We are driving from St LOUIS and decided to stop and try this place. We were very pleasantly surprised. They give such big portions of food. You get your Entree and 5 sides with rolls. Served family style. We have 5 hours to drive home or we would have taken left overs. They also have lots of pie options with some being "Mile high pies" lots of meringue. I had cherry. Stopped in on my way to the day Louis airport when I saw a sign "Blue Springs cafe as seen on food network". Well being the goodie that I am stopped in. Cute diner you would find in any no name town all over middle America. First thing I noticed was the mile high pies right when you walk in. The waitress said sit anywhere you want. Sat down and looked at the menu. Very simple but lunch was 10.95 with 2 sides. I ordered the cod. Had the cole slaw which is a vinegar based slaw and the pickled beets. If course I asked is everything made from scratch? And she said yes. The wait was long for lunch with only about 9 people in the dining room. The sides came out first but I like to eat all my lunch at one time. I nibbled at the slaw and beets which were very good. The cod sandwich came with tartar sauce and 1 slice of white bread for 2 pieces of cod. I couldn't eat it like a sandwich cuz the bread wouldn't hold up. I ate just the cod. The breading was a corn meal base but it was tasty. The cod was cooked perfectly, glistening like Gordon Ramsey says. Really good cod. Once I finished I had to try a piece of pie. Ordered the blueberry. There were very tall meringue pies of all kinds. Lemon, chocalate, custard etc. just want to try a regular blueberry pie. It was one of the best I had eaten. The crust was flaky and delicious. The blue berries were very small so I think they were maybe frozen? Nonetheless delicious. Next time I'm back will go in and try something else. This is a quaint little cafe that you will find right off of the highway. There is a huge private parking lot to park and there is a decent sized dining area to eat. This is a cash only joint, so in other words, yes, I had to pay the ATM that they had on-site, a visit. The staff there is very friendly and this place has a nice mix of transient patrons, such as myself and loyal regulars. The restaurant has a down home, country vibe and is very low key. They serve diner favorites such as burgers, sandwiches, meatloaf, chicken, roast beef, lasagna, and walleye. They also have a wide assortment of amazing pies. This place is home to Foot High Pies including coconut, chocolate, banana and lemon. They also have fruit pies (Blueberry, blackberry, apple, cherry, peach, strawberry rhubarb, and chocolate chip pecan. I ordered some of their fried chicken with a side of baked beans and french fries for me and chicken tender with fries for the littles. It took about 15 minutes for us to get my food. It was fresh and hot. The chicken was good, but was definitely not up there with the best that I have ever had. I really liked the fries and the baked beans were different from the normal ones, but were really good too. Of course, I could not leave there without getting some pie. I snagged a slice of their blackberry pie. You have the option of getting it heated and with a scoop of ice cream. I asked for mine to be heated, but they must have forgot and I got it cold. It was good either way. I really enjoyed it. I wish I could have taken a whole pie home, but I was traveling and it would not have worked. I recommend checking this place out. They have some friendly staff, eye catching and delicious pies, some good food and a very laid back atmosphere. I enjoyed my visit here and it was a welcomed stop on my way to St. Louis. read more

I've driven by the Blue SPrings Cafe many times while traveling I-70 between Columbus and Denver but wwe were never passing through at either lunch or dinner time. This trip the timing was right and we stopped for a late lunch. I had the walleye fillets with pickled beets and a vinegar based Cole slaw while my wife had the crab cakes with side salad and soup of the day. The food was excellent as was the service. Considering the time (it was after 1p), I was surprised at how busy the restaurant was. Their signs advertise foot high pies. And they had a nice assortment of foot high cream pies and an equally nice selection of other fruit and assorted pies. Unfortunately I can't vouch for the pies since we didn't have room for pie after eating lunch. And I didn't want to eat too much and get drowsy while driving. But I CAN ATTEST that the pies LOOKED WONDERFUL. We're going to time a future trip so we can stop here again. read more

