I don't think we went on the best night (we went the day before Thanksgiving break, so I feel like they were especially short staffed, what with also having a sign up for open positions and going during dinner rush). So I didn't have that attentive staff that the others are raving about and I though my food could have been executed a bit better, but honestly, I feel like I could get a much better experience if I went on a different night, so don't pay me any mind. But that said, I feel like there were some really good flavors going on. I got 2 tacos, and my partner got a burger. The (smallish) burger was heavily adjusted to my partner's tastes, and I didn't try it, so I can't give any recommendations on that, but he asked for no mustard, and apparently they forgot to take it off, but remembered in time to scrape it off the bun. This was a bit disappointing, and I really feel like they should have gotten a new bun altogether, but he said it was very good, because it had this "tangy" flavor, which I suspect was the slight hint of mustard (which he never gets), but I didn't try it, so what do I know. :) I did steal some plain, regular fries, which were excellent, though. I got a license to krill and ranch hand tacos, and they honestly had really good flavors, but I really would have loved a little more attention to detail- (ex: the beef was a bit overdone and cut with the grain.) I know I tend to not go to places for second visits, but from what I've seen, I can say it's a solid place to try, and I can definitely see getting the same experience as the others on another night. read more

There is an interesting pattern to restaurants in downtown Bryan: often it is the physical space that is the best aspect of the restaurant. I've seen this in Europe: you pay a premium to eat mediocre food in a magnificent, opulent setting. Venice in particular plays this game better than anyone. Except Venice this aint, ya know? Caffe Capri, Papa Perez, Murphy's Law, Downtown Uncorked...doubtless I'm missing some, but you get the idea. The beautiful and/or interesting space distracts you from the fact that you really aren't eating or drinking anything that interesting. So, as someone else said, Monkey's OK. Staff are friendly enough as is proto-hipster vibe here (A Dave Matthews reference seems kinda outdated). The bar is cool looking but the mixology talents of the folks behind it are limited. There is good bottled and canned beer here in abundance, but nothing on tap. Food is all about burgers and tacos. Actually the tacos aren't too bad, and they will sub out flour for corn if you ask, as I always do. I like their portabello taco and the pork one quite a bit. Burgers are decent enough too but there are better burgers in town. The fried yucca is interesting as are the sauces with it. I don't do carbs, but on rare occasions I'll try something unusual, and you don't see yucca a lot, do you? Fries are ok. Its a decent enough stop on a downtown Bryan crawl, but not a place you really feel the need to linger. read more

Oh sweet tap dancing Jesus, this place is phenomenal. The chorizo burger. Get it with fresh avocado slices. Just do it. Also, best sweet potato fries I've ever had. Haven't had a thing from their menu I didn't love. Great beer selection, friendly bartenders, GREAT service from this gorgeous girl named Bri. Give that girl a raise. Can't see why anyone would complain about this place, unless you just get impatient and expect 1-3 bartenders to wait on you and 20 other guests, hand and foot. The food here was good. Much better than what you might call bar food. I had a burger and a taco while my wife had a few tacos. We both enjoyed our meals and food. The service was good and it was a nice clean establishment. We will be returning and think it is a place to check out. We went with our 15 month old son and he had some of our tacos. Fantastic local eatery that fits in perfectly in the new downtown Bryan. They have a great vibe as both a casual restaurant and a bar. They have great food and a pretty good drink selection. I've never had a problem with the service and the staff all seem friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The burgers are great, every one of them. I've tried is well crafted and has a great combination of flavors. The tacos are also excellent, but make sure to order two if you have an appetite, and they are pretty messy. Another great menu item is the fries. They serve them seasoned a few different ways and they're all quite good, especially if you get them with monkey sauce. I'd rather eat a pulled-pork taco here than anywhere else in the world. I get ONE with a small order of super-crispy fries (sounds like a wierd combo, but it works) and leave stuffed. I don't go for the sports or the beer. In fact several of my friends go here for a quiet ladies' lunch, and Proudest Monkey delivers. Staff is always wonderful, too. read more

Very awkward experience. Good: food was delicious, great beer selection, good beer knowledge (guided me to a great "sour"). Bad: incompetent front of the room staff, overcharged, did not clean table even when requested to do so. We arrived with 6 diners (3 adults + 3 high school students) Understood first-come/first-served as we called prior to arrival to try and make reservations. Restaurant was small with only 3 tables that could be configured. Upon arrival two of the 3 tables were pushed together to accommodate a party of 8 (paying their bill) leaving a single table of 4. We decided to wait. Subsequent to our arrival another party of 6 arrived (all college students/20's) During this wait period we were informed that we better be on our toes as the restaurant did not get involved in seating folks. We communicated that this seemed unfair and asked to speak to the manager. She echoed the same protocol to which we communicated that a policy that would allow us to get "bullied" by another party seemed unfair. Rather than get in a contest with the new party of 6 for the table we split our party between one table and the bar. All this was quite awkward and seemed silly that a small restaurant could not manage their only 3 tables. Finally, two of the adults ordered beers. When they arrived and were tasted both realized that they were served each other's beers. We requested that we be re-served the correct beers and this was done and the first round was removed. When I got home, I discovered that we were charged for the extra beer! Again, great food and beer but manager and waitress need to be educated in the business. read more

GET THE YUPPY FRIES! I had the El Jefe burger and yuppy sweet potato fries. My fiancée had the Willie Norris burger and yuppy Idaho potato fries. Everything we ate was 11/10 delicious and the service was excellent! The only flaw I can find in this place is that the staff is too friendly if there is such a thing! So went here last night for some people watching and a few drinks. Didn't dabble in the food. But the people watching was good. That was the extent of good. Got two drinks of double vodka and cran. Let's say pretty sure they were virgin. I would suggest ordering shots and whatever the mix is separate and make the cocktail yourself to make sure you get what $20 pays for. The server was great enjoyed him he was attentive. My suggestion even for a local hangout that this place be passed by there are several other places that can be walked to and get a real drink. I enjoyed visiting the Proudest Monkey. It was a little hard to find for an out of towner. Look next to the marque for the little monkey on the door. We tried 4 tacos between two of us, fish, shrimp, pulled pork and beef. Our waiter, Jonathan, had the kitchen cut the tacos in two for ease of sharing. All of them were tasty with good fresh veggies and juicy meat. All of them had a little heat. Only the pulled pork served with fresh jalapenos slices was overwhelmingly hot. My companion who usually likes spicy food, bit the jalapeno and regretted it. We also got the Yucca and plantain fries. The plantains were sweet, and the yucca was nicely starchy. We tried both with the mayo based monkey sauce, and were very pleased. The service was a little slow at first (they were crowded.) Once the place cleared out we had impeccable attentive service. I didn't taste anything that could be described as a grease bomb, just juicy and fresh. Next time I'm in Bryan, I won't hesitate to go back. read more

I was very impressed by the atmosphere (feels like you're in a trendy neighborhood of some big city, not a small farm town) and the food was good.
