I've been at the school coming up on 6 years at this point. Everything I loved about the school is still going strong: * the close knit family where not only do you know everybody's name, but you know them as human beings * the camaraderie * the respect for everybody, their background and their current station in life * Tito's wealth of knowledge about situational awareness, tactics, biomechanical leverage * the focus on elevating everybody from where they are, and not on some abstract goal of where they should be (people aren't all too concerned about levels in the school, and more on deep experiential learning) The only thing I'd like to update from my initial review is that Progressive Krav Maga is no longer a part of the Krav Maga Global organization. The benefit of this change is that Tito is more free to impart his knowledge of best practices applicable for the streets and subways of NYC without being fettered by organizational bureaucracy from half a world away. read more

Been coming here for more than 3 months now. Absolutely love it here cause It feels like a little family, everyone is so welcoming. And the teaching is very detail orientated which helps strengthen basic techniques. I started Krav a year and a half ago without ever doing any material arts and was really surprise by how easily it was to pick it up. The reason why I love doing it cause I'm learning how to defend myself in actual real life situations also picking up various martial arts technique (muay thai, bjj, boxing... I've been going to Progressive Krav Maga for almost a year and I can honestly say that this is the best place that I've trained. I started taking Krav because I wanted to learn a realistic form of self-defense and while we do train jiu jitsu, muay thai and boxing techniques, Krav isn't a sport. We prepare for the street, where there are no rules and the odds are often not in your favor. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of MMA, but when you're faced with multiple attackers or an active shooter, sport style training will fall short. Tito is a knowledgeable teacher with real world experience. Class sizes are small compared to most schools in the city, which allows for more personal attention from instructors. Students treat each other with respect and Tito knows how to train us hard without compromising safety. The school just opened a 2nd location on the Upper East Side, so now there are more class options and days to train. With all of the crazy things happening in the world right now I'm grateful that I found this place! read more

Two words: Improvised Weapons!!! I have been a student for 1.5 years and Progressive Krav Maga remains the highlight of my week. This is my second review for this world-class school. Tito is the owner and head instructor. He is retired from the NYPD SWAT team. Tito is the real deal: a leader in the field who brings more than two decades of elite defensive tactics expertise. He explains techniques by explaining real life situations and how he defended himself. Most classes are punctuated with stories of the dangerous circumstances he's had to survive or de-escalate. They serve as a reminder that we are responsible for our own lives. Literally have never met another instructor who cares as much about each student's learning journey as much as Tito does. Also he is funny as hell. Teaches in a very humorous but real way. Tito is passionate about teaching people of all skill levels and abilities. As a woman, I especially appreciate how Tito adjusts techniques to my body type and strength level. Tuesday and Thursday are krav classes, where we spent one hour on techniques and pressure drills, and the second half on honing our striking/punching/kicking skills. Tito also incorporates the tactical pen into our training, which is easily accessible and much less "scary" to carry than a blade. I do also love our Wednesday evening Libre class, which is all about blade fighting. It's not for the faint of heart. The community of people in the class is awesome. The school is private, meaning Tito handpicks people who have a willingness to learn and will jive well together. I've made several good friends here. Learning ways to survive a violence encounter has been incredibly empowering. This school has made me stronger not only physically, but mentally. read more

I have a background in Taekwondo and have done a tiny amount of BJJ. I wanted a more practical Martial Art for self defense because I realized I had no idea what to do if someone were to attack me with a knife or gun. I got exactly what I came for. Tito is incredibly experienced and demonstrates the techniques in a clear, practical, and often humorous way. He's not afraid to tell you when you're doing something completely wrong, and he will work with you until you get it right. He encourages the more advanced students to help the newer students learn the techniques, which is one of the best ways to enforce what you learn. By teaching the newbies, the older students reinforce their understanding of what they already know. It sets up a great cycle of helping out and general camaraderie. The class size is just small enough for individual attention and just big enough to feel like you have a good pool of students to practice with. I do wish we did a little more sparring and grappling so that I could get a little more experience fighting in real time, but I'm sure that will come with time when I'm ready. Overall, I've had an incredible experience since joining two months ago. I look forward to every class, and it hurts me whenever I have to miss a class. read more

