A cute little brewing place with food as well as beer. The beer was just "so-so", but the theme was cute, and I absolutely loved the pretzels. PROS: -Service was fantastically friendly. We were seated promptly, and our waitress came to check in on us often. Our water glasses were never empty and after accidentally serving us a beer in a glass that had something on it, she profusely apologized and got us another one. I'm a bit annoyed that a party of 40+ came in shortly after us (and appeared to have been pre-scheduled) that we weren't warned about before we were seated, but despite all of the sudden rush of people, she still kept up with our service. -Pretzels are fantastic. Absolutely no complaint about any part of the pretzels. Soft, perfectly warmed, and not crunched. Chewy - basically exactly how a pretzel should be. -You can get a flight of all 7 of their beers for around $12. It's 7 ounce pours, so you end up with a ton of beer. More-than-enough for two people, really. -They sell growlers and crowlers (the stand-alone cans). I'm glad to see an easy way to take home some of their beers if you want them. -The restaurant has booths and tables. You can pick whichever one works best for you. Definitely a lot more privacy in their booth set-ups. -Outside seating looks adorable for nicer days. They also have a very nice bocce set-up out there. -The bathrooms were clean with no problems. CONS: -The pretzels are supposed to come with "beer cheese". The cheese that was served to me was pretty much a queso dip. Definitely not-at-all what I expected out of a beer cheese. -Very, VERY strong smell of hops when you're there. It's because they're brewing just a few feet from where you sit. You get accustomed to it while you're there but it's definitely overpowering. -Prison theme was cute but not quite as expected. Felt a little more "cheesy" than anything. But it was cute enough. -Beers are relatively "standard" tasting. Nothing too outside of the ordinary. Their Octoberfest was the most interesting of the bunch. read more

We were in town for the Missouri State Track. We came the night before to hang out in Jeff City. This town completely shuts down at 9. We were scrambling to find some good food before everything was closed! This was the ONLY place that served food late, or at least later than everyone else. And the food is GOOD. So good. The dips, sandwiches, beer. It's all good. We tried a flight. So much beer for so little money. The atmosphere is fun too. It might seem cheesey from the pictures, but it's actually a fun theme. Not as good as we were hoping. They said "please wait to be seated" however people just walk in and sit down. All while people are actually waiting to be seated. Our waiter seemed to be all over the place. He wasn't on top of things. I had asked for no bacon on my sandwich (I am allergic to it) and my sandwich came with bacon on it. Also had to call him over multiple times because not all our food came out. We were half done with everything before the rest of the food came out. The food wasn't anything special. When we first ordered our drinks my soda only came half filled. So needless to say that was gone as soon as he put it on the table. The bathroom was dirty. Stopped here for lunch while in town and I'm glad we did. They have indoor and outdoor seatings available. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We ordered a beer flight so we can try everything. Hello was there Saturday evening. Beer was good but service sure was bad. Not sure if you're understaffed and was not expecting the football crowd or what. People around us had same issues. We were not in a hurry and loved talking amongst us but many minor details issues we ordered appetizer of cheese curds a good long while later a person came back and said you were out of. Then a good long while a server brought pepper Jack cheese curds. Those who got salads had to ask for silverware three times with a good long while in between table next to us had same issue. Food came out and several from our table had to ask for theirs and still was missing a persons food. My medium rare ribeye sandwich was well done and the bread was hard as a rock I suspect it was under a heat lamp or warmer for a while. We were a starved group from out of town beer was good but was hard pressed to order more than one. Food was mediocre but service was pretty bad. read more

This place was crazy busy at 4:45pm on a Friday night. The manager was able to separate a 6 top so that our party of 4 could be seated (away from the cold breeze from the door). Our waitress was great, and our order came out very quickly. I tried the meat lovers pizza (wood fired), the crust was perfect, and ingredients tasted fresh. I sampled the sweet potato fries from a friend along with the artichoke/spinach dip, the fries were okay (a bit different with cinnamon on them), and the dip standard fare. Tried out Prison Brews after taking a tour of the penitentiary (highly recommend, by the way!). The tour guide recommended it. Service was friendly and helpful! Prices are just right. Try the fried pickles! I had a pork tenderloin and it was a bit bland and dry. Fries were a little soggy but tasty. I had a bite of my daughter's club sandwich and it was yummy! The burgers were ok but they really scrimped on the fries. After we got home I looked at the bill and they had charged us for fries. To keep with the theme of our road trip, after visiting the Missouri State Penitentiary, we grabbed a bite to eat at Prison Brews. Its only a few short blocks away from the prison and very easy to find. The décor is amazing as it is prison themed. Various items on the wall will allow for a ton of interesting information. They are a brewery and brew their own beers so we started off with a flight of 6-7 and an order of their soft pretzels. Be sure to get all the dips they offer for them because all of them are delicious and the pretzels are huge. The special for the day was a BBQ porksteak, with sides and cobbler for dessert which is what my hubby got. He said it was some of the best BBQ he had in awhile. THIS WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE WE EVER RECEIVED. DO NOT GO THERE. We ordered different appetizers and after 45mins, we didn't receive anything except a pizza. When we told them we needed to leave and to box everything up, they couldn't even do that for us and it was only wings and nachos. There is no rush in the kitchen and doesn't seem that anybody wants to help anyone. All you see are workers just standing around not doing anything in the kitchen. Best time I have ever had in jail!!! The beer selection was excellent. I had the IPA which was slightly citrusy and filled with hoppy deliciousness. We sat in the cell block booths for fun! My family reserved the Side Bar which is a separate room of Prison Brews. My parents have difficulty hearing so a separate room allowed us to visit and move around during our lunch. Maria, our server, was amazing. She was professional, helpful, courteous and easily handled both serving at the bar and taking our food orders. When good help is currently hard to find, Prison Brews is lucky to have a great server like Maria. The open menu was varied so all of our various family members could order their food of choice. Our food was delicious, the burgers cooked to the right temperature and the alcohol choices were varied. Thank you for having a dark beer choice. The room reservation charge is $50.
