We had purchased a home where Project Automate (Josh) previously installed a Crestron system. Josh came out to provide us with an estimate for some additional work. Since then, he has essentially ghosted us in transferring over the Crestron system to our ownership because we did not hire him for the additional projects and decided to go with another vendor. Should we not receive a transfer of the system within the next few days, we will plan to file a civil suit against Project Automate. Part of the reason we didn't hire Josh is echoed in the reviews below - if he doesn't feel that he can upsell you on all possible unnecessary projects, he simply ghosts you. "Customer service" is also outsourced to an external third-party call center, so you usually have no way of getting in touch with him. I recommend looking elsewhere for your AV needs. read more

The worst possible experience you can imagine. Spent over $300,000 on a home AV system with Josh and Project Automate. Josh was never able to get the system working properly and it was filled with bugs and other issues. Josh then resorted to creating fraudulent invoices claiming that he came to my home and performed services when he never did so. Plain and simple fraud. When he was called put the fraudulent invoices, Josh sabatoged our system and cut off all our wifi access points. As a result of Josh's incompetence and malicious actions we have to hire another AV company to come in and take over the job. We are filing a civil lawsuit in superior court against Josh and his company and will update this review with the status of the case. read more

I've been working with Josh and the team at Project Automate for nearly 2 years as we bring our 1936 colonial home into the 21st century. To say I'm impressed and grateful would be an understatement. When we started this project and I was working to find every penny to save I could (doesn't everyone when renovating?), Josh was helpful in guiding me as we laid the foundation for a system we could expand on down the line, without compromising initial functionality or creating cost headaches later. I can now attest to this attention to detail 19 months later as we make our second big investment in our home with Project Automate at the helm. In terms of continued service, PA is hands on, ultra-fast on response times, and attentive when service is required be it virtual such as driver upgrades or in person and more substantial. Josh takes his job, and the final product seriously, and you won't be disappointed. Automating a classic home without gutting it is no small feat, and Josh and his team have been amazing at every step of the way as we work to make this house a smarty pants without compromising her timeless style. read more

Where do I begin. Upon completion of the project, which I was initially told was a fixed price contract, Josh Trevithick (owner) decided to add roughly $2k to the bill claiming the install of 4 light switches took 6.5 hours longer than it should've. Ignoring the fixed price, the extra hours are due to the fact their employees got high at lunch and came back to meander around the house for seemingly no reason other than to rack up a larger bill. Installing 4 light switches should take 1-2 hours tops (including programming) and only about 20 mins for the switches themselves (ask any electrician). They stuck around for nearly a full day (were it not for them showing up 1.5 hours late and taking a 90 minute lunch). Now I don't care in the slightest if anyone gets high, or works at a snails pace, when I have a fixed price contract. But I absolutely care if I'm supposed to pay for this, especially at $225/hour. Why they needed 2 employees to install 4 light switches is also beyond me. Next, they severed communication to my home camera systems, and didn't fix or resolve the issue forcing me to spend hours on the line with the camera company to reset the system and reconnect. Their solution was to tell me my camera system sucks and I should probably buy one from them. It didn't suck before I hired PA, it doesn't suck after I've fixed it. These are just more of the bottom feeder tactics employed by Project Automate. Additionally, they decided to change product (added larger TV mounts) without any notice or request. I haven't measured the installed mounts yet, but I do suspect they may have easily just told me they're larger when in fact they aren't, knowing most customers would never question it. But either way, even if they did in fact install larger ones, it wasn't required for my TV's which all but 1 were sized for the smaller mounts (which you can get for less than half the price from Best Buy instead of purchasing through Project Automate). I also didn't realize installing a slightly larger mount would also cost an additional $50 in labor per mount, on top of the higher cost for each mount. Same 4 screws to install right? Yet more labor? Makes no sense. Keep in mind, this is after they first came to the house, saw all the TV's that needed to be mounted, and knew what products would be suitable in order to present me an initial quote. I was only notified of this unnecessary change in product when a final bill was presented. Finally, I was told these extra "charges" could be waived if I decided to do more work with the company - specifically install blinds. Upon addressing all of the aforementioned issues, they were ignored simply asking when they could perform more work and how quickly they could get started on the blinds. Seems to me this is a practice they use to try and force customers into using them again in the future. Next came the legal threats when I asked for the bill to be corrected. Instead, what they did was delete the old bill from the system, create a brand new one so I could never access the old bill, and the new bill has no detail in the line items, just a price, not associated with any of the claimed work. It may be worth noting, I work in music and technology, and generally speaking, I know how most of these things work. I can tell when I'm being fleeced (many in music use similar tactics), and this seems to be one of those cases. These guys are completely dishonest, and get away with it because most of the work they do is behind a closed Control 4 system, which people generally don't have access to, so they can lie and tell you anything to raise their price. Save yourself the headache and cost. Will never use PA again and advise you to do the same. P.S. I NEVER write reviews. This may in fact be the first - certainly the first negative one I can recall. I have way better things to do with my time and just don't care enough. But when someone is this egregious and this dishonest, I've got to share my experience and hopefully help someone else steer clear of the headache. read more

