I've been to PBS a handful of times and during each visit I received a decent cut at a fair price. However, the shop has been filthy during each of my visits. During every visit, there's been a HUGE pile of hair just swept to the corner and the stations weren't swept between every customer. There are places where hair is LITERALLY caked on the wood upholstery. I've never see such a dirty floor at visits to other shops throughout the country! If the barbers aren't going to keep the shop clean, please hire someone to perform the task. read more

Used to go here semi-regularly and they were okay. Had to get a haircut recently on short notice, so I decided to try them again. I can honestly say it was one of the worst haircuts I ever received by an individual who had no idea how to treat and communicate with a customer. I suspect because of location and "Princeton" in the name, there may be the expectation that an exceptional follicle by follicle shearing is in the offing by trained British valets. It's a barber shop much like the tens of thousands all over the country. You sit in the chair, tell them what you want and hope you don't emerge looking like a defective hedgerow. Dropped in without an appointment and was quickly attended to. Rebecca, my barber, was amiable, attentive, and very skilled with the tools of her trade. She spent a few minutes going over the possibilities and, on hearing my wishes, went to work. I'm almost 70 and have gotten more haircuts than I could ever count. She was patient and gave me all the opportunities to assess her work then proceed further. She took her time, as opposed to others who want you in then out as quickly as possible. The white lady with brown hair who works there gave me the worst haircut of my life. I got a low-skin fade and she didn't blend it. I asked her repeatedly to blend and she said something like "it's just your hair color that makes it look not blended." She then cut my hair on top a little too short, but that's my mistake for not clarifying enough details to a woman who obviously is an absolute moron. read more

This shop could be awesome if there were a manger in duty, I'm guessing there was not due to all the silliness and constant blabbering is really not just unprofessional but so immature. So...I've been coming to Princeton Barber Shop for all of my haircuts since I started at Princeton in Fall 2016 to present (Spring 2020), and I've never had issues with the quality of service. The haircuts were nothing exceptional -- they got the job done -- but also nothing to complain about, and were of pretty good value for the price, especially with the student discount. Today, however, I had probably the worst experience I've had there so far. For one, the barber I had sprayed head with water (to make it easier for her to cut I assume) for a full 10 seconds, to the point where my hair got soaked. Water was literally dripping down my face and I couldn't open my eyes because she had dowsed my head with so much water -- not a pleasant experience. I also told her at the beginning of the cut that I wanted a 4 on the sides. After my cut, when I was talking to my friends and classmates, I was made aware of the fact that my sides were significantly shorter than they usually are. I'm almost certain my barber used a 3-length head by mistake, and just chose not to tell me in the 20 minutes between her starting to cut my sides and me paying her for the haircut. Overall, I'm really disappointed in the service I received this afternoon at this firm. I know the cut depends on which barber you end up with, and I've generally received great service in the past, but inconsistency and quality are definitely something that management and ownership should work on with this store. read more

I came to Princeton Barber Shop thinking it was a upscale place with professionals, What it turned out to be was a upscale looking place with mediocre barbers, I forget the name of the barber who did my haircut, I asked for a simple cut, #2 on top, #1 on the sides, and a trim and shape up of my beard. My hair on top is two different lengths, my beard below my jaw line looked like a tsunami wave not straight at all. There was still longer bits of hair on my neck which was suppose to be clean shaved, along my cheeks there was still noticeable hair. My cut usually goes at other places for $20-22, I paid $30 which is a bit high for the quality that I was given. I will never go back nor will ever recommend this place to anyone. read more

So I've been going here for a few years now. The novelty of focusing on men's hair and the back of the neck shave was appealing. Plus it's only like 20 bucks so not a terrible price. But to be very straightforward the haircuts are not exceptional. Pretty much what'd you'd get at Supercuts or Fantastic Sams. About 2/3s of the time I'm disappointed in cut...but I'm a guy and hair grows back so not the biggest deal...and there aren't many exceptional options in the area. The ships about 20mins away from me so drive there on a Sunday when the posted hours were 9-7pm. I was running a little late but arrived at the door at 655pm at which point I was turned away and told to return on their next open day. Had I arrived at 705 or 7 l, I would have understood this, but not at 655. A mediocre haircut and a lack of professionalism or consideration for their patrons. My 2 cents, unless you really like that back of the neck shave or the old style twirly thingy in front of the shop go to a chain stylist or pay a little more a get a good haircut at a higher end one. read more

Never going back. My barber did not listen to me when I described how I wanted my haircut or and didn't mind the picture I showed her of how I wanted my hair. As a result, my cut got messed up. There was way too much taken off in the front, so it wound up looking nothing like what I had asked for. Then they still asked me to pay full price even though I skipped the neck shave and told them politely I was upset and not happy with how my hair now looked (nothing like the description I gave or picture I showed). Word of warning: that was very unprofessional in my experience and I'll never make the mistake of going back there for anything again. The manager was rude, didn't bother apologizing, and took the barber's side. It was the worst haircut and worst customer service I ever experienced. read more

