After attending a buddy-day class, her 8-year-old brother decided to join her, with the goal of earning a first-degree black belt by the age of 11. Master Kim, Mrs. Master Kim, and the instructors put a lot of effort into teaching the kids, especially those who attend religiously, with all they need to progress and learn their forms, their kicks, blocks, and sparring. And the kids get a good workout also. We've found the Kims and all the instructors to be the utmost of caring and respectful.

Well time has come to move and we are told "no refund". The school has gone downhill the past year and not nearly what it was when she started. Why not aspire to be a noble Samurai? What would Confucius say? After some talking, I discovered that what he really wanted was to be a Ninjago. Whew! Now, this a modern science problem--how to turn a kid into a Lego. The suburban mom in me combed the Internet for the perfect ninja birthday party theme. We came upon this location and I called to schedule a birthday party. I spoke with Martin, who was very helpful. He gave me a tour of their large, clean space and help me customize the birthday package. He was extremely helpful. We decided to have a bounce castle to pen the kids as guest were arriving. After all the kids have arrived, Martin and his team started with a short safety course to use when being approached by strangers. Next, swords were brought out and the little ninjas were trained in Kendo. Finally, they got to put on headgear and there was a sword fighting tournament. The parents and I were amazed at how Martin was able to capture and hold a bunch of 5-8yr olds attention for over and hour. We were really impressed and the kids are still talking about the party a week later! The most memorable part for my son was the fact that got to be the co-teacher and show off his moves by breaking a wooden board. He was very proud! Sword training-complete! Now, how am I going to find a place that teaches the ninja art of poisoning?

I would trust these guys with my child, my body, and my soul. Oh wait. I already do…read more Besides TKD, the school offers an all-ages Brazilian jiu jitsu class. My son (age 10) does TKD only. I (age 50) do both. We recommend the school for those in the Lake Travis area and beyond. We used to travel nearly an hour each way to get here, four days a week. Totally worth it. Highly skilled (and ranked) instructors here are also compassionate and tuned to every student's individual abilities. They know and greet students (and parents!) by name. They don't ask for more than they know you can do--and they turn out to be right in knowing you can do a lot. You work and sweat for the progress you make, which gives you honest pride in each belt you earn. The atmosphere is totally supportive and respectful, from instructors and other students alike. I especially admire how comfortable the older teen students are with each other, male and female. Both my 10-year-old son and I are amazed at what we have learned out on the mat. Beyond new physical abilities and conditioning, I benefit all day, every day from the mentality and strategy we learn. Impossible to imagine a better place to study martial arts. It is a very demanding but super fun and rewarding part of our lives.

My son has been in the after school program for a while now…read more.. Recently he jumped over a belt and is now a 2nd degree red belt... one level away from a black belt! Many years ago when we joined rise I would have never guessed how he would take to the program. I have to give credit to the school, the instructors, and their core teachings! They know how to teach... serious and solid but also know when to have fun and keep it light. I've watched my son grow up a lot in these classes... I'm very proud of the young man he is becoming and again I have to say... thank you Rise!

Yet he does so extremely well adapting with his class. THE INSTRUCTORS ARE AMAZING!! They are so kind and attentive. He comes out of class with such a strong heart. He is learning so many things at once and I'm so proud of him. I would 10/10 recommend this place to anyone who wants an actual martial arts training/ experience. My son goes twice a week. The instructors are very good. They are very kid friendly and the children seem to really enjoy…read morethe classes. The only speed bump i encountered is with the cancellation policy. My child attended two classes and chose not to continue to go. Please be aware of the fine print if your children are unwilling or unable to attend. I was told that the plan is a month to month, but the cancellation policy requires you to pay at the very least for two months (62 day notice of intent to cancel). While this is covered while covering the agreement with the owner, it was not entirely clear to me of this catch. Should your children not be able to attend but one or two classes you are still required to pay for two months at a minimum. MY child attended two classes and bc of the 62 day notice of cancellation i have to pay $280. The classes are really good, but not $140 per class good. The instructors are passionate and knowledgeable and they really have a connection with the kids. The contract needs detailed and clear explanation and I feel that if your kids love the first class, which they certainly will, you'll certainly sign up. Once that happens you are on the hook for two months regardless of the ability to attend another class after that one. Just sign the "month-to-month" agreement knowing that it is going to cost you two months from the date that you notify them.

I've been going to this school for about three years, since the "bad old days." (just kidding)…read more So they just moved out of the room they were renting at the AACC, the one where you had to be careful not to crash into the glass display cases and the kids would track dirt on the floor so during class your shoes couldn't grip. The new location is fantastic! Easily triple the amount of room we had at the AACC and we don't have to worry about banging into anything breakable now. The ceiling is much higher so I don't worry so much about hitting it when I practice staff forms. There are also now stretch bars along the back wall and storage for all the things we didn't use to be able to have before: kick shields, targets, etc. And now that we're not on the tile anymore its a lot less intimidating to practice jumping techniques and break falls in the advanced and contemporary classes. The instruction is still the same as always. The material comes from Shi Xing Ying, a Shaolin Temple trained monk who now lives in Houston. The Austin school is taught by his student, Scott Pettengill, and Austin students who visit Houston can attend class there with the monk at no extra charge. I've mainly focused on the Contemporary Wushu they teach there. The only other game in town for Contemporary Wushu, I think, is David Scott's school and the UT Wushu club if you're a student there. Chris Tong (studied under Jeff Bolts, Madame Wang Jurong, and the monk Shi Xing Ying) is the contemporary wushu coach at ISWCATX and for the UT wushu club. If you come and take traditional classes he's a steal at just $30 in addition to the regular tuition, but if you take only the contemporary classes the rates are still more than competitive (especially considering how few people teach true contemporary) with everything else out there. His classes are still fairly small, I guess because they start later--around 7pm-- which makes it even more of a bargain since they end up almost being private lessons. Although I guess if I write this and it sounds inviting then maybe they won't be so small and then if I want a private I'd actually have to pay for it...but the more the merrier? I used to feel like such a klutz as a kid, I was a terrible basketball player, but I've developed so much more balance and coordination since taking Kung Fu, especially the contemporary class. I'm always spent and exhausted by the end of class. Its a great workout in a relaxed atmosphere from instructors whose pedigree can't be questioned.

We tried another school before and the instructor never spent much time helping the kids who weren't doing certain forms or movements right how to do them properly. The instructors here will work with a student one-on-one if they see that the kid is struggling with something. They are patient but ask the kids for their efforts. They are strict with the kids (no goofing off!) but are friendly and fun at the same time. It's a very low key operation at a reasonable price. The instructor/student ratio can vary but most of the time it's 3-5 students per instructor.

We love the program here. Our son started in the Dragon program and he did really well. They let…read morethe kids go and advance at their own rate through repetitious skill drills that include punching, kicking, blocking, self defense, and eventually sparring. Our son also did XPT and with that program he also did weapons drills and gymnastics. He really enjoys it. The teachers and instructors for the dragon program and really nice and keep the class moving so the kids don't get bored and continue learning. Now that our son is a color belt, the class is a bit longer and the program is much more structured and discipline which he is responding very well to. All staff, not just the instructors are very nice. They have bring a friend events and parties as well.
