In looking for a company to paint the trim of the outside of our home, we were referred to Preferred Painting. 03/04/24 Received quote/contract with details - some details standard and some specific to our job. We have a ranch home, our paint job excludes door, garage door and shutters, includes only wood trim. 03/06/24 Issued check for $500.00 deposit to secure job 04/25/24 Deposit check was cashed While the weather prolonged the start of our job, Preferred Painting failed to touch base with us. My husband had to reach out and find out when we were going to be 'on the schedule'. We had finally reached a point where we were told the power washing would be done, it may be Thurs, July 25th or Friday, July 26th. That changed to Friday, possibly Sat. Friday, July 26th at nearly 6:00 PM Abraham arrived to power wash. 06/26/24 power washing of the trim was done, completed in less than an hour and a half. The siding was NOT power-washed even though we agreed to the extra charge for it to be done. We were told the crew would be at our home at 7:00 AM the next morning to start painting. 06/27/24 one guy showed up by 7:00 AM, a second guy showed up a couple hours later and Abraham a number of hours after that. Painting started, but job not finished. Before leaving, Abraham informed my husband that a second coat of paint was needed in certain areas of the trim, as more paint came off during prepping and scraping than anticipated, and there may be an additional charge. Derrick then texted and advised us of the additional charge. The amount specified seemed high. I presented some facts to Derrick, about the situation and his crew, and asked him to consider the same when adding the additional fee. I was not asking him to not charge us, I was asking him to consider all that had already happened when coming up with the amount of the additional charge. Derrick stated the amount he told us is his standard amount and since we were at an impasse, he would have his guys come back to drop off the paint and we could finish the job ourselves. My husband then talked more with Derrick, they came to an agreement on an additional cost and Derrick confirmed Preferred Painting would be completing the job they started. Derrick reached back out and shared his appreciation of the talk. Rain again caused delay. 07/30/24 we were notified that another job had to be finished over the next couple of days so the crew would be back on Friday. 08/02/24 Abraham and another guy arrived by 7:00 AM. It was clear that Derrick had spoken with his crew, as Abraham was rude and unprofessional. The guys were gone around 9:00 AM. Abraham did not confirm that additional work was to be done or that the job had been completed. Abraham did NOT do a final walk through, he did not advise me they were leaving - they simply left a can of leftover paint at the front door and disappeared. From our experience with Preferred Painting, the contract is a mere formality and not truly followed. The standard portion of the agreement requests that someone be home at the start of the job for walk through before the work begins, and at the end of the job for a walk through to confirm completion. In checking the job, we found some areas that were very poorly done. Derrick was notified of his crew simply leaving and was sent some pictures of the unacceptable work. We asked Derrick to come check the result. 08/06/24 Derrick came to walk through; we pointed out that the power washing had not been done as it should have been done (entire home). We also pointed out the areas of the trim where work was not completed. Derrick agreed to have his guys come back to finish up. Derrick also agreed to credit us a portion of the charge for the power washing as it was not completed as expected. 08/09/24 Followed up with Derrick to find out when someone was going to complete our paint job. He informed us that Abraham was working in the city and finishing Monday. Here we are again, being delayed for a different job. 08/13/24 Derrick informed us he will be sending out another one of his guys. 08/20/24 Derrick confirmed Jose will be coming to finish painting on 08/21/24. 08/21/24 Jose showed up on time, assessed all that needed to be done and completed the job. Jose was friendly and thorough, he also confirmed completion of the painting. Walk through was completed and final payment was issued. No one has control of the weather, but the fact that our job was put on hold so the crew can complete other jobs was not understood. Preferred Painting left us to believe that we were less important than their other jobs. Derrick reached out to confirm completion and apologized for the delays. While the end result is satisfactory, it was discouraging that we were not valued as a customer. read more

Update 10/19 - Preferred painting finished up the work they had a agreed to. First off, it should be said that prior to resorting to a negative review, I've been trying to get Derrick to take care of finishing work from July and this is my last ditch effort. The quality of the work that was done was very good, I have no issues with that but I do have issues that my master bathroom ceiling is not finished yet and he's been extremely slow to resolve this. Derrick has been responding to my text but only when I reach out to him and I've been doing that since July. Maybe just hoping that I would forget about it, which I probably would've if it wasn't for my wife asking me when is this getting fixed everyday. A little bit about the process. I never received a formal quote because of these high reviews on yelp but I should've had him come here and do it but this was a new house purchase and I was juggling two homes. Derrick made it easy because he quoted off of pictures and didn't need to meet. Abraham was the one who managed the work and was thorough, but they took a lot longer than expected because some crew members didn't show up - it happens. I had a vanity painted in the wrong color and my large master bathroom ceiling was never redone. The vanity might be a miscommunication so I can deal with that but the ceiling is different. Derrick never came to our house to do a final walk through and I shouldn't have payed him without seeing it, however, my daughter was in the hospital (shot him a text proving it) and couldn't do a final walk through so sent $5,600. Once again, had no reason not to trust it