I'm gonna be honest here, I was not impressed, especially with all the raving reviews. The prices are a little expensive. A kids meal was $9 . A side of anything was $4. The regular meal stuff was between $14-18 on average. We ordered onion rings, pretty sure I got double charged but I was too much in a hurry and forgot to check. Also, the onion rings were gross, I've had better from Burger King. The most edible thing I received was a peaches (fruit in a cup, like from the store) and even that was warm . My sausage gravy tasted like it came from a premade bag and was heated in water. My kids hamburger had a little seasoning on it, that was ok. The grilled cheese "looked" really good. It was extremely greasy but not from butter, it was like straight oil flavored. French fries were soggy. Cottage cheese was watery and the actual curds looked gross, didn't taste good either and it was warm . Also, as others have said, they only take cash. There is an atm outside. But they don't warn you when you come in. I didn't see it posted anywhere, so if it is posted, it's not very noticeable if you are busy as you're walking in. I'm just sayin, don't stop. Don't spend close to $100 on crappy food. Drive 30 more minutes and find some fast food or something. I'm extremely displeased and now I'm not even hungry because the smell in my car is making me feel sick. Blah! read more

This place is a greasy diner. The ingredients aren't anything flashy and are pretty processed, but it's solid and very cheap. I had the walleye 'sandwich' which was $7.50 and upgraded 1.75 to substitute onion rings. They also had an all you can eat walleye that night for a few bucks more, but I can't imagine what that would've been like. The sandwich came with 3 huge pieces of fish. Couldn't even eat half of it but it was delicious. They have hand dipped onion rings that are worth trying. This became a running joke because my mom used to actually work there in high school and while we were making onion rings at home once she mentioned she used to dip onion rings at the Powhatan... and here we are 35 years later still talking about it! They have beer by the pitcher or mug and it's cheap. We ordered a pitcher of Sam Adams and it was gross so we sent it back for something else, she said she just changed the keg and the mixture wasn't right? IDK. Order the special Shepard Pie, it consisted of canned vegetables ground hamburger a sprinkle of cheese over a small pile of mashed potatoes served in a small bowl. Really for 13.95? Also the other person with me got the pork roast special, no Seasonings and dry. The corn served was defiantly leftover and dried out. Also 13.95 Soda was 2.95 for a small glass and never offered a refill. Restrooms trash running over. To top it off the did not accept credit cards. Seriously a huge disappointment $36 dollars plus tip so over $40 what rip off. read more

Lady charged me $163.43 for a $16.43 meal. She told me she refunded me the $163.43 and handed me a top of the same receipt as I had. Told me that was the top to the refund . Waited 24 hours and called my credit card company to check on the refund. Credit card company said there was no refund posted on that date just the bill of $163.43 . Called the place and they keep passing the buck . Said they will get back with me tomorrow. We'll see ! Warning ! If you eat at this place beware of them scamming your credit card. Check you bill and be sure you get a refund receipt in full not just a top copy of the overcharged bill. read more

Man, what a gem this place is! I was heading out of St. Louis and was looking for something different, well, I found it! My only real complaint is the service. I ordered TOGO and the server was in no way pleasant. I almost felt like I was bothering her. She wasn't busy when I first got there, but was towards the end when it took 25 mins to get a turkey club TOGO. But I can deal with those little mishaps. This place is a gem. Almost a ghost town feel. I wish it had been about 10 hours later, or 10 hours sooner, I would have stayed at their attached Motel which had a rustic feel. The Turkey Club was EXCELLENT! Turkey wasn't the cheap supermarket slimy special. I would say it was... quite possibly carved. The bacon had a smoked flavor and was thick and crunchy And man, then there was the FRIES! How great these things were! They had a slight coating, not greasy but a decent crunch, but soft in the middle. Did that make sense? You have to try them, I'm telling you. I almost felt like I was at a ski lodge in Colorado. The interior has exposed rafters, and hardwood floors, with plenty of natural lighting. I came here by demand of an old alumni of the area and was told it is the spot for late night food that's cheap, huge portions, and delicious. They were right in all of those categories. I was told I had to order the Horseshoe, which entails as an open face cheese burger that is absolutely covered with chili and cheese and a side of fries even bigger covered just as well. I tried my best, but still left a few bites. I felt accomplished still for how I had fared. I tried my friends spicy chicken tenders that were great as well. Now the best part for me was the hot chocolate. I'm sure that it was just a machine with powder in it, but dang that was the best powdered hot chocolate I've ever had. even topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Wow, what a great surprise. The last time I was here was in the early 90's and the place was a regular run-of-the-mill roadside diner. Nothing that special. So after a 20 year hiatus we stopped in and had lunch. I had a Mushroom and Swiss burger and I substituted the fries for a loaded baked potato. It wasn't only good, it was damn good. This place is worth going out of your way for. They offer numerous "specials" and the food that I had was really good that would put a Cracker Barrel to shame. I haven't been here in over 5 years! And boy was I happy to return. I visited this place at least once a week while a college student. There are so many great menu options here, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the menu had remained relatively the same. I went with a nostalgic favorite, the spicy chicken tenders. Perfection. These suckers are spicy and not for the faint of heart! They're also sloppy wet which makes them even awesomer. When they say Big Breakfast they mean BIG. Was there for dinner and breakfast. The homemade French dressing was fantastic. I wish I could have taken home a bottle of it. The following morning after staying in the adjoining hotel, which was an absolute gem, we had breakfast. I had the Powhatan which was amazing and filling. I absolutely love this place. The food is great and they give you alot and you're paying only about 8 bucks. From the outside, it's a beaten down truck stop where it looks like someone might be murdered, but the people are nice. Not the best, the ham I ordered was very salty, and my sister ordered jack salmon and got 3 crappy cooked whole bass or some other little fish that was not even close to salmon. I have a feeling breakfast here would be awesome... Lunch was just ok. I had the chicken strips which were really big but the batter didn't stay on and the taste was good but not phenomenal. Fries are really good though! My husband had a burger. He said it was juicy and definitely home made but not the burger of his life. The kids meals were good.
