A cute spot in Williamsburg for a solid matcha! As soon as you step in, it's decorated with tons of plants and feels so homey. I got the hojicha and my friend got the matcha. Both came unsweetened but the drink was so smooth and creamy that I didn't mind too much. PPL is a small and cozy Japanese cafe in Williamsburg. This is mostly a grab and go spot since there's very little seating. They specialize in coffee and matcha/hojicha drinks. I really enjoy their hojicha latte, hot or iced. They scoop of a lot of powder to make sure that the drink has a strong hojicha taste. The hippiest plant cafe in Williamsburg with its rustic design and retro atmosphere. Every nook and cranny of this cafe is filled with vintage furnishings and greenery. It is Japanese-owned and the three cheerful baristas I met are Japanese. PPL brewed brilliant matcha latte and didn't let me down. The menu has a variety of Japanese tea options like Genmai and Wakocha. For the tea lattes, I had a hard time deciding what to pick between Matcha, Hojicha and Sencha. I personally like the matcha latte more because of its bright and robust flavor. The hojicha latte might be better than most of the ones you could get at other cafes in nyc, but the flavor could be stronger. Both drinks had velvety and rich milk foam on top. They also won me over without sweetener. I was totally obsessed with the slight bitterness in their tea lattes. Just a reminder that there is only a bench of seating. This is a beautiful little cafe where they meticulously make your coffee. When you walk by, it's easy to miss. It's a little shop with high ceilings and tons of gorgeous plants everywhere. It breaks my heart to say this, but I found that the matcha here was on the weaker side. My hot matcha latte tasted more like milk than match, which does not make it a worthwhile visit for me. So good! We came by on a Saturday afternoon; a bit of a wait, but no more than 10 minutes. It's a really small shop with a few benches outside, but don't expect to come here and hang out. Really hipster interior though; lots of plants, older artifacts, and overall cool vibes. We got a matcha latte and a white sesame latte. The matcha is very good; extremely smooth and rich, well balanced with the milk, and overall has a fantastic taste and mouth feel. The white sesame latte is EVEN better though, and you absolutely have to try it if you like sesame. It's made with fresh sesame paste that you see them scoop out of a huge jar and whisk with the milk. This leads to such a strong sesame flavor, with a subtle sweetness, just enough to enhance the flavor. Really one of the best drinks I've had in recent times!! My one complaint (and this might be a bit on me) is that given how it's a paste, a ton of it settled at the bottom of the drink, and I felt like I missed out on an even stronger sesame flavor! This was supposedly a hidden gem w the best matcha. This is a very small store with a really pretty green/plant interior. Only about 2 people working, but when I came there was no line. Was doing a taste test of the best matcha lattes and this was high priority. Matcha was really good quality and not bitter, I do wish I asked for some natural sweetener in it (I'm not used to drinking it straight). Price point is higher here but you do automatically get a larger size compared to most since they only have 1 size. I feel as if this location is in not the best place - tucked with residential living. But it's on the corner so it's pretty easy to find.
