Severe communication breakdown and lack of empathy for a critical care family. ​Our family's experience with Providence St. Peter Hospital has been deeply distressing during an already terrifying time. My 83-year-old grandmother was recently T-boned in a severe car accident, suffering eight broken bones, and was only just moved out of critical care. ​She managed to call me from her room, but the phone was disconnected. When I immediately called back to reconnect with her, I faced an absolute wall of bureaucratic incompetence and zero empathy. First, the staff claimed they had no idea who I was talking about. Once they finally recognized her name, they flatly refused to transfer me to her room or provide any explanation as to why. ​To prevent a family member from speaking to an elderly, severely injured patient who just initiated contact is completely unacceptable. The extreme lack of coordination between units and the rigid, unhelpful attitude of the staff turned a medical crisis into an agonizing, aggravating ordeal. St. Peter's leadership seriously needs to address how their staff handles communication with worried families. Frontline staff need training on basic empathy and how to properly locate transferred patients instead of just shutting families out. read more

Labor and delivery specifically: I had a great induction and delivery. All the nurses I interacted with were so nurturing, supportive and let me choose my care and really reassured me I'd be ok the whole time. Specifically shouting out a few nurses that really made a difference for me were Jillian, Bre, Lakita, Katie and Caitlyn (if the names were wrong or spelled wrong I'm sorry, I was a little loopy a lot of the time). Honestly my whole care team was amazing. I'm coming back to this labor and delivery for my next baby because I know I'm going to get the best care. read more

This place truly is no place you want to take your loved one to. My dad has faced many health complications and has been in and out of the hospital for the past year. They placed my dad in a place that charged $12,000 a month knowing he wouldn't stay, and he didn't. He lasted two weeks or less before he ended up back in the hospital. My mom has been hounded by case workers trying to get my dad out even though he is actively dying. He has gotten to know staff as well as familiar with where he has been and we were told "administration" wants people out after 5 days, so in other words "oh well that your dad is about to pass anyday we want him out of here". A lot of my family said their goodbyes today, but they are planning to transfer him in the state he is in to place that is going to burden my mother with a bill of $15,000 and the already stacked medical bills as well as the charge to transfer him via ambulance on his deathbed instead of letting him pass comfortably where he is at. My dad just telling me he is leaving this earth and then for them to try to transfer him when he is actively dying is making me sick to my stomach thinking about. He has already endured tremendous pain and will be caused more pain and discomfort from them uprooting him as he begins to transition from this earth. They do not care about a persons comfort they just want to get them out as soon as they can. Nobody matters. The nursing staff has been amazing and has taken very good care of my dad, so none of this is directed at them. read more

Honestly sad and disgusted by our latest experience. Years ago this was my desired place of medical care. I know there have been issues in the medical field with staffing and such. But we are paying so much for care and it's mediocre at best. After not having been to an er in a long time... we came and found the place dirty. They don't even quick wipe after the last patient. Their system of moving everyone around into small spaces squished with other patients. It was terrible. But can't even clean up. The bathroom was so dirty. And the chair they had for my daughter smelled strong of urine.... She was already struggling, in pain, no sense of privacy, middle of the night exhaustion and then gets stuck in a pee chair all night. How sad that it's come to this. read more

Minus negative...DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS!! I would go to capital medical center instead! The crisis unit was very unprofessional. While there were very qualified nurses and staff, that rarely happened, there were just a bunch of horrific people on staff. I could hear everything every staff member was saying about myself and other patients and it was very disrespectful, immature, inhumane and disgusting. They went through my phone when I asked them to charge it, and I could hear them going through it. This was an extremely traumatic experience for me. This place needs a huge retraining of sorts. I kept hearing the word covert, I'm assuming to conversations, but most never were. I should sue them for the disgusting and inhumane way they treat patients. I'm still very traumatized by this and will be for the rest of my life. I still have nightmares. So if you are in crisis, do not go here. read more

