I am a Type 1 diabetic with excellent control of my diabetes and no eye problems or diabetic retinopathy. I get an annual eye exam simply as a preventive measure. During my first visit, I was surprised to receive an additional $178 charged to my insurance because my visit was billed as a medical office evaluation (CPT 99214). I paid it, but before my second annual exam I made it very clear that I only wanted my routine annual eye exam billed and did not want any additional charges if nothing outside of a normal exam was being performed. At my second visit, I told the front desk, the technician, and the checkout desk the exact same thing. Every person assured me to let the staff know, which I did--three separate times. Despite that, I received the exact same $178 charge again. When I called to question the bill, I spent about 15 minutes on the phone and was transferred four times before anyone could explain it. I was ultimately told that my doctor bills all diabetic patients using CPT 99214 because it is considered a medical evaluation, even when nothing beyond a routine annual eye exam is ever being performed. I explained that I had specifically asked beforehand to avoid any unexpected charges, but I was told the doctor would not review or change the coding. My frustration is not just the charge itself. It's that I repeatedly raised this concern before the appointment and was never told that I would still be billed this way regardless. Had someone simply explained that the office's policy is to bill every diabetic patient with CPT 99214, I could have chosen another provider before incurring the charge. If you have diabetes, I strongly recommend clarifying what you will be charged for before making an appointment. Better yet, skip this office entirely because if an issue arises, the staff will not work with you to resolve it. I am a long-term wearer (10+ years) of multi focal specialty contact lens. Initially, it took several appointments and many, many contacts to find the right fit, but my previous optometrist was a rock star at working though this process. And there was no upchage for this service. I recently moved to Baldwin county and needed to replace the contacts. So in doing my research for someone specializing in these types of contacts, I found Dr. Ferris-Metzger at Premier Medical in Daphne. The appointment went well and I provided Dr Ferris-Metzger with my previous contact vials which has all the measurements and sizing for the fit of the specialty lenses. I just needed to know if any of my distance / up close vision had changed and check the health of my eyes. Fast forward 4 weeks to when the lenses arrived and I get an invoice for 3x what Ive historically paid for the lenses (they are sold as 2 pairs to change out after 6 months of wear). I thought there has to be a mistake... the wrong type of lens was ordered or the technician wrongly ordered "2" sets (meaning 4 pair). I communicated my concerns with Dr Ferris-Metzger's technician and her response basically explaining to me how the lenses work, how they are sold and that this was the price. No new information to me and no answers to the questions I had proposed. At this point, I contacted my previous optometrist 4 hours away, to inquire about any price increases. They confirmed the price was what I'd paid previously (which was $600 less than Premier Medical) After that, I tried calling a business manager and was put in touch with the contact lens person. This went the same way as the previous conversations. No one appears to be interested in my honest attempt to understand the price difference at this place. And to add insult to injury, Dr Ferris-Metger had the contact lens associate inform me that I would be charged a contact fitting fee of $40 which I would have to pay before she would release my prescription (yes I asked for it as a matter of principle). If you will see above, there was basically no "contact fitting" because I provided my previous measurements. I now have an appointment with an optometrist in Fairhope. Their office confirmed that the price of the lens will be what I'm used to paying ($700) and I'll pay for another exam. But I don't think I have a choice. And yes, I absolutely love these lenses and understand that they are a premium product. But charging $600 more for the same lens I can purchase down the street is insane. Bottom line -- buyer beware. read more

I moved on from them. The lady that is responsible for prescriptions and lenses NEVER returns calls. I tried for two months to obtain my prescription with no luck. I even spoke to the "manager" who was supposed to call me back with my prescription, which she did not. read more

I have been visiting this office for my eyes for 3-4 years now. Today I showed up for an appointment and was told that I was not scheduled for an appointment. The receptionist said I cancelled my last appointment (which I did), however I also rescheduled at the same time. She went on to say that I was not rescheduled because their records showed I was in collections. I asked her what insurances they had on file for me. She rattled off two. I asked about a third one, and she goes, "Oh yes, we have that too." My response was to ask why was I being billed or in collections with three insurances paying them? Then she suddenly thought to tell me that they did not accept one of the insurances. Mind you, I've been coming here for approximately 4 years and no one ever thought to tell me they didn't accept my insurance! When I asked how much was in collections, no one knew‍. It's great convenience to have eye,ear,nose,throat doctors all in one location but that doesn't compensate for the lack of privacy. The lady at the front desk for Dr. Turner is very loud! HIPAA is of no concern to these people. I dont appreciate my business being said so loud for the whole waiting room to hear. Even when she is talking to her fellow co-workers she has no filters or inside voice. I dont need to know their personal business but a person can't help hear it all because they dont know how to talk softly. There were often moments when strange sounds or song lyrics would suddenly be loudly sung. No professional conduct by any of the receptionists. It's like children playing behind the desk. They also make very rude comments or remarks about patients to each other when they walk away from the counter or are leaving, again loud enough for waiting area to hear. For a month now I have been trying to get a copy of my glasses prescription, optic never returns calls and voice messages. I even spoke to a supervisor "Kristi" who did nothing. My whole family will be going somewhere else for our eye needs. read more

