Fun group of divers that love to dive often and in different Southern California spots. Although not a San Diego resident, I love to dive often with them particularly when they get closer to LA diving spots. Although the recommended experience level may vary per dive location, this group provides diving opportunities for all diving levels and this is why I highly recommend them. read more

Bill was my open water instructor back in 2004 and i have been hooked since then. Awesome instructor and makes everyone feels very comfortable. Pays very close attention to the students unique needs and does take his time explaining divining principles again and again until the whole class gets it. He does all this in a FUN way that does not get you board. read more

Moving back to San Diego after being gone for 5 years (and coming back with a wife new to San Diego), we were happy to find a scuba diving group that is as active -- both in terms of diving and socializing -- as Power Scuba. I've been in a handful of dive clubs in my life, and this one is by far the most active. I drove all the way down from Morro Bay to dive the cove. Glad I found PowerScuba. No hot dogs on our Sat dive. Everyone was focused on safety and the skill levels are varied. Heard of Power Scuba a few years ago after moving to SD. It's a fun group of people and I've made a bunch of friends and found some great dive buddies through PS. Power Scuba always offers lots of scheduled dives whether it's local shore or boat dives, trips to Catalina and other local islands or dive trips overseas. They also do underwater clean ups several times a year. Being a non-profit, the prices for boat dives and other trips are pretty good. read more

Simply the best dive group in California. A bunch of likeminded individuals that all support ocean conservation and proper diver safety. With ties to multiple other ocean conservation groups this group offers very one of a kind opportunities such as regular dives of Scripps Canyon, annual SD Bay clean ups that allow divers to dive sights such as the maritime museum and all with the greater cause of ocean conservation and education in mind. They've been awarded proclamations from the City Council and Mayor's office for great work, have helped saved lives, and most important of all have provided countless opportunities for divers to connect and get wet! With free membership and being a non-profit this group provides many affordable dive opportunities and free weekly shore diving opportunities. I have been an instructor in San Diego for almost 7 years with both PADI and SDI/TDI and teach everything from entry level through professional levels and technical diving. I recently started my own business and dive center and have always appreciated having Power Scuba as a part of our local dive community. From Bill Powers to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to plan great trips and outings and lead local dives, it is a wonderful group committed to keeping divers in the water and I am all for that! I worked doing marketing with non-profits for many years and respect organizations that do what they do out of passion. I recommend Power Scuba to my students and customers as a great way to engage other divers and grow experience outside of classes and be a contributor to protecting our beautiful ocean through their beach clean ups and trash removal events. I went with Power Scuba for a wreck dive on the Palawan today. The event was well organized, and the dives went great. There was a focus on safety from the very beginning, and Bill the organizer made sure that everyone was safe and had fun. Power Scuba is an outstanding group! I fully disagree with the negative reviews below, as I have not experienced any of those issues since becoming a member in 2013 and have logged roughly 120 dives with this group since then. Every trip I have been on, the group organizer has ALWAYS emphasized safety. 100% of every trip Bill is on, he ALWAYS makes announcements as to safety procedures, buddy checks, and reviewing hand signals. I also love how the group is focused on conservation, and I try to participate in every underwater clean-up that is scheduled. Can't be said strongly enough....excellent group and I feel super lucky to have found them when I was a young newbie diver back in 2013. read more

This group is a good as it gets. Divers from very skilled technical divers to newly certified divers. The group welcomes all and is not uptight. Other than beach dives, most of the trips (thankfully) are for AOW and above. So refreshing to go on a boat and not be stuck at some super shallow sand patch just because a OW class is on the boat as you see on many shop charters. The organizers have a strong focus on safety. There are no dues and all of the trips are not for profit. Beach dives are free and local boat dives throughout So. Cal are at offered at significant discounts. There are also some great prices on gear and international trips. I have been a member for several years and have never had a problem thanks to all of the hard work that the organizers put into this group. read more

The founder of the club (Bill Powers) uses the group to solicit students for private lessons. He initially comes off as approachable and friendly, but everything changes once he gets your money. Don't expect him to answer the phone, call you back, return your e-mails, or answer on Meetup (a vast difference from how quickly he responds when you initially want to sign up for lessons!). Expect a beginner diving course to take MONTHS with Bill (in comparison, this takes a couple weekends at most with a legitimate dive shop). He promises private or small group classes catering to your schedule, but it certainly doesn't feel like it when you can't even get in touch with him to schedule dives much less get him to commit to a date. Avoid at all costs. You've been warned. read more

With memberships heading towards 2,000 people, it's probably the largest dive club in the U.S., but it also has a very intimate feeling. Everyone is friendly, supportive, and safety comes first. We also have a lot of fun! There's no membership fee. There are events nearly every week, and often multiple events each week. There are shore dives, boat trips, island trips, international trips, parties, happy hours, and a lot more. Been a member for a little over a year now and so glad I joined. This group has something going on pretty much every week, year round. I've made many friends and thanks to the group boat charters I've been able to dive many new sites very affordably. Oil rigs, Tanner Banks, Farnsworth Banks and San Clemente were standouts.
