I ordered a smoke haddock soup that is a Scottish specialty. I found a piece of metal wire in it. The manager was nice enough to take the price off our bill. I ordered a salad to be shared according to the menu, but it was so small that there was not enough to share. My husband's steak was not worthy of the restaurant's name. My chocolate ice cream was nothing special. The ladies room had toilet paper strewn across the floor. It needed service. The waitresses gave good attention but it did not make up for the insufficiencies. When I went to past via credit card, I received a receipt that was totally blank as the machine was out of ink. The Service was.very good but kitchen was slow. Atmosphere was cool. Mussels app was the right quantity, but they were stringy and the broth lacked depth. Camembert was good, not great, small with two pieces of bread. Ribeyes were two thin and cooked past the ordered temp. They did taste ok but nowhere near worth the price. Filets were closer. The sauces were okay but came in very small containers for an up charge. Onion rings to share is six normal size onion rings nothing special. Vegetables were fresh but could use some flavor. Very, very small salad. Fries were very good. Nothing was terrible and maybe it was an off night but there was no standout and for the price it was simply a letdown on this occasion. read more

Rest of food was there for the others, sea bass, lamb and duck arrived but steak had to get redone.. will be out in 5....10 minutes later arrives and yes good food, nice steak w/bone marrow gravy. Wrapping up with espresso and sticky toffee. Banana bread and sticky toffee desserts should not take too long? 25 minutes to cut a slice of banana bread apparently. It would be 5 stars for the food alone and the vast majority of the service. The quality cuts, deft seasoning, and careful presentation are wonderful. All of the servers were as nice as can be. We liked it so much, we ate here twice for dinner during 4 day stay. Why the low rating? The practice of targeting tipping to US tourists. Here's the thing, some of us are well travelled enough to know that in the UK, most of Europe, Australia, and others...tipping is "not a thing". Now, I have noticed some places in Scotland are starting to prompt for tips (please, don't start that practice, it's a hot mess in the US right now). But...BUT, ask it if all your patrons. The first night here, we were prompted for a tip when paying at the end of the meal. We had an early seating, so no one else around as a data point. So we tipped. Then on the second night, we had a different waiter, equally friendly as the first. We chatted it up and got along great. But when the bill came, he dismissed the screen asking for a tip reaffirming what we knew wasn't a common practice. Then as we finished our dessert and digestif, we noticed one table of Americans being prompted for a tip (we overheard their debate as to how much), while another table of localish Scots (the tablet was in plain view of our table) was not. The best thing I tried was the Goat cheese Starter plate, everything else was very minimalist in an effort to look fancy, but the flavor of the food didn't fit the minimal style. Seated quickly on a Sun evening. Food and drink order taken quickly within 15 minutes. Mussels starter served quickly and was good. Our drinks did not arrive until the mussels were completed and we had to question the waitress 25 minutes after ordering. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited. Dinner finally arrived over an hour after ordering and us reminding the wait staff multiple times. The steak and duck were lukewarm warm and the cod was not edible. Very disappointed overall. We made reservations for 4 but somehow they put us down for a party of 2 so we had to wait an additional half hour. We all ordered cullen skink soup and it was a huge disappointment to all of us. Instead of rich and creamy like the other places we'd had it, it was thin, as if made with skim milk. My friend couldn't even eat hers, so I ate it since there was nothing else on the menu for a vegetarian/pescatarian. Right by our hotel, the Palace Hotel, so we made reservations and walked to it. At 6:30 they weee turning away people without reservations. We ordered the Chateau Briand medium done. Disappointing. The food was very pretty but nothing tasted great. It was obvious from the cut and texture that the lobster had been frozen, even though they charge MP which at the time was $49. It wasn't good. The sea bass was a tiny portion but prepared well. Potatoes lacked salt and general flavor. The Camembert starter could have used a jam or honey for contrast and the bread that accompanied it seemed like a slice of whole grain out of a market bag. The pink peppercorn on the salad was very nice and the salad was probably the best part of the whole meal. We didn't finish anything and wouldn't come back. Would have left two stars except for the distinct taste of bleach in a bite towards the end. Service was good. Prime is across the river from Inverness castle, so the whole dining area has a BEAUTIFUL view of the castle. They have only been open for about three weeks when we stopped by. A group of us were staying close by and stumbled to this place unplanned. The food was amazing, we all had steak and shared appetizers. Our server, Stephen, was super friendly and helpful. If we were ever back in Inverness, this would be the first place we eat at again. I wish them the best of luck in the future and hope to eat there again. read more