I began going to this barber shop since I moved to central Jersey in the summer of last year. The service has been a mess. At first I could get decent cuts, I'd feel nice after receiving them. The barber who gave me my first few cuts was amazing, young lady with tattoos. She stroked up friendly conversation and gave me tips on the local area and my hair. The subsequent visits were not so pleasant. For the last two visits here, I had a girl named Brigit. Her reception was not so great. Her demeanor did not feel welcoming at all and it felt like she didn't want to be there. The first haircut I got with her was not great. I gave her the benefit of doubt. Maybe she was having a bad day. The next visit it's her again. And she has the same attitude on her. I sit down. In a flat tone she asks "what do you want?" "A low fade, slight trim" Normally when I say low the barber knows just exactly what I want. Not too far up the ear with enough length to play with up top. She grabs her clippers. I eye her body language. Inattentive, glancing at her other co workers with malicious intent. She readies up at the plate and brings the clippers closer to my head. I feel my throat slowly tightening. The first cut. She bring the clippers from my neck to nearly the top of my head. There's no turning back. I cant say she did it wrong, hair doesn't magically cut back on my head. It's full commitment time. She continues to cut and throughout she keeps getting distracted by her coworkers, putting no heart and soul into the haircut and looking onto her peers with sneering eyes. If you watched that movie 'Soul' recently, you would get an idea of how a haircut is supposed to make you feel. This haircut made me feel the opposite. I felt ugly and mutilated. Leaving the shop I felt as if I was transported to a different plane of existence. It felt ethereal but not in the good way. Like I was haunted by something. All in all, please do not go here if you do not want a 'f me up fam.' Or just don't get your haircuts with Brigit. read more

Very meh. The woman who cut my hair was timid with it, like she was scared of messing up. Not that I want my barber to be reckless, but I got the impression she wasn't very experienced. Took a couple tries to get the top right and wound up with more off than I would have liked. She never showed me the back so my hopes are not that high for that area. For $20 I would like a good haircut, not just the absence of hair. It's just hair and it'll grow back soon enough. But I'm regretting that I didn't skip the cut and go to Nassau barbers. read more

A great gem in Princeton... this has become my go-to joint for a haircut, beard trim, or clean up. The shop is a great blend of old skool (classic barbershop vibe) and modern barbershop. My barber of choice is Damian. In fact, I get my haircut exclusively by him these days. I go around his schedule and I don't even mind sitting it out if there's a wait-- he's that good. (Though usually the wait time is fairly reasonable.) Damian does an awesome job with my hair, taking the time to go over details and fine points. He remembers my preferences and works with me to get just the right look I'm going for. He's cautious and conservative when it's appropriate... for instance, starting me off with a certain fade and then exploring if I want to stay there or go a level shorter (he likes to say that he prefers to err on the side of caution because we can always go shorter but can't bring hair that's been cut back!). At the same time he isn't timid, tentative, or shaky. He's confident, assertive, and gives his input as to what would or wouldn't work, etc. Just the right balance. Now this might seem like common sense, but you'd be surprised how few barbers can get that balance right. Damian is great at what he does, plus he's friendly, engaging, humorous, and thoughtful. We actually end up having pretty deep conversations that can jump from spirituality to music to our favorite bits from The Office to veganism. Getting my haircut is no longer just a chore in my day, it's actually a nice little break from work when I can relax, chat with a thoughtful person, and get a little pampered. Only two downsides of this shop, as far as I'm concerned: 1. they don't take reservations/appointments (though you can try to time your visits and wait out til your favorite stylist is available) and 2. They are cash only. I definitely recommend this place and highly recommend Damian. read more

So the price is good, but that's about all I can say. My girlfriend pointed out that no one was sweeping up the hair on the floor and it was piling up everywhere, which is just gross. The person cutting my hair didn't offer me a mirror when they finished, so I couldn't see the back, and they hadn't really done anything to address a problematic cowlick. The front part of the cut was uneven lengths but because I felt rushed out of my chair, I didn't notice this until I got home. I don't live in Princeton, so I'll go to my regular barber and get a good haircut soon, but I was very disappointed in this one. This felt like a fancy Super Cuts--a chop shop--but at least they don't charge a lot. It also felt very cramped in terms of how many stations they had in the space. Whether or not you think Covid is "over," I think there's something to be said for spacing out the stations, and this place had about twice as many as it should have squeezed into a small space. I don't think I've ever gotten a haircut at such a cramped, crowded shop. Lots of room for improvement here--just saying! read more

