I needed another contractor to come in and fix it, and no one would touch the job. So I called Sound Kitchen and Bath and they referred me to Ron Vanderbeken. Ron is my hero! He and his crew came in, listened carefully to what I had to say, ripped out the botched job and did it correctly. He is not the cheapest contractor, but as I learned the hard way, you get what you pay for. Ron is excellent at his craft and hires excellent people to work with him. He runs a tight ship, stays on schedule, works clean, and answered my endless questions. My job had red flags all over it, since he was fixing someone else's work. I am very appreciative that he took it on. The part of his service that speaks of his integrity and customer service the most in my opinion is the 90 day follow up. Ron came to my home and checked out the shower floor, asked me if I was satisfied and I was. He stands behind his work. I highly recommend him. He is worth every penny.

Ken really worked hard to find a good solution at a reasonable cost, and in fact he was able to unblock the project really quickly by proposing a hidden beam that would maintain the aesthetics of the original plan. Ken also took on several smaller projects for us which it would have been hard to get a contractor for alone, but he was able to slot them in around the main project in a way that made sense for all of us. It's a family operated business which is nice. All our communications were with Ken or Jennifer directly -- no corporate office giving you the run-around like you might find with some larger contracting organizations.

I'm not in a trade, but my dad was so I grew up around it. You wonder if they're going to do a solid job, if they are going to find 'more' issues to tack on to the bill and finally what they are going to charge and if it's competitive and reasonable. Anyone who's gotten multiple bids will quickly learn that bids from different contractors can come back wildly different and it's hard to gauge why unless you are in the business or know and trust the contractor (or whoever recommended them). Rest assured and from my experience, HBC General Contractors are top notch all around. It's my understanding they recently went through an ownership change in the Spring/summer of 2017, and see some of the reviews here are a bit older, so if anyone is concerned about that, don't be. The new crew - Ken and company are fantastic. We had an issue with dry-rot below our back sliding door. We had just purchased the house months earlier, so didn't know how long the issue had been there or how severe the rot was. We also had an ant issue, and know now that it was due to the rot issue, so it was really important to me that we got this taken care of prior to rainy season again. We had a couple contractors come out for bids. What set HBC apart for me was how on top of it they were on communicating, genuinely felt honesty about pricing and breaking down how they arrived at it (including instructing me to buy the door myself so I'd save money), and the degree of care they took in doing the job itself. I know there was no corners cut, because I worked from home the day they came over, and Ken called me over a few times to show me the progress and how/what they were doing to prevent it from happening in the future. They took out the old door, dug out and fixed all dry rotted areas (which went deeper, I saw, than expected), hung new fancier sliding door and sealed it up so good (this to me was above/beyond) I feel very confident I'll never have the same issue at that spot again. My job was relatively small compared to other very large projects that they do (they showed me pics), but I was never made to feel like I was less important or a 'side' thing for them. Kitchen was first, came in on time and on budget with minimal issues. Second project was done during the middle of Covid, so that hampered timing a bit, but I think that was understandable. The first thing Tom told me when he came over for the first day of work was: "How did you find…read morethese guys? They can't find new customers and all their existing customers aged out/died". We probably should have ran at this point. We had a quote from Johnson Brothers Construction to rebuild our shower that had a leaking drain. Their quote was very competitive ($10k + tax) and they seemed knowledgable enough, so we went with them, aware that things might go over the quoted amount given that every projects has unknown. We did have some unforeseen things happen, requiring an extra day of labor to strengthen the floor and some weirdness about the existing drain setup that was taken care of by a plumber in an hour. Yet, here we are, two months later with a total bill that is well over twice the quoted amount, a tiling job that is sub-par and a lot of finishing touches are still missing. When you hire a general contractor, you expect them to guarantee some level of quality and to advocate on your behalf with subcontractors. In our case, the tiling subcontractor not only did a horrible job, but also tried to increase the cost for some work we already sign-off on and way over ordered one of the types of tiles (that we had to pay for). In the end the subcontractor fixed as much as they could short of redoing the whole floor, but we were the one fighting for it and inspecting the work. JBC just stood by. JBC also had two subcontractor give us quote for some drywall for a transition strip. Their interfacing between these subcontractors is essentially a series of screenshots of iMessage conversations they have with those subs. I made it clear to the drywall sub that I wanted quotes for the different parts of the job. He gives us one opaque quote with possibly an extra $100 (??). The transition strip sub, what we hear is that he'll come by by the end of next week. Saturday comes and he is no where to be found. JBC gave no updates along the way. I could also talk about their opaque billing practices, how they're charging for labor hours that don't seem to line up with what I can see on my front door camera. Or how they have 3 guys show up for the same amount of time and yet one of them is charging for an extra half hour? Honestly I could go on and on. We definitely regret going with JBC for our job. I should have heeded my gut feeling when Tom said what he did. You definitely should.

He thoughtfully assessed the space that was left when our old broken microwave was taken down and assured us that, no matter what, he would have a solution on how to mount our new microwave. CONTRACTOR REFUSED TO REFUND ANY OF MY DEPOSIT (almost $4K) DESPITE DOING NO WORK BEFORE I FIRED…read moreHIM. I hired Alpha-Pac NW Construction to build a front deck for me. I liked the detailed quote and went into it knowing that the business was new with very little history (thus risky), but I wanted to give a young guy starting out a chance. I said the same to him & declined to pay my deposit by Zelle when he suggested it. (Payment by Zelle is the same as cash, not recoverable.) This was a red flag that I should not have ignored. He quickly clarified that he meant Square & I told him explicitly that I would only pay by credit card in case things didn't work out and I needed to claw my money back. We mutually agreed upon a start date (Wed Dec 7), and he didn't show up. At the end of the day, he sent me a text explaining why he didn't come, but promised to show up first thing in the morning. Equipment was dropped on my lawn, but he didn't start work that day (Thurs) or the next (Fri). He did not contact me, either. I reached out over the weekend to let him know that I replaced the tarp over his equipment, which was exposed during a windstorm. He told me at that time that he would start on Monday. He did not show up or contact me on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. On Thurs Dec 14 I reached out to him again and asked what was going on. He explained that a loved one was in the hospital. At that point, I determined that he was unreliable and was likely to continue that way. I told him that I didn't want to move forward with him and asked for my money back. He said that he had already purchased the materials, and I offered to subtract the cost of materials from the refund, provided that he dropped of the materials and receipts. He was quick to bring the materials, but did not bring receipts. He promised to provide them later that day. I never heard from him again, despite reaching out to him multiple times by text and phone. I have filed a complaint with BBB and my credit card company, thus far I have not recovered any of my money. I hired a more experienced contractor after this, who took a look at the materials in my garage and said that he couldn't use most of the materials; most of the lumber was the wrong size (too small, not up to code), the cement wasn't needed (overkill, not required by code), and the fasteners were specific to the lumber size & couldn't be used. I do not recommend doing business with Alpha-Pac NW; rather I would warn you to stay away.
