I encountered this individual (Steve Baker) of Procraft when he worked as a sub-contractor for the General Contractor I hired to remodel my house. I entered into a remodeling contract with Channel Islands ConstructionI and was billed on a Time and Material basis which violated the Home Improvement Act. I did not know as I don't live in the US and only discovered the reality when I was forced to consult a lawyer after being pestered by CIC to continue paying bills when I had already paid way beyond the budget. I was also never presented with a change order or even informed about any of the structural issues they claimed to have encountered on the job. Not only did the renovation took much more time than was contracted, I had to replace the crew and hired my own to finish the job when I discovered the irregularities in their billings. Regardless what the circumstances were, they should have consulted me and sought written permission to go forward with a task especially as they knew in advance the potential costs in the execution. Procraft was particularly tricky and I would caution anyone considering using this individual. It was due to Procraft's penchant for over-billing and truth-bending that CIC and I ended up in mediation. During the mediation, Procraft made claims that not only could not be substantiated but were right out lies - namely, that I demanded, sanctioned and authorized the changes in structural work that amounted to doubling of the budget. He claimed also that I was knowledgeable in the construction business which is fictional. Throughout the renovation process, CIC allowed Procraft to work and billed without supervision which resulted in a total labor cost of $160K on a project that had a budget of $270,500. I was out of the country and trusted these men who had seemed trustworthy at first. Lesson learned. I am sounding the alarm bells for anyone wishing to hire these guys to work on their projects. read more