We went here for my 50th birthday and had an absolutely miserable time. Our server made it to our table maybe 4 times and we had to ask others for everything. She was rude and inattentive and got our order wrong. She disappeared after we got our food (brought by others) and checking on us once. We had to flag down others to get our tab. Went to Prime last night. We started with the local bakery bread. My only complaint here is that it was not served warm. We have had bread in a couple of different restaurants while in Scotland, none of which were served warm. Dear Scotland.. bread is just so much better when it is warm. We then had the seafood board. Not really my thing here but my husband enjoyed it. We all had steaks and while nothing special about them, they were good. For sides we had skinny fries (these fries need to go on a diet because they were not skinny), mushrooms nothing special but good, Mac and cheese (a little bland, just needed a little salt) and sweet potato fries with goat cheese (ding ding ding, winner winner dinner). Great location on the Ness River overlooking the castle and always lively. Our starters, fresh Lewis oysters & the mussels were delicious! The mussels as a starter were a large portion , cooked perfectly and the spicy broth was so fantastic, we slurped every last drop! Unfortunately the mains did not fare as well. We both ordered the surf and turf with Fillet and had the sides of smashed garlic new potatoes & steamed broccoli & green beans which were included. The steak was cooked properly and the peppercorn sauce was good but the expected Tiger Prawns with garlic butter were anything but. They were bland over cooked jumbo shrimp with little flavor and certainly no garlic butter. Wines by the glass were very limited and just ok. Full bar. Service was adequate. Perhaps it is a matter of cultures, and if that be the case then I apologize. But our "rib eyes" which were more accurately delmonicos, were maybe one half an inch thick - something more appropriate in the states for a luncheon sandwich rather than a main entre for an evening meal. Excellent service. They were able to give me a table within an hour before curfew. The mussels were spicy, but juicy. I got a side of onion rings and greens as well. The greens were very fresh and the onion rings were perfection! Did not have to pull the onion out of the crust, that's how well cooked the rings were. Let me start this review by saying, I made a reservation here because the Yelp filters said it was "good for kids." It's not. I made a reservation for 7:30, and our table was ready at 7:40. We didn't hang around outside until the table was ready, but waited at a discreet distance next to the river and then came back. I knew immediately that they didn't want kids, because they gave us the worst table in the restaurant, directly next to the door to the men's toilet. By directly, I mean, we were nestled next to the door, immediately after which, men were urinating, in a toilet that clearly had poor ventilation and was not frequently cleaned. As a consequence, every time guys left the toilet, a gust of urine-scented wind wafted over our table. There was an empty couple of tables right next to ours, so I asked the hostess if we could move over to those. She gave me an annoyed look, but agreed. We ordered drinks, our meals, and an oyster starter. The drinks came right away. The kids meals came shortly after, and then the wait came for our main courses. A side note to say that the kid's meals came with tiny portions and a large side salad covered in vinaigrette. I hope your kids are fancier than ours, and can appreciate a mixed salad with vinaigrette. We had to ask twice, but finally, after the tables around us, some of whom had come later, were finishing up, our mains came, a hour and a half into our reservation time. By this point, our two kids had long since finished their food and were tired and antsy, so we ate our mediocre food as quickly as possible. The review is two stars because one of us ordered fish, which was bland but decently cooked. However the other entree was a small duck breast that was so overcooked that a steak knife had to be requested, and even then it was difficult to get through the tough meat. Supposedly it came with a duck sausage side, but besides a single cooked carrot, the only other thing on the plate was a small tureen of what seemed to be stewed leek and potatoes. By the time we were done we were desperate to leave, but since the kids meal was two courses and came with dessert, we made the mistake of ordering it, a sticky toffee pudding and the ice cream. On menu, it specified that the kids ice cream dessert was "two balls of Scottish ice cream," so when the waitress asked what flavors we wanted, I asked for one ball of chocolate and one ball of vanilla. What came was three desserts, a tiny sticky toffee pudding and two balls each of chocolate and vanilla. Exhausted, and not wanting to drag the experience out further, but just paid for our meal, including the three desserts, and got out as fast as we could, 2.5 hours after our 7:30 reservation time. read more

Located right by the water, the patio would be nice if the weather was good. On this night it was a bit cold. Dining room was booked with reservations. After ordering it over 45 minutes to arrive. The steak was tender and cooked to order. The side of honey-carrots was delicious as well. Steak came with a side of whisky sauce which also went well with steak. Only complaint is the steak wasn't as hot as it could be when it arrived at the table. Would go again. read more

Nice ambiance, good service, good food Except their speciality (and the reason we went there) steak. Mine arrived cooked to order but for a ribeye, was very thin and loaded with chewy gristle. The waiter noticed the pile of inedible meat and ordered another steak for me. Yup, the new steak again cooked med rare and full of gristle. Think Golden Corral quality. Lady at next table also had dialogue with waiter over steak and pushed most of it aside. Mussels and salad were good. Oysters (1/2 doz) were on the small side for the price. We split two starters between three of us and there was ample to go around. The seafood board is cold with some great tastes on it and the mussels in Asian broth were fabulous. For our mains we had two fish dishes and the rabbit and all were good.
