This place is alright. I wouldn't say it's the best food I've ever had, but it is definitely adequate and edible. I ordered a Little Italy Pasta for takeout and ate it at Northwestern's campus near the lake. It wasn't anything special - it was just your average pasta. There was nothing about the pasta that made it stand out over others. I will say, however, the prices are quite reasonable especially considering inflation these days. That is not an easy thing to find. Service was very good and my order was promptly ready when I arrived at the restaurant to pick up the food. Do note that you have to walk down some stairs to access this restaurant. Thankfully, there is an elevator available for those who need it. I'll be back here to try some of the other things Prairie Moon offers on their menu but I wouldn't say I'd come back here enthusiastic about it. read more

If you were expecting culinary excellence in the chicago land area it will surely not be found at a random bar on Sherman St in Evanston. Well for sure not here. Like you have never heard of anyone getting deathly ill from eating a bagel with chive cream cheese :) You might get better food if you walk out the door and make a right then you will see another place that is good. I have been to Prairie Moon only once before, because it was far from me and most other Northwestern students. But now that they have reopened at a new location right across from Whole Foods in downtown Evanston, it's a perfect, accessible spot for dinner. We came in for dinner on a Thursday evening and was seated right away. The place is huge and well-lit, and the tables are set up nicely and are spacious. I think the atmosphere is great for family meals. They also have a really nice and big bar; I will definitely have to check that out on a later night. My friend ordered the Martha's Vineyard Salad, and I ordered the the Moon Burger. There was a mix-up in the kitchen where my burger got sent to the wrong table, so it took some extra time for me to get my food. The waitress promptly let me know what happened and apologized, and she also took half off from the burger and didn't charge us for the coke my friend ordered. I really appreciated how she dealt with the situation. And I'd say the burger was worth the wait! read more

After visiting the Luthier (see other review), we stopped here on a recommendation. It was late afternoon, we were hungry and thirsty. We had pretty much the whole restaurant to ourselves. (There were a few others, but not many.) For some reason, they put us at a awkward table that sat between two dining rooms. I say awkward because they added a seat so four of us could sit there, and the seat blocked entry into the other room. We ordered beer - the menu was extensive, and the beers on tap were very good. But, I am not a daytime drinker and I'm afraid the beer made me tired. It was quite tasty though. For my lunch, I ordered their Prairie Moon burger. I comes on a bun with lettuce, tomato and onion and is served with fries. The burger is a mix up of various cuts of meat. I ordered it medium, and it came rare but I really didn't want to send it back. The server was nice. The beer was good, but I would say that overall, it was an average pub without anything that really made it stand out. Would I go back? Sure, but I think the overall experience (of course late afternoon) could have been more special. read more

We started coming to Prairie Moon when it was on Sherman and have since been enjoying its Chicago Ave. location. The menu is varied and there's always something for everyone. Every meal I've had is delicious and plentiful. The service is friendly and prompt, and the space is quiet enough for conversation. No loud music! We go there regularly and are recently also ordering carry-out. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. Crabcakes are great and so is the whitefish! We highly recommend it. read more

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night. My chimchurri steak was cold when it came out. Food also took about 1 hour and 15 minutes from when we ordered it to come out. The burger was A-okay. Appetizer for chips and salsa and guac was good. But overall the main courses were all just meh. Super salty too, I was chugging water the rest of the night. My family and I came on a Saturday night. First off, I appreciated the fact that they were very flexible with accommodating us even with us being pretty late for our reservation. Our waitress suggested trying the Vandermill cider, so I ordered that to drink and was pleased with it. Choosing a main entree was a little bit more difficult since there were many different items that sounded great to me. I ordered the IPA cod and chips for my meal. The batter on the fish had the perfect amount of crispiness and seasoning. The hand cut fries that came with the fish were also perfectly cooked as well. We were celebrating a couple of birthdays in our family, so we brought a birthday cake with us to eat after our meal. On the website, they do warn you that there is a $10 charge for bringing in outside desserts, but it's my personal pet peeve when restaurants do that since it's not like the waitress cuts and serves the cake (not our waitress at least). Despite my annoyance with their outside dessert rule, the meal, atmosphere, and service were all pretty good. This is somewhere I wouldn't mind coming to again when I am in the area. read more