My husband's surgery (not an overnight stay) was scheduled for early morning and EVERYTHING was handled expeditiously, respectfully, and with top-notch patient care. Maureen (Surgical Waiting Room Oversight?) - was so helpful. The pre-op nurse, Aaron, put us at ease while tending to the processes/procedures needed to prep a person for surgery. Both docs (Moore and Angus) were at the top of their games. I especially appreciated Dr. Angus' information that the effects of a general anesthesia can linger for a while (weeks - in our age group) for some individuals. Our team of nurses in post-op recovery (Eden with frequent assists from May) were wonderful. Thanks to Jaegger for the PT walk around the hallway - done with good humor and some tenderness. I wish there were more hospitals in the Olympia area, so I never had to step foot in here again. St Pete's is one of the dirtiest, poorly ran hospitals I've ever been to. I've had a TON of experience here, with clients of mine, with my husband, by myself. Every time I am here I wonder how the American Healthcare System can be so terrible that this is the most reputable hospital in all of Olympia. We've had so many poor experiences here, but tonight I'm just so frustrated and so done. My husband arrived at 3pm today. The room we were in in the emergency department had dried blood splattered in three different areas. Pictures below. There was also trash under the bed, and the trash can had already had a previous patients IV cords thrown out into there, with blood in the trash can as well. The whole room felt absolutely disgusting. The Emergency Room Technician whose name I did not catch, was generally the only staff that listened to my husband and I without judgement or a negative attitude. He was very kind, and we're appreciative of him. When the cardiologist suggested an out of the usual treatment for my husband, every other worker in the room was surprised. It was very clear. They all mentioned a few times that this was odd. The RNs, the emergency room technician, a few other professionals all showed some obvious confusion and surprise. When we asked the doctor if there were any other options, as we were now SCARED of everyone's reactions as well as the pain it was already starting to cause my husband, the doctor made a frowning/scowling face and said "not unless you want to wait for the morning to see the cardiologist" 1, bedside manner? maybe don't scowl and frown when patients and their family members are asking about their options... 2, what about the cardiologist that just prescribed this treatment? You can't talk to him, or better yet he can't come down to talk with us? He continues that it's not that big of a deal. Let me just be clear this is a complication from a heart surgery he received here last Wednesday. Not even a week ago. You'd just expect them to hear you out a little more, be more understanding to patients concerns. After treatment, it was about 11:15pm. The doctor told us discharge paperwork was typed out just being printed and they'll get us out of here. An hour later, I'm asking a random employee if they have any idea when we are getting our paperwork. He looks into it and tells us it hasn't been written. 30 minutes later we're finally out of there. I get it, hospitals are understaffed, but we continue to have such bad experiences here. I've worked in healthcare for 5 years now, and many of my clients have also been treated here and even had long stays here. I've made complaints to the care they have received, the care my husband has received, the care I have received. Nothing changes. I really genuinely will try to avoid this place as best as possible from here on out. I don't mind driving to Tacoma if it's better than this treatment. read more

There are many aspects of this facility that could improve. First, I'd like to say most of the staff is incredible, with the few exceptions being several nurses in the ER department who should not do bedside nursing from the start. Second would be the management. They do not provide assistance or guidance for new staff members trying to do their best to advocate for patients or do what they can to facilitate growth amongst new staff. They are comfortable doing the bare minimum as they know their personal jobs are protected and have certainly realized that there are plenty of new nurses coming out of school to keep the ever revolving door turning. At the end of the day, it's a great place to get some experience, but be sure to leave quickly once you feel more comfortable. read more

Well, I would say that they do very well with their medical patients (to my knowledge) When it comes to patients who have psychiatric and behavioral issues, they are not very helpful with those patients. Yes, there is a psychiatric unit, but it is for adults only. I'm not even sure how many stays I've had there, but since I used to have really extreme behavioral issues, I was normally restrained 2-3 times a day. The staff are pretty nice but sadly they don't really know how to help out kids with the kind of issues I had, especially since it was just the E.R, I don't blame them, the psych sitters are just E.R staff, they aren't Behavioral Health Technicians, so they aren't really trained to know what to do in those situations. I personally believe that the security team should go through trauma-informed training as well as de-escalation training, I don't know if they were trained in the same CPI that my residential was trained in, but they need to learn some sort of verbal de-escalation tactics, especially since most of the de-escalation stuff I got from them was giving commands, though towards the end of my last couple of stays, they were doing pretty well. However, I do know that they are security officers, so they kind have to get things done just in case they have to respond somewhere else. Pediatrics team is amazing. Dr. Gilbert was very helpful for me especially since after I left St.Peters at a 2 month stay, she became my outpatient doctor! The hospital chaplain is amazing and very kind. The E.R mental health counselors give questionable care.. They don't really do talking with the patient as much as they just ask some questions and find a facility for you. Remember though that this is just my experience! Everybody's experience is different! And to be fair, I had extreme behavior issues, many people were injured, which can make sense on why people didn't know what to do. read more

