Workers love animals. They have a separate open area for cats. There are beds, climbing trees, and a large play area. The groomers have a good report with the dogs. I have been using Powderhouse for over five years. They have boarded four dogs that I have owened over that time and I can safely say that all four dogs loved being boarded here. Two of my dogs seemed to know they were at Powderhouse and would get excited once they got of the car. I drive the distance from South Augusta to take my pets to Powderhouse. They kept me up to date with her care, groomed her and trimmed her nails, and she came home a very happy pup they even went the extra mile and gave me a picture of her from her stay and notes from the staff who cared for her. They really took care of Bruno when I had to drop Bruno off my first weekend in my new place. I loved everything about the staff, from the way they handled him, to the way they let him play in the water (Bruno's favorite while there), and the way they fed him. This is a first rate place! I've taken my dog here twice and both times she seemed to be really happy there. One telling sign is that she was excited to be back the second time. They also were great about being able to take her on short notice. The only downside is that they charge top dollar for everything and try to nickel and dime you for things like play times, treats, swims and such. read more

The employees of this place have no decency and do not deserve any future business. I am an active duty Marine who is stationed on Parris Island, Beaufort county, about 2.5 hours away from Powderhouse. Due to an extremely active hurricane season for the past 2 years, I was tasked to be a part of the advance party that implants all the necessary coordination to provide warehouse space and life support services for 7500 recruits and Marines evacuating to Albany, GA within 24 hours. I have a pet cat and needed a place inland to board her in the event Beaufort, SC and other coastal cities (Savannah/Charleston) was threatened by a hurricane. I turned to Powderhouse in Aiken and explained to them that due to the very unpredictable nature of hurricanes and my operational commitments, I would need them to board my cat at a very short moment's notice with no prior reservation. They said they had no issues and would be able to help me in my time of need. Fast forward a few months, Hurricane Florence threatened to impact Beaufort County. Due to preparations required to depart for Albany, GA and my prior arrangements for a pet-sitter falling through the Saturday before I was required to depart for Albany on Sunday, I only had that Saturday to drop my cat off at Powderhouse. I called Powderhouse for assistance. They refused to take my cat because they would have to stay open for 1 hour past closing time (I lived 2.5 hours away). At this point, Hurricane Florence was projected to be a Cat 4 hurricane and was projected to hit anywhere from NC to SC. I pleaded with them to make an exception, and they said they will charge me a $25 convenience fee. Before I could commit to them, I was called in for conference regarding Parris Island evacuation. I called them immediately after the conference was over, but no one answered the phone. I called multiple times and no one picked up. Scrambling, I called a boarding place in Savannah, GA. While much closer than Aiken, SC, I initially avoided coastal cities because they are also at risk for destructive weather and didn't feel comfortable boarding my cat there. The customer service rep, however, was more than happy to take my cat. She briefed me on their evacuation plan if Hurricane Florence threatened Savannah, and said they can keep her until I got back. My cat was safely evacuated there, and I left for Albany the next day. The employees of Powderhouse Pet Resort have no decency. They bitched about having to stay open for an additional hour and did not care about the well being of my cat. On top of that, they tried to take advantage of me and make extra money off my desperate situation. Potential customers: stay away from this place. They will not be flexible to assist you in emergency situations. These people failed me in my time of need. I will not be coming back. read more

The only reason Powderhouse Pet Resort is getting one star is because Yelp doesn't accept reviews of zero stars. I will never take my pets there again. I boarded my dog once in June 2009, and when I picked him up, he had two wounds on his mouth. I decided to give them another shot, and boarded him over Thanksgiving weekend 2009. I told them about the wounds he'd had the last time, and that I'd be checking him when I picked him up. The owner was there, and instructed the employees to keep an eye on my dog to see if he was possibly grabbing the fence. When I picked him up, I paid, collected my dog and his things, went outside, checked his mouth and sure enough, two more wounds. I went back inside and told them what I'd found. The owner sounded shocked at first, but then said that yes, one of the girls had observed my dog grabbing the fence, which she confirmed. No one volunteered this information while I was paying. It wasn't until I confronted them with it that they admitted what they'd seen. Apparently, they hadn't checked my dog to see whether his grabbing the fence had caused any injury, and hadn't treated his injuries the whole time he was there. The owner did apologize profusely, but then said, "Obviously, we want your business." What he should have said was, "We don't want any dogs injured in our care." or "We'll take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again." Instead, what he essentially said was, "Obviously, we want your money." The owner also said it would probably be written in my dog's report card that he'd been grabbing the fence and injured himself. No. When we got home and read the card, there was no mention of this at all. What it did say was my dog "had a great time barking his head off." This is not an indication of a good time. This is an indication of stress. When I took my dog there, I explained to the employee taking down my information that my dog was a rescue, and was abused by his former owners as a puppy. I told her he's a little skittish and nervous. She responded that she understood and it wasn't a problem. If they're not able or willing to give a little extra attention to a traumatized dog, they should say so. If they'd said, "We're going to put him in a cage and ignore him while he barks and grabs the fence." I wouldn't have left him there. The employees at Powderhouse Pet Resort seem to not have been through any kind of animal behavior training, and do not know how to care for animals. How can anyone see a dog grabbing a fence with his mouth, and not even check to see if he's hurt, even after I told them specifically this had happened the last time, and even after the owner instructed them to look for it? To me, this means they don't care. They're there primarily to make money, not care for animals. In addition, when I boarded my dog in June, I also left my cockatiel in their care. They don't usually board birds, but the owner said it was ok since birds are so low maintenance. When I dropped him off, I told the receptionist that all they had to do was make sure he had clean water every day, and keep his food dish full. When I picked him up three days later, his water dish was dirty and low, and his food dish was half empty, making it difficult for my bird to reach his food. If they can't even manage to give water and food to a little bird, how can they take care of dogs? I regret leaving my dog there a second time. But while in their reception area, I saw all the "Best Kennel" awards from the Aiken Standard newspaper reader polls, and thought maybe these bad instances had been flukes. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong. Whoever voted in those reader polls that Powderhouse Pet Resort is the best kennel in Aiken either hasn't had any bad experiences, or the employees just haven't told the owners about anything that happened while they were away, the same way they kept quiet about my dog's injuries until I pointed them out. To anyone who voted or will vote in those reader polls, I ask you to think twice before you do. In fact, go take a tour of the facility. They keep the dogs in cement-bottomed cages with thin blankets to lie on, and then close them up in other cages lined with rocks to do their business. My dog's feet were sore when he got home. He stepped gingerly, and took care to stay on the rug instead of the hardwood floors we have. If that doesn't sway you, the comment made by the owner about wanting my business over wanting to care for the animals should tell you what the main interest is at Powderhouse Pet Resort. read more