Went on a Tuesday night. Food was great, service was very slow for only having outdoor seating. On top of the poor service, at the end of the meal, the server told us that their credit card machine was down and we could write down our card info on a piece of paper so they could charge us for the meal once their machines were back up and running. As a server myself, that's something that should be said at the beginning of service, not the very end. 3 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed the food. This review is for Sunday brunch. I hadn't been to PM's new location. It's in the basement where Dave's Italian Kitchen used to be. There's a long bar with several tvs and a large dining area. Our server took our order and one of our party asked about gluten-free bread options. The waitress never came back with an answer to this question. The "painted soup" was really weird and unappealing - nothing like what the menu described. The chicken andouille hash was overly seasoned with cumin and the andouille was almost certainly Polish sausage - not a speck of spice to it. The pastrami hash was very greasy with large chunks of pastrami that had knife marks in them but were not even partially cut up. The salads we ordered had old and wilted greens. However the real problem was the service. We waited 45 minutes for our order without any explanation of the delay. Someone who appeared to be with management came out after several complaints and inquiries to say that the kitchen was short staffed today. But that was only when the food arrived. We came here on a Sunday night with a large party and three kids. The waitstaff was prompt and attentive and checked in on us often. I got the cedar plank salmon which was delicious! The salmon had a great crust and the inside was flaky and succulent. The accompanying horseradish mashed potatoes are divine. I don't know what they do to them, but whatever it is, they're the creamiest, tastiest thing ever! My husband had the moon burger and said it was delish. He didn't care for the side of coleslaw which tasted too much like cumin and was also spicy which is strange flavor for coleslaw. We got the Texas sheetcake for dessert which was a bit dry and didn't have enough frosting. They have an extensive beer with several local brewery options. The event space, as mentioned in other reviews, is quite nice -- spacious and lowkey. My main complaint about the night was the lack of a divider between the event room and outside bar area. Their patrons could clearly see into our event and noise from the bar interfered with some of our programming. Otherwise, the food was on par and service smooth throughout the night. I've been to Prairie Moon a bunch (don't let the one sole check-in fool ya') and have always enjoyed drinking beer there. Prairie's beer list is unsurpassed in Evanston, and the bartenders are only too happy to let you sample whatever you like. This is a huge place, and the rooms sometimes don't fit together. I dig the big iron letters in the middle dining room that spell RESTAURANT. The back bar is very relaxed and small, with kind of a Margaritaville vibe. It leads to the patio, and has a pool table and dart board as well. The space for me, is a bit "off", so this is more like 3.5 stars rounded up because I'm sooooooo glad it's not some lame chain "Irish" bar. read more

$4 Founders dry-hopped pale ale. Can't beat that. On my second visit ever to Prairie Moon I discovered that there's more than just the front bar and dining area- this place is hidden huge. With an additional dining room behind the obvious dining and bar area and then another bar in back with enormous vintage light-up signs and a second smaller with and equally as impressive beer and spirits list and a pool table. From there, you can head to an outdoor patio to the left or to the dart room on the right and then into an even larger dining room. HUGE. Not quite a Target, but bigger than a Walgreens and better, obviously, because there's way more booze at Prairie Moon and a great place to meet up with a cornucopia's worth of friends. Also, they have a crab hat. Oh, and service is friendly and the food, while I've yet to have it, smells delicious. I want those mussels and frites... but mostly that crab hat. That I need. read more

