I like the food so much to the point that I want to come back today again but I just realized it is closed today. The service was superb. The waiter was attentive and nice. The ambiance is warm and it portrays an art gallery of some nice paintings of Perú. I like one in particular, the cholita walking along her llama. This restaurant is a hidden gem in Highland. Wow the food is good and the service (carry out) was phenomenal. Everything was labeled and we had instructions to know what goes together in our order. (See photos) We tried more of the Peruvian dishes which were a nice surprise. I would love to dine in for the food to be the freshest but we loved just about everything. The talapia was tasty. Although it was cold when we got home, I added them into my air fryer and crisped them up. Voilà! Awesomeness. The appetizers we chose were the potato and the tamale. WOW! I could make them a meal. The size is larger than I expected. The risotto - WOW! This was by far the best meal of the night!!! It was rich and creamy and fresh tasting. The chicken was also just as amazing. It lasted for a while other day since the portions are on the larger size you may have some leftovers. The only dish we were disappointed with was the Civiche. I think the accoutrements overpowered the seafood. And it wasn't the best taste in our opinion. But you can't go wrong with everything else. Thanks Jose's!!! read more

Im Peruvian and the first bite brought me back home to my roots. We order Lomo. Which is a plate with steak, fries and rice ..mmm service was good, Portion was perfect. I only wish they would sell Tallarín verde (Green spaghetti) it's a delicious! green pesto sauce ( made with spinach and white cheese, ) with a breaded fried steak with red onions salsa and potato. read more

I visited Jose's this week to try their Highland Restaurant Crawl Special of a pork chop and rice for $5. Keep in mind all of the participating restaurants were offering $5 specials for the night, and their specials were discounted items from their existing menus. This was nothing like that. I was presented with a 1/2" chop as big as the palm of your hand, and cooked until it was shoe leather. There was also about a cup of insignificant rice. The chop was also mostly fat, and what was meat was hard and basically inedible. If it was spiced, I tasted nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't think the restaurant wanted this to be my introduction to their food, so before writing this review, I contacted them via Facebook. I wanted to give them the chance to redeem themselves. I thought they would want to give me something to pull me back, even a small discount, but no. Their answer was that this is Peruvian cooking, and I should just come back and try some more. Now...if you were presented with that sad pork chop, what in the world would make you want to go back?? I've seen other negative Yelp reviews for Jose's as well which makes me think someone from there either doesn't care, or has too big of an ego to admit when something went wrong. I told them they might want to reconsider their choice of food offerings for the next Restaurant Crawl as this is prime advertising, and it shouldn't be wasted. Hopefully they will heed my advice. Until then, I would seek out one of the many other, better choices in the area for dinner. Pass on Jose's. read more

I'm a business traveler that eats out probably a few hundred times a year. Half of that is some pretty expensive fine dining. I'm also a hobby home cook. So I've got a pretty refined pallet. This night I was just looking for a local greasy spoon. I just wanted to eat , her back to my room and work. I drove by BDubs, several fast food joints and then I saw this little "Main Street" type area. I flipped a u turn and drive down this street. A sports bar, a pizzeria, a beer joint, and then down the block I saw some more lights so I drove another block. And there was Jose's. Right next to a Mexican restaurant. A Peruvian Italian restaurant. What? Almost empty on this Tuesday night I ventured in. Was pleasantly greeted with a smile and a "You can sit anywhere." Perfect. Just what I was looking for. Home town family owned greasy spoon. I ordered the Chicken Marsala with double vegetables. When it came I could tell right away that the vegetables where perfectly cooked. Once I began to East I realized I had made a huge mistake. This was no greasy spoon. The vegetables were in fact perfectly done. I know that doesn't sound like much but perfectly cooked vegetables are very good. Just the right amount of soft crunch. A minute or two longer and there a nuisance on the plate. But that was just the beginning. I picked up my knife and fork to try the chicken. I quickly realized I could throw my knife away. The chicken was amazing. Going forward I cut it with the side of my fork. But the star of the plate was by far the Marsala sauce. It was amazing. It had this hint of sweet to it. Probably the best Marsala I've ever had. And, like I said, I'm a hobby home cook. And Italian is probably what I love to cook the most. If you're near this place and you don't stop in, you're missing out. read more