The front desk and check out staff is incompetent at a minimum. My appointment was 30 minutes late and when I asked why such a delay, the girl at the front desk sat there chewing her gum and stared at me with the dull eye of a dairy cow. She finally said, "you'll be called soon", but -surprise- I wasn't. This clinic is abysmal. read more

ONLY REASON they got one star is because there isn't an option for ZERO stars!! Here's why... I made an appointment with these imbeciles for an eye exam almost three weeks in advance. I got so many reminder texts and phone calls reminding me and confirming the appointment that it bordered on absurdity. The morning of the appointment, I received another confirmation text and also spoke with someone at the location and confirmed my appointment. When I finally get to the office for my appointment, I am informed, quite nonchalantly, I must add, that the doctor isn't in and won't be back for another two weeks. Needless to say, I was very frustrated and quite upset. I am told someone should have called you and informed you....NO SHIT!!! Perhaps one of the countless times I was texted and called to remind and confirm the appointment, it would have been an excellent time to inform me. No apology for the lack of communication or for wasting someone's time. I can guarantee they would have charged me an absurd amount if I had not shown up for my appointment. What about my time that was wasted? Do yourselves a huge favor and STAY CLEAR of this place! There are unprofessional, unsympathetic, and inconsiderate individuals working there. I came in 15 minutes early as I was asked to do. I had checked in on-line as I was asked to do. My appointment was at 2:00PM. I will tolerate a 15 minute wait but not 30 minutes. They clearly overbook and this falls in line with most of the medical establishments. This was the Premier Medical Group in Daphne, Alabama. I walked out. I was called 35 minutes later asking where I was. I explained very nicely to the lady that I waited 30 minutes and that since they didn't think it was OK to stick to their prescribed time of my appointment, I wouldn't be paying or seeing them again. If you want to be unknowingly charged an EXTRA $40 for an annual eye exam with a Rx for new lenses -- when my Medicare-approved provider's handbook indicated that both my wife and I qualified for ZERO co-pay -- then go to PREMIER in Daphne. Sure the service was good and the Doctor friendly, patient, kind and professional, but isn't this what is expected? (I don't go to a restaurant and compliment them on my food being hot, silverware clean, and server COVID-19 protected). Unfortunately, because of a scheduling conflict last Nov. 2020, we made the mistake of switching eyecare providers from the local one usually used who NEVER charged us anything extra for what PREMIER separately bills as "Determination of refractive state". While I certainly am not a medical professional, my internet search indicates this means something like performing the tests required to provide my Rx for new lenses. Hello, isn't this one of the primary reasons I schedule my annual exam in the 1st place? My brief phone survey confirmed that my former provider was not alone in charging ZERO co-pay when supplying me with a Rx for new lenses. Had 2 appointments scheduled and both were 3 HOURS long!!! Horrible office manager! I walked out of my second appt because of the wait time. They double or triple book all appointments and makes it so frustrating. And believe me, the ENTIRE waiting was all complaining both trips I made there. Dr Turner was great. I don't give out 5 stars often. Five stars, to me, is excellence. BUT I am loving Dr. Harrell and his staff in Daphne. Premier is a HUGE group of docs and the Mobile location on Dauphin Street is a big fat yuck. Come to Daphne! These people are all so very nice, and I respond well to nice. First, you won't wait long at all. In Mobile I was sitting for 1-3 hours. In Daphne the delay is never more than 15 minutes. Did I say the people are nice? I feel close to the staff. One is a cat care-giver. Another is trying out shoes for the best comfort during long shifts. Dr. Harrell chats about school reunions and gets the fact I want to see far away - screw readers. The contacts lady is so much fun. I want to have her over for sunset wine time at my house. Yes, maybe I can go to Sam's and save a few bucks. But NO WAY. These people are the real deal and take more notes than my diabetic doc. All I comment on are my old diabetic eyes. But this is a truly great experience, Pros with heart. read more
