I had previously gotten a haircut at another salon and the stylist had messed up my hair really bad!! It was supposed to be a "v shaped" haircut but that wasn't how it turned out, sadly. I came to this salon and Cindy was able to fix my hair. She was really accommodating and so wonderful! She knows what she's doing and she was so good at explaining how she was going to save my hair without having to cut off a lot of length because I like my hair a bit longer. I came in for a haircut as a birthday present for my boyfriend. I had read the previous reviews, and was eager to see if the owner could work her magic on me. When I arrived, I was the only customer there. It was strange, as Saturdays are usually busy for hair salons. I was warmly greeted and seated for my consultation with Ginger, an older lady/master colorist/stylist. We decided on a shoulder length cut with layers, and I trusted her to do a good job, as I had heard nothing but good things. She had her assistant shampoo me. The assistant was rough with the shampooing and conditioning, the water temperature varied between too hot and too cold (never asked me how it felt) and the whole time she was talking to Ginger about her schedule/life. She also had these bangle bracelets that were jingling very loudly during my lathering. Not a pleasant experience. The cut was alright, but Ginger had to go back and snip several pieces that she left behind at the end. The cut was not what I had asked for (I wanted a piecey lob that hit at the collarbone with bangs, and I got a shoulder length cut with minimal layers and no bangs), and I felt that she was too sick (with allergies-tissues everywhere!) to try. So sad, I wish I could get it fixed, as i'ts my birthday weekend. :( read more

My hair has lived in San Francisco, Manhattan, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. This straight stick hair currently resides in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. which fortunately is the home of Profiles Hair Studio. Ginger, one of the owners, has made this uncooperative hair look snappy since 2008. It grows like Bamboo, fast. She gives me free bang trims (not that she'll give them to you :-) And she listens to what I am going for and delivers every time. The next sensational part beyond the incomparable Ginger is the clothing for sale. Yesterday I snagged well-priced, well-made easy to wear gorgeous outfits. Ginger showed me all the ways I could tie this and that making each look really fabulous! Had I shopped elsewhere I would have easily spent more than twice as much. We used this salon this past weekend for my sister's wedding. We did both hair and makeup. Ginger did my hair and she did a really good job. The hair style I wanted was a combination of a few different pictures I had and she was able to put them all together in one style. Melena did the make up. I told her the typical look I wear and the types of things I did/didn't want. I told her she was the expert and let her decide what would look good. She went based off of my skin tone, bone structure and face shape. The final look was really nice. $150 for hair and makeup (we were each charged that and there were five of us...we were there for about 4 hours). I haven't done this type of thing before so I had no idea if that was a decent price. read more

You're now just down the same little "alley" at the Morgan Court on Lincoln in Carmel By The Sea where I hang my shingle as well. Helen is the very best hair colorist ever !!! Now I get to just want down to see you Profiles once or twice a week ! Love it, and I love salon. It feels like a spa. Elegant, plenty "breathing" space and privacy for those oh so special Helen Birdsong's hilarious conversations. 3.5 stars. 4 bridesmaids came to Profiles to get our hair done for a wedding today. The service was spot on and the styling was great. The stylists did just what we asked. My only issue was with the pricing. I was quoted $75 to $125 for a blow out with up do. Since we needed to get to Big Sur quickly, 3 of us already had washed and dried our hair, so we just needed styling. 2 of us got up dos and 1 did not (just curled the hair). It was $100 each, not including tip. I know Big Sur is a small town and that we should expect tourist pricing. I totally get it. But $100 for a down do feels like a major rip off. Went in with a four person wedding party for hair and makeup based upon a locals recommendation. Helen and Malena were incredible and made for certain that all were pleased with results! Bride, mother of the groom, and both bridesmaids were very happy! Coloring was perfect as far as skin tone matching, lipstick, etc. We care for a bit more volume than some and they did great and were both a delight to talk too as well! I was having a small elopement ceremony in town and not from Carmel and was desperate to find a place to get my hair and makeup done. I stumbled upon Profiles Hair Studio and am I glad I did. I will say they were phenomenal. I wanted a very natural look but didn't want to do it myself. Nancy did such a great job on my makeup. It was amazing. She used just enough to make the pictures amazing but not too much that I looked like a doll. I was so happy with her work. Andrea also did my hair. I kept in down but wanted a beach wave. I was nervous because I didn't have any trial runs with these women but they gave me exactly what I wanted and I couldn't have been happier with the results. Thank you for making my day even more amazing! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for hair and makeup for a wedding. They also were not a small fortune like many others in town. Everyone who works there is fabulous, and Karen is a master when it comes to hair, I only let her cut my hair and fly out to see her because nobody is able to cut it the way she can. Her scissors are super sharp which means no frayed ends, and after experiencing dull shears, I will never go to anyone else but her. The art studio is beautiful and they carry great products, both hair care and make-up.When you're there you feel like you've known the ladies all of your life because they are so natural and nice. I only put one star because it doesn't let me put zero. My sister went here got her hair done by Ginger the owner. She did a horrible job my sister has beautiful brunette hair, she asked for a simple ombré, she came out with bright red roots with burgundy colored top and ashy blonde bottoms. She went back twice for her to fix it and she added 4 blonder highlights... Ginger told my sister she liked it and since it's winter it should be darker anyways... Since when does the hair stylist get to pick what they want to do to their clients hair. Don't go here unless you want nothing what you ask for! read more

