I knew Lowe's wouldn't be any help, so I tried the nearest place selling lawn equipment. The guys working behind the counter took one look at me and told me to leave because they didn't carry Troy-bilts. I tried explaining that the problem was universal to any weedeater, but they weren't having any of it, and told me I could buy a new one of the brands they carry, and then basically ignored me after that. Seems like the type of place that caters to a very specific professional customer, or someone looking to overspend on whatever the fancy brands are that they carry -- not the average person. Not what I would normally expect out of a neighborhood place, but whatever.
