I stopped here on my way home while on vacation. I was planning on visiting the prison but tours were sold out that day. So I stopped in here for lunch. I sat at the bar, which had bars around it so you felt like you were eating in a cell. I had a cheeseburger and fries. It came out hot and delicious. The bartender was very attentive and I loved the theming of the restaurant and menu. A quick but delicious stop! The ambiance and appetizer "the wardens favorite" were amazing, as well as their low priced beer. They were able to accommodate 6 people into a table quickly. However, the food I had, the "Black and Blue Burger" was not good. It is a burger with blue cheese and Cajun spices and their blue cheese was entirely too over powering for the sandwich, all I was able to taste was earthy blue cheese flavor and it ruined the entire sandwich. I would come here again for beer prices and appetizer, but the burger left a bad taste in my mouth, literally and figuratively. We came in here with the hockey team, not the entire team though. It's good that we made reservations because they were packed, and given that we were like 4 families dining in, it would have been hours of waiting before we are seated. The place is cool, I liked the "prison" setting, not that I'm fond of prison cells but it's the way they have incorporated the prison setting in a resto/bar is really amazing. We were served very well, the waitress had a big pad with her to take all of our orders and to make sure that each check goes to the right person. It was intuitive of her to do that. The food is equally fine as well. We ordered a super supreme pizza and the club sandwich. I had 2 budlights for $4 each (which is awesome) and my wife had a coke zero. What I didn't really like is our food coming in a little cold than normal. Well, I guess the 14 degree weather outside kind of had something to do with it, but I would think our food kind of stayed out longer than it should be before being served. But that's really not a big deal. Overall our dinner was awesome and we will definitely come back the next time we're in Jeff City. Oh by the way, they brew their own beer here! read more

We were passing through and grabbed a bite to eat and a pint. I had the Big House IPA and my husband ordered the Prison Brown Ale. Both beers were very good. My pizza was tasty. It had meatballs and pepperonis. I didn't try my husband's burger but I did steal a sweet potato fry and they were so good. This place is definitely worth a stop if you are in town but be prepared to hunt for a place to park. read more

I have been a customer since they first opened. In that time the quality of their food has greatly deteriorated. The menu has been parred down and some things are just not tolerable. Today however as a friend wanted I agreed to go. I find it truly odd that a beer establishment services warm beer. Thy were not busy and I saw at least seven servers. Eating late after watching a couple of university basketball games, we decided to head to Prison Brew for dinner. The place was not very busy but it was a week night and late dinner. We sat at a table to watch some football. I had a porter and IPA and both were very good. When asked what people really like from the menu, we were told the woodfire pizza so that is what we tried. A 12" pizza was enough for both of us. It was a hand tossed crust with pepperoni topping plus green olives on one side (not mine!). The prison theme was a shout out to the Missouri State Penitentiary which is a few blocks away and available to tour. The theme was well done throughout the restaurant and the food and beer was very good. A good choice. read more

Really liked the concept of this, as the interior really had some unique touches. We came on a Saturday evening, and there was plenty of seating. We were seated outside, but the waitress didn't come for quite a while. Let's talk about the flies. SO MANY FLIES. They swarmed our food, it was so unpleasant. I don't know if theres trash bins around or if they don't have enough fans, but it really made the whole experience abysmal. We got a flight of the beer, which was a lot more than expected. 7 70z pours, and you can switch them out for another one if you don't like all 7 options. read more

Really enjoyed Prison Brews and the atmosphere it projects. Had a big group go for dinner. Service was attentive and pretty quick. Great looking menu and craft beer. Good appetizers. We tried the loaded fries, fried mushrooms, fried green beans and mozzarella sticks. All were good. Got a variety of entrees and they were well liked by the group. Several of us went with the evening special which was a 1-2 slab of ribs with sides. Ribs were tender and delicious. Great looking dessert menu as well. They were both wonderful! We loved that there were several vegetarian options on the menu. The bartender was nice and attentive. The place has a really cool vibe. Pleasantly surprised by the spot for lunch. Half pound burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas are their main lunch items. They were very quick with the burgers and fries, indicating that they are already prepping them in back. That's fine, though. It gets us in & out quickly, and these huge burgers were still fresh, juicy, & tasty and served on a substantial bun. I got the day's special, which was a portobello burger. I thought it would replace the burger with mushroom, but it was in addition to the burger. Very filling - and quite good. My side was sweet potato fries, which came out a minute later than the burger. My guess is that they only drop those when ordered. They also come with cinnamon sugar sprinkled over them. First time there and the 2 hostess never greeted me, once they set me in a booth it was 10mins before any server came over to ask my drink order and then he was so soft spoken couldn't hear what he said and he was not in any hurry. I got the Prison Burger with cheddar cheese and bacon and it was nothing special just a bacon cheeseburger. The fries were over cooked. I did enjoy my beer and the atmosphere but I won't be going back. read more

I was hoping for more when I read about the prison theme. It could have been done better, but still an interesting concept nonetheless. The names of the beers were pretty great. The beers themselves were just ok. All decent (and, admittedly, it can be difficult to have every single one of your beers rank as decent), but none particularly memorable. The wings were quite good. Spicy with sweet and tangy elements. Good meatiness and size. Just the right amount of sauce. And the dipping sauce was particularly delicious. The menu just says blue cheese, but there is definitely more going on. Sorta like blue cheese mixed with a touch of ranch and sour cream, and then diced jalapenos and an element of tanginess added. Went so good with the wings. The other food items we ordered were sorta blah. The restaurant itself is on the small side and laid-out in a very open fashion, which I liked. We stopped in here after the pen tour. Options seemed slim on a Saturday. The town was very empty. The concept is cute with the theme of a prison. We were seated quickly and service was great. We ordered the BBQ pulled pork pizza and prime rib sandwich to share. It was just okay. The pizza had a ton of black pepper which confused me because it got everywhere when I attempted to pick up the slice. I ate it with a fork since the crust was soggy. The sandwich was just okay as well. We didn't try the beer so I'm not sure how that is. read more

Great beers and a fun atmosphere at the Prison Brews! I enjoyed the death row stout and big yard Belgium blonde. My sandwich and presentation of the meal was terrible. My portabella mushroom sandwich was a soggy mess. The sweet potato fries were undercooked and soaked up the excessive mushroom juice, making them inedible. The bartender was very observant and kind. The other servers stood by the bar and complained about their tables and jobs the entire meal. Very disheartening. If you want some great beer, visit the prison, but go elsewhere for dinner! read more

Our first visit here and I was impressed by the customer service and attention to detail. We had heard that the pizza was good so we got that and a appetizer of I think it's called Buffalo Chicken Dip. It was Crazy good and A LOT. The pizza was just okay to me but I asked for green olives because I love them on a pizza and someone had mentioned them in a review. They aren't on the menu but the waitress and cook went out of their way to accommodate by going to the bar for olives. Super service! All the ingredients were fresh. They have a varied menu and great ambience. We will definitely go again to try other things that looked good. I would like to see a better Bloody Mary choice than Zing Zang but that's just preference. Try this place out for sure! read more
