I intended to meet a friend at a more off the beaten path place, but they were closed for a private event, so we walked the square and Provecho looked good. Table for two on a Thursday in September at 5:30 was no issue. I had a great time here, caught up with a friend, the setting is fantastic and the service was 10/10. Very nice dishware, chairs, tables, everything. One dish was a 10/10 - the short rib, scallop, poblano grits. Those were probably the best grits I've ever eaten. Seasoned really nicely. Small guacamole was definitely enough for two people. We got it with the pineapple, mango habanero on top and it really added nothing to the experience. Made it harder to eat and I got no habanero spice at all. Guac needed some salt, but chips were really good. We got a seasonal tomato dish with some crunchy corn like stuff on top. Was good. Not super memorable but needed some vegetables. Our other dish was the Brazilian coconut chicken. Chicken/sauce was very blah. Not much flavor and our two chicken legs were cooked too long. A Slow cooked chicken would be better as would an improved coconut sauce flavor. The grilled vegetables and rice with it were better than the meat. We also had a couple drinks each and everything was great. They do happy hours, but we wanted some stuff not on that happy hour menu. You want what you want. This restaurant was not super loud half full, but if packed it would probably be quite loud. They did accommodate us with two separate checks. Wine was good. Margarita de Casa was great. Plenty of salt on the rim, just I like. Maybe a little too much ice or it was so good that I sucked it down quickly. Chips and salsa was offered with one, two, or three types of salsa. The cost of the salsa depended on how many different you order. They ranged from mild to hot. The 1/2 pound of Carnitas was enough for two to share. Since I wasn't sharing, I had plenty for leftovers. The carnitas had a little too much fat for me. It was difficult to see the fat due to the lighting. The LED lighting above the table flickered. The hostess pointed it out and said she would take care of it. She didn't remedy it even after I reminded her. The shrimp tacos were good but they were not evenly portioned with ingredients across the three tacos. Restaurant was cozy and dark. It set a nice mood. read more

I have been to Provecho several times in the past and have always had wonderful experiences, which makes this review especially disappointing. I chose Provecho for my 30th birthday dinner because I trusted the quality of both the food and service. Unfortunately, this visit completely missed the mark. We were a party of six, and our bill was just under $1,000 including tip. At that price point, I expect attentive and organized service, but that was not our experience. We started with empanadas and specifically ordered certain varieties. Instead, we were brought an assortment that wasn't what we requested, and no one explained which filling was in each empanada, so everyone was left guessing. The drinks were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. Throughout dinner, every time food was delivered, the servers asked our table who had ordered what. It felt like there was very little communication between staff members, and we had to help distribute every course ourselves. That's something I wouldn't expect at a restaurant of this caliber. The most disappointing part was my birthday celebration. My mom and uncle had arranged in advance for a birthday surprise. After dinner, nothing came out until my mom had to remind the staff, which unfortunately ruined the surprise. We were then presented with a wooden board that simply said "Happy Birthday" in raspberry sauce, my name was misspelled, and there was no dessert. Everyone at the table was genuinely confused because we didn't know if that was the surprise or if something else was coming. We ultimately had to order dessert ourselves and remind the staff again to bring it out. What should have been a seamless birthday celebration became awkward and disappointing. To top it off, when we wanted a few family photos, it was difficult to even find our server because she had already disappeared after the check. I still think Provecho has excellent food, which is why this experience was so disappointing. Unfortunately, the service fell far below what I'd expect from a restaurant at this price point. I left feeling that a milestone birthday deserved much better attention to detail, and sadly I won't be returning. read more

In 2023, I set a goal to visit one "new-to-me" Mexican restaurant each month. And for the final restaurant of 2023, Provecho did it not disappointment! The hubby and I found Provecho on Google and it had an average of 4.5 in reviews. It took only 20 minutes to get to the restaurant from the WonderLights in Merrillville. Provecho is in the Historic Downtown area of Crown Point. It's a really nice and trendy area. The night we visited was super cold and windy, and we walked about 1 1/2 blocks to get there. Street parking can be tight. Of course when we left, there were tons of parking spots! Thankfully no reservation was needed and we were seated right away. Unfortunately, we were seated across from the exit door to get to the outdoor igloos. Yes, igloos, where people can dine and drink outdoors in heated igloos. We would get a quick bursts of cold air from time to time. We had long sleeves so it wasn't too bad. Our waitress was phenomenal, knew the menu very well, and gave nice suggestions. I had a nice view of the kitchen area and wood burning stove. I was happy with our choices from the menu. The best thing I ate was the Short Ribs and Scallops over Poblano Grits! Wow! Just wonderful! Holy wow!! The food here is amazing! My husband and I came here with our daughter and another couple. To start we had the chips and salsa, avocado fries and two kinds of empanadas. I could not eat about six that were not opened all the way and still raw. The sauce and the ones that were cooked were excellent. I cut them some slack on the review since the Osso Buco was so good. What a fabulous find in Crown Point! First, it is a lovely restaurant. The brick, the colors and the table settings were all rustic but not so harmonious that it was overdone. We opted for small plates to share between the two of us. The guacamole was excellent with generous bits of mango and pineapple. The Cuban empanadas were probably some of the best I've ever had. Filling to crust ration was as optimal. Just enough sauce on top to add flavor but not make it soggy. Make sure to get the Brussels sprouts! With chunks of potatoes and cauliflower, it was probably my favorite of the night. The Brussels sprouts were tender but not mushy. Oh, and the sauces on top were so good!!!! I also had a tropical mocktail. Very well balanced. Our only disappointment was the A5 Wagyu Pincho. Wagyu should have marbled fat that is "melted". This was a chunk of meat that my knife couldn't cut through. The fat came off as super chewy and unpleasant. I ate two bites to give it a chance but choked down the second one so I did not eat anymore of the dish. (I did drag a Brussel sprout through the sauce because that was so good!) Hubby had some ice cream to end his meal. Service was outstanding! Everyone knew the menu and had great suggestions. I'd definitely go back but maybe skip the beef for different proteins. read more

We made a reservation for Saturday night to dine at Provecho. There is a $5pp fee when reserving online. When we arrived, the place was busy. The tables were spaced out well due to covid. We started off with empanadas. Our waitress recommended the chicken tinga and then we also ordered the ribeye. The chicken tinga had a fried plantain as the outer layer and it was one of the best empanadas that I have had! The ribeye was delicious as well, but I enjoyed the chicken tinga so much! Next we got the mussels and filet mignon. The mussels tasted fresh. It's hard to find good seafood in northwest Indiana so I was surprised that I would like the mussels so much! We ordered filet mignon medium rare and it was cooked to perfection! Charred on the outside and pink on the inside. You can tell it was cooked over a wooden stove. I ordered the New Age wine and it was one of the best wines I have had in a while. It was crisp and not too sweet. Very refreshing. The only disappointment I had was the Mexican Hot Chocolate. It was luke warm and I couldn't taste any of the spices or cinnamon. This wasn't bad enough to take down a star though as the hot chocolate was still good! Service was great! Food was delicious. We have lived in the Crown Point area for decades but have never tried Provecho. Tonight we decided to do so and are happy we did. First, this is not Mexican food but as the name suggests, Latin food. There are dishes that lean to Mexico but there are influences of Spain and Central America. My wife had Snapper. Are very healthy portion of Snapper served on Rice with Asparagus. The coating was light and flavorful. I chose Mussels and Clams. They were served in a moderately spicy broth with garlic toast. A delightful entrée. We enjoy wine and the wine list, though not long, has a number of very good selections at sensible prices. Service was good and we were certainly not rushed through dinner.