My boyfriend has a broken jaw and has bleeding for 10+ hours everyone around is chit chatting and dragging there feet he's begging me to be seen I don't know what to do because if you ask for help your being aggressive and they ignore you or kick you out, I heard on the nurses make a 'step sis' joke which is just fowl when there is a man crying and begging for care. For an 'Emergency room' they lack urgency. This is literally traumatizing. read more

Please I just experienced the worst medical care at this hospital. It shouldn't even be running with the lack of quality medical care. I watch 8 nurses who stood by as a loved one of mine was turning blue. They looked like they had NO idea what to do. Found out later, they really didn't. Later, the cardiologist even apologized to my loved one. If possible, go to St Joseph in Tacoma. There you'll at least have a chance. I've worked in medicine, also have family that are Board certified specialists. This was disgraceful. read more

Denied my access to sick loved one who called me from there. No excuses for denying access of family members trying to help. Now I have to pay for your services more because you wouldn't let me pick up my fiance from the hospital and limited my access to speak to her. Providence is dangerous. My wife, who is bed bound, and was not able to communicate, or hydrate or feed herself, went to ER with fever, vomiting, etc., diagnosed with Sepsis, admitted, no rooms available, so kept in ER, and began treatment of iv antibiotics. The staff in ER is doing the best they can, but are obviously understaffed, and were providing what appeared to me to be mostly medical care, but very little patient care, in the 3 days there, She started to develop two pressure point sores, on heal and shoulder blade that were not there before, because no attention to prevention. She was moved to a medical floor room after about 48 hrs. in ER, then discharged a few hours later. We have been to this hospital ER during Covid(much worse), and since, a little better, but not a good experience overall. Our once excellent medical system has been ruined by government intervention, on too many levels. read more

I HATE THIS HOSPITAL. I HATE THIS PLACE. We checked in 15 hours ago. I was admitted 13 hours ago. I still have not got a room. No one has spoke to us since 730 am. (4.5 hours ago). I have tried to speak to people to be ignored. I am only staying because I have a scheduled NM scan for a blot clot at 2pm. Sitting in the er with my son who has been having seizures all morning and in a quite lull I went to get a coffee out of vend machine by er waiting area and come to find out they are gone but if you walk all the way over to the main entrance elevator there is now a Starbuck. Dont get to excited I order my 8 shot brave yes 8 shots and get the total and it was $17.98 I politely told them I didn't want it anymore. But wow people in some of their worst situations get screwed over coffee. Way to take advantage of people when they are down. read more

I have a history of dysmenorrhea (extremely painful menstruation) and also have an IUD. I just recently moved to Olympia and woke up (7/13/22) in pain, tried handling it on my own but after a few hours I was in too much pain. Went to an urgent care, they suspected a UTI and sent me home, as soon as my partner picked me up my pain worsened so I had her drive me here. I waited almost 30 minutes just to check in, barely able to stand from the pain. After checking in, I sat waiting for 4 hours before being taken into triage, got blood drawn and then gave a urine sample. Waited 2 more hours before being called back, and now sitting in a larger chair waiting for a doctor. I am terrified of hospitals and doctor offices, so it took a LOT for me to say "take me to the ER." So far, my pain has worsened, I am hungry and just want to go home. Will not come back after this. read more