I used grub hub for some carryout dinner from Prairie Moon recently. BBQ seemed like a safe option, so I went with the combo pulled pork and beef brisket. For my sides I ordered polenta fries and broccoli. I kept my eye on the grub hub website, hitting refresh now and then to see the status of my order. At the hour mark I got frustrated and headed out to the restaurant to see what was up. It was a quiet week-night, BBQ is already pre-cooked and it shouldn't have been such a long wait. When I arrived, there was my bag of food, sitting on the bar counter. Clearly the kitchen forgot to push whatever grub hub button they are supposed to push to let the customer know it was done. Bummer because my food ended up being cold. Thankfully I had a microwave in my hotel room! The brisket was dry, the pulled pork was great and the polenta fries were some of the saltiest food stuffs I've been served in recent memory. I LOVE this place! I often forget about it and then I'm so delighted when I order from there again. They are so warm and friendly and willing to work with getting things GF if possible. For example, we ordered their mother's day brunch this last year, and we delivered a loaf of GF bread and they made the french toast GF. I can't tell you the last time I had french toast from a restaurant. When I called about something they had missed in our order, they sent someone to deliver it to us right away. I was brainstorming ideas for an early Friday-evening dinner and probably wouldn't have thought of this place if a friend hadn't planted it in my ear. I had originally intended to eat light, but in the meantime I suffered a slight medical trauma, and to make myself feel better, I decided to set myself up in a corner of the second dining room and eat like a king. My table was right by a large open window, so it sort of felt close to eating on a veranda rather than fully outside (the best of both worlds, is what I am trying to say). The beer list is impressive...really impressive. I'm sorry that I wasn't aware of this all these years. It's by far the best beer selection in Evanston; in fact, it might be a bigger variety than all the other bars put together. I was finally able to try the Stone Arrogant Bastard (meh) but they have a few other of my very favorites, such as Scrimshaw Pilsner (a great meal beer). Sadly, after I had eaten, I was informed that they have switched out the New Holland Dragon's Milk for Old Rasputin. POOR CHOICE. Honestly, the Dragon's Milk is half the reason that I ate there. The food was up and down. I ordered four dishes and asked to have them paired in two courses. First course: fish chowder and mushroom quesadillas. Both dishes very good. The fish chowder had potatoes and corn, some kind of fish and I think shrimp too, all in a lightish creamy broth with a low-level spicy heat. One of the best soups that I have eaten recently. Quesadillas are so pedestrian that I rarely order them, but these ones had some spinach and plenty of quality mushrooms. They tasted great on their own, but came with a salsa trio: fresh pico de gallo (by far the best), watery medium-heat salsa, and chipotle crema, of which I tasted a tiny it and then let sit. Second course: Guacamole and calamari. Letdown. The guacamole was smooth and fresh, but bland, lacking enough onion and jalapeno. The chips were those thick, flaky types, a little on the greasy side but generally good. The calamari was just a failure. I took one bite and thought, "Wha...KFC?!?" The breading was so heavy, dark, and seasoned that it has to be a deliberate invocation of the Colonel's original recipe. Homage? Ironic statement? Practical joke? Blech in any case. I could barely even tell what kind of meat was under that thick, cardiologist-enriching shell. Calamari cannot stand a heavy treatment. It needs a light batter and a quick pan-fry. This stuff looked, felt, and tasted as if it had been deep-fried within an inch of its squiggly little life. Then they threw some shredded parmesan on top! TOO HEAVY. I am keeping them at three stars because of the calamari and the Dragon's Milk. However, yesterday's dinner dissolved my years-long bias, so now I would be willing to return and explore more of their large menu and indulge in that wonderful beer list. read more

I came here with some other Yelpers to drink until last call because we felt that we weren't drunk enough from all the wine we drank at the elite event we had attended earlier in the evening and found out that we don't get drunk... we get AWESOME! We had a great time here. Of course an awesome group of people like us would have a great time anywhere, but we just so happened to sit at the coolest spot in the house. Our table was right next to this bookshelf with all sorts of randomness in it. It had books like, "Beer Is The Answer" and "You Should Have Babies", photo albums with some funny pictures that look like they're from the 80's, a creepy looking monkey, and some games. We played Taboo, and I must say, drunken Taboo is waaaaaayyyyy better than sober Taboo. Oh yeah, there was also a crown... and it had CRAB LEGS! I agree with Sean D., this was the coolest thing there. We all ended up taking pics of each of us rockin the crown. The Crab Leg Crown was definitely the highlight of our late night shenanigans! Overall, I'd have to say that I like this place. I may not be a beer expert, but I was with a bunch of beer connoisseurs and they were quite impressed with the selection of beer at this establishment. Our server was friendly and knew what to recommend based the types of beer I like. I rarely ever give places 5 stars but Prairie Moon was quiet convincing. Been here a couple times now, usually for friends' gatherings and never stepped out of this place disappointed, nor incredibly drunk off cheap alcohol. You HAVE to order the North End Calamari. It's a little over $10 but definitely something worth sharing (or not). It's pretty amazing. Not your ordinary calamari because it's friend with a light parmesan crust then topped with balsamic, tomato-basil relish and cocktail sauce. I also highly recommend trying beers from their beer list. My personal faves are the Big Sky $3.50/pint and Witterkerke Belgian White $4.50/glass (can you tell what kind of beers I like?). Avoid the burger (nothing special) and the bruschetta (a little too soggy) though. Great place for groups. If it's summertime, try to get dibs on the patio. In full disclosure, Prairie Moon is owned by the same people as Wheatberry (see previous review), which is located near my former home in Indiana. I was near destined to love this place. And I do. Prairie Moon features a strong selection of craft beer, including some that are harder to find (Three Floyd's Apocalypse Cow, Dogfish Head Chateau Jiahu). They also showcase the breadth of some regional breweries, like Tyranena out of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, by devoting several taps at once to their beers. We sat at the bar - as we do - and I immediately ordered a flight of four beers. My husband ordered a dry-hopped pale ale from Founders. As we browsed the food menu, I was pleased to see some of my favorites from Wheatberry on this menu, but also plenty of other options to try. I settled on the Redbud barbecue chicken salad - with big chunks of avocado and topped with fresh tortilla strips, it was perfect. They served our meals with a small loaf of fresh bread. Service was great - they checked in frequently to see if we need more beer or water. A fun fact about Praire Moon is that they play host to the Evanston Home Brew Club on the third Thursday of each month. If you like local, craft beer or are a homebrewer, it's worth learning more about. read more

