Once you get past the crowds, you're free to retreat in the quiet, intimate, two floor displays. The guards are very sweet and knowledgeable and will often talk to you about what they know. You can probably leisurely soak in the entire exhibit in a hour or two, which makes for a lovely weekend afternoon outing (or fantastic break from outrageous thesis researching). There have never been more than a handful of people in there when I've visited during the week, and I doubt the weekends are any busier. Last semester there was a Jackson Pollock/Herbert Matter exhibit, and currently the exhibit is Jewish mosaics from the Roman Empire.

It's kind of like an artist's dream - the inspiring space, the friendly community, the freedom to work alone or in the company of others... I didn't realize how important this site is to history but it was really nice to see letters and photographs of that time and about Newton area that nobody really thinks about. The attraction is reasonably priced for individuals visiting at $6 per person. The field trip was also very reasonable for up to 30 children and up to 10 adults. The foyer explains the background of the owners and their involvement with the abolition movement and the underground railroad in the 1800s. The children were able to look at source documents and work in teams to make inferences on the information and draw conclusions. Next, we moved to the lower level which is professionally outfitted with plaques explaining the history and a lot of fantastic artifacts. There were several interactive and "please touch" areas, which all the children (and even the teens enjoyed). There were boxes they could climb into to show what it was like to travel across the ocean as a captured slave, and the interesting story of Henry Box Brown. There was even an excavated well (covered with a grate, of course) that may have been used to hide fugitive slaves. On the main floor, the children were able to explore some of the other areas of the house, like "Newton's Toy Box," information on stained glass, and an extensive time-line of the house and history makers. Upstairs was a small area open to the public (due to their offices being on that floor) that had a flag on display from the civil war era. and envelopes used for propaganda during that time period. There were also pictures of the original rooms and textile samples with information about the dress at the time. The main floor also has a lovely little gift shop with a good variety of souvenirs. The staff was friendly and helpful. A most wonderful trip!

There also seems to be a little confusion on whether this site includes the state historic site run by the National park service (which I couldn't find because it listed this address on Joy street). This is not fancy. It's not flashy. A lot of it isn't original. But it's important history that matters, and the site manager, Tobias, is passionate and knowledgeable, and really bumped this experience up to five stars. The museum asks we don't photograph things (but you are allowed photos in the meeting house). There was some art and photography by black artists. A war uniform. Some original documents such as bills of sale for the enslaved and letters from Frederick Douglass. They have rotating exhibits, and this time around it was jazz. You get half an hour to peruse the small museum. Then you meet back up with Tobias, who spends a lot of time telling you about how black people sued for the freedom and won, how they built a vibrant black community on Beacon Hill, the Abiel Smith School, and the fight for desegregation. He's a great speaker and very passionate, but also down to earth. In the meeting house itself, much of it is rebuilt, but there are two original pews and the floorboards are from the 1700s and original to the house (the boards were bought before the house was built). I think my ticket was 10 dollars. They have three daily sessions and do have limits on numbers of tickets sold. Edit: I think what's listed as "Boston African American National Historic Site" is just a collective term used for 15 structures important to black history in Boston, including the meeting house. There is a tour the rangers run in warmer months and a year round audio tour year round.