Terrible hospital, I came out after back surgery worse off then when I went in. Three days after surgery almost died and NOW have AFIB (atrial fibrillation of the heart), and Edema swelling of my feet, niether did have it when I went in. Requiring new medication at $100 out of pocket a month.When asked what happened no doctor would give me a straight answer, wouldn't look me in the face, would only hang their head and say "we're still reviewing". They knew they were lying. The hospital manager of quality and patient safety said my care was appropiate, never once trying to identify what happened. There is zero accountiblity for the medical profession in the state of Washington because of the laws and this filthy rotten hospital knows it. Look else where for any kind of procedure or make sure your life insurance is paid up. read more

Needs to be zero stars. Specifically regarding a Dr Kamal Joshi of Providence who is an electrophysiologist who implanted an ICD in my husband's chest when his blood thinner INR number was above his normal range. My husband came home with no pain med's and no instructions about what to do with the high INR result. This was all on Weds. Three days later he's in the ER due to massive hematoma and acute pain. No o e from the cardio dept had bothered to check in with him at all. Tried calling, no one returned the many messages both email on the portal or phone. ER staff were good although his care got dropped several times in the 5 hours we were there. He set off alarms on the heart monitor many times due to pain episodes. One nurse asked me what my husband had come in for and I told her and she said she was glad she asked because his file in their computer showed he was there for something completely different and she had already pulled out the meds to treat for that problem, not the hematoma/pain caused by the ICD implant. Yikes!!! Blood tests from ER visit showed his blood thinner result was higher even from the day of surgery - luckily the ER Dr said that he hold off from taking more thinners for 3 days so bruising can settle down. What really had us fuming was the Doctor never once called to check in on him, nor did any nurses from his office - totally unacceptable and what I would consider negligent. Even this morning, Monday, no one has called. They just don't seem to care. So, caveat emptor...don't go here unless you are pretty desperate. read more

I had major knee surgery today (not a replacement). The doctors got ahead of the prep nurses and there were idle OR's. So some one was pushing the hell out of the nurses to hustle and get those OR's filled. I felt a bit uncomfortable as that part of the process was a little chaotic. Anyway, they settled down when I commented to get focused. I felt bad for the nurses prepping me. Excellent recovery and post-op! Really professional nurses and staff. Had check-in and operation prep been like that, I'd give St Pete a 5. Maybe I hit them on a crazy day?? By the way, I had to show I could eat and hold my meal down to be released. They have a menu and kitchen much like hotel room service!!! Oh how medicine has changed since barbers, leeches and mercury cocktails! read more

The ER staff and nurses I dealt with were fine. However, after the ER doc determined I had a pulse that was way low and diagnosed me correctly I had a heart condition and sent me to the heart floor. Because of the incompetence of a "hospitalist" (not sure what kind of doctor that is) I almost died. Instead of a cardiologist seeing me, she was in charge of my care. She tried to figure out if my meds or my kidney or stress was causing this while my pulse dropped to almost a deadly level then she called a cardiologist to see if it was my heart causing this! The ER doc and nurses all said it was my heart that is why I was there in the first place. My wife is watching this and answering stupid questions about what I had eaten the day before wondering if I might have contacted food poisoning or something! Unbelievable! read more

I came to the hospital thinking I'd be in and out, never would I imagine having a serious health issue, being admitted and taken to major spinal surgery at 25 yo. Trying to maintain pride and dignity while so very vulnerable is a challenge, but this team made my experience absolutely wonderful. My heart is so full- Kealani RN, Amanda RN, Kelsie CNA, Kim PT, Mary OT and everyone else, I really can't thank you guys enough for being pillars in my life when I needed support the most. Tonight I had brought my wife in to the ER for very bad lower stomach pains and not able to breathe well, I dropped her at the door then I parked came on and was told that I cant NOT be here with my wife and will be escorted out. the employee stated its the law state mandated! I veridlfied with local police there is NO mandated law this is just the personal preference of the staff at this time. I am amazed at how I was treated coming into the er I was wearing a full mask as was my wife. this is simply unacceptable. I understand times are different but this is over the edge. I will be making phone calls and formal complaints to the offices among other channels and will be contacting our family attorney in regards to this mess. thanks for not taking care of the community that supports this establishment.. (I wanted to add the private security guard was nice but the Hospital staff themselves were not) read more

