So after reading some of the other reviews i'm confused and at a loss. I haven't had the beignets yet, but I was born in Louisiana so I have been tempted to try them. Next time for sure. I must say every time I've been there the service has been great. Naked juices are always around $3, so I don't think there's a surprise there and I had a great breakfast croissant sandwhich that was flaky and had eggs bacon and tomatoes. It totally hit the spot. Beignets? Can't be as good as in New Orleans, which sets the standard for all the powdered sugar fried dough desserts. I wasn't about to get my hopes up but after one bite, I have to say these come the closest (out of all the other beignets I've tried since then) to those yummy bites of heaven they have at Café Du Monde in NOLA. They are the right size and shape and have powdered sugar (though not enough). But the only difference is that these are a bit doughier so you have to kinda tear into it with you teeth while holding on to the remaining piece with your fingers. Also they were warm but not hot. The NOLA ones are airier and each bite just comes off easily and melts in your mouth. Pretty good imitation though. We also got a dozen (only $12.95) with half of the powdered sugar and half cinnamon sugar. My friends who hadn't had the real deal before described it as like eating a funnel cake and churro, respectively. Haha. But I think we all referred the powdered sugar more. They say they make it fresh so we had to wait like 15 minutes for it to come out but just chatted away. The place isn't huge but there are plenty of places to sit since most people probably get it to go. And it's really, literally right off the Fruitvale BART exit. I stopped here with my friends as we were leaving Dia de los Muertos Festival a few weekends ago. It was raining the whole time (it ranged from misting to serious rainfall) and beignets, hot drinks, high seats, and good conversations were exactly what we needed before BARTing away! While the beignets were ok, this is only 1 of 2 places I've seen in the Bay Area with beignets. Certainly they're not remotely close to Cafe Dumond's AMAZINGNESS (you have to go to New Orleans), but it was a nice treat that day. Perhaps my positive experience that day is influencing this review, but I'd also say location and supply/demond makes a difference! It's right outside the BART station in Fruitvale. I wasn't as much of a fan of the powdered sugar one just because I feel like it's not as unique and I could have gotten that at Brenda's. Definitely enjoyed the cinnamon sugar better because it was tastier and more flavorful. I loved how airy these beignets were, definitely tasted like an airy donut and not the least bit bready. They were served warm too so it was extra delicious, but do prepared to get messy because eating a beignet daintily is no easy task, but fortunately enough I'm great at being a dainty eater. :) read more

ive never had a beignet before so im a horrible reference to the real thing. there was one person who had already ordered and it did get pretty busy after we placed our order... but after walking up to the counter several times to see if our order was coming up... it was a little ridiculous. the shop was cute. the pictures on the wall gave it character and it was clean. the plants needed a little water and the red bull needed to be restocked. *hey when you wait what seems like FOREVER you notice these things* i mean how long does it take to fry up some dough and sprinkle powder sugar on top? maybe they were mad cause we didnt order any coffee and instead brought over saigon wraps yummy yum yum thai ice tea over. alas our order arrives *she brought it out to us* and we dig in. and HOLY HOTNESS we all burn our fingers. i guess you can say they were FRESH. we ended up having to sit there looking at it for another 5 minutes before we could actually dig in. AND IT WAS OK. it wasnt great. it wasnt horrible. it was fun seeing how everyone ate it. although i would much rather spend my calories somewhere else. read more

Really nice cafe. The ambiance is really nice and well-lit even on a rainy and gloomy day. I could picture myself coming back and doing some work there. Tried the beignets and they were delicious. However, even if you're dining there, they're served in a little box. I wish they would give you a plate so you can eat/share. But it's not that bad I guess. I've been coming here for a couple months now, usually get the white chocolate mocha and a breakfast sandwich. So this Saturday it took a little longer to get our drinks, guy behind the counter came over to me and asked what I was waiting for, and I gave him the receipt, he asked the barista for the drinks and she replied with an attitude "they're right there don't you see them" dude wth?! The beignets are great! My husband is a New Orleans native, so it's hard to impress him, and he was happy with them. Ordering and picking up is annoying. Long lines and only 2 people working. Anytime I am around Fruitvale BART, I have to stop buy. I love the beignets. Powderface has excellent staff, They are helpful and friendly. It is always clean, the vacuum clean must be stuffed with powder sugar. There is free WIFI, so you can log in and get some work done if necessary. Their beignets are amazing!!!! :) when they are just done, so when each beignet is hot, it is just perfect with a cup of black coffee. You can get a set of three for about $5 bucks. I love them and I crave them all the time. They always leave the door open so feels less suffocating. Overall, it's pretty artsy place. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would...This coffee shop has the worst customer service....If you have a personal cup they'll still fill a paper cup & pour it into your personal cup, then discard the paper cup all so they don't give you more than what you paid for...They don't use gloves when preparing your food...I've observed their female employee with red hair not wash her hands after using the restroom (their restroom is offsite) I assume she washes them when she gets back to the store...That's only an assumption though... read more

I'm posting this review not to knock this cafe, but to explain a little bit about what a beignet from New Orleans is like so you know that Powderface's beignets aren't how all beignets are. An example would be, how all beers are exactly the same. I just got back from New Orleans today, literally. And I went to Cafe Du Monde 4 times and even had beignets at Cafe Beignet. Cafe Du Monde is a few hundred years old and they serve beignets and Cafe Au Lait (with chicory) 24/7. I know it's wrong to try to compare Powderfaces beignets to God's (Cafe Du Monde) but let me explain to you the differences between the two because I just had Du Mondes. On my way home I got off at Fruitvale and knew Powderface was there and I decided to do a taste test. Powderface's beignet was very thin, completely hollow, and very bland. My girlfriend said it tasted like the dough was savory instead of sweet and tasted more like a waffle. Beignets in New Orleans on the other hand are very thick, not hollow at all, and have much more flavor. But I gotta hand it to Powderface. Even though I didn't like their beignet it's cool that they're serving them. You can make your own at home and you can even buy Cafe Du Monde beignet mix at Cost Plus and even Cafe Du Monde coffee with chicory.
