I was very hungry, after a long day driving when I found this gem, while searching for quick food, in the area. I was pleasantly surprised by the eating area within the gas station, plenty of seating and you can grab snacks from the gas station. I really enjoyed the in house cut French fries. The Ruben was filling and seasoned well. If I am ever back in Pocahontas, IL, I will be sure to swing by and try the pork chop sandwich to taco salad. Perhaps a nice place for locals to chat, not so much for those passing through. Don't go here for a quick bite. Staff was pleasant but waitress forgot about us as she chatted with another table about her son's scholarship offers. 15 minutes later, another waitress reminded her we were waiting to order then she quickly came by to take our order. 20 minutes later, our food was on the counter, another 5 minutes for our waitress to finish her conversation with others and she delivered our meals. Wife ordered a pony shoe, aptly named with a puny hamburger patty beside too much bread covered with undercooked mushy fries topped with overly thick and overly abundant cheese sauce, probably from a can. I ordered a special, the roast beef sandwich with a side, substituted the fries for a half order of their famous onion rings for a $5 upcharge. The "roast beef" turned out to be deli sliced deli meat It wasn't bad, perhaps similar to an Arby's roast beef. The onion rings were generous, lightly breaded yet perhaps slightly undercooked, definitely not worth the $5 upcharge though. An hour later, we're out the door never to return. We stumbled upon Funderburk's Diner on our annual trip to Bennett Springs, Missouri from Columbus, Ohio to go fishing. I had an egg white western omelette that was filled with fresh vegetables and ham and cheese. The white toast was made from homemade bread and spread with just the right amount of creamery butter. My husband had pancakes, crispy bacon and over-medium eggs which were perfectly prepared. The coffee was tasty. Our waitress was on top of things-friendly and attentive. Really good. Almost ASTONISHINGLY good considering it's a diner in a gas station. Almost everything is home made and good although I had to add a bit of salt here and there. I would far rather add salt than have to send back over salted food. The fried chicken was nicely crisp but a bit tough like it wasn't marinated but had nice flavor. The greens beans were spectacular. The cole slaw was not to my taste but was fresh and hubs liked it. He wolfed down a slice of snickers pie but my blackberry cobbler was way too sweet. It was home made for sure though but less sugar would have let the tartness and acidity of those big fat berries shine through. Taylor was friendly and efficient and you cannot beat $1 beers. We will be back. UPDATE Onion rings are great and Taco salad was delicious. Breakfast all day and all night from open to close. Pleasant waitstaff. Fried chicken cooked to order with daily specials. A lovely stop from start to finish! We found this place by accident for the first time last year on a road trip (before my active Yelping days) and had such a great experience that we've talked about it multiple times since. This was another great stop! This place is close to the highway and easy to find, with plenty of parking. Both times, we were greeted when we came in and seated ourselves. We've also had great service on both occasions. Between visits, we've tried the taco salad, fried chicken, BLT, and whitefish - all were delicious! The fresh made tea is also excellent. Food was good. Service was great. 3 of us had breakfast and 90% was great. I had breakfast with hash browns and something wasn't right with them. Maybe they were freezer burned. Very reasonable prices.Yes it looks like an ordinary gas station but inside is one of the regions best kept secrets. Because of its simplicity and appearance I was hesitant to give it a full five stars but in truth.. We eat here so often and have never... Ever... Ever... had a negative experience. Massive menu and breakfast served all day. It is not the culinary experience you would drive a hundred an miles for, but don't let that stop you from checking it out if you are passing through. If you live in the area, you already know this. If you are just driving through with your family there is not a single restaurant that I would more highly recommend.
