That being said, I was expecting less, as I had in my head that this could be the kind of place that thinks being vegetarian is a substitute for being a decent restaurant. Not so, in my experience. You might look at the online menu and think that they wouldn't offer its full scope at each outlet, but they seemed to have a huge variety of dishes, from South Indian to various Indo-Chinese and Indo-Mexican fusion dishes to some random pasta for people who don't like Indian I guess. Being adventurous, I tried some idli (lentil-rice cakes) in a Chinese sauce, which was pretty tasty. Mildly spicy, albeit nothing scary. The vada dipped in sambar to start was solid enough as well. And they seemed to be running a decent restaurant. Between the out-front service and the slightly visible kitchen area in the back, there were quite a few people here actually preparing food, and it was correspondingly good. It was cleaner than a lot of places. It was also evident that they could tell I was in a hurry, and they got out my dishes just in time for me to catch a bus. Probably four star food, but given the low level of service I've become accustomed to at Indian places here (and anywhere really), the overall dining experience was quite good. What else would I ask of them? Offer some tofu, maybe, add in online ordering. I wish it wasn't out in Morningside, but nonetheless, I imagine I'll give them another shot at some point.

Well it wasn't, I was right annoyed. I mean, why bother even getting Indian if you don't get Raita?! Let me tell you how this happened. We rang up to order some take away. This was our first time ordering from this place and we got kofta and vegetable korma, as well as cheese and garlic and cheese and spinach naan. Everything is served with rice by the way, a definite plus in my books. Anyway, there's this deal where you can get two naan breads and raita and some other thing, so we decided that was great and we'd get it. They rang us back after we placed the phone order to say we couldn't. Would have been more helpful to tell us in the first phone call, but okay. So we said, well can we just get the two naan's and the raita. Then we got home and there was no raita. It was upsetting. So while the service was a little annoying the food was great. Really tasty food, and I've not been a big fan of Indian in the past. The vegetable korma was really nice. Had a lot of flavour to it. We got mild so I'm not sure about the heat levels, but flavour was definitely a win. And the naan's were to die for. I mean, always better with raita but they tasted amazing. I went home and started eating. First I had the Chicken Biriyani which was really quite good (and better than most in my opinion) it had lots of vegetables and was seasoned quite well. After this I had the Butter Chicken (butter chicken should always be ordered when trying a new Indian place, it's kind of like a cuisine benchmark), and it was extremely sweet. There is no other way to put it, it was halfway between the sweetness of a main course and dessert. This was quite disappointing since the Biriyani was quite good. Even with the butter chicken fiasco Hello India was better than most Indian restaurants I have been to in Brisbane but it is still not close to my favourite Indian Restaurant (in Brisbane), Aamaya.

As there are normally three vege choices you have to specify your preference, otherwise expect a quick interrogation or be happy with the whim of the lady with the ladle. Expect no frills service here. You collect your cutlery when you pay, and the ladies behind the counter don't suffer indecisiveness lightly. I've sometimes experienced Seinfeld-esque Soup Nazi desperation as I've filed towards the looming till, internally rehearsing my order. But to be fair, on the quieter nights the staff may treat you to a brilliant smile, or an extra hunk of meat in your portion. I recently went in for an early dinner (before the 7 o'clock rush) and saw a tray of brightly coloured sweets out on display. I asked what they were and she told me they were gifts to the customers in celebration of their guru's birthday (his beatific, smiling face is on display in a framed picture behind the counter). She happily loaded me up with freebies, saying I was the first to ask about them. I even received a napkin with my meal, without even having to specifically ask for one - truly a rare event! A sign behind the counter respectfully invites customers to inspect the cleanliness of the kitchen - I've never been game to take them up on their offer. The staff are really nice, though there can be a bit of a language barrier, where you have to repeat yourself for them to understand what you are saying. Overall, I would say that they are definitely worth getting some takeaway Indian from, perhaps look elsewhere if you are looking to dine in though.