This used to be the best barbershop in town. However, I received a subpar haircut today and my opinion of this establishment has declined significantly. My barber was incapable of performing the cut herself, stating on multiple instances that she didn't know how to do a certain section or was too scared to try; in response, another barber had to come and assist. Is that something you would want to hear while getting your haircut? Consequently, my hair was cut significantly shorter than I had asked for as the other barbers had not heard my specifications. Despite this clear lack of experience, my barber did not warn me that she was inexperienced before the cut and never apologized as she was cutting. Throughout the cut, she was also talking to the other barbers about unrelated matters and never once asked me any questions. read more

I got a cut from SportClips and my sideburns were uneven and just didn't look right. So I came here to get it fixed and they did just that. Blended it into a skin fade. It looks much better but honestly, I don't feel like I should have been charged for a full haircut. All she did was blend my sideburns and my neck. Maybe I'm wrong, but idk, I think a cleanup should cost less than $20. I asked her and she said, "I gave you a full skin fade." So not only do I think it was overpriced for what she did but the tone she answered with came across as rude. read more

Guys, I cannot express how awesome this place is! This is the most professional barber shop in Princeton, and the only one you should go to. They have an intuitive understanding of what you want your hair to look like. You want a faux hawk? You'll get a faux hawk. You want a Batman symbol on the back of your head? You'll get one. You want an artificial bald spot on the top of your head? They won't judge you... you'll get one. My man Ryan cut my hair the last time I went to the barber shop. I simply showed him a picture of how I wanted my hair, and he immediately understood what I wanted as he began working and making conversation. Reading the reviews, I expected much, much better. Walk in only, cash only. My first hesitation is that I see that the woman there is up next for the next customer. I've learned over the years that when it comes to men's hair, men should cut it. Sure, it may sound sexist, but in my experience, men simply do it better. So, I was doomed from the start. I sat in the chair, and she put the smock on, and was about to begin to cut my hair... she did not even ask what I wanted. First huge mistake. Sides were cut way too high, the part on the side was improperly cut, and it was a rush job. Although there was no one else in the shop, she did everything in less than 10 minutes. Sure, some barbers can do that, but she was not one of them. When she picked up the straight razor to shave my neck, I cringed... It has a cool feel, the chairs, the wood, beer, etc. But this was the worst haircut that I can remember getting. Maybe if she took her time, it would have been better. I have absolutely no problem paying $20-30 for a good cut, but this, at $20, was an absolute joke. I was expecting a lot, and was wildly disappointed. Will not be going back. Sad. read more

I'll start by saying... if they accepted credit cards, they might've received a 5th star. I understand the cash only bit... (I live in NYC).. but that doesn't mean I like it.. especially when they're not "cheap" haircuts... but I digress. The haircuts are solid. I have been there a few times now and won't be changing anytime soon (I am very particular about my hair). The shop itself is very nice/welcoming (old-school wood paneling..I appreciate architectural details..), the straight-blade finishing is a nice touch, the styles are timeless as well as appropriate for the area, and the staff is friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend... especially if said friend is tired of cheap mall-esque buzz-cuts that don't grow in well. read more

Moved to the area about a year ago, and this is my normal go to place when I'm around home. The woodwork, build out is beautiful. It has a wonderful classic princetonian look and feel. Travis the owner did a nice job with the shop. Travis clearly enjoys what he does, and strives for a perfect cut - even if it takes an extra few minutes. I realize I'm paying a few extra bucks for than at a normal barber shop, but its Princeton, and the atmosphere is worth it. The haircuts are consistent and I after trying another place right near my house I'm never going anywhere else when I'm home. To be overly critical... its yelp right? - I wish the entire crew at Princeton barber shop was a bit more friendly therefore a little less well... Princeton. - There is a fine line between that conversation (which I hate!) when you're getting your hair cut and not saying enough (which is alright by me). This place strikes a perfect balance - others may find they are a little on the quite side unless you engage them. - I hope to see the shelves are stocked uniformly and meticulously. It would be nice to see this shop is spotless and everything in a precise resting spot when they are closed. I've walked past after hours and it sort of looks as if after a long day they do a quick clean up and lock the door. - There is a moderate amount of dust on the build out that needs to be cleaned. - if you're going dark wood its going to be noticeable. read more

Hit or miss- some of the barbers are great, especially for the money. However, it seems when they have turnover, they train new barbers to replace the ones that have left, and that's where you can get an iffy haircut. I got my haircut by a guy I hadn't seen before today, told him I wanted a number 4 on the side, longer and parted on top. Cut way too short on top, almost as short as the sides, and sure to grow in awkwardly. Usually only get my hair cut every month or so, but expecting to have to go back (or elsewhere) in 2 weeks to trim the sides up and fix the part. Long story short, learned my lesson about going with the next available, and if I go back, will wait until it's someone I know will do a good job. read more

Service was timely, professional, and a cool ambience! I went on a weekday night during the summer (prior to all the Princeton kids coming back for school) so the place was pretty open.
