This guy Pete Rocheleau the owner of PR Woodworks is the best contractor I have ever dealt with. He rebuilt three decks at our home in Santa Cruz; one small, one medium, one very large and numerous stairs. He is very smart, he listens, he is strong, neat, honest, humble, hard working and extremely artistic. He is not cheap and delivers the best product money can buy. We gave him a vision, he gave us a plan! He does not bug you, makes decisions based on his deep experience around design, lightning and safety. Pete and his staff are awesome. We knew we wanted a deck, but that's all we knew. Pete was the first contractor to respond to my request for a quote and he came right out. He helped us figure out what we wanted - size, design, overall look, etc. We then used that idea to get quotes from two other contractors. Pete's bid was the lowest, and he was the contractor with whom we felt the most comfortable so we hired him. When it came time to start the work, Pete came back out to go over the plans again. We had changed our minds (several times) about whether we wanted the pergola against the house (there was an awning over the door originally and we debated whether to remove the awning). Pete went with the flow, provided his feedback, and helped us feel good about the final decision to remove the awning. Pete had a vacation planned for the first week of our project but he assured us that Vicente would be great and we would have no concerns. He was right - Vicente was awesome! He checked in with us regularly, asked us to make small decisions along the way, and pointed out potential challenges with the design and made recommendations for how to best work around the challenge (for instance, we have an access panel for our attic fan just above the pergola. Vicente worked around the access panel and changed out the hardware so that we could remove the access panel completely, rather than needing to leave enough room for the panel door to swing open. These little alterations made a huge difference. In total, Vicente did the following work for us: re-routed an irrigation line, routed electrical line to create an outlet on one of the pergola posts, built a deck and pergola, broke up and removed concrete which was then replaced with brick pavers, and they moved a raised garden bed from one part of the yard to another part of the yard. He very much had a "no problem, we can do that!" attitude throughout the project. I would hire Pete and his crew again in a heart beat. They have a good eye for design, a strong attention to detail, and are extremely customer service focused. On top of that, they're very reasonably priced and responsive to calls, emails, and texts. Like most of Santa Cruz contractors don't return calls even to say they are too busy for a new job. Must be out surfing.

I've only got two tools in my toolbox, WD-40 to make it go and duct tape to make it stop. Needless to say the thought of me building a deck is a bit scary. Luckily, Pete at PR Woodworks is competent at using other tools to get the job done...and none of them are duct tape. We hired Pete after and exhausting search for someone to build a entryway deck in front of our house, and I'm so happy we did! Pete is a master craftsman, he's creative, and he has integrity. If you've tried to work with other contractors in Santa Cruz, you'll know that's a tall order for most of them. We had to wait about six weeks for him to start the job, but that shows you that he's in demand. He's in demand because he's really good at what he does. We had a simple request, but Pete came back to us with an idea that went above and beyond what we thought possible. He arrived promptly on the date we agreed upon and got to work immediately pulling out old stair railings, and tearing down gates for replacement. I got daily updates from him via email with photos and a full report about the day's activities. In the end, Pete put more time, effort and materials into our deck- just because he thought the end product would look nicer. He didn't forward that cost on to us. He takes pride in his work and our new gates and front deck show that. We recently got several bids for a deck in our yard. PR woodworks was one of our bids. Pete showed up on time showed us his portfolio and got down to designing a beautiful addition to our home. After receiving all the bids Pete's stood out. He thought of some clever details to make the deck unique including a corner step and a sit bench. We had Pete build an attached sun room and laundry room. Pete was on-time and innovative, provided some very good ideas as the project went along. Pete did most assembly and painting at his shop, then brought the pieces to my home and assembled them there. All-in-all, the project went smoothly, and looks great. Pete and Vicente are like family to us after being at our home for several weeks to build a large deck. We handed Pete a photo of what we were hoping for and Pete and Vicente delivered a deck beyond our expectations. I gotta say that working with PR woodworks was an excellent experience from start to finish. In my limited experience in working with tradesmen in the San Lorenzo Valley, Pete stands out as the best by far. If he gives you a date and time to show up guess what - he shows up. Pete and his crew went way above and beyond his original bid for deck work (repair and partial replacement). He did not go over the estimated amount and completed the job by the estimated due date. Maybe the attributes I'm listing are what we consumers should all expect however I have found that it is really the exception and not the norm. After speaking with him and seeing some of his quality work, it was a simple decision to have him and his crew do the work. Pete is honest as the day is long, dependable and we got our pergola constructed much sooner than I expected. I got three bids and while they were all very close in price, I felt Pete was the the most knowledgeable of the three contractors. He was easy to work with and answered all of our questions. Like other reviews, very pleased. The quality of work is excellent - pretty obvious Pete and team (Vicente) know what they are doing, and the price is fair. With many contractors in Santa Cruz county you have problems in three areas 1) communication in general 2) showing up when they say they will 3) clearing out the materials after their done. Pete was good at communicating (email and phone), clear in letting me understand when they work, and when they would be back (you do have to have some flexibility with most contractors, they are working multiple jobs). Upon finishing, all waste wood, concrete, every little scrap - was removed (it's annoying when contractors only do 90%, but leave some stuff in the yard). A contractor to a large extent is a safety advisor as well - and Pete was spot-on, making sure we understood where he thought we had risks in areas that originally were not in scope.