I have decided to amend my review back to a 3-star because of Josh's follow up! I will say that he offered to pay for the electrician work and that was admirably of him. So, I think a 3 star is warranted given he did missed the outlet situation. But I must say that he was very professional, on time and had a great personality. BEWARE of Project Automate and it's owner Josh! We hired josh to take over our our control 4 system a few years ago and his tactics have gone from bad to worse over that time. I have dealt with a lot of companies in my experiences as a tenant and homeowner and josh is probably the worst and most unethical service provider I have dealt with. Where do I start? First of all, try looking up the price of any equipment he tries to sell you on amazon before buying through him. He will charge you WAY more than what the items actually cost. Second, he will use ANY excuse to charge you for a visit. Even the most simple question and he would insist on coming or sending someone. Third, he literally STOLE equipment we had bought from him (took it while we had a tenant living there without our permission even though he knew it belonged to us since he sold it to us) and then charged us a fortune to replace it when the tenant moved out. Fourth, at one point he insisted we pay a ridiculous invoice within 24 hours of receiving or he would turn off our service (knowing this would cause an issue as we were in the midst of selling the house). Turns out, threats like this are against his contract with Control 4. Josh is rude, unprofessional, unethical and one of the most blatantly ruthless, money hungry people I've ever hired (including my time overseeing both new construction and a renovation). I can not recommend enough looking elsewhere before hiring him or project automate. You will save yourself a lot of money and headaches. read more

Revised Review 7-15-15: Professional and did a good job installing the hardware - no qualms about that. If you ever need service/tech after your first 18 months, you're on your own. Granted, I changed my Wifi router which has nothing to do with Josh but when I requested his service to get it running again, he brushed me off to a website to fend for myself. I Called a few times to get an appointment, only to get his voicemail. Leaving texts and voicemail messages to schedule a time with no acknowledgement of receipt did not set well with me. I felt as though I was a bother to him - plain and simple. When I call blocked the number by *67, he conveniently answered by saying that he was very busy. Fully prepared to pay for his time, his approach toward this situation made me feel as though my issue of MY PERSONAL HOME SECURITY was below him. I'm in sales and even if busy, never ignore your customer - regardless how big or small the sale may be! Ultimately, I paid the local computer store to make a house call for my port forwarding issue. Josh with Project Automate was outstanding. He made sure we knew exactly what we were getting. The Control4 home automation demo kit he came to our home with put an actual Control4 system in our hands. I was able to choose a cable, Blu-ray, Apple TV, play music from my iPhone, and stream services like Pandora too. This was so valuable to me as I am not the most tech savvy person. Who doesn't want to know how it works before they buy? After the project was completed the system was able to control everything, from the whole house audio and video system in every room, lights in the theater, climate control, security system, our draperies, front gate, even our swimming pool and sprinkler system. I was even able to see the security cameras we have at our front door while on vacation in Paris. When everything was complete, he made sure the whole family was confident to utilize every feature of the system. So often in the past I was overwhelmed with a complicated system I rarely used because I forgot how to use it.