Powderhouse has some areas where they could improve, but overall, I would trust them with my dog, and that's the most important thing. Pros: Decently convenient to those who live in or around downtown Aiken The staff is very nice and seem to really care about the dogs My dog appeared happy when I picked him up They gave me a cute report card and photo of him playing in the water (my favorite part) Regular suites are $23/night which isn't bad Cons: I prefer boarding where my dog gets as much playtime and interaction as possible. In CA where everything is over priced, I used to pay about $35 a night, but my dog was out in the play yards from about 6 am to 7pm (with breaks for lunch and rest of course). There was a reason he'd leap out of my car with his tail frantically wagging whenever we arrived there. This place offers playtime or pool time, but for an additional fee. And each additional fee only covers one short (30 min or so) session. Or you can pay $45 a night for it to be included in their stay. $45 a night, in my opinion, is steep for your dog to sit in a kennel for the majority of the day and get out once a day to play/swim. Granted they also throw in a daily treat for the price, but my dog would much rather be getting interaction and stimulation. Essentially, I think Powderhouse is a great place with some really great concepts. I think the option of them giving your dog treats or play time/swim time is awesome. I just wish that within their fees, they would include more opportunities for the dogs to get out and have fun. Will I use them in the future? Absolutely. Will they be my first choice? No. Because I can take my dog to Augusta (further drive, yes) to Animal House and know that he will be out playing with other dogs and getting more exercise than he even does when he's at home with me. All for a cheaper price. Note: They will charge you for the full day Sunday even if they are not staying the night. I made a day trip on a Saturday, and wouldn't be back in time for the Saturday pick up. I knew that I'd be charged the overnight fee for Saturday, but was surprised when I was charged for 2 days of board, even though I picked him up as soon as they were open on Sunday. They do explain this in their policies, I just didn't quite understand it until I payed my bill. Not their fault, but something to be aware of. read more

My boyfriend and I left our fur baby in their care for a 4 day weekend. Dabo had never had a kennel experience and we were very nervous about who to choose to make sure he was well taken care of. I'm so glad we chose this location. He was a happy boy when he was dropped off and picked up. They wrote us two personal thank you letters letting us know how good he was and enjoyed his stay. They even included pictures from him splashing around in the pool which was a very nice touch. We will be back. Thank you for relieving our worries and giving us a great experience! read more

My family has boarded our animals there throughout the years, and after moving out of the parents house and getting my own dog I had planned to utilize them as well. On more than one occasion my dog was returned to me sick - worms once, and another time he vomited up food that was not dog food. Naturally my husband called to complain. Well, apparently instead of apologizing and offering to fix the problem on our next visit they decided that we were no longer welcome at their facility. When I called to give them one more chance (deciding to bring our own food instead of trusting theirs a third time), I was hung up on after I told the guy my dogs name. I tried to call back multiple times, and there was no pickup. When I called back the next day I was informed that "because the last few times you were not happy with his level of care we feel it's best that you find someplace else to board him." Beware of a place that would rather black list you than make things right with a customer. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with Powderhouse. I love their boarding services because they truly know what it takes to take care of your pets, and my dog always came back full of joy and tuckered out whenever I picked her up. I hate, however, that they exploit you with their pricing schemes. You pay a basic nightly rate to board which seems reasonable at first. However, this does not include the basic playtime or mental stimulation that your dog needs every day. This covers the bare bones requirements of leaving them in a concrete box the majority of the day and taking them out to go to the bathroom every so often. If you want your dog to run around in the yard or romp in the pool (and come on, who doesn't want to spoil their fur babies?), you are going to pay for it - heavily. I have some deep fundamental issues with a boarding facility tacking on an exorbitant amount of fees just to provide your pet with its basic daily exercise needs. So, I'm giving three stars because this really is a great place to board, and your dog will undoubtedly have a good experience. But I personally stopped using their services because I was tired of spending well over $100 in boarding per dog for a simple weekend trip when a lot of other places in the CSRA will give your pets unlimited exercise by letting them participate in their doggy daycare programs for less than half the price. read more

We drove down from Chicago with our two rescue kids and needed a place for them to stay for a night, my brother had spoken highly of PHPR so we gave it a try. The pet grooming services at Powderhouse are top notch and highly recommended. Their boarding facility is suspect and not recommended. Each time we've boarded our dog there she has to relieve herself immediately in the parking area as though she hasn't had an opportunity to go for a while. Also the last time we boarded her there she came home with fleas. We'll probably continue to use their grooming services but will not board her there anymore. read more