We stopped here for lunch on our way home from St.Louis. It is standing at a highway exit as the only restaurant in sight there... but that's not the reason we went here. I had read good reviews and I knew it would be good. As you enter you see a bunch of pies on the counter. They all look great. I liked how they have many lunch special options. I had fried chicken with mashed potato and green beans- oh boy that's a LOT of food for under $10! Great. It's hard to find this type of generosity in the city for sure. Food took longer than preferred. Service was good. But they are cash only. There is an ATM inside. We saw a million? Okay maybe not a million, but close-billboards on the highway. We had to stop. Not sure how we haven't before, but it's right off the highway. We took a seat and I ordered the lemon meringue-the meringue pies are the ones considered foot high. My friend ordered the strawberry rhubarb heated up with a scoop of vanilla. Mine was just not lemony enough. I wanted more tartness. The meringue was good, but it in no world was I going to eat it all. My friend loved hers so we ended up getting a whole one to take to our friend. It was perfectly tart and sweet! We also got a piece of blueberry to take to our friend and it was very sweet. I had noticed the "Foot High Pies" billboards along the interstate several times when traveling between Indianapolis and St. Louis. On this trip I decided to stop and give it a try for lunch. When I arrived the dining room was probably half full. Both booths and tables were available. Interestingly, throughout the dining room, about half the tables were covered with tablecloths, the others had none. Diners were sitting at tables and booths with and without tablecloths. I was aware that this restaurant was "cash only" due to mentions in multiple Yelp reviews. But I did not see any signs posted, so I am sure some customers will be surprised. I ordered one of the posted lunch specials, a two piece cod dinner with two sides. I chose mashed potatoes and green beans for my sides. My food was served very quickly. The cod was decent, if unremarkable. The breading seemed to be cornmeal without any type of seasonings so it lacked flavor. The sides were excellent! Both the green beans and mashed potatoes definitely tasted homemade. I overheard diners seated at the table beside mine discussing with the server that the sides were their favorite part of the meal. I would agree! I would return to try more of the sides, as I love good homemade side dishes. My only disappointment was the pie. Sigh. I wanted to love the pie, and I ordered a slice of lemon meringue to go. Lemon meringue is one of my favorite pies, but sadly this was not very good. The meringue was tall and fluffy but the lemon filling was very lumpy and curdled, not smooth and tangy like a lemon meringue pie should be. I am not sure if something was wrong with this particular piece or if that is the way their lemon pies are made, but the filling was definitely curdled. Also, there wasn't really a crust, just small bits of crumbled pastry on the bottom. Again, this could be the way their pies are supposed to be, it just wasn't what I had expected. Next time I would probably try one of the fruit pies. My meal, including a soft drink and pie slice, was around $20 before tip. My server was friendly and helpful, and brought another soda before my glass was empty. read more

I hadn't eaten anything and so was pretty hungry after the flight from Fort Myers to St Louis. Driving up I-70, we stopped here and enjoyed some good home cooked food. I ordered their Roast Beef and Swiss on a Hoagie Roll ($9.95) along with baked beans and a side cup of their chili ($2.95). I enjoyed the chili and baked beans very much. They both had a great taste. I thought the sandwich was good, but the amount of hoagie roll to beef and cheese was a little overwhelming. I think the sandwich could have been great if it would have had more roast beef and cheese (IMO) - even if it means raising the price. The highlight was dessert and their famous homemade pies. I skipped their best seller, coconut cream, instead opting for a slice of delicious blueberry. It was excellent! Come here, if for nothing else, to try their pies! I've had this spot in my Collections for awhile now. I had heard about their pie and wanted to try it. Hubby and I went here on a Saturday and I was pleased to learn that they have lunch specials on Saturday! This is a nice discount from the regular prices and still plenty of food. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appy and it was delicious. The wrap was perfectly fried and the inside sooooo creamy. We both ordered fried chicken for lunch and WOW it was phenomenal! The skin was crispy but also light - I loved it. I had mashed potatoes and green beans for my sides. I felt like they were average but still tasty. We has to finish with coconut cream pie. The filling was a perfect texture and the taste was on point! Also reasonably priced. The service was friendly and attentive. I also like when a server gives opinions - I was debating between the chicken and dumplings and the fried chicken and asked which she recommended. She said both are popular sellers but on the particular day we went the chicken and dumplings were a bit brothier than normal (I told her I like them kind of thick) so fried chicken would be a better bet. And now for something completely different....this review is all about the pie! Seriously, I've never had the actual food here, just the pie. This little gem is off Highway 70 in Highland, IL. You'll know you're getting close because there is a billboard (maybe handpainted?) advertising "Mile High Pies"....and they're not far off! There is a huge selection of the aforementioned meringue pies and fruit pies right when you walk in to tempt you. This time, I got the chocolate cream and coconut cream, both topped with meringue, and a piece of peach pie. The chocolate was a custard-like cooked filling, a little less sweet to compliment the perfect meringue. It's a homemade crust but don't forget - there's a price to pay for meringue, it's going to weep and make the crust soggy. These pies are seriously worth stopping on your way through. Grab a few pieces to go and enjoy the pie love! BUT DON'T FORGET THE CASH! They only accept cash or check. Wanted good fried chicken and decided to try the Blue springs Cafe. We were not disappointed. Ordered the 2 piece lunch, all white meat. We were told that it would take about 20 minutes, which we were fine with. The chicken was delicious and juicy. Everything was very good! Breading was perfect, light, crunchy and well seasoned. Had mashed potatoes (real) with white gravy and green beans, which were very good also. Usually we don't get dessert, but enjoyed ourselves so much that we decided to share a piece of peach pie.... Very good! (Sorry I didn't get a picture of the pie). The slice was 1/6 of a 10 inch pie. We were both very full when we left. Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this chicken. Well first off, this restaurant does not take card, they have absolutely no signage saying that they don't take card. and they don't let you know until after you have already ate. so I had to pull cash out of an ATM They had there which cost me a $7 fee just to pull the money out we are traveling so this is our first time eating here, the food was not good. They said they were known for their fried chicken but it had absolutely no seasoning and it was quite hard to chew. We had to send the French onion soup back because it was cold, the onion rings are like the pre made frozen ones from sonic. The bathroom door didn't lock, It definitely was not a good first time experience, however, the pie was absolutely amazing! They are all homemade we had 3 and they were all good.
