Ted K.

Run the other way from this company! Though some of their individual workers are good, decent people (taken on their own), I would not want to have any representative of ProKleen ever in my home again. In July we had a fire in our kitchen, torching our appliances, scorching our cabinets, singeing the vinyl floor, and significant smoke damage throughout. We contacted 4-5 different restoration businesses and ProKleen were the first to respond. Others took over a week, and said it'd take over a month before they could even start work. When ProKleen's estimator came and said they could probably be done in 4 to 6 weeks, we signed the paperwork -- which, to our chagrin (we found out later), indicated they could take up to 90 days to finish. Initially they showed up early, and did their work competently enough (cleaning, flooring replacement, cabinet removal, painting). But it began to drag out. They would say they were coming and then not show up. I would call and get no answer. Leave message after message and get no reply. Days, and weeks would go by with no contact whatsoever, not even to make an excuse for blowing off an appointment. The Covid-19 pandemic was going on, so I made allowances, doing my best to be patient. To do otherwise would help nobody. During all this time, I was having to take my wife to doctors for burn treatments a few times a week (results from the kitchen fire). Time went by and, although frustrated by the situation, I did not let it affect my dealings with them. I had other things on my mind. Well, towards the end of their 90 days they finally showed up with the replacement cabinetry (which they kept promising us was being custom-made elsewhere). Well, it was not at all what we had expected. It was not like our old hand-painted solid oak cabinetry in quality, materials, or kind...or even size. It was modular, cheaply-made, plastic-laminated particle board, painted to match our old cabinet color and arranged to create a similar basic outline. As they were going up I could tell it was not at all equivalent to what we'd had, and finally spoke up. Earlier on, I had made my preferences clear -- I would very much prefer to simply have our old cabinets stripped, sanded, repainted, and reinstalled. We had only just redone the kitchen a couple of years prior and, having done all the work myself, was not sure "new" cabinets would match. The installer, timidly agreed with me, and called his boss, Jason about it. I was within hearing range of both parties of the phone conversation, and when informed that the cabinets were wrong, and that I was not happy, Jason (ProKleen's owner, who did not know I was nearby) said "Well, that's tough, this is the way we do things. This is what they are getting." At that point I went "Ahem. I'm here in the room." and tried to explain the obvious differences between the old cabinets and new, and he just basically said "If you don't like it, your lawyer can call my lawyer, and we'll see how that goes." That was the end of the phone call. The poor installer, who also confessed to not having ever installed this kind of cabinet before, proceeded to hurry up try to finish the job. He installed the knobs in the wrong place (not matching all the other cabinets in the room). Another (more senior) worker showed up to help him and they made more progress, but soon realized that the new cabinets did not have the crown molding on top that every other cabinet in the kitchen had. Oops. At this point I should probably mention that weeks earlier, during all the delay of waiting for the new cabinetry to arrive, I called and told them to just bring the old cabinets back and I'd reinstall them and repaint them myself -- to which they informed me that this could not be done, since the old cabinets had already been discarded. Imagine my surprise when I found out that their solution (on that final day) to the lack of the crown molding was to go back to their shop and somehow "find" the old cabinets, detach the crown molding, and bring it here to to glue and staple on to the top edge of the new ones. In other words, they lied the whole time regarding the old cabinets being "gone". I don't know which worker was responsible, but when almost finished, it became evident that there was not enough old molding to finish the job. Between the different sizes of the old and new cabinets, there was left a 3/4" gap at one corner where two pieces should have met. Their solution was to put some random pieces of molding in the hole and cover it up with blue masking tape (telling me to leave the tape on for at least 24 hours for glue to set). What I found 28 hours later was a mess. I have photos of it. There's lots more to this sad tale. There's dishonest billing (for phony services not rendered). Pressuring me to sign-off anyway to bilk the insurance company for same, and threats to put a lien on my home if I did not. Need I say more? Hire ProKleen at your own risk. They are bad news.
