A "retro diner" with friendly service and very good food. After a two and half hour early morning flight, I was ready for a bite to eat. I looked at the local Yelp reviews and this sounded good. Our server was friendly and like clockwork when it came to keeping our coffee cups refilled with steaming hot and very good coffee (because it was freezing cold out there baby!). I really enjoyed my steak and eggs. The steak was tender and the eggs were cooked according to my instructions. The inside was decorated with pictures of Illinois' two favorite sports teams - which would be the Cardinals and the Cubs, along with historical references to old Route 66 that had so much influence on these small towns in Southern Illinois. I went here with my mom and siblings for Mother's Day and we were seated within minutes. The waitress we had was awesome and very attentive and joked around my my little brother. I have not been here since it was reopened as "Highland Diner" and I was very impressed. I loved the retro diner feel. The food was phenomenal, but be careful about getting a short stack as a side. We were in town for Kirkenfest but wanted breakfast first. Their parking lot was very full when we pulled in but there was no wait for a table. Our server came over quickly and took our drink orders. She returned promptly with beverages and took our breakfast orders. DH ordered eggs scrambled soft, bacon crispy, American fries, and rye toast. I am super picky about my scrambled eggs and never order eggs on a first visit (smart move on this trip!!!). I ordered a strawberry waffle with a side of crispy bacon. The restaurant was very crowded but our food came in a reasonable amount of time. My waffle was beautiful and tasted delicious. The server put my side of bacon down and asked if it needed to be cooked more...oh, brother, yes, please! No floppy bacon for this girl!! DHs eggs were a different matter! Soft scrambled means no scorchy brown crispiness on the eggs! He ate them but I could not even look at them. His bacon could have been crispier but it wasn't a floppy mess like mine had been, so he kept it. When she brought my bacon back, it had been dropped into the deep fryer. Perfect!!! Brown and crispy but not burned. Excellent. Food was reasonably priced. Service was excellent. We would go back but I won't be ordering eggs!! read more

I haven't been here in so long it was called Buzzie's the last time I came. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest, so I was pleasantly surprised that they were willing to make my breakfast burrito vegetarian, that it was delicious, and that the server made sure to keep our coffees topped up. My niece had a Mickey Mouse pancake the size of her head that was light and fluffy; my bro in law tried and enjoyed a breakfast pony (some concoction of muffin, hash browns, eggs, and gravy); and my sister had the slimline salad which she thought was just okay. But the prices are great, and the decorations on the walls are really kinda cool. 5/5 for me, with an acknowledgment that I've only had one experience here to draw from. read more

I love exploring old diners, and the drive from St. Louis City wasn't bad at all. The Highland Diner is packed with nostalgia, and the classic hamburger and fries were just right--exactly how they should be. I stopped her for lunch at 11:50 am on a Monday and about half of the tables were taken.  I was told to sit anywhere, and I picked a booth by the window.  My server came over right way and gave me a menu and took my drink order.  When she returned with my drink, I ordered the Southern Fried Steak special, it came with mashed potatoes and gravy.  It also came with a choice of soup or salad, and I chose navy bean soup. The soup arrived right away and was tasty, I was expecting more of a traditional ham and bean type soup, and it was heavy on the beans and the broth was really good.  There was meat in there as well. The Southern Fried Steak came out shortly thereafter and was really a good tender piece of meat.  The breading was terrific and overall, it had a good flavor.  It was served with peas and those were OK, most likely right from a can, but totally edible. My server was attentive and took very good care of me.  She was very friendly. I would definitely eat here again if I'm ever in the area.  Good food for a decent price, it's a good combination. read more

It's not bad, nor is that good. The service is fine, and the retro-ness of the Highland Diner is okay. Old photos grace the place, and the food prices are very reasonable. However, this is one of those "you get what you pay for..." places. While I do like that they have a full menu, their food is just average. I didn't care for the horseshoe, as something just didn't seem right about it. Turkey club was okay. Their breakfasts are alright - at least they serve it all the time. I haven't had their ice cream yet, as they do have a little booth that contains several flavors. They do sell Ski, which is a plus (hey, its by Clinton County - no excuses not to! lol) I have been here a few times with my parents. Each time I went there I knew it was a place suited towards (p.c. way of saying this?) elderly people, as they grew up with diners as part of their culture. A lot of seniors like to gather here and socialize for hours. Not really a family place, or for most people in the younger generations...if you know what I mean. read more

Sadly I have to give a bad review to this establishment. I understand that I ordered one dish saw it the chicken fried steak once burnt and I sent it back for something else like chicken fingers. They said that they're going to charge me for both which was not an issue. But the big issue was when my husband went to get me honey mustard from the counter, he was met with belligerence from the waitress and yelled at by the manager. He blatantly said that we complain every time we go there and we do not. I made another review on another website about this restaurant and I get a threatening message from said waitress to take it down. At this point I'm not going to take it down because I spoke the truth. Really decent greasy spoon diner with consistently decent grub. This place is a Highland, IL staple.

It's good for breakfast but that's the only meal we like there. I tried their Patty Melt and we weren't sure if the hamburger patty was even ground beef. The prices are good but the quality of the food is subpar in our opinion. We used to go there a lot when they first opened but I think in the struggle to keep it reasonable they've lowered the quality of the food. I would rather pay a little more to have better quality food. read more

Service was good, but the food was terrible. I know it's like the only diner in town, but the breakfast was not worth it. Biscuits and gravy had almost no sausage and little flavor. Asked for the hash browns crispy and got half of them still raw. Maybe they think that adding an extra egg to each plate will disguise the fact that the food is awful. read more