I had an awful labor and delivery nurse who is there for most of my active labor and she was condescending. I believe her name was Nancy. She had a wonky eye. I also had an anesthesiologist. I think her last name was Johnson Anesthesia : Everything was great until after I got my epidural. The pain was a lot and during the night. They had to call her in after hours. The procedure went well. No complaints. I would try to fall asleep, but kept waking up due to slow respiratory rate. I was numb up to the chest. I finally had enough and I asked if we could turn off the basil rate of medication, keep it open with normal saline and let me press when I needed it. Anesthesia came and asked what was going on. I said, " I'm too numb and feel like it's affecting my respiratory rate. She said, "well that's not what you were saying whenever you asked for the epidural. I'm thinking, "duh I wasn't numb when I didn't have the epidural in". It was unprofessional. should I have just sat there and discomfort? She turned off the epidural and it was fine until active labor. It was an extremely long labor. They kept having to push medication to help with the pain. When nurse Nancy started doing her assessment and asked my pain level. I said 10. I mean, I was crying and pulling on the sides of the bed and begging for it to stop. I wasn't making anything up and I wasn't asking for anything in addition. I've never been in labor before so everything was so new to me. Nancy said, "really? you feel like you're being ripped in half?" I answered yes, and she rolled her eyes. That was discouraging to me. It's not like I was begging for pain medication. She asked a question and I answered it. This was 12 years ago, but I'll always remember it. I'm Registered Nurse, and I don't treat my patients this way. Both of them should not be in medicine. When you're sick or in the hospital, you're most likely at your lowest, and I can only imagine how they treat the rest of their patients. I am hypersensitive on how staff treats their patients. And it breaks my heart to see people be rude to them or dismiss them. read more

My husband and I were raised in Lacey and my first child was born here 1986. Three decades later, after traveling the lower 48 and Hawaii, we returned home to seek a necessary medical treatment. He had a quarter-sized, which increased to a golf ball-sized brain tumor, diagnosed late 2020. Upon entry to this facility, we heard various people stating how bitchy the ER workers treated them and that was off putting to say the least. Once triaged, my husband was placed in a hallway bed for 4 days while waiting for an opening at Swedish Cancer Institute, where Dr. Cobbs, a colleague of Dr. Douglas, had agreed to take our case. Yesterday, Nov 12, that deadly tumor was completely removed by Dr. Cobbs and his medical team. We are forever grateful and taking baby steps to get our lives back on track. All that said, St. Peter's is the most GHETTO hospital we have experienced on the west coast. Dr. Douglas deserves a professional environment to care for the patients he has the expertise to treat. Literally, anyone can walk right past intake and nursing stations without a blink because security is a joke. I saw 4 guards exiting an elevator once and did not see either of them again, before or after that moment. Where they went is anyones guess. To us, that means patient safety is severely lacking. In addition, the ER hallways are lined with beds (mostly elderly patients) and the rooms are labeled A&B using recliners to seat patients within. A curtain is used as a divider between them. This is a FEMA camp, not a hospital. The doctors are the assets and the majority mean-spirited nursing staff are the liabilities. The men are far kinder than the women here, from facial expressions to body language...that is certain. Management and administration requires an overhaul to select quality nurses. Make no mistake, we will bypass this sad excuse and travel north for any future HEALTHCARE needs. read more

This hospital has the worst birthing center I've ever experienced. Not one time did I ever see the same Doctor more than once throughout my entire pregnancy and when the day of the birth arrived, I had a Doctor I had never seen before. My blood pressure bottomed out during labor and they gave me ephedrine through my IV to bring it back up. After delivery, I was taken to my hospital room with my baby and was never checked on once throughout the 4 days I was there and on the day I was supposed to be discharged, I was informed that I could not take my baby home because they said he came out positive for methamphetamines which was impossible because I was not using any kind of drugs during my pregnancy and I told them that but they took him away from me anyway. 2 weeks later I received a letter stating that the tests were sent to Spokane for deeper testing and the results were unfounded and it was not meth in his system, it was amphetamines from the ephedrine that they had given me.... their fault!!! I would never recommend this hospital to anyone, they lie and set you up and destroy lives. They don't even deserve 1 star rating, the care is below anything on the rating scale. The worst hospital in Washington by far!!!! read more