I have to say that I've had one of the best haircuts ever at Profiles Hair Studio by Karen. Ginger is a color master as well. She did the most subtle and natural looking highlights and they use non toxic color! I've had my hair styled by Melena who is creative and has an amazing sense of current stylings as well as classic or even ethereal dos! It's a fun place to go and the girls are all super sweet and accommodating as well as professional. Lots of fun products and jewelry to buy too - I never walk out of there empty handed!! I love it at Profiles. Ginger and Melina are very talented and really listen to their clients. My mom and I have been clients there for about 2 years now (my longest hair dresser relationship to date). I started going there and then my mother saw how great my hair looked and started using them too. I am in my 20s and my mom is in her 50s and we are both very happy with their work every time we leave. They also use highest quality products while keeping the prices affordable!!! There is also a great boutique and makeup stand inside as well as an awesome art gallery located inside the salon. They have a great make up line that is very affordable and they have a wide range of clothing items that are super cute! They never push anything on me or my mom... yet we always find something fun to take home! I could go on and on about this place... but really I think you should try them out for yourself :) read more

While Melina is very talented, my first visit to the salon was in the hands of someone I was only later told is a contractor there and makes her own rules. After sitting through 4 hours of processing my hair 3 times, canceling an apptmt I had to be at, and then had to pay a missed apptmt fee for, since this "stylist" had my hair red instead of blonde, I will never go back or recommend this salon. I attempted to go back 2 1/2 weeks later to continue to neutralize some of the carrot colored cast she had put in my hair. And I was discouraged and told I needed to "let my hair rest". I was then told to call the a stylist on her personal cellphone. I did and she was drunk and kept asking me how a date went (of which I do not know what she was talking about) instead of how to make my appointment and get my hair right. I tried again by leaving a message on the salon voicemail the next day. No reply. I tried again 2 weeks later and made an appointment. When I became ill with the flu and missed the apptmt and called to explain I had been very sick, I didn't get a call back. I tried again 2 weeks later to make an appt, now 6 weeks out from my first time there, and was told I was not welcome there. And to call the stylist on her cell phone. When I explained my experience with this previously, I was told she was a contractor and that Melina was not her boss. Yet I reminded her of her observing this woman working on my hair and processing it 3 times and her own assurance they would make it right. Clearly this is not the case. Don't use Ally. And be careful with Melina. A highly distressful experience and unprofessional to say the least. read more

I almost settled on trying this salon from the reviews. Thankfully someone mentioned it is "dog-friendly". They have saved me a trip. I have nothing against dogs, but a personal grooming service where stylists will be touching you must remain very clean and allergy free, not to mention dogs bringing fleas into the salon.