wouldn't get resolved but that's on me and I also didn't want his crew members not to get paid as they rely on that. This is where things got bad as Derrick never once came to my house to review the work that was done, Abraham was his eyes and ears. He has responded but there has been no actions. Now after this review, he could tell me just to pound sand for a negative review but I think this is a legitimate reason to complain and people should know. I'm not saying the company is bad at all and this probably an outlier based on the previous reviews but not stepping up to make things right is how I just companies since things won't always go as planned. He agreed it needed to be done from the attached text but hasn't and I shouldn't have to wait months and he should fit me in. At this point, I'm probably going to have to get it done from someone else and incur more cost. My credit card company is going to put a small hold but probably not worth him even coming back out. We used them for painting the interior of our entire house. They were the lowest bid of 5 and performed excellently. They removed fixtures, painted behind appliances, painted all ceilings, did multiple coats, paid attention to details and edges. The teams were so professional and efficient. Only one minor concern: a couple of drip spots were not reported and left marks and hard spots on carpet. Again, no big deal... but could be an improvement. Otherwise, we plan on hiring them again when the time comes for the downstairs. We relocated to the area and thought we had a contractor/painter lined up to paint our interior two weeks before we moved in...however, he cancelled last minute, on the weekend before he was supposed to start!!! After getting no where with a few realtor recommendations, I scoured Yelp for painters with a lot of good reviews. I left many voice mails and only heard back from a handful, one of which was Preferred Painting. I spoke with Derrick on a Tuesday, he quickly delivered a quote on Wednesday and we hired Preferred that day. His pricing was fair and in line with other quotes I received. Abraham was the onsite supervisor and he was awesome! He and his crew were very professional and did an excellent job. Preferred Painting was able to get our first and second floor walls, a whole second floor of trim, closets and a couple of ceilings painted before we moved in and before carpeting was installed. Preferred Painting gets an A+ for communication. Throughout the painting job, Derrick was lightning fast to respond to my text messages. He even contacted me to let me know that he was going out of town for the weekend, where cell service wasn't great, in case anything came up. We also worked out a deal where the painters will come back to do touch ups from the move in and from the nicks that occurred from the carpet installers. November 10, we hired Derrick to do a simple one-day repair to our ceiling and explained we needed it done by Christmas.  November 25, I receive an out of the blue text that said: "do you have the wall paint?" I thought he may have texted the wrong person since we are doing the ceiling, but he explained we will need it. I said if he needs to come out now, we can just do the painting. I really need him to repair the ceiling. He never scheduled.  December 15 and the job still isn't done. I contacted him and asked if he was planning to come out. He said, "Yes... I will get a day this week. OK"  December 20 and we are four days away from Christmas. Job isn't done. I fired him.  Obviously he didn't want the job, but he should have told me. Instead, he strung us along for 1 1/2 months. We wasted time that we could have used to hire a contractor that actually wants the job. I still haven't heard from him since the 15th. We are stuck with a ceiling that needs repair, Christmas is 4 days away, and I need to put everything back into the room that I had cleared out for him. If he feels he doesn't need your job, he won't expend the energy to simply let you know. read more

Hired for two jobs. Exterior painting was solid, but my deck (not part of the job) was a disaster. Paint everywhere, never cleaned. Second job was cabinets. Brand new oven covered in overspray. Hardwood floors were even worse. Crew came back to fix twice, each time made something worse. The overspray in my garage cannot be described. Every tool, every item. Countless items ruined or painted on. Derrick went radio silent for six months, then offered to fix everything. Months after we paid others to fix it. We were able to add two more rooms to the job after they started and it wasn't a problem. They went above and beyond moving and protecting our personal possessions. No paint drops were spilled and all the cabinets, curtains, and power sockets were paint free. The furniture was moved back to the original spots to the point where my son didn't have even notice they'd been moved in the first place. Picture nails were in the original spots and we were able to rehang them without a problem (they couldn't hang them because the paint was still wet). communication was the worst. i was chasing derrick for months. any followup from him was rare. finally when the paint job was scheduled i came outside to take a look at their work. they just arrived and within 20 min they were already painting the exterior. well i thought how the heck is that possible if they were supposed to clean and powerwash first. well..they did not. they started painting right over all the dirt and grime that was on the exterior. i stopped them and questioned their work. they even admitted it was the wrong way to do the job. so i asked them if you know its wrong why would you do it? they stated derrick told them NOT to wash it down. i advised them the powerwash was part of the deal. the painter then showed me a text msg derrick sent him to NOT powerwash. i had them call derrick immediately and got on the phone with him. they went ahead and powerwashed. after seeing them finish the painting there were so many missed spots and i had to point them out. i asked derrick, who says this is under warranty, to send guys back. its been awhile now since the job, guys never showed up again, and if communication was how it was back then since this was less than a year ago...i would rather not even try to chase them down. go with a different painter and save yourself the headache. read more