A nice place to get a Peruvian-style breakfast! The pan con lomo saltado (basically a lomo saltado sandwich) with their excellent chica morada made a hearty meal. It would be preferred if the main entrees (rather than just the breakfast items) were available before 2pm. The new(?) staff members, including Abby, did a good job serving guests in this dine-in restaurant. Did not try anything Italian. We wanted to go to dinner last minute on mothers day. So we called Jose's to make a reservation my 12 year old daughter found it on Google. We got there at 6:05 pm and we left at 8:37 pm... IT TOOK THEM OVER 2 HOURS TO BRING US OUR FOOD!!!! we were Also told that there were specials and there was not. Our check was $236 and 2 of them were children's menu items. They also brought out our food 1 by 1 at different times in the evening. So we didn't even get to eat together. I would not recommend this place, very unprofessional and very short staffed...I give the restaurant itself 1 star but I give the food 5 stars. Thank you. read more

This place had me utterly confused. It's sign advertises Peruvian and Italian food, but the menu was more Greek diner. There are 5 peruvian dishes and zero Italian. No big deal. The dude enjoyed his skillet and i enjoyed the pan con pollo saltado. I wish there were more Peruvian options to choose from, but my sandwich was great. The sangria is really sweet, and if you like booze with breakfast, they have a large drink menu. read more

Everything was phenomenal. Our server helped a lot in explaining all of the dishes and also recommended a lot of popular dishes. Everything I mean EVERYTHING was amazing. The home made sangria, Iroquois risotto with filet, papa rellena, and lomo Saltado was delectable. Very large portions. The mozzarella sticks were prefect. They were oozing with cheese. This restaurant is truly a community gem! They have great food, great service, and great prices. We enjoyed several dishes, and everything was fresh and delicious from the soft homemade bread to the salads and the penne pasta dish with shrimp. Very disappointed with Jose's. Last night (Friday) driving back from OHare we decided to try this place. I double checked the hours and said on their site they were open until 9pm. We live south side of Schererville so not that close to home. Pulled up at 8:30pm. Big neon sign says OPEN. People eating inside. Walk in and they say they are closed! Asked if we could get "to go", NOPE! But why I ask? "Somebody's birthday and they want leave early ". I say , " well it's my wife's birthday and I wanted to take her out to eat ". It was "in your face insulting " when you have people eating and the OPEN sign is on with still a half hour to go. Just a warning that it happened to me. I won't go back. read more

Excellent customer service!..the food was a bit disappointing...had the mozzarella sticks (the best food we ate!..loved it!) And the papa rellena as appetizers..The papa rellena was bland..nothing special..for dinner I had the chaufa de Carne which was just ok. The steak seemed overcooked and most of the steak pieces were tough to chew and had the consistency of gristle. Extremely SLOW service. Came here for the first time with my family (there was 4 of us), the waitress didn't give any waters or our coffee until we asked AT LEAST 5x. There were a couple of tables being waited on, people coming in for carry out and receiving their food orders and we didn't receive our orders for over an hour. I was understanding at first because the waitress seemed new but it became apparent that the food wasn't even being cooked until I asked why we weren't receiving our food. Happened upon this little place while driving thru Highland. What a pleasant surprise! A family owned and operated restaurant serving delicious Peruvian food. We enjoyed their soup, Peruvian breakfast sandwiches ( not what you would normally think of as a breakfast sandwich), and dessert. My husband really liked their special purple corn drink. Well from the latest reviews it looks like this place is going downhill. Went in for breakfast on Mother's Day. There were two tables each had two people. Nobody greeted us. Nobody said anything. Then finally after a few minutes somebody said sit wherever you like. A very long time before we got our menus or asked if we wanted something to drink. When our food finally came out it was awesome and one other table there. It was ice cold. Sent back the hashbrowns asking them to at least be heated up. Another order of hashbrowns came out still ice cold. I took a few bites of the cold eggs Benedict. I asked to talk to a manager of course none were in. I couldn't eat my breakfast and I was offered 10% off of my bill. The major red flag should've been on Mother's Day they were only two other tables when we walked in. Very disappointing. Oh, wow. 9 hours on the road, and so glad I went a couple more miles to Jose's! Their menu was so interesting I had a difficult time deciding what to order. Finally decided on a couple appetizers so I could sample both Peruvian and Italian options. I chose Mozzarella carroza and the Peruvian tamale. Both were deslish. The tamale could have used some spicy sauce, but this was my first Perician experience, so the red onions marinated in oil with cilantro may be the real thing. Service was impeccable, my waiter was attentive and curious what brought me to Jose's. Should I ever pass through Hammond again, will definitely try something else fron that great menu! read more
