Tomorrow is a bank holiday so I don't know if we're going to get paid today or at all? wasn't the direct client -- I was the seller working with the buyer's lender, Baker Collins & Co. However, I've been very involved in coordinating the closing because I'm scheduled to leave the country for three weeks and wanted to ensure everything was settled before I go. Unfortunately, communication with Maureen Lewis has been unnecessarily difficult. Simple questions -- like whether the office would even be open on Veterans Day -- went unanswered or were met with vague replies and smiley faces and snide remarks like "I'm not the owner" instead of clear information. A two-minute confirmation turned into a multi-day back-and-forth. I understand they handle a lot of closings and that everyone's busy, but professionalism means taking responsibility and providing straightforward answers, especially when a client's (or seller's) transaction is on the line. We still haven't closed yet, so I'm a little concerned about how this will play out -- and that's not a feeling anyone wants before a major financial transaction.

The issue isn't necessarily that most loan officers suck. It's not that. They do the job the way…read morethe know how, asking for information as it occurs to them to do so, relying on a supporting cast of funders and processors to push the loan to the finish line. They make the initial sales pitch, snag the borrower, call it a day. When my wife and I initially bought a house, we figured loan officers were a dime a dozen, that they'd all essentially fulfill the same function - sell us their brand, and then set their minions to work. Our initial experience was like pulling teeth, but we figured it was supposed to be that way. And generally, I think it is that way. Chris is different. He's been working this gig for a long time, and it seems that nothing surprises him. He knows what documents to gather immediately. He knows the questions to ask upfront. He's got an incredible sense of the industry at large, and can often guess the outcomes of things like appraisals long before they come in. The end result is that he doesn't waste my time. His sense of organization is superlative. Rarely, if ever, has Chris needed to request additional paperwork from me, because he knew before I'd even applied for the loan exactly what he'd need from me. When he has needed to ask for a bit more, he's made it as easy for me as possible. And in the end, he nearly always over-performs because he never promises more than he knows he can fulfill.
