BEST KEPT SECRET?? Not really. (A reference to my 2023 posting)…read more After almost 3 years of my high school age son taking lessons here he was suddenly and unexpectedly placed into a class of about 18 children about 6-7 years old. When I spoke with the owner about it that same day, and again with my wife and I the next morning (today) we asked that our 15-year old son be moved back into a class that was age appropriate. Our son is 6 feet tall and 190 lb by the way. When the facility owner continued to try to justify the new program that resulted in this and repeatedly REFFUSED to place him back into his old age appropriate class (that was also training that same day) we told the owner we would have pull him from the class if he could not train and attend his normal practices WITH HIS OWN AGE GROUP, The owner responded by saying, "Then pull him from the program". So we in fact did that just moments ago. I have more I could, say but will reserve those negative concerns as I don't want to pile on, but clearly have an overall different opinion of this venue now that I have been able to see things over a longer course of time. Not to mention the other parental stories I have heard. Thus, I felt the need to clarify my first posting, which has obviously changed. The positive....., the facility is nice! My daughter is still enjoying her classes as a blue belt and just moved up to the Elite Leadership program where there is a formal plan in place for her to earn her junior black belt (if she sticks with the program) by the time she is 12-in about 3 more years. For comparison's sake, you need to be a minimum of about 16 y/o with maximum proficiency (on demand) in a documented list of about 150 skills, forms and techniques to earn an adult black belt in Kenpo Karate in this program. I have seen other programs advertised locally where you receive a black belt in 3 years. I have a hard time believing that any child would have the life-skills to achieve such a lofty goal especially after seeing the work that everyone puts in here. The students work hard because things aren't dumbed down for them and they like the challenge, the instructors push in a healthy way while holding everyone accountable for strong, technically proficient techniques while at the same time making things fun.

My kids love coming to Karate class every week. They experience a focused class, personalized…read moreinstruction, a most importantly, age appropriate support for their skill level. It is a mixed age class - so if your child is coming in as a young or first time student with no experience, or if you have a repeat student who is building on skills learned, the instructors are always supportive and helps each child work on their skill. The Pre Karate class is month to month, reasonably priced, and no contracts which was very important to us. It is the number one reason why we picked Oviedo Karate Club (Many parents don't realize that they have a no-contract option, which is really all that the other martial arts centers offer. I've heard many complaints regarding contracts if you fail to commit, have a schedule conflict, etc. It was a nightmare we were so happy to learn that we did not have to experience! Not to mention what the other studios charge monthly - it's unreachable for many who want to experience karate but probably are unwilling to spend that much if you don't know your child likes karate. That's why we tried it and we stayed!) I think parents would be surprised to see that a karate class can be child-centered and positive. She focuses on calming the body to focus, listening, practice, learning about Japanese traditions & terminology and the lessons never discuss "fighting another person" or "competition" or "violence." Our class does not require a belt ranking. I am glad we found the Oviedo Karate Club. It's currently at Riverside Park in Oviedo which is convenient us. We love coming here for the exercise and skill.

Be prepared to sweat and train hard. Within the few months that I have been here, I have gotten into better shape and have learned a lot. You will learn Shotokan katas (forms), practice in kumite (sparring), as well as physical strength training. There are no contracts here and no upgrades to get into higher level classes like some other places in the area charge. As an adult, I can only speak of my experience in the evening adult class, which includes some younger students as well. All students are taught the same material regardless of belt rank, with the exception of higher level katas which are taught to higher ranking belts, although lower level belts can watch and learn. If I had to be super critical, my one tiny criticism is that this dojo is a bit smaller in size compared to others, but that hasn't been a problem in training.