I have been here before for lunch awhile back. And now it's in their new location as of August. Which is the old Dave's Italian Kitchen which I really do miss since it's closure. Mostly because it was BYOB. The food here today for an early dinner was pretty good as I had a grilled chicken salad. My husband had the shrimp poor boy. I would say the server we had was not stellar. Which the reason I gave it three stars. We all ordered a cocktail, and despite the fact the restaurant was not that busy it seemed to take her quite awhile to get everyone served. Overall, the food is solid given what we ordered. We had a large group. Two others ordered the crab cakes which were a hit. I would say overall in downtown Evanston, if you're looking for a good meal. Prairie Moon does not disappoint. On our way home from an evening out with friends last night, we decided to stop at Prairie Moon to grab a dessert and a drink. It was below zero so half of us wanted a warm drink. The waiter said the only warm drinks they had were a Hot Toddy or an Irish Coffee. My sister got a Hot Toddy and I didn't really want anything but, at the last minute, said I'd have an Irish Coffee. Why not, right? Live a little. When he brought the drinks, mine appeared to be just black coffee. I looked at it quizzically and thought to myself, "Oh, man. I thought Irish Coffee was something else." I don't drink a whole lot and pretty much never order an Irish Coffee. So maybe I was just very confused. But then my friend stopped the waiter and said, "That's an Irish Coffee?" And he said, "We make our Irish Coffee with just coffee and whiskey." (Side note: One time, my boss asked me why I wasn't working and I said, "Well, I do my work by surfing Facebook and doing my online grocery order." It didn't go over well) My friend replied, "But... isn't it supposed to have...cream and...you know...be an Irish Coffee?" He said he could go put some whipped cream on it but he also kinda laughed as he said it and I didn't want to feel like an idiot. Also - whipped cream isn't really right either. He said he could put some Bailey's in it. I said ok. He came back with a shot of Bailey's and I put it in my drink but that just made it only mildly drinkable. Lots of alcohol, bitter, no cream or sugar. I drank half of it so that I had something to do but it didn't taste good. I thought maybe I was confused about Irish Coffee but I came home and googled it and every single Irish Coffee recipe calls for coffee, whiskey, brown sugar, and cream. Every single one. And there are a lot. So Prairie Moon doesn't serve Irish Coffee. Because there is an actual recipe for that drink. They serve Whiskey Coffee. And that's fine. But that's not what he told me they had. It's like setting my steak in front of me and saying, "Oh, we make our steak with tofu." That's fine. But call it tofu. So then I thought that maybe their gimmick was that they just called everything by the wrong name. Because the peach cobbler wasn't peach cobbler. It was a cake with peach compote underneath. It tasted fine. But it wasn't cobbler. So, that could be a THING, right? And people could come and think it is so funny to see what they get when they order something standard. And people would post photos online and be all like, "Look! I ordered the pasta but I got fruit salad and a dinner roll! Hilarious!!" But my daughter's tea was totally just tea. Which is great since that's what she wanted but a complete disappointment if it should have been a beaker of ground salmon or a raspberry milkshake. (I would mention here that there is nary a Prairie nor a Moon in the entire establishment so if they wanted to adopt this gimmick officially, they won't have to change their name). Anyhoo, when the bill came, my drink that wasn't an Irish Coffee cost $15.50. That's $7 for the whiskey, $8 for the Bailey's, and .50 for the coffee. Nearly half the bill. That's amazing. I had thought that I would take $8 worth of mints on the way out to help even out the expenditure but the mints tasted like mint and that just made me feel disappointed that they couldn't stick with their theme. Still, I enjoyed writing this review and that makes up for about $2.50 of that enormous drink bill. I feel less cheated now. If they want to pay me $6 for the new gimmick idea, Venmo is fine. read more
