and see what they were doing, it took every bit of strength I had not to open that door and find out what was going on...So when they brought her back she was a mess. I asked them what they did to her and they said they took blood from her back leg because they were having a hard time taking it from her neck, I was so pissed off the reason that I brought her was her neck was sore, and a lump was forming.They also took her urine with the needle right from her bladder. I am telling this because when I came to Chippens Hill Veterinary clinic they did all the procedures right in front of me they gave something to my dog to relax her and I got to be right there talking to my pet as they worked on her. As for Fox Memorial they made my sweet loving cat who loved everyone and cuddled with everyone,,,,,super scared of being taken from me. We all need to ban together and make sure they don't take the pet out of our site what is the point? I did find out that my cat is sick and I am certainly not going to take her where they wont let me go too, not ever. I have to pay more to come here but it is worth it for me to stay right with my animals. read more

Our family had a terrible experience with this veterinarian. We have three small dogs and one had a parasite. All three were prescribed a highly toxic medicine as a preventative measure. We gave the first dog the prescribed medicine. He then fell down and passed away right in our kitchen in front of our eyes. We tried to call the emergency line where a rude receptionist answered and was very unhelpful. She was fighting with us over the line instead of relaying our message to the doctor. The doctor didn't return the call for 30 minutes and then tried to SELL US on getting the dog cremated. We later noticed that the paperwork supplied for the medicine indicated the dog weighed 74 pounds! He was a small 7 pound Yorkshire terrier. No refund was supplied. We are so saddened by the malpractice demonstrated by the this location. We have lost a member of our family and nothing can make this wrong right. Went there for the first time today basically because it was the only place I could get an appointment without waiting 2-3 days. My 5 year old chorkie was acting sluggish for a few days. I suspected it was something he ate which was pretty much confirmed by the examination. They did however take advantage of me in my worry about my pet's health. Although it was against my better judgment I agreed to the estimate they gave which was 3 times what it should have been. They then tried to further gouge me by recommending more unnecessary tests that I politely declined. The worst part, however was the extra hour I had to wait there while they took care of an emergency that came in while I was waiting for my pets test results. I understand that there are emergencies but if you accept them you should have the staffing for it. They then proceeded to give my pet a shot and he howled in pain like I have never heard any dog I have had before ever do. Oh, and by the time I got home they had already spammed with an email about pet health insurance which was, of course, at a ridiculous price. These people have no scruples and take advantage of others who are upset and vulnerable. I will never go there again. read more
