I've been looking for a tailor shop like this all my life. The best in Halifax by far.

Sunnyside Mall in Bedford is more upscale than most and definitely worth the drive from Halifax if…read moreyou're looking for trendy, somewhat pricey merchandise. You'll find a fabulous Pete's Frootique, stocked quite differently from the one downtown and right next door is Cristall & Luckett Wine Merchants with a great wine selection from around the world. Prices range from $13 to ...well high and will go with any delicacy you've purchased at Pete's. As for fashion, there are clothes for kids at Bib & Tucker, as well as a number of shops for men and women that are unique and not your typical mall selection. One of my favorite shops is Uncommon Gear a very eco friendly place to buy toys, games and gear from strollers to every other nurturing thing kids need. Several home decor and foodie focused shops like Cucina Moderna, Backyard & Veranda (that has lots of stuff for indoors as well). There's even a branch of Stokes (always has sales and fun kitchen gear). The far end of the mall has travel agency, shoe repair...and more, plus access to Canadian Tire. And lastly, if you're into local handicrafts, there's a market just for you on Sundays from 11-5.

If you're looking for a rainy day shopping center that you can spend hours browsing through, then…read morethis mall is probably not the one you're looking for. That being said, it has some unique stores and a pleasant artsy vibe (especially on the end of the mall that houses Pete's Frootique). The mall is mainly centered around Pete's Frootique as a prime destination, and prime destination it is.. It's somewhat comparable to "Whole Foods" in the US albeit on a smaller scale, but it makes up for its small size with a huge variety of food items that you are unlikely to find anywhere else in the city. The mall also has a variety of the standard cell phone carrier stands, a (too?) small Indigospirit bookstore, Mark's work wearhouse, Hallmark etc. The food court is small but the quality and health consciousness of the non-chain food vendors here makes it a very attractive to stop by for a meal... especially if you enjoy fresh ingredients and want a break from the monotony and excessive food processing offered by the standard fast food chains.

It doesn't hurt that they stock one of my favourite Canadian jewelry designers, as well as my 2nd love of life - Manitobah Moccasins. I own 3 pairs, I'm obsessed. Everything in the store is Canadian made, so no need to worry about spending your hard earned bucks on supporting local, because this store covers all those bases. Which brings me to the price. You're not going to walk in here and pick something up on a whim. No, you're going to carefully stock that very expensive coat, visit it often, until you just can't leave without it. Like how I'm going to do with that Biko necklace, earrings, bracelet.. you get the idea. I'm gonna creep the crap out of that jewelry until it finally comes home with me some payday Friday, when I carefully budget my pay cheque to cut out grocery shopping. So don't go in here thinking it's just another clothing store. You're paying for some Canadians dedication and hard work. You're supporting someone's passion and their dreams. I'd rather spend my money that way, I might end up spending more, but there is a different satisfaction with spending your money wisely. Plus the quality of products they sell here is top shelf!

I don't like to buy suits from bulk-barn type stores like Tip Top or Moors because their stuff is geared towards older people and doesn't stand out. Yet, like most people in Halifax, I can't always afford the exuberant prices of exclusive brands carried by stores like Duggers. The Suitor was the best of both worlds. I was able to find the modern look and style I was looking for, and the pricing was perfect! The store is owned and operated by a Master Tailor who provides custom fittings for anything you buy. I bought a Calvin Klein suit with a french-cuffed Sean John shirt. I didn't like how the shirt looked on me and wanted a more 'slim fit' look. He took my measurements and custom-fitted the shirt within 24 hours. This little hidden gem of a store works mainly on word of mouth and has been for several years now. They can custom make a suit for you in any style you desire. Regardless of your body type, if you like the look of a particular luxury brand (like a Hugo, Canali, or Zegna suit), bring a picture and they'll make a suit for you just like it... but for a fraction of the price!

In the summer you'd be hard pressed NOT to see men in kilts and among street musicians, there will always be a bag piper or two. So it's natural to find a shop that caters to all things plaid from kilts to scarves and colors of Nova Scotia are reflected in its official tartan . Blue for the ocean, white for the surf, green for the forests, gold for the Royal Charter granted in 1621, and red for the Lion Rampant as seen in the Nova Scotia crest.. Wonderful reminders of a trip to Nova Scotia and this shop is ideally located in the heart of tourist Halifax - right in Privateers Wharf. And in case plaid is not your thing, what about a beautiful Irish hand knit sweater or Scottish pottery or Burns crystal to take home? They used to sell Haggis in a can, but apparently there are labeling issues and so...that's on hold for now.