I love Progressive Krav Maga! I've been a member for about 8 months now and can't say enough good things about the school. Tito, the instructor, brings practicality to the classes and always comes up with creative drills to take our training to the next level. He incorporates things he's learned as a former cop and shares real life experiences. I think the best way to judge a school is to see the quality of the students and it's very clear that our students are top notch fighters. The environment at the school is welcoming and humble and very family like. Classes are on the smaller side so you always get individual attention and Tito will modify techniques for you where needed. My girlfriend and I joined class in spring 2017. She had no martial arts experience and I had a few years under my belt, but Tito's classes are small and adequately staffed so that every skill level is challenged to improve. The class attendees themselves range from beginners to lifelong, multidisciplinary practitioners. Sessions rotate focus on stand-up kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Filipino martial arts, and weapon defenses across blades, sticks, and guns. Everyone makes an honest effort to improve one another. The classes not only help your technique, but I've watch my girlfriend's general demeanor, confidence, and bravery skyrocket over just 6 months. Progressive Krav Maga is one of the best martial arts school in the city, I've been to many martial arts school in the city looking for the right place to invest my money for personal growth, and I've been here over a year. I'm going to steal Billy Z.'s formatting because it's just easier to write that way. Thanks Billy! The instructor: Tito is a one of a kind instructor, you won't find many instructor like him, who is knowledgeable in different martial/combat arts (Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Krav Maga). What I like about this is he will not say Boxing is the best, BJJ is the best, or Muay Thai is the best, he will say what's best is what gets you out of trouble and can save your life or your loved ones. Not only does he have over 30 years of experience in combat/martial arts and self-defense training, Tito has over 20 years in law enforcement. Many instructors out there can say this works or this doesn't work, but Tito experienced things first hand so he knows what works and what doesn't work. Anyone can watch a video or read a book and say this works, but have you've test it in a real life situation? Tito is also a very hands on instructor, meaning he will be in class teaching you. He won't be in his office or have a senior student teach you, he will be the one teaching you and correcting you. Every class I've been to, Tito has always taken his time and check on every one of his student to make sure they understand what is being taught, he will explain things in details and concepts which helps me visualize how the technique should be done. A lot schools will teach you techniques, but not the application or when it should be used. Overall Tito is one of the top instructors around, not only is his quality in teaching is great he is dedicated. Him just commuting to teach us show how much dedication he has. It takes him 2+ hours to get to the school and then 2+ hours to get back home, and Tito always comes to class to teach. The school: The school has a great atmosphere, where everyone is friendly and is there to help each other. I've been to school where my fellow classmates had ego problems and felt like when I got to class it was a competition and not a comfortable learning environment. I've been here for over a year, and everyone has the same goal which is personal growth and the growth of your peers. The class size isn't jam pack, which mean Tito is able to gauge everyone's ability. The quality of the school and training is kept on a high standard. I've been to a school where it's so crowded where I was doing things half ass or plain wrong and no one would correct me until several weeks later, and by then I've already developed a bad habit and would have to relearn the technique. Not here though, Tito or your peers will catch you if you make a mistake and you'll learn your mistakes right before it can develop into a bad habit. Overall the school is a great!!! Every class I come out learning new things, experiencing new things, learning more about myself and my abilities, and I would recommend the school to anyone from all sorts of levels, beginner, intermediate, and advance. Personally: I've been doing martial arts for over 10+ years, mostly traditional martial arts like Kung Fu Wu Su, Wing Chun, Filipino Martial Arts, Ba Gua Zhang, and Muay Thai. Even though I had practiced all of these things and for long duration, I didn't feel totally comfortable defending myself in the streets because of unknown elements such as a weapons (knives and gun), multiple attackers, and etc. I always felt uncertain and looked for a school that offered realistic self/street defense. I went to a few Krav Maga schools and most of them lack realism and when I left the class I didn't feel confident, however at Progressive Krav Maga it was the total opposite. I didn't have to wait for X amount of months or years to get a taste of how to defend against weapons or multiple attackers, my 2nd class I learned what to do if I was pinned to the floor and my attacker was on top of me with a knife stabbing at me. I never had training in groundwork, so when I got to the floor I didn't know what to do. Progressive Krav Maga has taught me so much not only self/street defense, but about me. I've been to schools that would take my money and would milk me so I can advance or learn more or just keep taking my money even if I wasn't learning anything. There was a school that I spent several thousands of dollars on, and I made a promise to myself not to be fooled again. Now when I look for a school I know exactly what to look for and Progressive Krav Maga meets my standard. I was looking to learn Krav Maga for self-defense and selected this school based on the reviews others had posted -- and they're completely accurate. I've been going for about four months now, and have loved the experience. There really is a family-like atmosphere, and the more experienced students are happy to help you out in improving your technique (in addition to plenty of one on one time with the instructor). The structure of the lessons is particularly effective as well -- warming up with the fundamentals that weave throughout the techniques you need to know. Tito is a fantastic instructor who gives lots of personal attention to each student, watching them as they do each technique and making corrections as needed. His criticisms are always precise and easy to understand (nothing vague like 'use more power,' but rather specific instructions for how to move your body to generate more.) Progressive Krav Maga provides the perfect mix between practical knowledge and self-defense techniques. Henoch has been applying krav maga techniques for years while keeping the streets of NYC safe and is now passing on his knowledge through this school. The classes are atypical in that they are two hours, but by the end, the extra time pays off as you definitely feel more confident about being able to better defend yourself. I cannot heap enough praise on PKM. Before the end of my first class I felt completely at ease and accepted by my classmates and Tito (instructor). Tito manages to strike a perfect balance between formal technique and practical, real-world application of Krav Maga. Whenever anyone struggles with a new skill, needs a slight adjustment to their form or (for the more advanced students) needs to be pushed harder, Tito immediately picks up on it and will provide one-on-one instruction.
